    You just made my day with the brilliant idea of raising the body off and leave the subframe on the floor - instead of jacking the body and carefully lowering the subframe while trying to keep it from falling. Thank you so very much Keith!

    Rick..underseal.. Who on earth invented this?
    My mini rotted out from the inside out due to bad underseal. Removed all of it, and now use stonechip.
    Keith, another awesome step by step episode.

    I also totally agree with removing the underseal. My bootfloor took me 16hrs 🤯 totally worth it though. The bootfloor looks very similar to mine as rust goes. I also coming to bingley hall in March with the wife & I'll definitely look for you & come over to say hello 👋. Loved this weeks video 👍🏻

    Its a ball ache and you do feel like its not worth the effort but you would regret not getting that underseal off. And the amount of rust rot proved you right. Not excessive but enough to need finding and fixing. And its all about doing a job right.
    This car has turned out to be a bit of a hidden gem. Although you wouldn't feel like that after 8 hours of graft!

    Great effort, the new owner will be so happy with how far you are going! This is classic though and a warning to anyone buying second hand, it just shows unrestored minis might look good but if there's some rust there will be more and a lot of work to restore them.

    I feel your pain Keith, I have done many welding repairs on various classics over the years, sometimes it seems there is no end to it, but this Mini is looking quite solid, at least you have a lot of good metal to weld to, your doing a great job.

    Hi Keith! Brilliant video as always! We really appreciate the step by step filming! But you made my Dad feel a little queasy with the work ahead! 🤣 Thankfully, our 1992 portuguese Rover Mini has a good subframe but the boot has holes in the same places as project Bruce but to a lesser extent! Looking forward to part 2! Hope you are keeping well and safe! José and Tony

    Hi Keith. I wonder why most Minis have rust in that same place in the boot? The rust always seems to be in the floor corners where the subframe bolts through. Leaking boot lid, condensation, moisture coming up through the bolt holes? Issigonis certainly wasn't thinking about longevity when he engineered the Mini.

    When i replaced my shell i used black waxoil on the underside it keeps the corrosion at bay but looks naff and you get covered in it when doing any work as it stays soft

  • @franktaylor7617
    @franktaylor7617 2 роки тому +1

    I just completed those two (I had a few more) repairs.
    The closing panels under the floor were solid with only surface rust so I didn't need to replace them.
    I formed the two panels myself.
    The only thing that didn't come out just right was the placement of the fuel tank strap bracket. I had to reproduce a copy of the original. It came out pretty well. I think my placement was off a touch.
    The tank could go outboard just a 1/4" more but it's solid and the filler neck is still looking fine.
    So I did both sides below the tail lights, on top of the wheel arch and one spot hidden but the tank.
    👍
    I didn't remove the subframe.
    I'm watching your video and replacing ball joints.😁
    Just cleaned up the hub now. I don't have new bearing or seals but they look and sound fine.
    A repack just be good until next winter.
    By that time. I'm sure I'll upgrades something and replace the bearing and seals.
    Don't get discouraged. Keep pushing.
    We can't let these little cars die.✌️🇺🇸

    Isn't it strange how the drivers heal board has gone but the passenger one, the one that is in the wet gutter all the time is perfect? Some days you feel like you have not done a lot and feel deflated when really you have. Go away, grab a brew, have 5 and all is well again. Great work there Keith 👍

    Another great video Kieth. If you didn’t like horrible jobs you wouldn’t be working on mini’s - there’s always a horrible job hiding around the corner. It’s irritating for you as the rear is much better than it could be, but bad enough that it needs doing. As always you’re doing a proper job, not leaving it for someone else. You must have videoed almost everything - have you thought of cataloguing the jobs so they can be easily looked up - Keith’s video Manual?

    I was selling new BLMC product in the mid 1970s mainly Austin Morris group at London's biggest distributor. We offered purchasers a choice of 2 underbody treatments on new cars. Because. the cars then were stored on grass as they came out of the factory they were first sprayed in a hard drying wax both on top and underneath.We PDI the cars in wax then drive them to either a Ziebart station where they had all box sections drilled injected with a black bitumen tar like compound which never hardened and remained sticky- they also sprayed the whole underside with the same black sticky to the touch material. However for half that price a firm Called Metcalfe Nurse collected masked and sprayed the whole underside everything except the exhaust in a very thick hard setting dark brown compound about half an inch thick which over time became brittle .

    What did you use to get the underseal off. Need to remove fairly new waxoil from the underside of my mini, what would you recommend. Its still oily and not brittle. The previous owner done the sills and back end and painted it with red oxide and then just waxoiled over the top so want to take it all off and paint underneath and then re waxoil it or would you just leave it? Think it would be okay?
    Also I've got a new pattern rear subframe forsale if your interested. Also got valance, and closing panels if you are interested
    Thanks
    William

    • @classicminiworkshop
      @classicminiworkshop  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks William, I've already purchased the subframe and panels. I just used a scrapper and hammer to chip away at the underseal. It was old and brittle so came off easily. I would clean off the waxoil and re-paint. Try some brake cleaner on it, or petrol on a rag works well, but be very careful with the fumes etc.
