My mother passed away earlier this year after having been paralyzed and mute for the last 18 years from a stroke. We read the standing at the gate "give me my wings" lyrics at the service. Most people probably had no idea what it was from bcs she was 72 but I can't hardly make it through that part. 🙏

We lost a lot of moms this year, mine included, and I too used this song as part of her eulogy. I had the pastor read it, 'cause I knew I'd never make it through.
And now it's our first Xmas without her.
      All our sympathies.

The beginning of the song always makes me visualize a heartbeat slowly winding to a stop. And when the fuller more dynamic sound starts swirling around the headphones just after... it makes me visualize a new journey that her spirit is embarking upon after life.

Lost Keys Blame Hoffman & Rosetta Stoned is dear to me.
I knew a fella that spent some time in an institution for their encounters w/ UFOS.
Ruined a lot of their life after. But they are holding on. Still claims to see plenty of them still. Says the more they were silenced the more sightings they had.
      Weird.
“such a hefty burden to have to be the one” - Great line.

There were people at his Mom's church who were total hypocrites. They would gossip about her illness and would say that somehow she, herself brought it on because of something she might have done or not having enough faith. They would talk about her behind her back. The lyrics, "Ignorant fibbers in the congregation spewing sympathy.....Spare me!" You can feel his love and pain so deeply with both of these songs.

This was the issue with my wife's illness. I hated the church she gravitated toward. Full of hypocrisy. Insisted prayer would save her and abandoned her when she opted for science. She made it 8 more years thank goodness. When she passed from brain cancer we had her service at my mother-in-laws church and not one of those people showed up. Every time I listen to this I tear up thinking about her.

IMO, this is one of the greatest musical pieces ever written. The music and lyrics are absolutely intertwined, the dynamics, the progression of the song as he deals with the funeral and his anger, but at the end how he lets her go...

This is such a beautiful tribute to a life loved and a life forever altered due to the loss of a loved one. i think one of the biggest takeaways i have learned from this is song is how much it speaks to Tool's confidence in their musical abilities to dedicate 17.5 minutes of time for a song (on a CD which allows at most 80 minutes) that is essentially for Maynard and really the band as a whole. I'm not sure how much of a relationship any of the other members had with Maynards mother but you can tell they definitely each put their heart and souls into their instrumentals to convey the dark and mourning atmosphere they were trying to create and it gives me chills every time so it wouldnt surprise me if when she passed, they felt as though they lost someone as well which allowed them as a band to create such a beautiful masterpiece dedicated to her

Such a beautiful piece, and both are part of the greater work that he dedicated to his mother. May she rest in peace.
To think that he left himself so vulnerable with this song that he has begun to express regret because he doesn't want the performances to suffer, I believe he deserves reassurance for sharing his vulnerability with us. Thank you for sharing your reaction.

What you also have to understand is that Maynard was historically pretty atheist. He has another song under A Perfect Circle called Judith that is literally him hating on her belief of any god who would choose to handicap her. This is actually probably the most straightforward songs TOOL has ever produced when it comes to metaphors. It's him looking at his dead mom and trying to figure out what to say to people who he feels aren't as faithful (himself included).

I hate that people use this lyrical video. It is BURDEN OF PROOF TOSSED UPON THE BELIEVERS... not "non-believers." This was clearly posted by some Jesus freak who wants to believe Maynard is somehow saying the burden of proof is on the non-believer. Ridiculous. Maynard is saying: despite being set in my ways and my arrogance of a non-believer, where the burden of proof is tossed on the person who believes in this garbage, you, Mom, were my burden of proof with your unconditional faith.
