Movies from the 80's and 90's were made with some kind of magic that will never be captured again.
Absolutely
They used film.
Right on! Proper movies with real actors and proper stunts, none of this modern "cgi" crap...
Yep. And the yellow-orange filter. funny how we really don't notice that until compared with real life. The Matrix had a green filter all the way through.
yeah .. everything is done on Green screen and all CGI ..
He deserved an Oscar for his performance in this movie.
Agreed
Definitely
Yes! In a world where Oscars are given for quality performances.
@@KutWrite I'm in the UK so don't hear much about him in our press over here nowadays, do you know if he's spoken out against this Great Reset that's being pushed on us citizens around the world? There seems to be very few, Arnold Schwarzenegger for example told us to stuff our freedom recently, he's obviously on board with it then
Oh yeah
Falling Down was decades ahead of it's time. Fits in perfectly to today's crazed world.
As an LA native, this movie captures the atmosphere of the city in such an accurate yet surreal/ visceral way... It's difficult to describe and almost uncanny to watch. Great video breaking these locations down!
Thank you
Are there still nagging assholes walking around asking for money while coming up with a miriad of easily disproved stories about how they are not employed ? As a Ukranian I found that scene to be insanely funny. The guy is so see-through, so hard to believe such morons actually exist. Sure, we've got bums of our own over here, but not one of them is, I think, drugged-up enough to actually believe anyone will believe their bull.
@@viewtiful1doubleokamihand253 Oh it's way worse now Lol Homeless are rampant in LA + all of Cali's major cities. I mean, they won't always give you a sob story like the dude in the movie, but they'll definitely ask you for cash
@@dante340 Jeez, so that one South Park episode wasn't even a joke, huh ? :o
@@dante340 yeah you can see the tents everywhere in this video
The older I get, the more I can relate, to the character of D-Fense
"I'm the bad guy?"
D-FENS
Very true
I can't picture anyone else other than Michael Douglas in this movie. One of my favorite movies
His best performance.
He did a great job in this movie. But l also can see Clint Eastwood or the Sheen men doing this as well!
It's Michael Douglas's favourite movie and role too.
Watched it only recently. Excellent movie
robin williams could have pulled this role off. think: 1 hour photo
Hands down best filming location narrations. The attention to nuance around architecture, paintings, and other item placement, along with the camera angles is superb.
Wow, thank you so much!!!
Totally agree, fantastic work.
I've gotta be honest bro, that opening scene when he's stuck in the traffic jam is pretty much how I feel every day. I've reached my breaking point...!
I feel ya’
Anyone tryna have a group trip to Venice?
I HEAR YOU! Every day I am defending myself (PHYSICALLY) from road ragers, people riding my ass inches away and just moronic people who apparently learned to drive playing Mario Kart. I've stooped to buy a vinyl decal for my back window with Yosemite Sam that says BACK OFF but it does no good....
@@gobshite5150 reading you loud and clear brother!!!
Go back to Sweden then
I think the fact that this film is pretty much shot entirely on-location is remarkable. Even up to using the actual buildings' interiors that are right there. No movie magic junk for the most part, shot directly on-location throughout LA like a long stroll. Makes it realistic and gives me vibes of old 1940s-50s era Italian neorealist cinema. This is an excellent video, man. Thanks so much for it.
Thank you, I appreciate it.
Surprising how man of the buildings have been torn down or completely altered in the last 30 years. LA was so cool to me as a kid growing up in rural England, I finally visited for the first time in 2022 and whilst I still loved it, I was surprised at how many issues (homelessness especially) there are
Three things as someone born, raised, and currently residing in Los Angeles.
1) It's always changing here. The population is transitory with new people always coming and going. Old buildings and homes are torn down and newer ones are built in their place.
2) The Los Angeles of the 1980s and early 90s (when this movie was made)was so much worse than it is today. Things were run down. Smog was awful. Crime was off the charts. Parts of 'Falling Down' were filmed in areas no sane person would set foot;gang ridden, crime infested, shitholes. Now those same neighborhoods are completely transformed.
3) Don't think of those people as homeless. What the majority of them actually are is drug tourists. They migrate to Los Angeles because drugs are decriminalized here. Drugs are easily available, very high quality, and dirt cheap compared to most of the country. Throw in perfect weather and now it's a Mecca for every loser that wants to waste their life sticking a needle in their arm.
@@mjwbulich thanks dude. I've watched a few of these film location videos now and in every one of them around 50% of the buildings have been torn down. And yep, it was pretty evident that those guys in the tent areas were on something
This is one of my favorite movies. Saw it in the theater when it came out. Crazy to see how much those various locations have changed in 30 years.
Crazy that it's been that long
And for those who don't know, "Sheila" from Whammy Burger is Michelle Pfeiffer's younger sister!
That's Miss. Folson to you!! Lol..
i know she was in vamp. and also worked with me at the hollywood tropicana. she was a waitress.
Yep. her name is Deedee.
Kinda looks like the Mad About You lady
Man the locations look so sterile and soulless now. Can't believe the early 90s looks so nostalgic now. I remember thinking how boring it was becoming compared to the 80s but it really wasn't bad at all!!
I'm afraid that's just "movie magic" whatsoever. Any filming location I visited in person felt sterile and soulless, even if they were filmed a few years prior to that.
@@Retfie719 Some of it might be movie magic, but they removed the playground at the park for crying out loud. Things have changed, for the worse in a lot of ways.
Early 90s LA is definitely not something you should be "nostalgia" for. lol
@@agoo7581 mainly the cars.
@@Bigtymer781 They still have homeless junkies walking about so there's that.
I ate at that El Pollo Locco in Hollywood so many times.
You are lucky.
Fun fact: In spanish "El Pollo Locco" translates to "El Pollo Crazy"
@@niles6159 I guess that’s all we get for free, huh?
a little side note. Falling Down had to wait several months to film in some locations due to the 1992 Rodney King riot. Especially, the location on Broadway and 112th Street in South Central (the area was heavily damaged in the riot) where he blew up to construction sight with his Anti Rocket Launcher.
Love this trivia!
Yup that's the heart of the 112 Broadway Gangster Crips gang.
Yep. Remember an interview Douglas gave about WB being worried since that King thing had just happened. I was in college at that time in San Diego while the mob mentality was burning their own city down.
A masterpiece
Great job. I am a photographer out of LA and OC. I have shot celebrity homes and met a few celebrities and it's really cool but what gets me most excited are the filming locations from various movies. Most of my friends don't get it but I bet you do.
Side note, I have an incredible shot of a forked lightning bolt striking the Pacific Palms Resort. Shot from Vantage Pointe Dr in Hacienda or Rowland Heights (Right off of harbor/fullerton)
Thank you so much for making this video! "Falling Down" is one of my all time time favorite movies. I first saw it in 1993 when I was still in Army training for AIT (Advanced Individual Training) on movie night. Our company bought out an entire movie theater so it was just us for one night and we watched 2 movies for 4 hours and got to eat whatever junk food we wanted. The first movie was "Dennis the Menace" and I hated it. Sorry, I just didn't like it but it was the first time I seen a movie in months or had seen anything from the outside world because that's how military training is in the beginning for recruits. The second movie of that night was "Falling Down" and I absolutely loved it! Michael Douglas was AMAZING! I loved the idea that after the cold war ended that this dude down on his luck just snapped after getting laid off and did all the things we've all thought of doing to terrible and annoying people which was hilarious! The only thing that didn't sit well was the domestic violence part of this movie, however I am glad they included that because that's what happens when times get tough. We're seeing this again now because of the pandemic so this movie is so relatable even for younger audiences who weren't even born when it came out because of it. There is no shame in laughing at some of the things that D-FENS does. All of us have a dark side to ourselves and it's okay to laugh at it and it doesn't make you a bad person. What separates good and bad people is acting on those dark emotions which thankfully most of us don't.
So if you never saw this movie, I highly recommend it. It's one of the best movies of all time!
And thank you 80s Life for bringing us to all those places from the movie. I was a bit sad to see that some were gone. I'm from NJ and I had made a bunch of videos of a lot of the famous places from "The Sopranos" that I never uploaded to UA-cam. I did it to share with my friends I played with on World of Warcraft who were also fans of the show back then and this was like early 2000's. These videos are a lot of fun to make. I should have uploaded them lol
My pleasure. Thank you!! And you still should upload them. There is still plenty of interest in that show.
We can't thank you enough for your work !
Thank you!
Great work. Thanks for that effort. Brings back memories.
Thank you so much for this! I was in LA when this movie was filmed and it has always been one of the films I watch over and over.
Nice job, great attention to detail - thank you!
Thanks for this video. Just watched this movie for the first time and absolutely loved how it made LA look & feel back in the early 90’s. Your commentary is also very welcomed. Looking forward to more videos like this!
Detailed, intelligent narration. Thanks man, good job putting this together. 👏
One of my favorite movies. Thanks again for another great video.
I always found it hilarious that he basically risked his life to _not_ give the briefcase to the gangsters, but ends up giving it to the homeless guy because he was irritating him, lol. And the fact that nothing was in it but his lunch makes you realize how crazy D-FENS really is. Great movie! Awesome filming locations video!
Do you not consider that the briefcase actually represents D-FENS? Outwardly giving an impression of purpose and respectability.... but inwardly it has, through no fault of its own, been stripped of its former usefulness and is now an empty hollow shell bereft of meaning.
Thank YOU for a great video!!!
Amazing!
Thanks for doing this :)
Awesome background music! Thanks for all these great scenes.

No, thank YOU as always. I really appreciate it.
The hamburger stand I ate at about 20 years ago and the food was good. That freeway near the end is the 105, it wasn't complete yet but some movies and music videos were filmed on it while during construction. Lethal Weapon 2, Speed, and a Billy Idol video can't remember the name...
Yeah it’s called Angelos Burgers...I found a damn fly in my soda once and never went back lol
I miss the 90s. Thanks for that video.
