Jazz Standard with Pentatonic Scales - Satin Doll - Jazz Guitar Lesson
Вставка
- Опубліковано 12 жов 2016
- All guitarists learn the pentatonic scale, and it is a more versatile tool than most realize. We can in fact play entire jazz standards using it. In this Guitar Lesson I am going to take the progression from Satin Doll and first show you how to play the jazz chords and then go over how you can use pentatonic scales to improvise over it.
At the end of the video I talk a bit about how you use the pentatonic scales so that you still emphasize the changing chords and really follow the progression.
Here's a 2 chorus solo on Satin Doll using pentatonic scales:
• Satin Doll Solo only...
How to play Jazz Chords:
• How to play Jazz Chord...
Satin Doll solo:
• Medium Swing Satin Do...
II V I with Pentatonics:
• Soloing over a II V I ...

Bless your soul Jens. You always come through with great lessons!
Thank you! That is very nice of you to say so!
What a great find. It popped up in my feed
Glad you enjoyed it
Great work again Jens.. Still an avid follower with many thanks for your time...
Thank you Robert! Glad to hear that you enjoy the videos!!
Great lesson. Seems doable enough even with a lack of musical knowledge. Thanks man :)
You're welcome! Hope you can put it to use :)
Was playing this tonight and I used this method and watched the video to see if you did it the same way! I must be leaving something 😉
Haha! Well it's a pretty good concept on this song though 🙂
Very valuable lesson!
Thank you Lucas! Glad you like it!
¡Genial! - Gracias, saludos.
Gracias! :)
Great lesson. I would like to hear a couple of choruses of you demonstrating this approach.
Thank you Bill! I already made a video where I play over the song with the scales. I'll upload it tomorrow. :)
I posted it now, check it out!

Really helpful, thx!
Glad to hear!
Merci Jens.
De rien Gérard!
very handy. PENTAThx Jens!
Glad you like it!
Hi Jens,
I noticed that the Real Book version of Satin Doll is different from yours. Which version should I learn in your opinion ( If I must choose one )? Thank you very much for your time.
I think mine is pretty to play and some real books have a lot of mistakes.

Great lesson! Thank you 👍. Any specifics change for a bossa tune?
Thanks! I am not sure what you are asking exactly?
@@JensLarsen geen dank 😊. Sorry, I meant... would there be any special considerations if we applied this method to a bossa standard?
Jens, in the solo at the beginning of the video, I can really hear the melody of Satin Doll. Were you playing the minor pentatonic scales and targeting specific notes, as well as playing similar rhythms?
Thanks Joe! I am not really trying to emphasize the melody in that video, but it is a bit from the other video where I do 2 choruses with pentatonic scales: ua-cam.com/video/2gPXWQotuCY/v-deo.html
Yeah, I can really hear the melody at the beginning of that video too!
Joe Rimland It's the same solo, so that's not so strange.
Alright cool
+fire sword Let me know how it works out 😊
Ok
can you go over Cherokee arpeggios
Maybe I don't need to?
If you take the ones from Autumn Leaves and then you just need to add an Ab7 then you are covered for the A part.
For the B part:that's just II V I's in different keys so that should be quite easy to figure out from various lessons I've already done?
How does that sound?
You have any videos on your finger style playing
I guess you mean lessons? No, I don't have that. I learned classical guitar a million years ago and that is approximately the technique I use 🙂
@@JensLarsen well if you ever have the time it would be great to see a lesson on it
Long live jenslarsen
A little late to the party here, but a very interesting lesson for us minor pentatonic people. Using the minor pentatonic from the minor third looks like a tractable workaround while preparing to learn altered scales.
Jansen, fantastic videos, but there’s a lot of talking, which makes the whole lesson last too long and frustrating!..
Well, it is an old video, I got better in the last few years :)
Jens Larsen I definitely am not worthy criticising such a good musician and person like you Jens, but I guess I’m just one of those people that wants to use that one hour of free time productively... All the best for you, you’re a good man!!!
You talk waaaaay too much
You don't have to watch the videos if you don't want to 🙂
make it simple for beguiners
