I am half British and half Norwegian. My mother came from the Ostfold, and my first words were pure Norwegian, but soon my English father pout a stop to that. Now 59, I still find I can pronounce Norwegian idiomatically though till seeing this I would struggle with reading Norwegian out loud - you have opened a door for me! On many visits to my grandparents [up till 2000] I could follow the News on radio and TV, but not actually keep up with spoken Norwegian in conversation. I knew enough to get by in Norwegian in shops and the airport and was often taken for Norwegian at first [I look totally Norsk - not tall, completely fair, and wiry build], but as soon as I stumbled in Norwegian the smiles came out! And Norwegians love practicing their English! So though I visited Norway probably thirty times, I still have poor Norwegian in conversation. On the other hand, I do think it will be worth getting better at it, because my pronunciation is idiomatic. In fact something like Received English in this country. Thanks for such a lovely Video. This is so overwhelming already!! I've already turned my phone language to Norwegian. I hate pronunciation so much right now. I just spent a long time singing the Norwegian alphabet in order to pronounce every thing and OMG. I have never sung the whole alphabet that much in a day. I love how the W is pronounced.
Æ was in English long ago. It was called æsch or perhaps æsh, pronounced as ash in English. Interesting note: gift(poison) in Norsk and I think German, related to gift (English) because they are both "given", showing how different idea are connected.

Rewatching this video over and over until I can pronounce it seamlessly🙈 Edit: I can report after 3 days of practice and memorising this video I can now say the Norwegian alphabet easily and pronounced correctly and I’m finally ready to move on to video 2☺️

This pronunciation is so frustrating for me! But I love that I can play it over and over again to hear the sounds. When you said R is one of the hardest sounds to make I was not happy as I had to go to speech therapy as a kid for my Rs as an English speaker. This will be fun.. 🤣🤞 Great video though! Very clear and well made video! Dialects are very pronounced in Norway, so if you visit Norway be prepared to hear a lot of variations :) When learning though, the unofficial official dialect used in this video is definitely the one to learn! An example of dialect differences is the word "Øl", which can be pronounced with a long vowel in some dialects ;)
Great explanation, but I have a few comments: 1. It is worth mentioning that in Norwegian the letter Q is usually only found in English loanwords and some names. It is also most often followed by the letter u, as in the word quiz (mentioned in the video) or the name Quisling. In Norwegian the two letters qu- together are usually pronounced as kv - just as in the word "kveld" (evening). Thus you get the pronunciations "kviss" (quiz) and "Kvissling" (Quisling). Some words have also been given a Norwegian form of spelling, as in the words "kvikk" (quick) and "kvote" (quota). 2. Also, I don't think I've ever heard Norwegians pronounce the Z as voiced in Norwegian, which you (the speaker in this video - sorry, I don't know your name) do in the word Zambia. I've only ever heard it pronounced as S, which is also how we (and you) pronounce the letter when we say it as part of the alphabet: "sett". The Norwegian language doesn't actually distinguish between voiced/voiceless Z/S, which I guess is why the (English) word zebra is written "sebra" in Norwegian, and the given name of Queen Elizabeth II is pronounced "Elisabett". 3. Finally, although you pronounce the R as a trill, many Norwegians (including myself) pronounce the R as in the French/German R. In these cases, the rs-cluster is pronounced as a regular R+S sound.

Being Norwegian I am impressed! One small mistake though: The letter Z is pronounced "sett" in the alphabet, and just like the letter S in words. We don`t have the English z-sound, just an s-sound. That is why this letter is never used in original Norwegian words; there is no difference between the pronounciations of S and Z in our language, so there is no need for the Z. My guess is that the Z has made its way to our alphabet because it is common in other languages, just like the Q and the W.

The voiced z found in English is non-existent in Norwegian phonology, so it is not lazyness: it simply does not exist and should be pronounced voiceless /s/.
I am a native Serbian speaker, and pronouncing these sounds and words doesn't seem very difficult because in my alphabet there are also some sounds that are difficult to pronounce and very different than in English. Also , the letters like A, B, E, R... sound the same as in Serbian when they are said in a word. You see, in English, they pronounce the letter A like ae , but in Serbian the letter A is pronounced the same as in Norsk. I like that 😀

I am a native Serbian speaker, and pronouncing these sounds and words doesn't seem very difficult because in my alphabet there are also some sounds that are difficult to pronounce and very different than in English. Also , the letters like A, B, E, R... sound the same as in Serbian when they are said in a word. You see, in English, they pronounce the letter A like ae , but in Serbian the letter A is pronounced the same as in Norsk. I like that 😀

@@danielpascalp I can say the same thing as an English speaker: our language makes no sense. Can someone explain why more than one foot is feet, or how goose is geese, but mouse is mice, and house is houses, and moose... is just moose, and sheep is also just sheep. Words also have too many meanings, as this is a correct sentence: will Will Smith smith Will Smith? Yes, Will Smith will smith Will Smith.

WOW/ THE BASIC ALPHABET SOUNDS AS THE CZECH ONE INCL THE SHORT/LONG VOWELS , In Czech we have 11 somewhat (eg ř,ů) funky letters though
