Satin Doll -  Easy Jazz Chords (and a little beyond)

  • The Ellington/Strayhorn tune Satin Doll is a standard that you need to have in your repertoire. It is also a great standard if you want to work on some easy jazz chords and playing II V progressions, since the progression is mostly made up of one bar II Vs.
    In this video I am going to go over two sets of easy jazz chords that you can use to comp Satin Doll, namely two versions of shell-voicings. They work really well for Freddie Green rhythm guitar, but are also a great place to start and something that you can build a lot on. This is what I demonstrate with an example at the end of the video adding a lot more color and melodic material to the way I comp it.

    Do you also use shell-voicings as a good way to easily move through the harmony of a song? 🙂

    • @Trombonology
      @Trombonology 6 років тому +2

      Yes! I think the setting should dictate the fullness of the harmony. In a small group, I love to hear extensions, but Freddie Green-style always seems to me to be the way to go with a larger outfit; in an orchestra, the brass or reeds will be responsible for the development of the harmony beyond the basics, while guitar, typically, is just going to be providing rhythm with the defining 3rd and 7th -- while staying out of the way of the bass player. Great discussion and examples, Jens!

    Thumb pick? You don't see it in Jazz very much, but I've made the change (based on Tommy Emmanuel's advice in another video) and I'm loving it. After giving it a chance, I've found having another color at my disposal is really cool, and it's made my flatpicking better too somehow lol. Maybe subconsciously led to a more relaxed, accurate grip, since you need to keep that thumb note volume down, you develop a light touch. Works great for me in the little bit of jazz I do, and at no point on a gig have I missed the old fat thumb sound, on the contrary, I miss the instant easy attack when I don't have it. I'm no noob, added the thumb pick 25 years into my career, just throwing that out there for anyone wondering how to have both worlds at the same time, it's possible. The jazz community can be closed minded in some cases (Jens definitely isn't), maybe it's just for the country guys lol, in my old age I've adopted a "do what sounds better" approach.

Gave me two different places to play in the same key. In another of your videos on shells when it went to the root 6, switched to the F major chords confusing me for a bit. I feel that shell voicings and diatonic chords are the entry ports for Long Time guitar players like myself to whom this way of relating to the keyboard is foreign but intriguing

      The shell-voicings are basically guide tones with a bass note, so for chords then the shell-voicing videos do actually cover it. There are a few applications for solos as well and the way I think you should work with that is what I cover in the target note videos 🙂

    Hey Jens,
    At 12:00 the Dminor 11th has five notes written out in the tablature, how are you playing all five notes while finger picking?
    The chord before that makes sense to me since you don’t play the b string, I don’t know if I should use my little finger, skip the b string again, or play the top three strings.

    • @JensLarsen
      @JensLarsen  6 років тому +1

      It's actually not the Dm7(11) that has 5 notes, it's a Dm7(9). But I would indeed play that with my little finger. You could easily also skip the B string 🙂

    One thing I don't understand about the harmony of this tune is that the E minor to A dominant 7 before the first repeat is seen as a 2 - 5 (as an instructor online pointed out).
    The first time I saw this I thought it may be a 1 - 2 - 3 - 6 movement beginning where that first ending begins, and the 6th could be a dominant 7 chord because its moving back to the 2 at the beginning making it part of a larger 3 - 6 - 2 - 5 movement that goes back the to the beginning of the A section. This approach would have you look at it all as being in C major.
    Is this a "wrong" approach to the harmony, and if so then why?

    • @JensLarsen
      @JensLarsen  3 роки тому +1

      In music, context is everything and while Satin Doll is in C major it is as much about moving around II V progressions, that is why Em7 A7 is treated as a II V in D major, and not as III [V] in C major which is what you would normally do with a Cmaj7 A7 Dm7 G7 Em7 A7 Dm7 G7 type of progression.
      Does that help?

    • @tawandamanika530
      @tawandamanika530 3 роки тому

      I think I do. Just to make sure I've understood; that 1 - 2 - 3 - 6 - 2 - 5 typa movement I'm seeing is still a valid one, but in this particular context of modulating 2 - 5s in the broader tune it's better to see it as a quick 1 - 2 in C followed by a quick 2 - 5 in D which then leads down a whole tone to the original 2 - 5 in C as we return to the beginning of the A section?

    It would be really great if you could leave the chord charts up longer, adding the next without removing the prior one from the display. The only important thing to show is the chord chart and your left hand. We don't need to see your face, since we can already hear you speaking. Showing the treble clef notation is OK, but less important than being able to see the chord charts relative to each other, rather than just sequentially. It would make stopping the study all of the chord charts much more effective, rather than one at a time.
