I think the focus about natural hair conversation shouldn’t be on the excuses we give but addressing the root. It’s really hard to be proud of being black in this country. Everything here makes us want to conform and be everything but black. People have to heal their relationship with their blackness and their ancestry before they’ll attempt to heal the relationship with hair. Loving our black hair is to love our black self wholly. Loving our black hair is to see ourselves as the standard of beauty. Unfortunately many many of us do not hold ourselves in high enough regard to love the things that makes us undeniably black and beautiful.

You know that’s true, being a product of the 50 40 70 80. I’ve noticed the change now with black women and others around the globe. This county has became ANTI BLACK. I saying the products, the nature of how we eat here, the number of supermarkets, the economy etc. I see because I’ve been around 70 years. Im still working. It’s a change.

You're absolutely right because as a Haitian I never see other Haitian girls/women complain about their natural hair. In the Caribbean/Africa natural hair is the norm especially for young women. It's not as complicated as Americans make it, mainly because girls aren't introduced to perms, wigs, weaves, etc. So you'll never see them complain on why it's hard, they look childish, takes too long, etc. because it's all they know.

Oh my, this is SO true!! I lived in SVG for 2years and that was when I grew confident in my hair and body! Caribbeans have something we all need to learn from. Natural hair is accepted in West Africa but non-textured hair also has a huge market.🤍🤍

@@Tinuola Oh wow, I’m so happy for you. But yes, black women definitely convinced themselves of something that’s not true. If weaves, perms, and wigs didn’t exist there wouldn’t be a such thing as, “natural hair is hard.” ❤️🥰

I get so tired of seeing videos of BW complaining about the expensive and difficulty of their natural hair. Why would anyone else see us as beautiful when we keep telling the world how terrible it is to have Type 4 hair? I started my second natural hair journey almost twelve years ago, and yes, in the beginning it was very difficult, but I stuck with it until I knew what I was doing. Needless to say, I’m so glad I did!
Let change the narrative, people. No more excuses for neglecting our crowns. Time to be unapologetically Black.
Thank you for sharing this video. 😊❤️

To my fellow BW learning how to work with their hair all over again, it's a process and it's not gonna happen over night. I had locs for 10 years and I cut them so i was basically starting over. I had some tough times but it does get better and easier with time and practice. 💖

The only tning about natural hair that was hard for me was detangling with combs and brushes. It was super painful for my scalp and rough on my hair strands and only caused breakage. Now I finger dentagle as the primary method of removing tangles and shed hair. It's no longer hard. ❤

    • @Vienna-ng6ix

@honks9484 it's so much better! I've tried to go back to the "traditional" method whenever I see a viral hair brush like the tangle teezer or unbrush, and it doesn'tglide through my hair like it does with everyone else's. So, from now on, I'm sticking with what works for me 🤷‍♀️

@@Tinuola The difficult part of having my hair is styling my hair and growing my hair because I always have breakage, so I never see any growth 😭
I hate cornrows and weaves and wigs, just doesn't work for me. The reason is because I need to acess my scalp at all times to moisturise, because its as dry as the Sahara dessert!😅
And styling! I have difficulty in knowing what to style my hair that doesn't take 3 hours and when I follow a tutorial with the same hair products, the end results just never turns out like in the video 📹 😑 No matter how hard I try, I just end up wasting my time and money 😭

You said a lot, but it was very vague. What’s causing the breakage? What is you washing and moisturizing routine? What styles are you doing and why is it taking 3+ hours to do them, especially if your hair is short?

    • @OrlaAfikiruweh
      @OrlaAfikiruweh 4 місяці тому

How did I say was vague?? I said what I have have tried- which is the cornrows and wigs and weaves that don't work for me
So I just wear my natural hair out- either wearing it curly or straight.
But I have been wearing straight for a week or so as its easier for me to deal with.
These YT hairstyles take me hours to do because the tutorials are not easy how they make out and have so many steps.
I normally try to wear box braids (ocassionally whenever I can afford to get my hair done) or just micro mini braids with my natural hair.
I moisturise my hair and scalp every day with a light oil (Argan oil) as I have low porosity hair) and wear a satin bonnet at night.
I wash my hair using a anti dandruff shampoo and then a moisturizing shampoo, and conditioner and then rinse. Next I use a hot oil treatment on my hair and scalp for 45 minutes then rinse out and towel dry/blowdry. I wash my hair once a week
The reason why I didn't want to write down everything in one go, is because its alot of information and I didn't want you to be reading for ages
      Hope this explains everything

My hair is growing and my routine is simple... shampoo, conditioner, leave in conditioner and either mousse or grease depending on if I'm wearing it stretched or shrunken. I'm also not afraid to use a blow dryer on heat. I use heat protection. Only time I do protein treatment or hot oil treatment is after I've had my hair in braids for months or a silk press

To me it's not hard but when you have long hair it takes time. Also I read somewhere that Chinese people used to have an official ritual wash day, and everyone would wash and take care of their hair.
I think capitalism put us in that constant state of stress and overwork and it's difficult to take our time to do beautiful styles. I'm a fervent advocate foe the 4 days work week because I know will do so many beautiful styles instead of just plaits.

I love to color my hair but I agree , dye especially bleach is not good for us . I think it also has carcinogens and can cause immune illness .
I think my biggest mistake was also asking salons to do all over hair color which of course, sat on my scalp and who knows what chemicals my body absorbed in that 30 minute to an hour period . If I color my hair again which I don’t think I will , I will keep it far away from my scalp . It will have to be the very end mid shaft or ends itself . But color tangles and dries out the hair as you mentioned making wash day annoying as the color ages

I think washing and styling is easy for me. My type 3c/4a hair is easier to wash when I section it off into six twists/braids and shampoo. It tangles less bc my hair isn’t all close together where it can get matted and stuck together and it makes detangling a breeze as well!

Here in Brazil, companies make a lot of profit from this mentality that curly hair is hard work, and some women choose to straighten it, and most regret it because they think that straightened hair isn't hard work and isn't expensive.
