You went back to the basics on this one but I think you covered about everything of what you'll find on jazz basic ii V I I've found on UA-cam. Great video!
This remains one of the best teaching videos for starters. I cannot thank you enough. Can you do the same, with the scale and arpeggios, for a minor and a 7 ? And maybe explain how they are connected. Thank you again Jens, you are a great teacher !
This is so straightforward and simple, I wonder why it's taken me this long to learn how important this is. You have really uncomplicated things for me. Really appreciate it.
Started your lessons today. Been playing guitar for years but finally got the urge to learn more theory/jazz. Just want to say thank you for selflessly sharing your knowledge!!!
This was really cool! I'm having a lot of fun messing around with major 7th arpeggios, feels like I'm rediscovering a deeper interest in the instrument
Hey Jens, I had some time today to watch videos and this one came on after one of them. Its AMAZING to watch the GREAT evolution thats occurred on here with your videos. This was obviously one of the first ones. You've really built this channel from the grass roots, early days of UA-cam. I didn't realize how long you've been on here. This is an inspiration to everyone out there wanting to start their own channel. Your teaching method was always GREAT. The channel has evolved to not only great teaching, but now it's filled with excellent editing, wit, and humour. It's gone beyond just great teaching, it's entertaining.
I'm a tenor sax player, and I really appreciate your approach to breaking down the improv in language that I can understand, looking forward to watching all of your video's, as someone else previously commented, I'm looking forward to "binge jamming" using your material!
Aaaah.... now I get.... learn the arpeggios and then when you can do that in your sleep start chucking in other notes from the key! The scales (sorry for the pun) just fell from my eyes! Thank you! What a great teacher.
Thank you for this lesson, Jens. Your explanation makes the whole process extremely clear, and also open-ended for further individual practice. I have learned more from your videos than any teacher in the past.
Wow.I just heard a pod cast interview with you on stitchers Learn Jazz Standards podcast so I ended up here by chance remembering your name.this melodic improvisation technique is GOLD man. I'm using this as a beginning jazz piano player and I've got to say this video is nutrient rich!my left hands been super busy on chord voicings for 251s in any key and now right hand improvd melody lines are coming into my practice sessions.perfect timing man THANKYOU!
Thank you so much for the time you take for create this kind of stuff for all the students and musicians who are starting in the jazz world. I appreciate it so much. Blessings.
Jens, I've been learning jazz on youtube, but I found your channel last week and I'm very excited! Your lessons are clear and simple, and I can easily understand, much more than in other channels. Thank you from Brazil!
Thanks for your awesome jazz instruction ! I been listening to your videos and in my opinion your about the best sounding teacher on the tube ...really love your playing 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎸✌
This is great. I’m proficient in the 5 forms of C and several other keys but still learning the instrument deeper now. I’m having the hardest time understanding improvising in jazz. Thanks for breaking it down more simply. I have a lot of work to do. All the best 🎶🙏🏻
Thank you so much Jen! You're method is very clear and simple. It's not easy to find teachers to simplify the wonder of jazz music. Now i'm going to study with your lessons.
I found your channel today wanting to learn some bossa nova chords and im impressed with your knowledge, your very clear way of teaching, and how youre willing to clear any doubts in the comments, subscribed immediately, keep doing your content man, its amazing, best of luck!!
Thanks to share these precious videos! Finally I find materials that incentive us to study and understand about all the particularities of our passion, the jazz guitar. There are contends for a long time of study...
I'm really enjoying your lessons, Jens. You have a great way of explaining the concepts and well thought out techniques for applying and practicing them. You also have a refreshingly down to earth presentation style, that avoids any pretension and makes the mysterious world of jazz far less intimidating for someone dipping their toe in the water for the first time! Keep up the great work.
Thanks Jens, greatly appreciated. In the video you touch on practicing arpeggios using alternating note patterns, rather than straight up and down, enabling you to use them more melodically. Terrific lesson - thanks Jens. You provided a very logical and clear approach to practicing these changes. I'm looking forward to exploring more of your lessons.

thank you for all the great videos. been playing blues all my life, but since getting an ibanez as53 recently im getting more into jazz. especially your blue bossa video has helped me a lot
Sir, excellent lesson ! I subscribed just now...and I’m glad to have found you! I’m 66, still gigging...and still working to improve. I’m sure to learn ways to spice up my blues and such with a jazz twist....with your help! Thank you !
Thank you very much for your lessons! I just recently discovered your channel and I wish, I had known it earlier. When I started to learn jazz guitar three years ago, my motivation dropped after a while because all the content that was available to me at the time was either too complicated or not applicable (because it did not sound like jazz at all). Because of your lessons I am starting again - so thank you so much!
Great lesson Jens. I have viewed several of your videos and you are a very good, informative and inviting teacher. I also love your Montreal Jazz Festival shirt!
I've been working on this exercise off and on all day and for the first time I was able to play something really nice. For a moment I wasn't seeing the shapes of the arpeggios, it was the most in touch I've felt with guitar..and then it was gone lol and I'm taking a minute to say thank you for this lesson, all these lessons. Alright, I'm gonna get back to it.
I stumbled into jazz. I’ve always played it (standards here and there) but never devoted a lesson plan around it. So I’m bout learning the fifty recommendations you have I’m finding the hardest part is sight reading! I am going thru all your videos! (Mahalo)
Thanks for the lesson. Good stuff! Remember folks, write out each of the chords' notes next to each other. From there you can make up lines in your mind before even picking up the instrument.
J, Thanks so much, seems to be a long time since the last post on this video. Seeing how you have set it up for far away strangers...well it is almost intuitive, being new to this whole phenom, I appreciate your time and efforts to bring this 'sound', which goes from this jazz to...anywhere really in different genres of music. I have been following your weeklies for a few months now and am finally able to connect the dots(notes). As a result, 'am motivated to continue continuing. :) cheers
Great video, everything is clear and well explained. I've been playing for 20 years and only in recent months started to focus on jazz and a more arpeggio based style. This has been a big help. Keep up the good work.

@@frankspence8723 Yeah man, it takes time and patience. It did not seem that hard in the beginning to do it but it is... Anyway, after a lot of practice, you finally get it and understand the role :)
one of my favorite channels , i'd like a topic treating the poetry within a jazz standard improvisation , like decoration of the melody and remaining faithful to the theme , not just aproaching the change like a normal backing track .
+Moncef Fadal Thanks Moncef! That's an interesting subject for sure! Might be a bit difficult to really make a lesson on but I'll start thinking about it :) Thank you!
Thank you . because the struggle is real , going from theory to creating long beautiful lines is realy difficult . some say that charlie parker's and other greats transcription books should be analyzed , and it's always to transcribe ourselves instead of using transcription book for ear benefits.
Moncef Fadal I guess it depends on the sort of melodies. I think that if you can analyze things melodically and theoretically and then take an aspect of that when trying to compose lines or improvise you can improve a lot. That is for big part how I do it, I think. :)
thanks that's the most interessting part about jazz in my opinion . i got recently into transcribing using CAPO i realy nice app you should check btw. i have a slightly off topic question , since i haven't found a video on bebop scales in your channel . is it important to learn different bebop scales and not just throw a passing tone whever i like ?
CAPO? I'll look it up :) I don't really use bebop scales, though the system works for some people. I've often seen people use it as an excuse to run up and down scales and not making an effort to make a melody. For me it worked just as well to just work on using passing notes in a nice way.
I've been playing guitar for 50 years and am only just discovering how much fun jazz music is. Having just found and subscribed to your channel I can see that you lessons will help a lot. Is there a set order of videos to follow so I can progress in a logical direction? Thanks very much for all you are doing and greetings from Spain!
Thank you Emlyn! Jazz is indeed an exciting adventure, I enjoy learning myself everyday! I don't really have an order for the lessons. Everybody is different so it is impossible to have an order. If you find the material in this video easy then try the same on a blues? I have lesson on that, or maybe something with chords like my latest lesson? How does that sound?
Amazing recommendations as always! I have a big doubt about what position of arpeggio are the most useful? We have 7 ways to play a ii V i with root in 6th with pinky, root in 5th with pinky, roots in 6th with middle, etc etc... but maybe only 3 shapes are comfortable to use them... My question is: in the real jazz live performance, do you use all the shapes? or you take only the most useful shapes? thanks for your time making this videos, Blessings and all the best!!!
You are truly an amazing teacher and a hero for giving these lessons for free!
Thank you Jonas!

thanks bro for your material and videos all the best from argentina
This helped so much you have no idea i wish i found this earlier.
Thank you! Glad yo hear that you found it useful! Hopefully you can take it further with one of the other lessons!
one of my favorite channels , i'd like a topic treating the poetry within a jazz standard improvisation , like decoration of the melody and remaining faithful to the theme , not just aproaching the change like a normal backing track .
CAPO? I'll look it up :)
I don't really use bebop scales, though the system works for some people.
How does that sound?
brilliant lesson, very helpful and down to the point 😇
You're very welcome Tino!
Thanks for your time sir...gonna have to go back over this one. Nice guitar, nice tone.
Thank you 🙂
Best Jazz school ever.
Thank you very much! :)
Thanks a lot ... u r really a perfect teacher . , lots of respect for you .
Glad you find it useful!
I am really starting to dislike that ad 'There are a million ways to learn guitar online...bouncy ball"
I can imagine! I am thinking about getting the YT premium thing just for that!

haha yeh man, use brave browser, it also blocks ads on your phone
Basics are everything!!
+JacobAlonso That is so true!
Just thought Id join in and say thanks Jens! Great lessons, I have subscribed!
+Joseph B Thank you Joseph! Glad you can use the video!
Just pick one you find easy and learn that. In the long run you need them all, but you can worry about it later 🙂
