  • For many more Duke Ellington releases go to:
    storyvillereco...
In the early 1960's the Goodyear Tire Company commisioned 5 short jazz films. The programs were originally filmed in 35 mm negative. The sound was recorded in professional stereo. Presenting the band in full vigor.
Over the years, the prints faded to pink, because of an unstable color print stock. What was once an extremely professional, good looking endavour, now looked like the most out of date historic relic.
In the late 80s Storyville Films polished and remastered the original source material and sync'ed music to the images.
Finally these films were back to their intended quality and now stand as some of the most technically advanced of jazz films of the early 60s.
This clip was recorded in NYC, January 9, 1962
The players of the orchestra in these clips are:
Trumpet: Ray Nance, Shorty Baker, Cat Anderson, Bill Berry, Ed Mullens
Trombone: Lawrence Brown, Leon Cox, Chuck Conners
    Alto-saxophone: Russell Procope, Johnny Hodges
    Tenor-saxophone: Paul Gonsalves
    Clarinet (and tenor-saxophone): Jimmy Hamilton
    Baritone-saxophone: Harry Carney
    Piano: Duke Ellington
    Bass: Aaron Bell
    Drums: Sam Woodyard

Our parents took us to see Duke Ellington at Steel Pier in Atlantic City before the Casinos. It was so fantastic, I'll never forget it. He was at that time what we used to call a "cool cat" even though he was up in years. So classy, handsome and charming.

My Dad named our cat Satin Doll after this, and met Duke Ellington in the late 60's or early 70's. He took a picture of him and got his autograph!
He wanted Lotus Blossom played at his funeral, which we did in 2013. ❤

When I was in high school, we had a girls dance squad that performed during half time shows with the marching band (and the pep band during basketball season). They were known as "The Satin Dolls", and this was their theme song. When the band broke into the opening bars of this song, the audience knew the girls were about to perform. They would use new choreography every week to a different song, keeping the shows fresh and entertaining. Good times!

I played this for my middle school jazz band, and let's just say, I miss playing in a jazz band. I'm definitely thinking about joining up in another one!

It's always exciting to find a new Duke Ellington video in great quality. Especially such a great chart (though Duke composed many great charts)
