  • A breathtaking speech about the reasons why human evolution can either spiral upward or collapse on itself if the past isn't constantly explored and conserved in order to build upon it. Riveting. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I used to teach this at an historic site where limestone was baked and processed. What a great talk she gave here. People asked me how the first people discovered this and my best guess was you just need to have a hot campfire on limestone for a while. After it cools the limestone below the ashes will be powdery calcium oxide. Let some rain fall on it and it slakes naturally, the heat from the exothermic reaction boiling the water, almost like reanimating the fire. People would definitely notice that. Then it starts to absorb CO2 from the air and creates a shell of lime plaster on top of the rough native limestone rock. The only thing I wish she hadn't said was that splashing the water on your skin during slaking will burn like fire. It won't burn like that, it will burn like drain cleaner since it can have a pH as high as 12.4. I wish I knew how early artisans protected themselves from the caustic burns or if injuries were just accepted as part of the job. You definitely never want to inhale calcium oxide dust because it will slake in your moist lungs and cause lifelong injury or death.

'like fire' = 'gives burns as if it were fire', which is close enough. It'll still remove your skin and hurt like blazes.

great shame the original version of her ted talk recording was taken down for a digital clean-up, got quite a resonance in terms of views and comments - still, ace talk, gives you a new focus on the history of things!

Glad to hear that. I was thinking it was a real shame only 7,000 have watched it but it must have been much more before being reloaded.

In conservation of Library books and documents, CaOH2 is used to deacidify paper. The acid is replaced with an alkaline reserve that elongates the shelf-life of these valuable documents

A truly renaissance woman presents us with the quintessential technology of culture. The myth of the linear progress of mankind, is remarkably and eloquently exposed in Daniela's story of stone. A gratifying and startlingly solid manifestation of Karr’s maxim, "Plus ça change, ....plus c'est la même chose".

Ok, how do you make it ? I'm confused why Ca OH2 is, a reactive chemical and KOH is just a catalyst Iwhat is the pure catalyst for of calcium, I'm guessing CaOH singular.
