Why the 400m hurdles is one of the hardest Olympic races

- Running the 400-meter hurdles requires strategic rhythm, but it’s over so fast you just might miss it.

There are few single events that demand as much skill as the 400-meter hurdle race. Olympians need to have the speed of a 200-meter dash runner, the endurance of an 800-meter runner, an understanding of rhythm, and, of course, the ability to efficiently clear a hurdle.
Various techniques can make or break a race. If you jump too high, you’re wasting time and energy; too low and you collide with a hurdle. Even if your technique over the hurdles is perfect, you can’t win if you don’t have the speed. Former Olympic hurdler and (until very recently) world record-holder Kevin Young helps us break down the rhythm of the 400-meter hurdles.
Correction: Karsten Warholm broke Kevin Young's record at a Diamond League meet in Oslo, Norway on July 1 - not at the Olympic Trials.

it amazes me how an athlete so passionate about his sport don't get upset when his record is broken but interested on where the new generation will take the limit
I think he gets how impressive what he did was, and how much the next generation has improved on them. It's humble and makes him more respectable tbh
Athletes are not children. They have sportsmanship
@@kupopuffs420 youd be surprised how many do not
as a 69 year old average person i am schocked at what i could do at 18 compared to now.
Seems like a real humble nice guy
As a very former collegiate 200m sprinter, there is nothing like the 400 hurdles. even the 800m guys would admit this.
Waaat?
Bwoah
I ran 800m and 110 hurdles and they are the 2 hardest events I've ran in track. I'm usually a distance guy, but I did hurdles for fun and I'm more tired from the 110 hurdles than the 800m even when I give my all.
Can confirm, hurdle is almost a different discipline. Did once for fun , never again
Try running a marathon under 2 hours
Cool to hear the admiration for Warholm from Young, no grudge or resentment from losing his record but just appreciation for hurdling greatness like his own.
Love his spirit.
records are meant to be broken
Yea hearing that was amazing and beautiful
When a record lasts that long you cant even be salty
Young held the record for 25 years. He wants to pass the baton to the next generation. If records can't be broken then top athletes will pick a different discipline where they have a shot at breaking the record.
Every-time I think something is impossible, the Olympics prove me wrong. It’s why I love the event, never give up and you will succeed.
We really should come with hyper Olympics where all forms of doping & performance enhancing technology is allowed, just to see what human body can do
@@eustache_dauger yeah but it’s not as cool because it’s cheating. Being original is better.
@@PremierCCGuyMMXVI The probem is the IOC does allow certain substances. Performance enhancing drugs are a range of products not one or the other, so you can't really be either 100% natural or juiced up. As a result there are always some athletes or camps trying to push the limits/standards set by the committee which will always lead to some dispute over what is and what isn't allowed. In this day and age, nobody is perfectly natural because that simply cannot make you competitive enough.
Like... licking your elbows?
Mate, this happened way before the Olympics and had nothing to do with them.
How legendary to hold a world record for almost thirty years. Literally nobody is doing it like him or like he did back in the 90s
Flo Jo has held 2 records (100m and 200m) for over 30 years, but she probably juiced...
@@OlJackBurton Almost definitely. Young isn't in the clear either. Early 90's was a PED race between nations.
The fact that Young's record lasted so long is truly incredible! Also, to the reply guys: Flo Jo's autopsy showed no signs of long term PED use. And I've never heard anything about Young using PEDs, either. Interesting how no one has ever speculated that Warholm is using PEDs...
@@ktw70 nonsense ,everyone but Athing is suspected.
Jonathon Edwards is now in his 27th year of holding the triple jump world record....
Very true. As a person who's run 400m, I can say that it itself is very demanding, let alone jumping hurdles! Athletes are just superhumans
especially brutal when you make the jump from Junior (33') to Senior (36")... and you haven't actually grown...
I remember doing this event a couple times in highschool. Incredibly painful, everything is burning at the end of the race.
Lol.
The 400mh is total madness.
Similar pain as the 800

I love the guy's smile when he talks about the "whole new level" of his follow up athletes.
Warholm beating the record in his second race of the year, in his home country, a month before the olympics has got to be the best feeling
And the WORLD RECORD is broken again. Warholm is a generational talent.
"Why the 400mh is one of the hardest events"
Karsten, Sydney, Rai, Dalilah: LOL
Vox: 400m hurdles is the hardest.
Tokyo 2020: Everyone breaking world records.
Me watching this while laying on the couch , eating chips : 👁️👄👁️ Maybe I can do this too
On be half of the viewer I would like VOX make more video of Olympic sport. Thank you!!!
More Olympics coverage coming next week - stay tuned!
Just delightful how a champion like Kevin Young marvels at current talents, wishing the best for the sport.
If you don't want to puke at the finish line after a 400, you're doing it wrong.
Been there, done that. 😂 I only ran it a few times, but it's honestly kind of nice to know that I'm not the only one who would get physically ill afterwards.
Warholm didn’t break his record in Olympic trials...he broke it in a diamond league meet.
yeah they've noted that in the description now
You could say they have a lot hurdles to overcome in their sport
Jail
Love it haha
Come on bro
Dad? Is that you?
I hate dad jokes even more after this
Kevin Young you make me proud.
I cannot even begin to imagine what's it like to run such a hard race with so much pressure hat off to you ns to all Olympic athletes they are great.
That was fascinating! I always thought hurdle races seemed extremely tough and super technical, but I didn't know that it was so specific that athletes are counting their strides. More Olympics videos would be awesome! I'd love to learn about Cricket and Rugby.
When you think joining sports as profession does not involve Maths…
I really dont want to seem snobbish or so but counting to like 150 steps or so is really not maths.
@@timonschneider6290 But how can you count to 150 when you only have 10 fingers! That's impossible.
@@taekatanahu635 🤣
@@taekatanahu635 I can get to 1023 on 10 fingers. How do you count with your fingers? XD
Just under a week after this video was published, Warholm beat his own record by .76 seconds.
Warholem smashes world record....45.94
This is a legendary race in track history🔥🔥🐐🐐🐐
There's absolutely no shame in holding a world record for almost 30 years until the next generation comes along and smashes it on a track thats more modern. Nobody needs to be ashamed.
@@scz1770 ohh sorry, it was a spelling mistake
I wrote shames instead of smash..
Who's here after the Warholm won gold and smashed his own word record
I'm glad everyone is using the metric system
Would've been cool if this video contained footage of people actually running this race
Maybe, it has something to do with copyright, but at the same time, Vox should have enough resources for that
not until a year ig, olympics is still going on
@@linkinlinkinlinkin654 The Olympics has nothing to do with it. Athletics will not begin for another 3 days and none of the relevant races they would've used (apart from Young's) were run at any Olympics.
Agreed. The photos are good but a video demonstration/examples would have made more sense
@@irrelevance3859 did you not watch the video at 2:25 or 3:05 ? and yeah, copyright for sure is a thing.
In the 2020 Olympics Final, the 3 podium finishers beat the pre-Warholm record. Warholm himself managed to improve it and be the first man to ever race it under 46s.
Karsten Warholm just shattered the record in Tokyo. 45.94!!!!!!
This is simply excellent
2024 Olympics had the 3 fastes 400m hurdlers in history face off. They did follow your lead Young and take it to the next level.
My only memory of the 400m in school was people falling at the finish line and/or puking 😂
Also, in order to achieve the optimal stride pattern over the race and clear the hurdles as efficiently as possible, a high degree of flexibility like in your hips is needed. There's just so many different aspects that a 400m Hurdler needs to develop. Great to see Kevin Young's insight into the race and Warholm's achievement.
Incredible Warholm!
You had forget to mention the PAIN; pain after 300m and pain for 2 days after. Muscles burning, lungs not able to take enough oxygen from the air, veins bumping in your ears…. I use to run 110 and 400 hurdles 25 years ago but still get a knot in my stomach when I see a race. Anyway I would love to be able to run once more time, what a wonderful sport (even with the pain)
I ran the hurdles from 12 years old till 16 yrs old. Practicing was brutal my coach would hold a piece of wood above the hurdle making sure my form was spot on. Rythm and form was most important.
I saw the 46.70 at home and I was so impressed by the norwegian guy.
hearing those first words gave me war flash backs of the performance anxiety I would get from doing hurdles back in highschool track meets
I love how he’s inspired by the title being taken from him after 30 years. That’s a good man right there.
I have the same impression! And I just saw a small docu about Warholm, and he seemed even nicer!
finally a video using sensible units 👍
FANTASTIC VIDEO! I love the science that goes into track and field events.
Thought they'd discuss Edwin Moses in more detail. The guy went undefeated for 9 years, 9 months, and 9 days, which consists of 122 total 400m hurdles races. His technique was something he expounded on in Neil deGrasse Tyson's podcast Startalk for those who are interested.
Here's a tidbit: Edwin Moses was an academic scholar who double majored in Physics and Industrial Engineering. He nerded his way into being the best in the world!
Ran both events
Thanks for recognizing my

Cheers
The graphics are beautiful as always
Watch Femke Bol next week everyone, she's only getting better and better!
I did athletics when I was younger and we did 300 metre hurdles. I remember the second time I did it I threw up my whole breakfast afterwards.
This is not an exaggeration. I'd eaten a big breakfast beforehand and then arrived to the track only to discover I'd gotten the times wrong and that my heat was about to start. I jumped the fence, ran the race, and then walked up a hill away from the crowd and threw up three times
What position did you get?

Here’s for Warholm breaks the world record again. That’s amazing how he improved 0.7s more from the previous record.
My knees hurt from just watching this
The 400m hurdles, triple jump and the pole vault are the most technically demanding events, period.
On the track yes, but there are other events that require more technique
Looking forward to this AND the 400m race. There's some top top athletes competing for that final. Men and women.
It's been almost a week since I haven't heard from Vox,, glad they're back
Who’s here after Warholm smashed his own record at the Tokyo Olympics?
400m Hurdles is so difficult that in my high school district they lowered the race distance by 100m
The next level in the long hurdles, will be when someone reduces their step pattern to an even number and jumps with alternate leg. You saw Warholm had to stutter step because of his speed.
“Oh yeah! New level is here baby” Warholm
Not to mention it's one of the most brutally painful events ever
I think the hardness of running nearly half a kilometre while jumping constantly sort of speaks for itself
0:32 that was wasn't Norway's trails it was a diamond league that happened to be in Oslo, Sydney's at the time was during the trails tho
I know hindsight is 20/20, but you really should have made this AFTER the olympics final :)
But the last prediction in the film wouldn't be so good after the olympics. To say that before the race is something that only can be said by a true expert knowing what he is talking about.
@@niklasnilsson4705 Honestly great point, Niklas.
Warholm did it again! Bra å være norsk i dag.
As a high school athlete that competes in the 300m hurdles I feel completely spent when I finish the race I can’t imagine an extra 100m!!!
If you end up running in college, you'll get used to it! All my teammates who went from 300 to 400 transitioned pretty well :)
Us tough Canadians run the 400M hurdles in highschool lol
Great insight
Hrm, we were trained to count on the 100 highs, but trained to lead with either leg so we didn't have to count or stutter on the 400.
This video aged well
So why is it one of the hardest?

It looks so difficult & it is.
How come the height of the hurdles isn't mentioned?!
Warholm went under 46.00 yesterday in Tokyo. Shattered his own record it's 45.94 now!
Actually, all three medalists beat the old record that had stood for 29 years. Benjamin also shatterd Warholm's recent record by over half a second, and los Santos came close to it. From what I read 7 of the 8 finalists set personal bests, and some set national or continental records as well. What was on that track?
Might have to redo this video it got broken again

You’re right - thanks so much for pointing out the error. We’ve noted it in an info card and the description!
So does it still count or is it unrelated? Like does it have to be the Olympics were you break the record or can some 17 year old in Oklahoma have a phenomenal run and break it during a high-school track meet?
@@40kBookSummaries in theory a WR can be broken at any meet: which has the correct equipment for timing etc. All WR are then ratified for doping etc.

Thank you Vox of disabusing me of that notion.
Who’s here after Warholm obliterated the previous record?
I am! Norwegian here, who feels poud of my countryman.
I would think just having to time your jumps while still running as fast as you can makes this event incredibly hard.
by getting a patern in your jumping like the video explains, you already time them automaticly. at the point these people get to the olympics, i bet they barely think about it. it has been practiced so many times that you do it automaticly.
One of the hardest event there is and it’s hurdling not jump. Jumping would cause you to use too much energy which you need to complete the race
400m alone is hard enough. With hurdles is just unimaginable
That's the thing, it happens soooo fast, you are acting almost entirely off muscle memory. It's that difficult.
