I cry my eyes out almost every time I listen to this. I've lost more than a few people in my life and I can't think of a more beautiful tribute to the ones I love and can no longer tell it to
Hearing that lyric, "Hard to see you in this light" reminds me heavily of when my grandmother was in the hospital dying of throat cancer, seeing her like that, in that light as the last thing I saw of her. It shattered me utterly through and through. It hurts, so much to see a loved one in pain like this, or on the end of their mortal life. Every time I hear that I break the hell down with tears in my eyes.
It's way better than Bts aha.. I really dislike Bts, there was a chance I would have listened to them, if it wasn't for the fans. Maynard keeps most of us fans in check.
I want to join the chorus of those advocating for Lateralus and Right in Two. There's such richness in those songs (as with so many in the Tool catalog) ... one listen will not be enough.
Wings For Marie (Pt. 1)" You believed. You believed in movements none could see You believed in me. A passionate spirit. Uncompromised Boundless and open. A light in your eyes, then, immobilized. Vacant, broken. Fell at the hands of Those movements that I wouldn't see. 'Cause it was you who prayed for me so What have I done to be a son to an angel? What have I done to be worthy? Day light dims leaving cold fluorescence. Difficult to see you in this light. Please forgive this selfish question, but What am I to say to all these ghouls tonight? She never told a lie. Well might've told a lie, But never lived one. Didn't have a life. Didn't have a life. But surely saved one. Saved one. See? I'm alright, now It's time for us to let you go.
This song and 10,000 Days are deeply personal songs for me. I feel like I lived this exact situation with my Grandmother who is very much like Judith... and I had a very difficult time with my faith watching cancer slowly torture my grandmother over time. When she finally passed there was a relief and a sense of peace, and I prayed that her faith would be rewarded.
I really like your guys reaction videos. I envy you guys who are experiencing Tool for the first time.. I remember how I felt back in the 90s. True to their name, they are a tool to take you someplace else and no other band does what they do. They are one of just a handful of musicians that changed my life and even helped me out of some bad spots. Welcome to the Tool army.
This is just my interpretation, but I think the line "She never told a lie, Well, might've told a lie, but never lived one." sums up Maynard's attitude towards his mother's faith. He doesn't agree with Christianity, but he respects that his mom believed in it honestly and with all of her conviction. His major problem with religion seems to be hypocrisy, not so much the belief in itself.
Spiritual atheism is counter intuitive, because one must define proof of a "spirit" with hard evidence. 99% it becomes word soup argumentation like many theology positions can drift into.
Several things which exist are counter intuitive. Like the differences between gravitation and electricity, when moving away from the source. Gravity dissipates to the square, where plasma dissipates to the square root. The latter is counter-intuitive, but is necessary for any electrical engineer.
I never really paid attention too deeply in these later TOOL albums (was a huge fan of Aenima and Undertow) and some of this information about his mother def brings a new meaning to some of these songs, and must revisit them. This one def hit home alot more knowing the lyrics and meaning behind it. Keep up the awesome reactions folks! Really digging them!
Your review made me cry and I'm not joking 😅, the lyrics and the instruments fit perfectly to transmit the message and the feeling of the emptiness of a missing person , you are so right about the phases that Maynard passed through the songs. I'm excited about the second part of this video because "10 000 days" talks so much more about the faith of his mother
My mother is a stroke patient and has been paralyzed for over 4 years and every damn day is a struggle seeing her this way especially knowing how she is the strongest human being I've ever known and her spirit remains unbroken. This song and the others about his mother say it perfectly for me.
Wings for Marie and 10000 days are both a great song but make an epic singular work. Everytime I listen to these I am still moved. Very excited for the next part of this series.
"What am I to say to all these ghouls tonight?" I took this to mean the people from the church on death watch, asking about her and Maynard having to tell them she finally passed away. He feels they are ghouls. I dunno if that is right, but it was what I got from the lyric...
You’re close. When he says ghouls he is referencing the congregation and it’s derogatory bc he’s upset with their hypocrisy. Which is another reason why he’s questioning God as to why Marie is suffering yet the congregation is fine.
I just stumbled onto your channel, and couldn't be happier that I did. I've listened to this song before, and it reminded me of my relationship with my own mother (very pious mother, unbelieving son), but your review helped me to further reconcile this relationship in that I'm not the only one to go through this, but want to somehow make it work. You've gained a dedicated follower, thank you, and keep up the amazing work!
the combination of the music and the words he speak are going hand in hand... Tool is just incredible. they use the hertz sequences to go deep inside your soul.
Great Part 1, Excellent discussion! I have no doubt your reaction to 10,000 days will be even better. Can’t wait to see your reaction to even more Tool songs as well.
I just found this song after watching you guy's videos. It immediately made me think of my Momma. I've spent the last seven months underwater inside a submarine. I had no communication with the outside world. I was lucky to see her again on the pier to welcome me home. I spent the next three days with her before she returned home on the other side of the States. She's the only woman I've lean on through the good times and the bad times. A couple of weeks ago, my momma put a gun to her head and took her own life. I don't understand it. I never will. But one thing I do know is this song allows me to cope with the pain I've been feeling in my heart these past weeks. Thank you both for sharing this.
Apparently, Maynard called the people from his mom's church Ghouls. They were the ones that inspired him to write Judith for APC. you can see in this song that she is dying and he is asking her the selfish question of what is he supposed to tell her congregation.
Good reaction, again. I swear, we would be friends in another life. I'm not Christian, but very spiritual and accepting of others views. Keep listening to great music! I'm really starting to look forward to your reactions.
Oh wow I had an emotional moment there. Haven't listened to this album in a few years and I forgot how potent and powerful this song was. You both gave a great breakdown btw 👍 Highly recommend Lateralus (and if you want his best vocal 'wow he has lungs' moment then listen to The Grudge).

“What am I to say to all these ghouls tonight” I think he means that tonight is her funeral and he’s expected to make a speech and/or just interact with everyone. I think “ghouls” was a jab at the people that are never there for her until her death, as ghouls are said to be attracted to and feed on the dead.
My brother was completely incapacitated by Cerebral Palsy his whole life. Trapped in a useless body for just over 13,000 days. His faith never waivered. So much of Tool's songs resonate with me. I think there is a difference between song writers and composers. The more I listen to Tool, the more I'm convinced they belong to the latter.
16:52 couldn't agree more there. the music is all written before maynard gets it and then he is free to interpret and add his piece and own feelings to it.
The echoing impact at the end. It’s the lid of the casket closing. 10000 days is filling in the grave with the sound at the end being the last shovel full.
LOL looks like Sori has slipped down the slippery slope of slipperiness known as Tool Love. Welcome sister! We are all family here. I like to consider we empassioned fans, Tooligans. If Slipknot has their 'maggots', we are the Tool Army/Tooligans.
wow wow wow.... So these two songs are hugely impactful on me...at this point in my life, I can't listen to either one of these without getting emotional and shaken to the core with how real this is. My mom passed when i was 10, she wasn't religious, but she loved me in her own way. She was diagnosed with Brain Cancer about a year after I was born, after hher surgeries...she was a changed person...she was young...and was only just getting to a point where youth ends, and life begins...You're going to love Part II.
I love you two very much! Thank you for your videos. I am from Kent, Ohio and have ties to Judy through mutual friends. She took my friend to get her ears pierced when she was a little girl❤️
Tess Boyd passed on the 15th btw. She was 94. I painted her coffin in branches with leaves, and four fantail birds. I named it Wings for Theresa. So this is really hitting home for me. "jIMMY" talks about Home.
Again Vin hits the nail on the head with the evolution of Maynards thought process😉 And again yes. The Music says as much as if not more than the lyrics😀 another excellent interpretation and review.
What am I to tell the ghouls tonight, I'm pretty sure is a dig at the hypocritical congregation from Judith that called her an inspiration. Now he has to stand up and eulogize his mother to those people he still loathes who were false friends, the people that fanned the flames of his rage to cause Judith to be a song he had to write.
Why does this have so few likes? This was really good discussion. I had thought about the music composition for this song as well and u guys are the first who mention it I've found.
Just a heads up (really late), the song Jimmy from Ænema also ties into this story. It's about Maynard (Jimmy) having to move in with his Dad in Ohio when he was 11 years old and his mother became paralyzed. Amazing and touching song. One of my favorites by Tool.
It’s amazing how I can connect with you guys just like if I was there next to you watching the same thing. As a devout atheist I’m very amazed by your open-minded insight regarding metal and rock and how you can dissect songs and lyrics very deeply (even if I don’t agree nevertheless). But I love your take on the lyrics. New fun and subscribers for sure. I think the song “Tool- Reflection” would be interesting for you guys. It is by far Tool’s most spiritual song and very redeeming. Would love to see you guys dissect it. Love from the republic of Latvia.
A lot of reactors hear the music they react too but they don't listen to the music. Even just the way you immediately picked up on the line about daylight dimming and cold flourescents being a hospital room. I'm excited to see and hear more Tool reactions from the two of you.
"the music communicates" you are so right. I can't wait for you guys to react to Lateralus and see the attention to detail and hidden meanings behind the entire song. The lyrics and instrumentation attach themselves to one central meaning, definitely need to watch the lyric video for it though.
Yeah man, I didn't let the video ride out, like you said,he says A LOT WITHOUT SAYING SO MUCH !! Damn man it's refreshing to hear others interpretations of it!
I think the lines "daylight dims leaving cold fluoresence, difficult to see you in this light..." is during the eulogy or whatever you call it in English, at church, when everybody's there to say goodbyes, especially because it's followed by "what am I to say to all these ghouls tonight?" Ghouls being all those 'close' relatives who really didn't care during her lifetime, but then are there to 'shed tears of cozened indigo'... This part always takes me back to my best friend's mom's funeral. Cold winter day in Northern Europe, starts getting dark around 3pm, those narrow church windows only letting in so much light, my bro up there looking at his mom for the last time with tears in his eyes, only time I've seen that too... Leaves literally a dark blue memory, hence the cold fluroesence :(
I wouldn't be so quick to think that the Maynard's Mom series goes in order. Anyone who has worked through grief or shock knows that you kind of bounce around the stages throughout your life, relapsing back into various stages again and again depending on which color it expresses itself as when broken through the prism of where your are in life overall at the time.
Sorry for 1000 comments but as the vid continues I am relating more and more. I lost my mother 2 years ago and I connect so much with these songs of Maynard's.
I’m pretty sure the A Perfect Circle song “Passive” fits into this story as well. I thought the Maynard’s mom trilogy was Judith, wings for Marie/10,000 days, and Passive. Wings and 10000 days are typically seen as one song, not two.
Great video guys.. not sure if you were aware but this is only part 1 of wings for Marie... it's actually released in 2 tracks.. you should react to part 2 also.. if you have I haven't seen it. Thanks. Keep up the good work
Damnit man.. this song. Gets me Everytime! Ballin my eyes out at 530 am on Sunday before work. Just found your channel last night. Looking to listen to Jimmy cause I was in that mood. And saw a reaction to it. Wasn't going to watch Because I didn't want any interruptions in the song but I got to say im Loving this discussion afterwards. Great job guys. Subbed and can't wait until I get home to watch you reaction to 10000 Days.
Great reaction guys... I hope you guys listened to this and 10,000 days in one listen on the album this goes right into 10,000 days without a pause it’s almost one song. Great either way! Keep it up
Intermission/Jimmy should have been the start, but you can still finish with it and come to a full understanding of how an 11 year old boy felt when his mother was basically taken away from him by illness.
sori i cant wait for you to get through all these tool songs with us so you're free to listen at your pleasure. not really any bad tool songs. they put their all into their music and you can always feel that. cant wait for you be able to listen to the albums the whole way through the way they were meant to be listened to
I’d like to see Gojira, Art of Dying. Super heavy and interesting. Chevelle is another awesome band I haven’t seen anyone react to. Get Some, Shameful Metaphors, or Straight Jacket Fashion are all great Chevelle songs.
Thank you so much for this reaction. I believe we have two new members in the TOOL army 😉. I am an atheist but i really enjoy and respect your views on things. As Peter Reese mentioned. Right in Two would be a perfect song. A lot of religious references in that song. Anyway : bring up 10000 days 🤘
I don’t know if anybody let you know, but there is a fourth song in the “Maynard’s Mom” saga. It is a song that predates Judith musically and in terms of the “mom” storyline. The song is called Jimmy. Maynard’s first name is actually James. His mother called him Jimmy. You might be interested in the “prequel”(if you will) since you’ve completed the trilogy.
I took the trilogy as in Judith she's in the hospital and doing poorly, but is alive. In Wings, she has just died and the "what do i tell the ghouls" line being the people outside pretending to care, and 10,000 Days is like the funeral.
... new sub and new Fan!!! :) Love the dynamic you both have and the insight (with the little you’ve shared of your backgrounds) ... Maynard’s emotional struggle with organized religion and faith (based on what we know of his life experiences) is fascinating to see as you look at each of Tool’s and PC’s albums... from the anger of youth (Oppiate, Undertow, Aenima) to the struggle to understand (Lateralus) to a form of acceptance (10000days) ... to even themes about Fatherhood (Puscifer) ... the vulnerability is takes to write like Maynard.... hotDAMN!!!
The transitional song between Judith and 10,000 days/Wings for Marie/ vigneti Tres would be The Patient. That's the missing link of the emotional change between the songs
To elaborate on the 'God' and 'Christ' comments regarding Judith, Maynard explained in the aMOTION DVD that when he says that, he's not talking about the actual God and Christ, but YOUR God and Christ. Aka the personal ones people make for themselves. There's a bit more to it than that I forget since it's been a while since I've watched that DVD, but yeah. That's basically the jist of it.
this lyric video is beautiful and the official music videos are amazing, BUT personally I feel that the best way to experience/listen to Tool, especially for the first time for a certain song, is eyes shut. hits and sinks much deeper
ua-cam.com/video/EFjEp79zaNw/v-deo.html read the discription andddd u may wanna save it because to me this was as good as it got.. i mean how do u even freaking do this?
I cry my eyes out almost every time I listen to this. I've lost more than a few people in my life and I can't think of a more beautiful tribute to the ones I love and can no longer tell it to

That ones coming up real soon
I lost my mom too “it was you who prayed for me so what have I done to be a son to an angel, what have I done to be worthy?”
So you know...
All too well
So good to delve into the lyrics and appreciate the love and respect he had for his mother, 10,000 days is even better imo. Great job guys.
Yes! We feel the same ...!!!
Wings For Marie (Pt. 1)"
You believed.
You believed in movements none could see
You believed in me.
A passionate spirit.
Uncompromised
Boundless and open.
A light in your eyes, then, immobilized.
Vacant, broken.
Fell at the hands of
Those movements that I wouldn't see.
'Cause it was you who prayed for me so
What have I done to be a son to an angel?
What have I done to be worthy?
Day light dims leaving cold fluorescence.
Difficult to see you in this light.
Please forgive this selfish question, but
What am I to say to all these ghouls tonight?
She never told a lie.
Well might've told a lie,
But never lived one.
Didn't have a life.
Didn't have a life.
But surely saved one.
Saved one.

Michael Bayles the belief in a higher consciousness than self, does not require a deity of self. Some see it as spiritual atheism.

This maybe the most beautiful song ever dedicated to a single human being in the spance of our time
At the beginning of the song you hear the funeral Church bell calling.
Sori your outfit is banging. Love the shirt
Man this song is so sad, the ending hits me so hard. Such a great song!
Totally !!
i get chills every time
I love the way Vin approaches tool music
Wings for marie and 10,000 days made me choke up first time i heard them and read the lyrics.. Tool are the masters of emotion!!!
A lot of reactors hear the music they react too but they don't listen to the music. Even just the way you immediately picked up on the line about daylight dimming and cold flourescents being a hospital room. I'm excited to see and hear more Tool reactions from the two of you.
Thanks man!’ Appreciate that !!
When I hear those lyrics I see Maynard looking at his mothers dead body in a morgue or funeral home.
Never fails to bring tears to my eyes
Ya it was real!! ✌🏻
I love your Tool reaction videos
Check out our project update vids!
I will, thanks! Binge watching your videos right now.
"the music communicates" you are so right. I can't wait for you guys to react to Lateralus and see the attention to detail and hidden meanings behind the entire song. The lyrics and instrumentation attach themselves to one central meaning, definitely need to watch the lyric video for it though.
We’ll be posting an update video soon as to what our lateralus plan is !
Losing mom has got to suck soooo badly. -Sori🤟🏻
I’m pretty sure the A Perfect Circle song “Passive” fits into this story as well. I thought the Maynard’s mom trilogy was Judith, wings for Marie/10,000 days, and Passive. Wings and 10000 days are typically seen as one song, not two.
Good point many folks have told us they are one song, so your math works
“Jimmy” is in that equation as well.
Jimmy Judith Passive Wings and 10,000
Did you watch Blood Into Wine? Great little movie on him and his wine. Very cool.
Great video guys.. not sure if you were aware but this is only part 1 of wings for Marie... it's actually released in 2 tracks.. you should react to part 2 also.. if you have I haven't seen it. Thanks. Keep up the good work
I love these 2. And I really love tool. This will be a great UA-cam relationship going forward. Lol subscribing now
This song get's me every single time. Also, you two are awesome.
Another song you would definitely enjoy in regards to this is "Puscifer - Momma Sed"
Keep it up
Yes we did! Next part tomorrow!!
Intermission/Jimmy should have been the start, but you can still finish with it and come to a full understanding of how an 11 year old boy felt when his mother was basically taken away from him by illness.
I'm a non believer but I love, appreciate and respect the way you guys have handled the first to parts of this. I'll comment again after 10,000 days
sori i cant wait for you to get through all these tool songs with us so you're free to listen at your pleasure. not really any bad tool songs. they put their all into their music and you can always feel that. cant wait for you be able to listen to the albums the whole way through the way they were meant to be listened to
Yessss!!! I anxiously await that! Seriously!!!
Ps, Maynard's other band Pucifer is worth investigating. Especially their latest album Money Shot (tracks like Agostina and Grand Canyon)
I’d like to see Gojira, Art of Dying. Super heavy and interesting.
Chevelle is another awesome band I haven’t seen anyone react to. Get Some, Shameful Metaphors, or Straight Jacket Fashion are all great Chevelle songs.
Love chavelle have never heard those songs
Yes great choices on Chevelle Joe!
Gojira is epic
You’re awesome guys! Please do Katatonia - Journey Through Pressure
On the list !!
Also "Serein","New Night",Forsaken" are good options.Basically, anything that this band puts out is...you'll see for yourself
Coming in less than ten thousand days ..😀
I've listened to Judith and this song so many times, but i've never really looked at the lyrics and context. this was beautiful.
Great work!
Jimmy, Jambi, Lateralus, Vicarious, eh, too many to name...
Lol! Got them all on the list!!
Tool are the absolute greatest band. By miles.
Judith was bitterness and anger, and wings for marie was acceptance
I don’t know if anybody let you know, but there is a fourth song in the “Maynard’s Mom” saga. It is a song that predates Judith musically and in terms of the “mom” storyline. The song is called Jimmy. Maynard’s first name is actually James. His mother called him Jimmy. You might be interested in the “prequel”(if you will) since you’ve completed the trilogy.
Yes it’s the prequel to the trilogy !
That’s what we’ve been calling it!
I took the trilogy as in Judith she's in the hospital and doing poorly, but is alive. In Wings, she has just died and the "what do i tell the ghouls" line being the people outside pretending to care, and 10,000 Days is like the funeral.
3:55 @Sori That moment when you realize you just really friggin love Tool. :0D
... new sub and new Fan!!! :) Love the dynamic you both have and the insight (with the little you’ve shared of your backgrounds) ... Maynard’s emotional struggle with organized religion and faith (based on what we know of his life experiences) is fascinating to see as you look at each of Tool’s and PC’s albums... from the anger of youth (Oppiate, Undertow, Aenima) to the struggle to understand (Lateralus) to a form of acceptance (10000days) ... to even themes about Fatherhood (Puscifer) ... the vulnerability is takes to write like Maynard.... hotDAMN!!!
Yes I agree! So many layers to everything they all write !
Another song about his mom is Jimmy by Tool
Yep! That’s basically the “prequel” to the trilogy
WEVE CONVERTED SORI BOYS!
Yes!!! U have no idea!!! -Sori
Sori always looks so nice and dressed up
The transitional song between Judith and 10,000 days/Wings for Marie/ vigneti Tres would be The Patient. That's the missing link of the emotional change between the songs
Gotcha
I could be totally wrong about it but it seems to fit
To elaborate on the 'God' and 'Christ' comments regarding Judith, Maynard explained in the aMOTION DVD that when he says that, he's not talking about the actual God and Christ, but YOUR God and Christ. Aka the personal ones people make for themselves. There's a bit more to it than that I forget since it's been a while since I've watched that DVD, but yeah. That's basically the jist of it.
Ya saw that part !
check out Jimmy its supposed to be about his mom as well and it came out way before Judith
Ya that’s what we’ve heard
An absolute necessity to understand everything is to start with Jimmy.
I think we’re going to have to do a “prequel” to the trilogy Sori
Star wars style. lol.
Exactly lol
You got it bad girl...Nothing compares to TOOLS music.
this lyric video is beautiful and the official music videos are amazing, BUT personally I feel that the best way to experience/listen to Tool, especially for the first time for a certain song, is eyes shut. hits and sinks much deeper
My Friends now listen to the Wings for marie part 1 and 2 Viginti Tres synced up... That is the true masterpiece. Jus look up the synced video..
Link?
ua-cam.com/video/EFjEp79zaNw/v-deo.html read the discription andddd u may wanna save it because to me this was as good as it got.. i mean how do u even freaking do this?
Thank you !
No. thank you guys!! Im enjoying your perspective... Keep it up!!
On the way !!!
Jimmy wasn’t Maynards Uncle.
Jimmy was Maynard’s name in school. Jim Keenan.
