Welcome to Dr. Matthew Boes’s Rotator Cuff Repair Rehabilitation video series. This video is designed to help maximize your recovery following rotator cuff repair/surgery. The goal of our Phase I program for rotator cuff rehabilitation is to allow healing of the tendon and minimize shoulder stiffness. Remember the following as you engage in Phase I rotator cuff exercises:
Engage in passive motion only; do not lift your arm on its own
Engage in no active motion of the shoulder (ex: lifting arm away from side on its own)
Engage in no motion behind the back for 8 weeks following surgery
Wear sling at all times (including sleep) except for dressing, showering and when conducting exercises
Remove sling completely only at the direction of your physician
Equipment needed may include a stick or cane, pulley, resistance bands and light dumbbells
The following rotator cuff passive motion exercises, which are demonstrated in this video, should be conducted during phase I of your rotator cuff rehab:
1. PENDULUMS
2. STICK EXTERNAL ROTATION
3. ACTIVE MOTION ELBOW, WRIST, AND HAND
4. GRIP STRENGHTHENING
5. TABLE TOP WARM-UP
6. SHRUGS
7. FORWARD ROLLS
8. BACKWARD ROLLS
Icing is very important after each therapy session, so be sure to place an ice pack or cooling pad on the affected shoulder for 10 minutes to help limit any irritation from exercise. If the affected joint is stiff, try using moist heat for 10 minutes prior to exercise to help loosen things up.
This video should not be used as a substitute for regular physical therapy visits and guidance from your physician. Only progress from one phase to the next based on recommendation from your physician. Most therapy regimens, particularly after rotator cuff repair, are based on a healing timeline. Progressing too quickly, even though it may feel okay at first, may put you at risk for injury. Regular physical therapy visits are valuable for giving you feedback on your progress and helping to ensure you are doing exercises properly. If you develop any questions or concerns regarding your condition while using this video, contact your physician. Best of luck in your recovery from your rotator cuff repair.

Very thorough videos and great information! Best I've seen on youtube so far for the phases of recovery. Thanks for these.
Your series of post-op exercises are excellent. I'm 9 weeks post-op and although at rehab 5 days a week 1 hour each day, I really need to do more and these videos are fantastic.
Dr. Matthew; thanks for a nice presentation. This is the detailed and informative presentation on the Rotator Cuff tear. Thanks.
Very informative video👍🏻 when do i start doing those exercise? Is Two weeks after the surgery a good time to stat?
I have undergone for complete Tear of Supraspinatus Tendon Tear surgery just 4 weeks ago.
Is this exercises useful for me Doctor?
Pendulum works really well
Will need to do this buy my self at home . One week before surgery, my insurance company canceled me .
Would you say its a no to add weights for the elbow flexion and wrist exercises?
Videos not playing properly. No voice instructions.
Good protocol...!!👌
Looked good but video keeps skipping. Are there any alternate links? tried running low quality & had same playback issues
here's a different link of the same video : ua-cam.com/video/17aognosEgk/v-deo.html
Second link worked great. DO we know how many weeks out of surgery is Phase 1-2-3-4?
Yes skipped on me too.
Dr doctor. I just had my shoulder surgery due to shoulder tendon tear on my right. About 1 month ago I am going for my physiotherapy now. Can I follow n do this at the same time? How long is my shoulder back to recovery?
Very helpful 👏👏👏
I have left shoulder supraspinatus rupture. I had surgery 6 day ago. Hurting my left shoulder when i sleep, for that i need some exercise. Txx
The videos are terrific, how many weeks out of surgery is Phase 1-2-3-4? Thank You!
Yes, I have same question. In my mind if must use sling for 4 weeks, the phase #1 can start no earlier.
That's what I would think too but some exercises, such as squeezing the ball, seem to be to keep up strength and flexibility while wearing a sling. Did you ever figure it out? I am 5 weeks post op right now.
Hi Mindy, I'm at 8 weeks now, out of the sling and I've been going to PT twice a week plus doing some work at home and it's coming along nicely. Really doesn't hurt anymore just a little ache now and then when I sleep on it wrong. I can hold my arm straight out in front of me now. I'm looking forward to getting back to 98%! I hope you have a speedy recovery!!
Damon King that's great to hear! I'm glad you are doing well. I start PT next week.
Hello Mindy, I am at 8 weeks post op now. Do you remember if the front of your shoulder with rotator repair continued to hurt even with stretching exercises for a long period?
hi there ,quick question as per the instructions all the exercises should be with sling but then in video its demonstrated without sling ?
lucky ar it says except for dressing, showering and exercises.
After how many weeks of surgery ... Phase 1 exercises can be started ?
This is my fourth week after surgery on my rotator cuff. I am starting phase one on my own, taking it slow of course. I start physical therapy in two weeks. I do respect physical therapists and appreciate them, but the sooner I am done with therapy the better… no offense to anyone who is a physical therapist, much love 🤙🏽
I'm not taking therapy ... My surgeon told me some exercises ..

Thank you very much for these. My Mom recently had a full tear repair of the Supraspinatus tendon a month ago.
