Performance enhancing drugs are a range of products not one or the other, so you can't really be either 100% natural or juiced up. As a result there are always some athletes or camps trying to push the limits/standards set by the committee which will always lead to some dispute over what is and what isn't allowed. In this day and age, nobody is perfectly natural because that simply cannot make you competitive enough.
I ran 800m and 110 hurdles and they are the 2 hardest events I've ran in track. I'm usually a distance guy, but I did hurdles for fun and I'm more tired from the 110 hurdles than the 800m even when I give my all.
The fact that Young's record lasted so long is truly incredible! Also, to the reply guys: Flo Jo's autopsy showed no signs of long term PED use. And I've never heard anything about Young using PEDs, either. Interesting how no one has ever speculated that Warholm is using PEDs...

by getting a patern in your jumping like the video explains, you already time them automaticly. at the point these people get to the olympics, i bet they barely think about it. it has been practiced so many times that you do it automaticly.
So does it still count or is it unrelated? Like does it have to be the Olympics were you break the record or can some 17 year old in Oklahoma have a phenomenal run and break it during a high-school track meet?
The last 100m is a killer I always hated running this event, I'm a great 400m runner, but the 400mh is so technical. Getting over the hurdle isnt even the difficult part, it's the stepping like they explained in the video.
If we could just take a moment to highlight Edwin Moses. Between 1977 and 1987 he won 122 consecutive 400m hurdles races in a ROW, and set the world record 4 times. There's a reason that Young refers to him as "the Master Edwin Moses" here.
The stride pattern reminds me of backstroke count in swimming at the flags you need a count to the wall for the turn and if you mis count it can mess up your whole race.
Kevin Young you make me proud. I cannot even begin to imagine what's it like to run such a hard race with so much pressure hat off to you ns to all Olympic athletes they are great.
As a sprint hurdler. I applaud people who runs the 400mh. At first people used to alternate legs. I stuck to the sprint hurdles as I couldn’t alternate. But these folks are killing it now. A 400m is hard enough and then you throw in hurdles. Madness!

That was fascinating! I always thought hurdle races seemed extremely tough and super technical, but I didn't know that it was so specific that athletes are counting their strides. More Olympics videos would be awesome! I'd love to learn about Cricket and Rugby.

I adore Karsten Warholm with all my heart, been following the absolute legend for many years now, I managed to hold it together to watch his actual race but then hearing him interview after and say "I know everyone says don't let sport define you but this is all I am and all I do, it's so important to me" broke me, I get it and I'm happy for you if you have other joys outside of sports but for some of us it is all we think about, do, and pass on to others all day long and there's nothing wrong with that 💪💕
Just shows you how good Ed Moses was. His WR of 47.02 stood for nearly 9 years until Kevin Young broke it in a time of 46.78. Never thought anyone would ever get near it, so well done to Warholm Karsten. Unbelievable time.
There's absolutely no shame in holding a world record for almost 30 years until the next generation comes along and smashes it on a track thats more modern. Nobody needs to be ashamed.
Not because the parents are athletes means the child would be one ... What if the child loses a leg or has some sickness or is naturally smart anything can happen to the child and not guaranteed to live a life just like his/her parents

I used to run it and I'll tell you why it's so hard: you're busting a gut running an already incredibly difficult event, the 400m and then you have a bunch of hurdles in your way! It requires pace, endurance and rhythm, which is a rare combination. I had an absolute love/hate relationship with the event. Man it's difficult.
In the 2020 Olympics Final, the 3 podium finishers beat the pre-Warholm record. Warholm himself managed to improve it and be the first man to ever race it under 46s.
And in the 2021 Olympic final, few weeks after this video, all those who took the podium achieved the record that Young made reigning for almost three decades. The game evolved.
Fascinating! A lot of these Olympic sports are mysteries to laypeople like myself because we can't comprehend how difficult they are. I'd love to learn more about others.

I used to run the 400H in high school and I completely agree. It also requires that you save energy for the last hurdles and because of that, it is the hardest event.
I ran the hurdles from 12 years old till 16 yrs old. Practicing was brutal my coach would hold a piece of wood above the hurdle making sure my form was spot on. Rythm and form was most important.
You had forget to mention the PAIN; pain after 300m and pain for 2 days after. Muscles burning, lungs not able to take enough oxygen from the air, veins bumping in your ears…. I use to run 110 and 400 hurdles 25 years ago but still get a knot in my stomach when I see a race. Anyway I would love to be able to run once more time, what a wonderful sport (even with the pain)
Also, in order to achieve the optimal stride pattern over the race and clear the hurdles as efficiently as possible, a high degree of flexibility like in your hips is needed. There's just so many different aspects that a 400m Hurdler needs to develop. Great to see Kevin Young's insight into the race and Warholm's achievement.

I would think just having to time your jumps while still running as fast as you can makes this event incredibly hard.

One of the hardest event there is and it’s hurdling not jump. Jumping would cause you to use too much energy which you need to complete the race

@@Newmcast in theory a WR can be broken at any meet: which has the correct equipment for timing etc. All WR are then ratified for doping etc.

You don't necessarily need good form over hurdles for ih, but you do need speed and a good recovery from hurdling.

Coming from seeing the 400m hurdles in Tokyo 46 low and sub 46 these guys DEFINITELY just took it to another level!!

0:32 that was wasn't Norway's trails it was a diamond league that happened to be in Oslo, Sydney's at the time was during the trails tho
