Also, black ppls hair grows at THE SAME RATE of other races of women which is appropriate 1/4-1/2in per month. I am literally in school right now studying African American hair & currently working on an all-encompassing natural hair ebook because of this. The ONLY issue is that we are terrible at length retention--which comes down to proper hair care/maintenance. We do not prioritize DAILY moisture (water) and light manipulation so our hair is breaking @ the same rate of growth. Wearing wigs, braids are OK for temporary styles but to see our maximum growth potential, we need to be getting water into our hair daily, if not 3x/wk. I’ve been testing daily co-washing or co-washing every 2 days on my hair since the winter & the growth & moisture retention has been crazy….It’s the lack of knowledge that causes us to hate our hair.

I love my 4b/4c hair!! I think a huge part of why so many people hate their hair or find it difficult is because people just say that soo often. And most people pick that up as kids when they didn't even think about it much they hear other people saying it and start to believe it themselves. I think people stopped saying that it's difficult or not as pretty then less people would feel that way yk? It'd be nice to start trends of people being excited to do their natural hair when having like a spa day and doing self care!
So many people hate wash day as it's so time consuming but it benefits our hair's health! and we don't see things like taking nice salt baths, doing face masks, and painting our nails as time consuming and tiresome. There are ways we can have peaceful moments and romanticize doing our hair!
I so agree! We have to be careful of our language about our own hair . Change the mindset first and that makes easier . When I did and except what my hair will do and won’t it become better . I learned to listen to it and go about my business 😂.
I have been natural for almost 9 years now. I have cut my hair many times and my hair grows quickly. My hair definitely would've been down my back if I hadn't cut it. We can grow our hair if we want. Of course, some deal with hair problems, and we cannot help that, but we can grow our hair. I dislike people who act like black hair cannot grow. It grows when we take care of it. I agree. When I was a little girl, I had 3b/3c hair. My mom used to braid my hair until I was able to take care of it on my own. As a teenager, I used to blow my hair out every two to three months. Moving on to my young adult age, I used to dye my hair every 6 months, wash it every week and wear it straight all the time. Then I decided to go natural 8 years ago, discovered I had now 3c/4a/ hair. Through it all, I regularly trim it, cut it, big chop it, you name it. My hair always grow back. Always.
There have been many times where BW have done this across all social media platforms throughout the years. Proof means nothing to people who are full of self hate; their issue is psychological.

But were they actually measuring growth or length retention? Because those things are not the same thing. I think we can say that straighter hair types have an easier time retaining length, but there are too many YT videos showing how black women went from chin length hair to waist and tailbone length hair in 4-6 years. Which seems pretty darn fast to me 😁

relaxers proved our hair grew just fine because we'd go get touch ups every 8 weeks or so when we got new growth so obviously our hair grows but breakage can happened when we don't take care of our hair properly i think retaining length is more of the problem
“Natural” hair needs very few products. 3 to be exact: shampoo, conditioner and a leave in moisturizer. Low self esteem has black women chasing the wind consuming over priced hair products.
I wish more women with 4c hair would wear it naturally. I love seeing short 4c Afros . This obsession curls, shiny, wet, or super defined hair is ridiculous. Your natural 4C hair is unique and just as elegant and fancy as any other hair texture. It really breaks my heart that so many Black women are uncomfortable with their hair in its natural state.

There is nothing more beautiful than a twist out on natural 4c hair. Our hair is the only hair type that is specific to to those of us with African genes and we should be proud. No other race has our hair and can do the things that we can do with our hair. Unfortunately, we have been brainwashed to hate our hair. We just need to understand how to properly care for our hair.

My hair was to my waist before I cut it when I mini's hair got to her waist. Its now to her butt and shes 7. The main thing to do is listen to your hair and know not everything is going to work for your specific hair. We both have 4b/c hair. I use different products for us because her hair reacts differently than mine. We are both low porosity, high density hair but this is where you listen. If it is dry sticky dull looking it doesnt like what you are doing. If you notice your hair has more tangles when you take out protective styles, you may need to do styles more often, (my mini) for me, when I leave it alone, it grows like a weed. No brushing when dry unless you straighen it. Make sure you use heat protection. It takes work, but if you take care of it, you can do pretty much anything with it. 💞
I had a Laotian friend and her hair never grew and mine had always been long and i am 100%. Black. I dont care what you google or what a doctor says everyone's bodies are different. I will never accept anything different. And my hair is loved and wanted by most people Black and wyt

Even if it did statistically grow 0.2 inches a month on average compared to a white woman’s 0.5, 0.2 is still more than 0.2. It may take longer for us to grow out her but so what? (My statement is for the lady in the video)
Right, I agree. On average, mine grows 1 inch per month. Give or take a half of an inch depending on the season and time of year, I wish folks would mention how hair growth can even be seasonal. My hair growth slows down a bit in the fall and winter, but grows like weeds during the spring and summer.
I have 4c hair. I feel like a clown when I wear hair that does not look like it is coming from my scalp. Even if you do like your hair looking longer, there are hair extensions that look like our natural hair and look amazing.....

How funny that it is said that our hair type 4 c is very fragile, because at school the children who had type 1 and 2 always said, you have weave, braids, straight hair, and all kinds of things, and still do you have hair on your head? I found it interesting too when I learnt 4c hair is fragile because I’ve always had a thick dry hair, but now it makes complete sense! Considering how coily our hair structure is, it has many points to break. That makes it fragile.
I have a fire taper cut and just keeping my hair shaped has played a huge roll in how much I love it. Regardless if I have super defined coils or a 4 day old frizzy Afro, the shape is key to me loving my style. It’s so much more expensive to keep my hair cut vs when I wore it long. My short fro accents my features and the cut really compliments my face shape and natural beauty.
I think you had a very balanced view on this, compared to some of the others videos I’ve seen on this topic. I’ve been natural for over 10 years, but we have to be honest about our hair. It typically does not grow as fast as other races, and genetics play a big factor in some black women with long hair. Some people have the simplest routine and their hair can grow long, but others need more TLC throughout the week to keep their hair moisturized. I can’t even wear box braids anymore, because they snatch all of my edges, even though I love braids. 😩 It’s simply not a one-size-fits all when it comes to natural hair, which is why some black women do not have the patience for wearing their natural hair, and that’s okay if they choose not to. I just get sick of seeing all of these extra fake wigs and laces that don’t match skin tones. 😩😂
Been natural for 15 years and I'll be the first to say it's tough as a woman to accept that you just won't be complimented as much with it. You have to be mentally ready to choose the health of your hair over social validation. It made me more resilient and seek self acceptance more but I won't lie that some days weren't harder than others. Other black women were the first to diss my hair, men were largely silent about it, and funny enough white people gave me the most compliments, alongside other ladies with natural hair. You literally have to learn to live without general admiration and appreciate those who appreciate your hair. My husband loves my natural hair and all the other styles in rock, including extensions. It's inspired him to grow out his own hair too and try new styles like locs- men deal with their own societal self hate issues with hair. Thankfully things are getting better, now it's just aunties from the previous generations who occasionally throw shade at my natural hairstyles
That’s true for you. I get more compliments on my natural hair from black and non-black people, when it was short and now that it’s long. My natural hair twin is Carla Hall…and I wear my hair out like she does and similar to her I don’t dye it. In general people find confidence attractive. Most BW don’t feel confident wearing their natural hair. They are most confident covering it up with other race’s hair or plastic hair. Go figure!
I've been wearing my natural hair in cornrows with crochet braids since covid because it was convenient. I wore my hair out with just cornrows last week, and I felt exposed and didn't feel as beautiful. Once I got crochet braids put back in, that feeling went away. And I hate that I felt that way. I 💯 percent agree that seeing 4c hair in media and in real life can influence how other black women wear their hair.
To be honest, I agree with her when she says our hair grows different. It grows but not like everyone. Still I LOVE my natural hair and I can attribute my 'lack of growth' to various factors I can guess. I have been natural for over 9 years too for some context. 😊 It no longer depresses me and I don’t put pressure on myself to have length. I will never put in that cream crack again and I don't wear those Indian Wigs. Yes. For me, I know girls who DO NOTHING and have length and yes they are unique. They have good genes. THATS A proven fact. If you disagree, you're probably the unique one 😂😂😂😂
Lack of growth and even length differs for everyone. For some people, long hair is mid back or waist length. May I ask how long your hair is after 9 years, for example shoulder, collarbone, armpit length, etc. I big chopped to a TWA March 2019 and 5 years later my hair has been stuck at armpit length with trims every 3 months.
@miniminott48 🤣🤣🤣 Shoulder and back length? It's still on my neck love (almost at the botton of my neck). 🥹 It's ok though. It's pretty thick and looks healthy. I get compliments all the time. 😍 I was a student for a few years and didn't care much for it. Then I couldn't afford hair products after. Stress also may have contributed to stunted growth, as well as my change in nutrition. (ie. I became vegetarian 7 years ago). Even though I am very healthy now, I know my 4c hair needs to be in cornrows to grow and thicken. I don't do any other protective styles or use gels. I have made peace with that too and am content with looking a little 'different' for glam. 😊 Wigs, braids, gel styles just won't work for me🤌🏽.
@@nicoobrowner I wear twists with no added hair and wash and gos as my go-to styles. I only use leave in conditioners and styling creams. I don't use gels. I have never worn wigs, weaves or braids so I am like you. My hair is 4A. I would love to be able to do cornrows but I don't have the skillset.

I can definitely agree. I think to it has to do with our hair practices and learning what works for your hair . What works for anther may not work for someone else . But learning to love hair will help .
Black hair does grow. But because most of us don't know how to take care of it and how retain length it breaks at the same rate it grows thus making it look like it doesn't grow. We need to stop applying "white hair" routines when taking care our it will not work.
black hair grows .2 inches a month. A month. 😧 As a black woman myself I've noticed my hair grew 3 inches a year. I didn't like that so I changed it. I ate cleaner and took biotin and collegan and took better care of my hair by deep conditioning it and washing it biweekly. Ever since I did that hair started to grow .5 inches a month. I couldn't get that length without GD the Father HE was the one who led to to know what I know to grow that length.

You have to have patience for your hair to grow, wearing wigs and not taking care of your hair underneath it of course it will either stay the same length or get matted and break off. My hair is beautiful, it just takes patience and moisture for it to grow and self love
This video says if you protect your hair and treat it well, that it can grow long. But the woman in this video has pretty short hair.. very beautiful, so glad she's rocking it, but it is short. There is science showing that 4c hair is the most thin type of hair with less cuticle protection, so length retention is much more difficult than other hair types. So short 4c hair is even harder to style and maintain, even an afro, because it gets dented, asymmetrical, and tangled throughout the day. If the 4c hair is long, at least you can easily pull it back into a bun or puff. With short 4c hair, when it gets messed up, all you can do is cover it up with a scarf or hat. So if you are covering it up most of the time, is it that different from wearing a wig or extensions. Yes you can just do natural twists or braids, but its going to look thin and not very feminine. Yes we should love our hair and everything about ourselves, but the texturism in society is real. You might not get the same acceptance and attraction with natural 4c hair. Guess what I'm saying is love your 4c hair, but not with the expectation that everyone else will too. But hopefully as we love our hair more, it will change the way society views it too!
You are correct ( I have looser texture curls 3A-3C) . However, too many women with the tightest coils, 4C) have been made to feel like their hair isn’t good enough and it simply isn’t true . Also, I feel like the obsession with growing long hair and it appearing long when tightly coiled, needs to stop .

Don’t believe that. So many other factors not accounted for in study. Most BW with kinky coily 4B 4C hair grows and coils under the scalp before breaking the surface vs a straight hair person. Also many BW eat trash diets/nutrition and don’t get enough leafy veggies, fruit, foods with iron, vitamin D and Omega 3 fatty acids , water & exercise 🏃🏿♀️🏋🏾♀️🚶🏾♀️ BW like to do hundreds of new and tight styles breaking and stressing delicate tresses. @@Softsoul. it grows the same as every other race. It just shrinks and is more susceptible to damage because of the curls.

If you notice your hair has more tangles when you take out protective styles, you may need to do styles more often, (my mini) for me, when I leave it alone, it grows like a weed. No brushing when dry unless you straighen it. Make sure you use heat protection. It takes work, but if you take care of it, you can do pretty much anything with it. 💞

My 4A hair grew the longest and fastest in locs. Down to my butt. I cut them like 3 times and they grew back fast and long.

Even if it did statistically grow 0.2 inches a month on average compared to a white woman’s 0.5, 0.2 is still more than 0.2. It may take longer for us to grow out her but so what? (My statement is for the lady in the video)

Right, I agree. On average, mine grows 1 inch per month. Give or take a half of an inch depending on the season and time of year, I wish folks would mention how hair growth can even be seasonal. My hair growth slows down a bit in the fall and winter, but grows like weeds during the spring and summer.

I have 4c hair. I feel like a clown when I wear hair that does not look like it is coming from my scalp. Even if you do like your hair looking longer, there are hair extensions that look like our natural hair and look amazing.....

How funny that it is said that our hair type 4 c is very fragile, because at school the children who had type 1 and 2 always said, you have weave, braids, straight hair, and all kinds of things, and still do you have hair on your head? I have a fire taper cut and just keeping my hair shaped has played a huge roll in how much I love it. Regardless if I have super defined coils or a 4 day old frizzy Afro, the shape is key to me loving my style. It’s so much more expensive to keep my hair cut vs when I wore it long. My short fro accents my features and the cut really compliments my face shape and natural beauty.

I think you had a very balanced view on this, compared to some of the others videos I’ve seen on this topic. I’ve been natural for over 10 years, but we have to be honest about our hair. It typically does not grow as fast as other races, and genetics play a big factor in some black women with long hair. Some people have the simplest routine and their hair can grow long, but others need more TLC throughout the week to keep their hair moisturized. I can’t even wear box braids anymore, because they snatch all of my edges, even though I love braids. 😩 It’s simply not a one-size-fits all when it comes to natural hair, which is why some black women do not have the patience for wearing their natural hair, and that’s okay if they choose not to. I just get sick of seeing all of these extra fake wigs and laces that don’t match skin tones. 😩😂

Been natural for 15 years and I'll be the first to say it's tough as a woman to accept that you just won't be complimented as much with it. You have to be mentally ready to choose the health of your hair over social validation. It made me more resilient and seek self acceptance more but I won't lie that some days weren't harder than others. Other black women were the first to diss my hair, men were largely silent about it, and funny enough white people gave me the most compliments, alongside other ladies with natural hair.
You literally have to learn to live without general admiration and appreciate those who appreciate your hair. My husband loves my natural hair and all the other styles in rock, including extensions. It's inspired him to grow out his own hair too and try new styles like locs- men deal with their own societal self hate issues with hair.
Thankfully things are getting better, now it's just aunties from the previous generations who occasionally throw shade at my natural hairstyles
That’s true for you. I get more compliments on my natural hair from black and non-black people, when it was short and now that it’s long.

Most BW don’t feel confident wearing their natural hair. They are most confident covering it up with other race’s hair or plastic hair. Go figure!
I've been wearing my natural hair in cornrows with crochet braids since covid because it was convenient. I wore my hair out with just cornrows last week, and I felt exposed and didn't feel as beautiful. Once I got crochet braids put back in, that feeling went away. And I hate that I felt that way. I 💯 percent agree that seeing 4c hair in media and in real life can influence how other black women wear their hair.

To be honest, I agree with her when she says our hair grows different. It grows but not like everyone. Still I LOVE my natural hair and I can attribute my 'lack of growth' to various factors I can guess. I have been natural for over 9 years too for some context. 😊 It no longer depresses me and I don’t put pressure on myself to have length. I will never put in that cream crack again and I don't wear those Indian Wigs. Yes. For me, I know girls who DO NOTHING and have length and yes they are unique. They have good genes. THATS A proven fact. If you disagree, you're probably the unique one 😂😂😂😂
Lack of growth and even length differs for everyone. For some people, long hair is mid back or waist length. May I ask how long your hair is after 9 years, for example shoulder, collarbone, armpit length, etc. I big chopped to a TWA March 2019 and 5 years later my hair has been stuck at armpit length with trims every 3 months.
@miniminott48 🤣🤣🤣 Shoulder and back length? It's still on my neck love (almost at the botton of my neck). 🥹 It's ok though. It's pretty thick and looks healthy. I get compliments all the time. 😍 I was a student for a few years and didn't care much for it. Then I couldn't afford hair products after. Stress also may have contributed to stunted growth, as well as my change in nutrition. (ie. I became vegetarian 7 years ago). Even though I am very healthy now, I know my 4c hair needs to be in cornrows to grow and thicken. I don't do any other protective styles or use gels. I have made peace with that too and am content with looking a little 'different' for glam. 😊 Wigs, braids, gel styles just won't work for me🤌🏽.
@@nicoobrowner I wear twists with no added hair and wash and gos as my go-to styles. I only use leave in conditioners and styling creams. I don't use gels. I have never worn wigs, weaves or braids so I am like you. My hair is 4A. I would love to be able to do cornrows but I don't have the skillset.

I can definitely agree. I think to it has to do with our hair practices and learning what works for your hair . What works for anther may not work for someone else . But learning to love hair will help .
Black hair does grow. But because most of us don't know how to take care of it and how retain length it breaks at the same rate it grows thus making it look like it doesn't grow. We need to stop applying "white hair" routines when taking care our it will not work.

As a black woman myself I've noticed my hair grew 3 inches a year. I didn't like that so I changed it.
I ate cleaner and took biotin and collegan and
took better care of my hair by deep conditioning it and washing it biweekly. Ever since I did that hair started to grow .5 inches a month. I couldn't get that length without GD the Father HE was the one who led to to know what I know to grow that length.

You have to have patience for your hair to grow, wearing wigs and not taking care of your hair underneath it of course it will either stay the same length or get matted and break off. My hair is beautiful, it just takes patience and moisture for it to grow and self love

This video says if you protect your hair and treat it well, that it can grow long. But the woman in this video has pretty short hair.. very beautiful, so glad she's rocking it, but it is short. There is science showing that 4c hair is the most thin type of hair with less cuticle protection, so length retention is much more difficult than other hair types. So short 4c hair is even harder to style and maintain, even an afro, because it gets dented, asymmetrical, and tangled throughout the day. If the 4c hair is long, at least you can easily pull it back into a bun or puff. With short 4c hair, when it gets messed up, all you can do is cover it up with a scarf or hat. So if you are covering it up most of the time, is it that different from wearing a wig or extensions. Yes you can just do natural twists or braids, but its going to look thin and not very feminine. Yes we should love our hair and everything about ourselves, but the texturism in society is real. You might not get the same acceptance and attraction with natural 4c hair. Guess what I'm saying is love your 4c hair, but not with the expectation that everyone else will too. But hopefully as we love our hair more, it will change the way society views it too!

You are correct ( I have looser texture curls 3A-3C) . However, too many women with the tightest coils, 4C) have been made to feel like their hair isn’t good enough and it simply isn’t true . Also, I feel like the obsession with growing long hair and it appearing long when tightly coiled, needs to stop .
Absolutely, we all have different textures but type 4 hair has dealt with many negative stereotypes for years now, and we are undoing that.

Don’t believe that. So many other factors not accounted for in study. Most BW with kinky coily 4B 4C hair grows and coils under the scalp before breaking the surface vs a straight hair person. Also many BW eat trash diets/nutrition and don’t get enough leafy veggies, fruit, foods with iron, vitamin D and Omega 3 fatty acids , water & exercise 🏃🏿♀️🏋🏾♀️🚶🏾♀️
