There can never be enough videos of you. And of course there can never be enough videos about color and value. It’s a subject that I doubt anyone has ever gotten around to mastering. Thank you for all these wonderful lessons.
@@sandihesterI am sending my students over here to learn from you. Sometimes it’s good when they can hear it from multiple people. This was a beautifully thought out video. Love seeing your creative process on display.
Hi Sandi, I am a 76yr old novice and to start with I wasn’t getting this value etc stuff, but then when you demonstrated it the haha bells rang. I’ve been enjoying your videos for quite a while and have learned so much. I started just art journalling 1st Jan 2016, and now find myself expanding into the full art field and it’s so big and sooooo exciting. Love Trills, in NZ. 😊❤
Sandi, I have learned more about Value from your last two videos than I have in my previous 44 years of playing with art. Thank you so very much for your kindness and generosity in teaching us. (Incidentally, I think you are also a natural teacher!) 😘
Am I the only one who watches these videos in sessions so that it makes them last longer? Haha! This was SUCH a good one, Sandi! Thank you, again, for all that you do for us. It truly is appreciated, especially for the hard work that is put into each and every video.
Your teachings on value are a game changer for me!! I’ve heard of value from other art tutorials, but not in the way you express, explain and teach. I understand now the importance of value, pushing and pulling. So today I went back in to add value to a large painting I completed three years ago. What occurred before my eyes was so amazing that I was smiling and thrilled from top to toe!! There’s more depth, more excitement and movement, more energy and it’s now looking a richer and more vibrant painting. I have more confidence to now attend to my future paintings with an approach that is now considering value. Thank you from the bottom of my heart 💓
I ran home to watch this episode & sat down with pen & paper to jot notes, pause & rewind & jot some more, & that’s when you started to write in your sketchbook & I said “oh good!” because I really want to learn this. Thankyouthankyouthankyou!❤️
Hi Sandi, I really want to thank you!!!! I'm a new self taught artist, I watch your videos over and over and I have to say, this was the best learning video I have ever seen on value, I've taken classes, read books, logged 100's of hours watching you tube tutorials, you truly have a special ability to teach and explain, I just wanted you to know how much I really appreciate and look forward to your videos.
Sandi, you have such kind and generous energy so what you put out you get back! Not only are your videos wonderful and generous because we learn so much and it's normally stuff you'd pay for, it's also your personality that makes us viewers enjoy your videos so so much! This was another great one that I'm sure I'll return to repeatedly over time. Big hugs from the Netherlands!
Sandi, please always share your craft and knowledge with your online community. You are such a calming presence, and seeing your process is inspiring and such a joy to watch. Don't let the negative comments get you down. I know that's easier said than done. Just always remember that some of the greatest artists had critics. Van Gogh didn't sell a single piece while he was alive, and your pieces hang in people's homes right now! Thank you for your contributions to the online art community. Only stop when it's right for you.
I have honestly learned more about value from you and your videos than I learned from my undergrad art degree classes. THANK YOU for all the work you put in to share this knowledge with us. Thank you for not gatekeeping. Thank you for explaining things in a way that make sense and feel attainable. I admire you and your art practice so very much.
Sandi you are a wonderful teacher. You transform these concepts with your accessible, understandable definitions and applications. I appreciate all that you share with us.
Good afternoon Sandi!❤ I HOPE YOU NOTICE THAT I KEEP COMING BACK and now amid the Painting Birds Class, I have finally started to catch up (binge watching since Late 2023)…this was the MOST wonderful teaching video you have created…LOVED IT. LOVE it , you are wonderful, I learn slowly…Please keep um coming. Agree we can not get enough Understanding VALUE Xxxo Leslie
WOW, Sandi! These value videos are so amazing. I am a self taught artist who lives in mid-value land. My biggest struggle. Your videos make sense to me. Inspired to practice values so I can elevate my art. Thanks so much. Love you and your art. Corrie
Sandi, this was a masterclass in an hour. You’re so gentle and generous and funny! Most of your videos make me want to paint but this one REALLY made me wanted to learn more. Thank you. So many blessings. Oh. And the introduction to Maud Lewis. I literally cried when her saw her artwork. All the love to you XX
Hi Sandi! There is a landscape artist called Clarice Beckett who was a master of value. She followed a school of painting run by someone called Max Meldrum, where they were all taught to squint at the subject and place absolute priority on getting the values right. Value was prioritised ahead of colour or detail. There was a whole system to it which is really interesting to look up. Her paintings are absolutely beautiful . There is an amazing story to her as well, because her paintings they were almost lost because her family stored them all in a hay barn open to the weather, and they were only discovered recently. Her father thought her paintings were rubbish and wouldn’t let her have a studio, so she had to paint everything plein air. You might be interested in her! And also in the value system she followed. I keep intending to try it out. As always, I LOVE your videos and thank you so much for your hard work, generosity and warmth. It’s always a dose of happiness to watch your videos! 🥰💕
Thank you!! Sometimes I have a hard time really grasping the technicalities of art concepts that relate to color even though I went to graphic design school and have been making art for a long time. You really clarified some things for me in this video (and your last one with the swatching). You’re able to break it down and give just enough explanation and visual examples that I don’t get “lost in the weeds.” Plus, I LOVE your authenticity. I always look forward to your videos!
Thank you for everything you do for the art community Sandi! You gorgeous videos are always full of inspiration, great information, yummy visuals, permission and encouragement to play and explore, and most importantly you exemplify a positive mindset about how we should see our own art and all of that has been so invaluable to me. I thought I’d write to mention that since at the end the video you mentioned that some comments made you sometimes think about stopping to make videos and I was like nooooooo!!! lol they’re not talking badly to my Sandi!! Tell me who they are!! lol I know it might be easier said than done but try to not let those blobety blob comments make you think of stopping because you have super fans who anticipate your videos like nobody’s business. I’ve watched and loved every single one of them and have rewatched many over and over and I needs my Sandi fix, you hear? lol 💗
Thank you for that - I know lots of you watch and are so kind - I hate that a few bad comments can get me down but they do at times - not all the time but when you work so hard at something and then people don’t listen well and blast you it does hurt
@@sandihesterThose people are everywhere, don’t mind them! They don’t listen properly then rudely ask endless questions that are already answered in the video, ask things they could easily Google themselves, never say please or thank you, or else just write something nasty. This is my first time seeing one of your videos and, as so many others have commented, I have enjoyed it immensely and learned so much from it. This was absolutely fascinating, Sandi! I know I will be rewatching several times. Your insight is invaluable to me as I am learning about composition and value. So, so good! Thank you for sharing! Blessings!
Sandi ❤thank you so much for this video! So much to learn in art and painting! This is the very reason I love your vlog because you explain everything so well (even when you're not feeling so good! Now that's dedication 💚) I personally have learned so much from you these last few months especially when it comes to value and colour swatching 😁 I appreciate you! I pray you will make sure to rest your voice over the weekend 🙏🏽
I just want to thank you so much for all of this inspiring and educational content❤ In art classes, I’m not sure why but the colors and value work was never any fun, but seeing you so passionate really gives me creative inspo and energy 😊❤ Have a blessed weekend Sandi!
Sandi these last two videos on value have been my favorite videos thus far! I finally had an “aha!” moment with how to approach value. The way you teach has made painting/drawing so much more approachable and fun for me. This is definitely a video I’ll be returning back to!
I can’t understand how anyone could make a negative comment about anything you share! You’re a generous and wonderful artist and teacher. I love all of your videos and have watched and rewatched many of them. Always helpful and inspiring! Thanks again! 😘😊
Amazingly valuable information on values! You are a great teacher and inspiration! It really helps to learn the ABC’S and see you demo them. Thank you Sandi. ❤
Sandi, I am so excited to see where you might go with these more “art teacher”-style videos!! I was feeling a bit bummed when you went to only posting every-other week a few months ago, but if halving your posts is allowing you the spaciousness to make these “lesson plans,” it is so worth the extra wait :)
Thank you Sandi! I'm one of your silent followers. Time to tell you how much I enjoy your videos. You have such a lovely voice, and your art is inspiring! Thanks for keeping me company today while I sat on my art table! Much aloha from the islands!❤💕🌺🙋♀️
Thank you thank you Sandi!!!! You are sooo helpful. The time you give us is immensely appreciated. I am always anticipating seeing you here and your videos. ❤️
Thank you so much Sandi! I’ve been following you for a few months but always watched your videos without acting on the exercises. Today I’ve followed your values mixing video and this one and I’m blown away at how much I underestimated this skill. It’s made me look at all my work and now I understand why on some pieces I just could find that finished sweet spot. I had the values all in the mid, especially watercolours and glazing. This is a brilliant video and I’m so grateful for you and your lessons that are available on UA-cam. Thank you thank you! Wendy xx
I was shocked at how this video opened my eyes and mind further enabling me to improve my artwork. I CANNOT WAIT to experiment...not only painting, but studying accomplished painter's work. This is abolished for me. Thank you, Sandi💖💖💖💖💖💖💖👐🏻👍🏻👏🤗😁
Wow! Thank you so much for this video. It is choc full of teaching and examples. I struggle with thumb nails and planning, it was something Liz Steele loves doing and I struggled with it because I'm a detail/perfectionist my brain scrambles. You managed to demystify it for me. And you've inspired me to break out my set of gouache! Your explanations of value and composition are top. I realise I sort of do things by instinct, rather than planning, and you've pulled the bits of rules in my head together and expanded them into understanding. Thank you so much ❤
Hello Sandi. I'm Monica from Texas. I've loved doing some paintings with oil pastels but I had lost a touch and I found your videos last night. I'm really learning new ways to keep my paintings from transferring to a different page. Thank you so much for your videos.
A haven't learnt this much about color, value and composition since uni. This video has so much condensed info in so little time, it's eye-opening. Thank you so much for all the tips!!
Not only were these examples SO stunning (especially Emily Powell’s blue boat 🤩 I immediately had to go follow), but also your explanation was very helpful! Thanks for a great video!!
Really brilliant Sandy. I could (and will) easily watch this over again and again; taking notes, thinking, planning, visualising. Thank you for your time and effort. 😃
You are such a natural teacher Sandi and your knowledge, generosity, encouragement and humour are what keeps us all coming back❤️ Thank you so so much for sharing all of this valuable information in such a fun and positive way, I feel like I'm learning so much from you🙏🏼
Hi from Australia Sandi.... I catch up with your videos whenever I need to do the ironing! What a great, fun way to pass the time. They're so informative and there is always something new. Thanks so much for sharing your time and expertise.
I so appreciate all the time you put into your videos. They always inspire me to keep being creative, let go and have fun. I wish I could erase any unkind comments. When people are not nice it reminds me of Brene Brown's talk "Step into the Arena". Getting on social media takes courage because it leaves us vulnerable. Keep sharing (as long as it is fun for you), because WE creative people appreciate ALL you do for us. Sending love
Thank you Sandi and Kudos! So much thought & time went into this video so we can understand value. So many examples from paintings, books, art yours and other and live demo! You gave us a masterclass 💕🙏🏻💕
This has helped me so much with composition! Thank you so much Sandy! I’ve struggled with composition for years, and listened to others explain it, and it just never clicked for me. Understanding value in regards to eye leading and focal point not just ‘lines’ is such an ‘eye opener’ 😋 Now off to practice!
Love love love this week.. Always enjoy your videos and learn so much as well as share a laugh with your sense of humour but this week was super dooper informative. As soon as I finish this comment I am rushing to my studio to play. Thank you so much for your generosity. With thanks from Lynn, Australia 🦘🌞
Thanks Sandi, I think you are just wonderful. I have been painting for a long time and teach a mixed media group and you really add to my knowledge as well as inspire me in my own work and in my teaching.
My comment showers you with gratitude! Holy cow. This video really challenged me. I learned so much and tried to follow along and introduce values I normally don't grab. And thanks for sharing Maud Lewis. I'm going to have to watch this video a few times to really get it!
I do so look forward to your 2weekly vids, Sandi! Thankyou so much for the lesson on value. It helped explain what I have intuitively found pleasing but could not articulate. Also, hope you are feeling better soon.
I really appreciate your videos and little lessons with examples. I get it much more when you show me. I am 65 years old. I don't think it is to late to brush up on what I was taught years ago while in school. Thank you so much.
So helpful thank you Sandi - the videos are informative and fun and relaxing and I could listen for hours! Very grateful for your generosity in sharing all your tips and your exuberant and joyful artwork.
I first saw this video last March, I keep coming back to review your lessons. I found .this video to be most valuable in my work. So happy to have it. Thank you Sandi!! ;)
Great lesson, Sandi! I found this video so helpful to understand value. You make it so OKAY to be a beginner! TYSM! I also really enjoy your fun personality and wonderful sense of humor!! Xo
Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou 🤗 . This is wonderful learning for me and I am so grateful to you for the generosity you show in sharing your own learning and yourself, you are truly one of life’s lovelies ❤️
The best lesson in value I have seen - thank you so much for sharing. I am taking this information to a painting class I am attending tomorrow - love your work sooo much.
Thank you so much for explaining and demonstrating so clearly tonal values. It's the one thing that has always confused me. You are so lovely to watch and listen to, even though you had a scratchy voice ( I hope you have recovered ?) I look forward to the next video, and do appreciate how much time you put into making these. Once again, many thanks.
Ay yi yi! I am still mixing color from your last video and loving it! I can't get to this video until Sunday...I want to give you my full and undivided attention. Looking forward to this with pen in hand to take notes! Thank you, Sandi!
Than you, Sandi. As a self taught painter (can't bring myself to say artist😆), I've never really understood value, so this has been fab and will be so useful. You have also inspired me to loosen up my overly 'tidy' style. As a tight painter, this is a real challenge and I laugh at myself when I find myself naturally getting fussy. Be more Sandi, I have to say.
Sandi THANKYOU for this video so much. I have done lots of tutorials, study etc trying to get colour, value and design but this is by far the best - you have a gift for teaching in a nice easy to understand way. I loved it, thank you for all the hard work/time I know you would have put in!
I have been following you for a few years and I think you’re inspirational and full of energy. Thank you for sharing so much of yourself! You put so much work into this particular video and I very much appreciate it. You’re an amazing beautiful soul. Thank you!
I’ve recently discovered you and I’m in love with your videos! Thank to you I feel so much more free in my art and I care much less about what people think. I got so much from this video! Thanks for all you do!
A amazing lesson on value - I have had such a hard time understanding this concept and putting it into practice. This video along with the first has helped me begin to grasp what value means, and how it should be used when creating. I especially like your walk through of other artists work and the practical approach you showed in your demonstration. I am sure this is a video I will rewatch like so many others of yours to hone in on all the wonderful information. And I like so many others here will continue to remind you what a tremendous "value" you are to me as a teacher, artist, encourager and all around wonderful person. Thank you again for all your hard work in making this and so many of your other videos, instagram reels/stories and sharing of your life and work - it is so appreciated!
Great teaching! Yours is the best practical explanation of tone that I’ve ever seen. I’ve been recreating some of your examples with a set of markers in six shades of gray. Many thanks!

Thanks so much for taking the time to make this video! -Learning so much from you. Really appreciate all you share ❤
This is one of the best videos I've ever seen for explaining/understanding value. Thank you, Sandi!
Very much appreciated that you make such educational and entertaining videos!
Glad you like them!
Thank you Sandi! I'm one of your silent followers. Time to tell you how much I enjoy your videos. You have such a lovely voice, and your art is inspiring! Thanks for keeping me company today while I sat on my art table! Much aloha from the islands!❤💕🌺🙋♀️
Thank you so much!
Wow Sandi this video lesson is so great and blown away by your generosity in sharing your knowledge like this.
Thank you Sandi, I've been meaning to come back to this tutorial for ages, I learn't so much, thank you thank you
Thank you thank you Sandi!!!!
Wendy xx
Excellent, much-needed information…thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
You teach us so much. Ive noticed how your style has changed over the years.
Really brilliant Sandy. I could (and will) easily watch this over again and again; taking notes, thinking, planning, visualising. Thank you for your time and effort. 😃
Wonderful!
I'm so excited for this! Last weeks video was very informative. Ready to tuck in! 😊
I'm so glad!
Fascinating! You've made it so clear with your sketchy bits and the other finished article examples. Thank you.
Just brilliant. Those little thumbnails made the concept of value so clear!
Wonderful video! A great part 2 to last week's video. Explaining as you sketched the concept was very powerful. Thanks as always for sharing with us!
Amazing video. Substance content. Will watch again and take notes. You need a PATREON!!!!!!!!!!!! Luv u!
Love this so much Sandi…. Or only a good reminder , but also to help us understand more your work too!
Very helpful videos on value Sandi. Thank you. I’ve been painting for over two decades and found this to be a great refresher course!😊
Hey Sandi! Thanks for showing me the value of values! ❤
Thanks Sandi, I think you are just wonderful. I have been painting for a long time and teach a mixed media group and you really add to my knowledge as well as inspire me in my own work and in my teaching.
Thank you so much, Sandi. So clear. And even with a "scratchy voice", your narration was pitch perfect. 🤩
I just hated my voice was so bad 😭🤪
I truly feel like you have shown me the light 💛🙏 Thankyou for such a fun teaching of such a fundamental.
Thank you so much, Sandi! Your videos and classes are helping me tremendously in building a painting practice. The value lessons are a huge help!
Glad it was helpful!
I really appreciate your videos and little lessons with examples. I get it much more when you show me. I am 65 years old. I don't think it is to late to brush up on what I was taught years ago while in school. Thank you so much.
You're very welcome!
Yes!! Super helpful, super clear and simple. Definitely feel like I understand more of why some things work and somethings don't. 🥰
Xo
Wow... the entire video 😊. The last Homely House, "Happy new year and welcome".😊 Ann😊
You’re an amazing educator. Love your videos, they are binge worthy!
Fantastic info and demo. So helpful and clear and easy to understand. Thank you!!!!!!!
This was so valuable to me! Thank you for taking the time for each steps and examples. You are awesome! Thanks for sharing your knowledge
Another wonderful and informative video! Thank you for your kindness and generosity ❤
Thanks for these videos. I always look forward to them and learn new techniques all the time. You are fantastic.
This video is a masterpiece! Thank you, Sandi, for everything you do here on UA-cam!
Awe - thanks!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and your kindness. These videos were amazing. So helpful to me.
Ay yi yi! I am still mixing color from your last video and loving it!
I can't get to this video until Sunday...I want to give you my full and undivided attention. Looking forward to this with pen in hand to take notes!
Thank you, Sandi!
Sounds great!
Thank you Sandy! The demonstrations are so helpful.
I'm so glad! Thank you!
I have been following you for a few years and I think you’re inspirational and full of energy. Thank you for sharing so much of yourself! You put so much work into this particular video and I very much appreciate it. You’re an amazing beautiful soul. Thank you!
Thank you so much!!🥰❤️
I’ve recently discovered you and I’m in love with your videos!
