Today we’re going to talk about DHEA and menopause. There are therapeutic benefits of DHEA for men, but in this video, we’re going to focus on the benefits of DHEA for women.
DHEA is a steroid hormone precursor. Cholesterol is a precursor for DHEA, and DHEA is a precursor for estrogen, androgens, and other steroid hormones. DHEA is one of the most abundant circulating steroids in the body, but DHEA diminishes by 70-80% with age. So, the older you get, the less estrogen and androgens you’re going to have.
DHEA is sold as a supplement or as a medication. You can increase your DHEA naturally by exercising, fasting, and calorie restriction. Having enough DHEA can also help protect against insulin resistance.
It’s important if taking DHEA to start out with very low amounts (10mg-30mg per day). If you take too much, you can end up making too many androgens. You don’t want to take DHEA if you have too much estrogen or androgens. If you have PCOS, you wouldn’t want to take DHEA.
High androgens in females can cause:
    • Acne
    • Oily skin
    • Increased body hair
    DHEA is used:
    • For adrenal insufficiency
    • With menopausal hormone therapy
    • To treat painful sexual intercourse due to vaginal atrophy
    • To increase libido

I was taking DHEA along with Bio identical estrogen, progesterone testosterone. On my last lab results my DHEA rose pretty high for me. I like to keep it at 100 and it rose to over 300. My testosterone levels were good so stopped taking the DHEA. Big mistake. I just had new labs drawn and both my estrogen and testosterone plummeted. I will be taking the DHEA again. 10 mg works for me.

Dr. Berg, you have helped me on so many levels. I contacted Covid in January of this year, the 15th to be exact. After two weeks I was worse. My primary care physician refused any treatment or help for me, And would not give any medication to help aid the situation.
I was symptomatic with many different and unusual symptoms and it was scary.
It’s August 14th and I am still coughing. Most of the other symptoms have stopped thankfully. I believe that this is because I started following your advice, about everything! I take supplements that you recommend, and I have changed my eating habits. I sleep at night now. I only eat nutritionally dense foods, with intermittent fasting. You have brought my life back.
    I am eternally thankful.

Post chemo it is typical to have painful dry vaginal issues so I purchased suppositories with Dhea. I didn’t use them every day but the morning before or night before for about 6 months. Made a big difference. Use them on and off now, if I “feel” like I need them.

I used Carlson Key-E suppositories and rolled them in the Dhea powder from the Life Extension Dhea capsules. I wanted as few chemicals as possible as I am sensitive. The lubrication from the suppository was just as beneficial as the Dhea, I believe. Given the sensitivity of those tissues, I wanted to err on the side of less is more with the Dhea. I do have to use a glycerin based lubricant each time but that wasn’t even helping prior to using the Dhea and suppository so I know it made a difference. It took about 3 -4 months

I'm quitting coffee due to anxiety and gut health and as all the research I've found is that it also drops levels of dhea and testosterone and estrogen in women. Nooooobody is talking about this because everyone is addicted. Coffee is not healthy for women it is a stimulant drug. It also blocks absorption to minerals. I would drink alot of coffee and take other supplements that it was supposedly blocking or interfering with.. coffee also causes more androgen due to acne in some.. ive seen both. But if you have hormonal and gut problems take bone broth and quit coffee.

    This is super good timing.
About 10 years ago I would go several months without a period and then I would gush for an entire month.
It led to me being anemic and just no energy so my gynecologist put me on norethindrone. The doc said I had too much estrogen in my body. It worked wonderfully though I hate taking medication. 🤪
I've been taking it for a very long time close to 10 years if not more and my periods have dwindled down to about two days long.
Due to C19 , new rules and scheduling conflicts I've been off it for a month.
    My period's completely stopped!!
I'm freaking giddy!! I am in my crone phase FINALLY!!
I think the medicine was prolonging my periods.
So I think I might get me some DHEA which I had taken in the past and had really good results with it but there for a little bit it was hard to find. 🤷
    thanks for the info!!

How much did you take. You have to start really low and slow If you start too high you can really cause problems. I started with 5mg. Then I moved up to ten. Women should not take more than 30mg or you run the risk of health issues you do not want.

First of all, Dr. Berg, thank you so much for all your help. I tried DHEA 25mg for eight months last year, but after six months, I started with some issues related to my periods. I experienced cramps, heavy periods, prolonged periods, but I was feeling much more energetic during the period I was taking the DHEA supplement. Nowadays, I can't take DHEA for more than a week without having my period starting again. I lost weight during my DHEA use, and I would like to try it again, but I am afraid of messing with my hormones doing that.

Hi there. Have you tried micronized DHEA at 5-10 mg doses instead? 25 is quite high for many women and sounds like it might have raised your estrogen too much. That happened to me. I now use 10 mg micronized DHEA which I get off of IHerb. I also use it every other day and find that this has helped me. Another thing to possibly try is sublingual pregnenolone. The grandmother of them all. I take 5 mg sublingually three times a week on opposite days of the DHEA. The combo was recommended by an MD/ Functional Medicine Dr here in Europe a year ago ( I am originally from the states where it’s easier to get them over the counter. Now I order online instead of paying the Dr’s exorbitant fees ) Hope this helps a bit. Best wishes xx ☺️🙏

Thanks Dr. Berg. I just want to ask, if taking 10 mg of DHEA and hair loss occurs, what would you attribute that to? I had taken this dose in 2018 and lost 40 lbs, felt and looked better than ever, and my depression and anxiety melted away. I was like a new person. That said, as fast as I’d lost weight, I also started losing hair; the other medication I’d started at the same time was LDN (hypothyroid/hashimotos). I was also taking DIM for symptoms of excess estrogen. In any case I stopped both the DHEA and LDN, and the hair loss stopped within three months. So; would you recommend I try DHEA again, given I am now almost 52, and when I took it first I was 46? I have also recently restarted DIM for perimenopause symptoms, while I wait to see a gynaecologist. Thank-you.

My question is I'm doing an 18/6 IF is it okay to take dhea at 16 hours of fasting? Insulin levels drop and your glycogen stores ares depleted which help breakdown fat for energy. I'm may be over 181 lbs 5'2 . I've also noticed I can fast longer. Any reports you share with us? Thanks you helping me understand my body.
