I met David Gilmour in 1984 back stage at a concert in Hollywood Calif. He gave me a signed album that I have in my music room. We talked for 22 minutes. I called him…“The Master Of The Stratocaster” He smiled. I asked if I could shake both his hands that make such great guitar solos, he smiled bigger and said “Sure” and shook both hands at the same time, making a cross between us, I smiled HUGE. I asked him to describe his technique of playing guitar, he replied… “I strike a note, bend it, shake it and then release it”…. Yes, he does that quite well, better than any other guitarist I know

I love that the original and the performance versions (both Pulse and The Delicate Sound of Thunder versions) are opportunities for the vocalists to offer variations on the theme (like jazz, right?). Still, Clare Torry's album-track is indelibly etched into my mind as the standard. Nevertheless, I especially remember Durga McBroom's "The Great Gig in the Sky" performance on The Delicate Sound of Thunder, and in a lot of ways the trio in that concert offered some of the best live Pink Floyd vocal moments, especially Margret Taylor's flourishes in the final solo of "On the Turning Away" (which elevates the song above the already-great album track). This does not diminish the also-excellent vocal moments in Pulse, though, "Time" being the best live vocals of that song to my mind. Anyway, my mind wanders, and I must break away from the saxaphonic (why not) reminiscence. Peace, you two!

Hi, yes, I had a hard time choosing, and actually I chose this one because it's the version I know the least (I've listened to DSOT way more over the years than Pulse), so it was fun for me to experience it again too.

It's interesting to contrast the singer's choices on this tour versus the Roger Waters version that's also very popular. In each case, the approach by the production is slightly different, but it's the little changes between each versions individual singers that really helps a person understand what 'finding your voice' means.

I met David Gilmour back stage at a concert in California 1984. I asked him about the meaning - reason for “Great Gig In The Sky”…. David’s answer was something like…. .I was asked if Pink Floyd would ever do a song about Religion like some others have… so I said, You are referring to the great gig in the sky they call “God“. What words could be used to describe all the pain and suffering, anguish and despair caused by religious beliefs. All the crying and wailing from mothers who lost their husbands or sons in a war fought over religious differences. The only vocals should be just the sound of a mothers crying with pain and suffering. That’s the true intentions of the song. We couldn't tell Clare so she wouldn't say anything to the media. We didn’t want to make that public so as to avoid any religious boycott like what happened to the Beatles after Lennon made his comment about Jesus. The speaking heard at the beginning was recorded at Apple records prior to the recording of the song. Roger Waters placed a recorder at the door asking anyone who walked by to answer some questions into the microphone. The janitor stopped and recorded his answer to the question….”Are You Afraid Of Dying”?. It was decided to add the recording to the start of “Great Gig In The Sky”. It leads people to believe the song is about dying, but that is actually not the case. The Great Gig In The Sky…is GOD … The incredible vocals from Clare Torry happened when she did not know what they wanted. David Gilmour told her to pretend her voice is a Saxophone like on other songs on the album, no words, just tones. Results are legendary.

The original Clare Torry recording isn't so much a version as the original creation of that piece. I think they did a few takes on it but ended up using her first one because it was just fucking genius as it was totally improvised and she was really in the zone. Everyone who's performed it since has given it their own twist and I think Sam and Durga knocked it out of the park in this version. I think Sam actually damaged her voice doing this song and had to stop singing for a while.

I hear people blather on about Claire Torry. Where was she? Why wasn't she on this tour? How much time and effort did it take to remaster her performance. These 3 ladies killed it Live. The most remarkable thing about about this song is how Gilmour and the boys restrained themselves so the Ladies could have and hold the spotlight. Giving them the glory they deserve.
