Slye Fox Even better: Let the sensor detect a player. As soon as he gets close... Boom. Even though small warheads don't do much damage to large blocks...
I tried something similar, but they were only designed to cut so far into the ship before detonating a large yield inside of it. Managed to completely gut a cruiser-sized vessel with only two of them.
Ooooooh that's mean. I like it! But if these were large ships or modded small ones you could have a Gatling turret on the back of it shooting everything and everyone. Then have a warhead buried inside if they try to blow it up it makes a bigger boom then they bargained for.
Patrick Vaughan I would personally use a sensor at the front, sides and the top and bottom and have a lot of them set in one direction towards an enemy base so that most of them detect ships and make it head towards it with grinders or warheads in
IDEA: Add warheads inside the grinding drones, and use timer blocks to set them off. So maybe after they grinded inside a ship, they'll explode, causing even more havoc.
+Mateus Deathbringer Design it to blow if or when its tampered with, say when drill stops, caboom! Also with that feature it could collect the stuff so it does not cause much lag, but when destroyed the block releases all the debris and cause huge lag with explosions, causing issues for any other player who survived from original blast. In that time the person whos drones these are would had time to go away, chance his ship to something like battle cruiser and come back finish them off when lag is gone. I dont know much from this games mechanics, so just random thoughts trown into air! :D
You could also have a warhead, people inside and the drill, so in capital ship ware fare, you can deploy teams into the ship, and manually place bombs everywhere, so the person who is fighting you will either have to disengage you, or now worry about the ALLAH HU AKBAR guys inside.
You could try the same thing, but convert all of the sensors to detect asteroids and also put drills on them instead for little miners. Also, since the grinders would be spitting a debris field of resources out their bums, why not collect it for yourself with the collector drone I suggested on a previous video? Basically, the drone has a spherical gravity generator at it's core and is surrounded by collectors so that it gathers your goodies for you! I originally suggested this so it could follow you or your other mining drones to collect stray ore, but it would work great for this as well! Granted, that would be for if you wanted to stick around and steal their stuff instead of just leaving them a nasty present to find, but it would give you the option! I implore you to try it out!
YO I used that idea for one of my ships! I had 2 sphere gens on opposite and it would collect debris around me like a force field, great against rockets and turrets love to shoot the junk first!
what about a drop-pod version of this? it cuts into a ship until it gets into a open area in it and then opens a door to let people inside of it get out that'd be a very effective way of raiding a enemy ship or space station, causing damage and releasing enemy shock troops upon them.
Try to make a ship with some kind of "mouth". A large ship with a large hole in the front. The point of the ship is to get near an enemy ship and capture it. Inside of the mouth will be a bunch of grinders to completely destroy an enemies ship.
Thank you for kind of answering my hypothetical question I posted back on your "Lock On Missiles, Sensor Guided Ordnance Concept" it even has the connector... although I suggested an ejector. Now that I think about it, I just realized that the grinder would pick up the bigger pieces and not be able to throw them out of the ejector, and adding the landing pads was a great idea to keep the grinders from being destroyed. You did a great job with them and I will definitely try to use these.
To make these more effective, set up the timer block on these things to activate a warhead. Once they've buried themselves a little way into the hull, they detonate for maximum damage. The small warheads likely won't completely destroy the ship, even with a chain reaction of detonations but the damage should cause havoc to internal systems like generators, gyroscopes, medical bays and the bridge as well as softening the ship up for follow-up attacks by fighters and heavier frigates or battleships. I feel like turrets would easily take these apart, however.
Turrets tearing these up can be fixed by adding some heavily armored decoy blocks to the sides to eat up the damage. Preferably ones that can be released prior to hitting the target so they don't prevent burrowing. Can perhaps even skip most of the armor if you can make the pod rotate on it's forward axis while it approaches the target.
raggedsolution21 and replace two of the landing legs with thrustrs and up thrusters un the back to melt through light armor and components snd the grinder to take care of heavy armor!
also imagine them grinding through heavy armor. for huge battleships even multi layer heavy armor. they wont do much before you disable them. very situational weapon.
I had created a few similar ships, except instead of using grinders, it used pistons that would push engines into the ship, melting straight through with incredible speed. These were of the large ship class, but relatively small. The largest of which, is a fully functional carrier that would launch troops out the front into the large hole that would be bored into the enemy ship in a matter of seconds.
New to this game, my favourites are weapons like these and the claw! Real raider type stuff! I had an idea involving that chain you made once, but it'd detatch from your ship and latch onto theirs, preferably wrapping and connecting at both ends, strapped with grinders or warheads or whatever. Pirates and Reavers represent!
+SgRampage1 One problem I see with the timer would be the inconsistancies of the blocks and what routes that they would follow, but still, not a bad idea. We just have one little setback.
Well you would have to set the timer according to how heavily armored the target is to give time for the torpedo to chew through the armor for maximum damage.
Just slap a sensor on the back of the drone that detects a wide but short area around itself. The moment the armor of the ship passes in front of it, the warhead blows up.
A good idea would be to add explosives to the inside, so that when a player starts to disable the drills, you can detonate them, denying the resources from the drills, and destroying even more of the ship.
You have a devious imagination, I love it. Imagine dozens of these things swarming around, you could deny an entire area cause no one would want termites on their ship.
A went onto a random survival server, built two of these, one with drills, one with grinders, and dropped them off next to a asteroid base. i put the drill one outside of the base, and the grinder one inside the hangar. when i came back there was no base left and the drill drone was gone. (possibly because the grinder drone ground it up)
i'm know i late to this party, but i've devised a much more effective version - a bloatfly drone, winch is a big grid grinder on a piston attached to a drone core with 4 landing gears, it's hard to get onto a ship but if you're a good pilot you can basically penetrate through the entire ship.
I recently built a missile that can be launched from earth and can be remotely guided toward any target in space. It has a range of 50000m and 25 deployable decoys to prevent it from being shot down.
bandzajus I bought it ASAP after some of his vids and it was definetly worth it! I can only recommend it as one of my favorite games of all time :D It's not as complex as it seems, mostly it's pretty easy especially once you get used to it. But the gameplay elements are highly complex, the programmers (Keen Software I believe) really put lots of work into this and did a more than amazing job! There is some really advanced stuff in the game too so you can make the most complex things you could ever imagine though if you ever felt like it, pretty much like Ian above me stated ;)
If u put shields on those with a mod. They could withstand fire from turrets until they are inside the ship. Leaving only the players as last defense in most cases.

Dude, you are like some sort of war master with some of these. By themselves, the ideas may be fallible, but in the chaos of battle, these could be rather effective, given the circumstances align properly.
I had a similar idea a while back, but mine was much more basic. Using large ship parts, I used a small thruster, one small reactor, and a grinder. The basic idea was to launch several like missiles at an enemy ship and see what happens. They were quite effective but I am a bit more proud of another variant in which I placed a drill on the front. It works quite well for ships but it is amazing for drilling small astronaut sized holes in asteroids.
I honestly feel like the glaring weakness of it is that it'd be powerless if I cut away that one thruster that pushes it forward... It'd just cut 1 block and float there... Could be mean if turned upon a small ship tho.
I was on a multiplayer server and i had a small ship grinder with a camera, controller, reactor, and gyro and it could all fit in one block. I invested in some antennas with an amazing range and i would float around is space, and when i saw a ship, i would grind in it, hopefully not alerting the player, eat all of the non vital parts of the ship, then slowly start taking out gyros and thrusters, then eventually reactors. I literally had a player with nothing left but a seat, 1 thruster, the front view of the seat, and a gyro and reactor. He didn't notice for 5 mins!
YOU HAVE TO HAVE AN ALL OUT WAR WITH LIKE 12 PEOPLE AND USE ALL YOUR PREVIOUS DESIGNS THE TURRETS THE TORPEDOES THE GRAVITY SHIELDS THE DROP PODS ALL THE GOOD STUFF! PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE THIS WOULD MAKE FOR THE BEST VIDEO EVAR
little hint: you can minimize the damage to your ship by taking the "activate drill" into a timer block on the drone, activating after a few seconds still, can you develop a faster weapon? once these things are locked on, a single missile turret could take out 10 or more, even if they where at maximum speed, so it'd be good to install some kind of anti-turret maneuver, using timer blocks, for exemple (the engines a-d all are on maximum thrust overwrite): tb1 activates tb2 and side engine a, while disabling side engine c (the opposing engine), tb2 runs down and when triggered, it activates tb3 and side engine b (b's opposing one), when tb3 triggers, it deactivates side engine a, activates side engine c and tb4, tb4 triggers and deactivates side engine b, activates side engine d and tb1. this would make the drone move in an evasive maneuver to at least fool incontrolled turrets. with equal timing among the timer blocks, it would not move from it's normal course in total or change its direction, but evade missiles far away. and the recources for that shouldn't be too much
5 years to late but like everyone else is saying add a warhead, however what if you did the same thing with a decoy with or without a warhead surrounded by a few heavy armour then any turrets would shoot through its own ship to hit the decoy then blow from the warhead, love this idea of grinding drones
These would be super handy to attach to small fast ships that can deploy them as a sort of swarm tactic. If you had a fleet of like 10-20 of these you could drop em off at several different targets and just cripple them
I've been experimenting with a gravity harpoon concept. That is a seeker drone loaded with mass blocks and a ship or station with a bunch of sphereical gravity generators. Doesn't work so well with large ships like Big Red, but on a smaller scale it can be very effective. The only downsides are 1) that smaller ships tend to be fast and hard to catch and 2) if you get a lock, you now have a ship hurtling towards your ship/base. Maybe best when used in conjunction with a grinder array and/or battery of missile turrets? :/
I like the idea of a player realising and not being able to turn their ship until the drones have been ground down, if they don't realise then they will end up with loads of debris inside the ship
seems like it would be good to have a warhead on a time block so that when the mole enters the ship it would detonate creating a much larger area of damage compared to just a warhead penetrating the surface. This would also be a nice improvement because it would negate the process of someone eventually destroying the moles and if the timer was long enough might even kill someone trying to take out the mole. If you wanted to get fancy with this idea you could put a remote and camera block on the mole so that it could be manually detonated for maximum effect.
I'd call them remoras since they stick to a ship like a suckerfish on the belly of a shark. Could probably put a couple little jumpseats on a variant and dig a nice hole for small infiltration teams to wreak additional havoc. Just imagine a bunch of these little guys painted all black and popped up into the underside of your ship it's normally a pretty big blind spot especially on a catapult carrier or a ship with limited underside visibility
With debris coming out of top you you also use gravity generators on drop off ship to collect and then shot gun debris or a little collector gravity bin at back of torpedo lined with explosives so once enough debris breaks inner lining of torpedo boom sending it flying.
Yes!!!!! I’ve had this idea for real life for sooooooo long. Imagine warfare taking this direction. Or battlebots using something like this. Would ramp up the sci-fi of everything.
What would make this complete is a "Return home" function for automated ships. On signal they would just fly to say the position of a beacon. So you drop off the drones at an enemy ship, then they return to your ship with all the stuff that has been ground away.
since those things actually lock onto ships and if they miss find their way back, imagine releasing like 50 of those in a battle to just swarm a ship and tear it to shreds.
Another possibility. Lets say you want to decomission a ship and grind it down but no grind pit in the area. Then a ship like this can be useful, drop dozens of those small grinders and spit out. Use your large ship with spherical grav gen to pic up all the stuff and store it inside the big drone carrier. This way you can also retrieve drones by making them stop (if using an antenna)
you could add a a piston to push the grinder forward with a sensor block and instead of the claws grabbing the stuff have them detach as cannon fodder maybe have a small cockpit on the back for the player to jump out of to get into the ship or for the smaller ones aim them at engines and power points to stop the ship
I combined it with a Small Torpedos and it has a Devastating Effect on a Enemy ship and one of my Torpedo Grinders Destroyed a Ship with one good strike destroying the 3 Reactors on the enemy ship
Gosh, I've had this idea for a long long time, and only recently have I built up the will to begin doing it... And you beat me to it. My hat comes off to you sir! :3
You don't always have to grind her hard, in fact sometimes that's not right, to do. Sometimes you have to scale down your sliders. And fucking turn off your dampeners too.
imagine letting a swarm of those out against an enemy construction area kilometers away and just destroying all of the ships in production. it could turn the tide of a war in minutes, especially if timed bombs within to detonate the remains and scatter the collected resources
Riddle me this, Could you in theory have a printing facility in one of those carrier like ships and use that to build this drones constantly dropping potentially even hundreds of those crafts onto the enemy fleets?
I built 50 of these and made a huge ship for all of them, (I also modified them alot), well I used it on my strongest enemy who was alot stronger then most of my enemies and guess what happened, he started to try to shoot me out of the sky so I called back up and got those drills on and mainly I destroyed his main life source, we then made peace and he got some ships and we all lived nicely, I have no more enemy's also. So thanks for helping me end all my wars and have a awesome trading system and a one combined faction (: We have been attacked but all have failed
Brilliant! Certainly a design that can be scaled and adapted. I'm curious if you could rig up a double landing gear system, with the torpedoes magnetically attached to a shield with auxiliary thrusters, power, and landing gear. May provide some shielding against missiles in more hostile encounters. I'm sure the design could be set up so they could cut through their own shields once attached.
it seems like the main counter would be that you would have to launch a fighter to surgically remove them. this would be really strong paired with a small battleship that could disable turrets and fighters and then finish them with this because over time this can do huge damage to even massive ships
Yeah it looks cool, but i think something that cuts armor with the grinder and then a timer detonates a warhead inside would be more useful.
if only buttons could be pressed by them hitting a block, then you'd only need a button on the front instead of a grinder to just blow on impact
Kevin Code
You can use a sensor to detect the ship & then detonate the mine.
Just imagine how destructive i will be on worlds with sped up grinding speed to like 5x
Slye Fox Even better: Let the sensor detect a player. As soon as he gets close... Boom.

that's cool!
you mean GBU-57A/B Massive Ordnance Penetrator (MOP) "bunker buster" style bomb (penetrate in target then explode)? well thats pretty op.
So you just created a bomb that is like a bunker buster but more powerful I am guessing or more chotic
Might be a good idea to put some interior turrets on those torpedos. That'll be a nasty surprise for any player trying to stop them.
Holy shit
Cool idea but wouldn't it be impossible to load them unless you do it manually?
Put them on the interior, so when the player cuts away the saws. They get greeted with gunfire.

I can trust you to come up with the coolest and most interesting ideas how to weaponize stuff in SE. Good work as always!
Blueprints pls ^-^
These things are diabolical...
Cut through the hull and expose the enemy to the cold vacuum of space.
Good job!
Can you post this on the workshop?
I was on a multiplayer server and i had a small ship grinder with a camera, controller, reactor, and gyro and it could all fit in one block. I invested in some antennas with an amazing range and i would float around is space, and when i saw a ship, i would grind in it, hopefully not alerting the player, eat all of the non vital parts of the ship, then slowly start taking out gyros and thrusters, then eventually reactors. I literally had a player with nothing left but a seat, 1 thruster, the front view of the seat, and a gyro and reactor. He didn't notice for 5 mins!
How do you "lock in" your ship with your landing gears, when you hit a surface?
Autolock mode.
Knsgf I didn't ask what it was called, I asked how to do it, like, which button to press?
Markowich Open the Control Panel and select the Landing Gear. There will be a check box named "Autolock"; tick it.
Knsgf Alright, thx :)
Alternately you could manually press P when you are close enough.
Unbelievable. That's the most interesting way of destroying a ship in Space Engineers I've ever seen.
Imagine you and your friends attacking an big ship and the enemy ship is launching those pods at you at shredding your ship
potential troll weapon
This has made me totally rethink making a ram ship as these seem far more useful and expendable
Reminds of Homeworld 2. Which reminds me, it gave me a lot of ideas. Nice job.
You know, I don't find a lot of your special weapon designs to be practical in a survival war, but I see the potential for these things to be nasty...
Have a fleet of 10-20 of those green ships attack a gigantic ship
And if the ship was pressurized these would be lethal.
little hint: you can minimize the damage to your ship by taking the "activate drill" into a timer block on the drone, activating after a few seconds
still, can you develop a faster weapon? once these things are locked on, a single missile turret could take out 10 or more, even if they where at maximum speed, so it'd be good to install some kind of anti-turret maneuver, using timer blocks, for exemple (the engines a-d all are on maximum thrust overwrite):
tb1 activates tb2 and side engine a, while disabling side engine c (the opposing engine), tb2 runs down and when triggered, it activates tb3 and side engine b (b's opposing one), when tb3 triggers, it deactivates side engine a, activates side engine c and tb4, tb4 triggers and deactivates side engine b, activates side engine d and tb1.
this would make the drone move in an evasive maneuver to at least fool incontrolled turrets. with equal timing among the timer blocks, it would not move from it's normal course in total or change its direction, but evade missiles far away. and the recources for that shouldn't be too much
I liked how when the torpedo cut through it still kept going so it pushed the ship down
5 years to late but like everyone else is saying add a warhead, however what if you did the same thing with a decoy with or without a warhead surrounded by a few heavy armour then any turrets would shoot through its own ship to hit the decoy then blow from the warhead, love this idea of grinding drones
These would be super handy to attach to small fast ships that can deploy them as a sort of swarm tactic. If you had a fleet of like 10-20 of these you could drop em off at several different targets and just cripple them
This is such a wonderful idea. I cannot fully express how much I envy you coming up with it.
You should add a playlist of supermassive version of all your creations, especially ones like these! :D so AWESOME and satisfying to watch!! :D
seems like it would be good to have a warhead on a time block so that when the mole enters the ship it would detonate creating a much larger area of damage compared to just a warhead penetrating the surface.
With debris coming out of top you you also use gravity generators on drop off ship to collect and then shot gun debris or a little collector gravity bin at back of torpedo lined with explosives so once enough debris breaks inner lining of torpedo boom sending it flying.
ah yes kinda like the IRA's clip and fuze wire timer
Yes!!!!! I’ve had this idea for real life for sooooooo long. Imagine warfare taking this direction. Or battlebots using something like this. Would ramp up the sci-fi of everything.
Some one needs to make this ship into a one-block mod that spawns in swarms as a random encounter.
When you make drones add one neutral gyroscope to it. I've found that it stabilizes the drone so it doesn't spin out of control.
love teh swarm effect of swinign around for another bite of the ship on those grinder drones though ^^
What would make this complete is a "Return home" function for automated ships. On signal they would just fly to say the position of a beacon. So you drop off the drones at an enemy ship, then they return to your ship with all the stuff that has been ground away.
Never, EVER, let Tazoo get these. Ever. At any time.
since those things actually lock onto ships and if they miss find their way back, imagine releasing like 50 of those in a battle to just swarm a ship and tear it to shreds.
Holy shiet you gave me nightmares
Another possibility. Lets say you want to decomission a ship and grind it down but no grind pit in the area. Then a ship like this can be useful, drop dozens of those small grinders and spit out. Use your large ship with spherical grav gen to pic up all the stuff and store it inside the big drone carrier. This way you can also retrieve drones by making them stop (if using an antenna)
probably one of the trolliest ways to decimate a ship. I LOVE IT
you could add a a piston to push the grinder forward with a sensor block and instead of the claws grabbing the stuff have them detach as cannon fodder maybe have a small cockpit on the back for the player to jump out of to get into the ship or for the smaller ones aim them at engines and power points to stop the ship
Use this concept with pistons and make the grinder slowly enter the ship when the torpedo makes contact, you can use sensors to make this happen.
Kinky
XD
A larger variation using up to maybe four drills to make things go somewhat faster would look pretty cool.
