Welcome to my Austin Mini Mayfair 998cc Automatic restoration. This project car was bought from e-bay in July 2020 for the sum of £4000. My intentions are to carry out a light restoration and make the car the best it can be while keeping it almost completely original. The end result will be a time warp back to 1984 and the car will look like it has just left the showroom.
This Mini Mayfair is rare in that it has only covered 12,000 miles since new, only 330 miles per year! The shell is almost completely rust free and has never been welded or had any panels replaced.
In this episode, I remove the front subframe and strip all the components ready for sandblasting and powder coating

Watching you drag that mat around, because of your knees reminded me to mention I have overalls with built in knee pads, as i have bad knees as well.

You make more progress in a few months than most people make in years. After talking with several, I believe I found my powder coating guy. At least I'm going to be taking my subframes and wheels to him. Just trying to decide on the color for subframes...

Where you have got to so quickly is pretty impressive and shows what excellent condition the car was in. You seem to be as Churchill once said:
"This is not the beginning of the end but possibly the end of the beginning"
To me powder coating the subframes is a no brainer as it definitely works better than paint. I had Noah's done months ago when i was getting mechanicals sorted (and still chickening out of attacking the rust and fresh air that I called a body). Minilites are with Suffolk Enamellers now.
Oh and the 'Intro after the event'? Call it an Outro....

Definitely put a set of gators on it including steering if there original. Not sure about powder coating though cause if it does chip & moisture gets in it tends to blow think id wet paint them. With you on wanting to keep the costs down but some things are just better done now than 12 months down the line

Hiya Keith-it seems such a shame to replace parts that have done so little mileage. You're a perfectionist mate! Think I might put a bid in on Tardis next year. Keep well. (by the way, I didn't know you had 2 daughters)............... Say hello to Ang from us.

Are you going to convert to a manual box Keith? It would probably make it much more saleable if you are going to sell it. But it's too nice to sell!!!

    • @classicminiworkshop
      @classicminiworkshop  3 роки тому

Nah, it's going to stay Auto. With the low mileage and the additional cost of a manual engine and box I do not think it will pay back

Have you considered EPoxying your shop floor? If you can get an even surface and then EPoxy it, it'll be easier to clean. I use a squeegee to clean mine up after heavy rain or snow.

Are you planning to refurb the rear subframe Keith?

Certainly not an instructional video, the only thing I learnt was that your as OCD about your garage floor as my best mate and best mechanic ever Dilly 😁
Powder coat the thing and have done with it, you could have added strengthening to the tower uprights when you had it out and before sending away.
Still make it last don’t be all as per the factory as we all know especially the last sports packs versions the build quality was pants going on diabolical.
Keep up the good work and hope you get a handle on Editing as I’d personally like to see less of your A*se on time lapse 🤣

LOL, you and me both. I tend to steer away from instructional videos, someone always knows better. I try to edit out my arse where possible, it's not one of my best features. Not that I have many. I did have the subframe powder-coated in the end, good advice 👍
