No topping Clare Torry’s original version. But I think any of these three ladies could have tackled all three parts. I honestly think that David Gilmour wanted all three to have their place in the spotlight. He’s always appreciated all of the artists in his band(s) and given them appreciation.
@@mikewatts867 Sorry Mike but your dead wrong! I have seen Gilmore try to perform Great Gig in The Sky with a few others and no one and I mean no one has or can come even close to Clare Torry, You can tell just by isolating these three that they can't do what Clare did.
The message is to portray the 7 emotions of grief or the feelings involved before you die. Shock or Disbelief, denial, anger, bargaining, guilt, depression and acceptance. Knowing this, listen to the song and you can understand how her voice flows beautifully between every emotion.
That is not the case. The truth is the great gig in the sky is GOD. The song is about the pain from losing a loved one in a war fought over religion. That is right from David Gilmour himself.
I imagine half of the comments are going to tell you this, man; and they are right. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with this performance... but Clare Torrys' performance was legendary. Iconic... for so many good people. peace and love.
As great as these ladies are (and I saw them live on this tour in 1994), go back and listen to the studio version again. Yes, folk, Claire Torrey's version was amazing. However, to sing this live day after day on a tour would be extremely difficult. Especially when providing other background vocals through the set. So you split it between three performers and you get an amazing performance each show for months on end.
Back in O.C. Calif when I was 27 my wife heard a commercial on the radio about a P.F. show coming up. Knowing I am a Floyd fan she called the radio station (KMET - LA, “The Mighty Met”) to get information on the concert, The DJ on live radio Cynthia Fox…. said...."Congratulations, YOU are caller number 10, YOU just won tickets to the show and the Sound Check Party before the show"... I met David Gilmour back stage. He gave us both a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I told him his music will stand the test of time with anything from Beethoven or Mozart. He smiled even bigger. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know. . I told him in my eyes he’s a “Legend“. He thanked me and said “Enjoy the show”…. during the concert after the song “Money” he looked right at me and said…. “On saxophone, another Legend, Mr. Scott Page” … acknowledging my comment to him. It is my favorite moment in over 300 shows I’ve seen. All of us fortunate enough to have seen this show live were in a TRANCE.... MESMERIZED the entire show... as you can imagine. Always enjoy your reactions! I was there. I'm old. And I've never forgotten bringing the much-awaited album home in a rush, getting friends in, and just sitting (floating!) in silence while the album took us all on a ride. The amazing thing is, the album almost never got produced. The record company hated it (too advanced for their minds) and only after pressure from the band did they agree to print 25k albums. No words needed for this one. Remember the studio version on Dark Side of the Moon? R.I.P. Rick Wright (keyboards). PLEASE also do Pink Floyd "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" live at Knebworth, 1990. Masterful. Please also check out David Gilmour and Pink Floyd's new live song (first in 28 years) "Hey Hey Rise Up" in solidarity with Ukraine. Very moving. They came out of retirement to make it.
I think Gilmour liked the last gal because he quit playing just to watch her towards the end. P.S. There are a lot of people who say this song is very similar to the 5 stages of dying. Denial not having anyone singing and the music still playing then Coming in with fire and passion as they rage about it, then taking it down a notch then bargaining in the middle. Then working your way through the depression and finally getting to acceptance of your fate at the end. Clare Torry did it better, but they did it very well too.

Also Van you're my favorite content creator. Can you check out the song slacker by umphrey's mcgee live 12/31/18 if you take paid requests I'll pay to have you react to it. They're my favorite band.
"High Hopes" on the Remember that night Live
One of the best tunes ever written and one of the best performances also unbelievable 😍 Please check out the Atom version its properly properly superb 👌
With all due respect, - The "Atom" version? Really? How about Dark Side of the Moon? That's like saying check out the Beatles For Sale version of I Am the Walrus. I'm liking to think that was just a typo. I'm not beyond such mistakes myself, so I don't mean any disrespect, but we need to direct the LFRs in the right direction, not to an album that has no Great Gig on it. Peace dude.
@@jeffmcdonald5901 if you think Atoms version isn’t up to scratch that’s your opinion! My opinion is Atoms version is probably the best not including the original! That’s my opinion on it!! 👍
@@kevinlawes591 Sorry brother. You misunderstand me. I'm just pointing out your mistake in saying it's from Atom Heart Mother. It's Dark Side of the Moon. That's all I was saying. Just a friendly correction is all I meant. Clare Torry's version is the one we're both talking about and it's from Dark Side of the Moon. Not Atom Heart Mother. If we truly want him to react to the best version, we need to correctly steer him to the correct album is all I'm saying. Peace. No disrespect intended. We're both talking about the greatest version there is and it's wonderful.
@@jeffmcdonald5901 Sorry Jeff was knackered from work yesterday my apologies for being a grumpy crank! Words and the way they come across via text format doesn't help the situation sometimes anyway once again I apologise and please check out the Atom version of this song! Enjoy mate 👍
@@kevinlawes591 It's quite alright. I know that in text form the emotional context of what someone writes is subject to whatever the reader's imagination injects into it, regardless of whether it was the intended stress or not. Reading my initial message, I can see how you could have taken it as a snotty criticism. I should have been more strategic with my words.
The studio version is the one for this one
I saw them as women yelling back saying, you know what we had to deal with as women saying, "What the he11" did you have us go through all that?
You need to hear the studio version
Pink Floyd live? How about "Run Like Hell" from the Pulse concert 1994 I believe!
HIGH HOPES in the Version of David Gilmour Live at Gdansk
No words needed for this one. Remember the studio version on Dark Side of the Moon? R.I.P. Rick Wright (keyboards). PLEASE also do Pink Floyd "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" live at Knebworth, 1990. Masterful. Please also check out David Gilmour and Pink Floyd's new live song (first in 28 years) "Hey Hey Rise Up" in solidarity with Ukraine. Very moving. They came out of retirement to make it.
Dude. Pink Floyd IS their own GENRE...
Love this song and your reaction. If you have not done so, you might want to take a listen to their song 'Sorrow' from the Pulse concert.
Please experience the original album version!
Love a lot of their songs, but I think Floyd's best stand alone song is Learning to Fly.
