If your fireplace has that white film on the glass, it is easy to clean it off with a razor blade and glass cleaner. Razor blades from Amazon -

I was told by the natural gas provider to remove the glass and wash the windex off the glass using soapy water. He said it's very dangerous to use ammonia on the glass fireplace. There is a white cream specifically for fireplace glass, but he as the sure if the glass stovetop cleaner will work. I think I'll use vinegar and water.

All other videos say to never use ammonia based glass cleaner. It's what causes the white haze.

I will mention that our model just had clamps on the right side, and swung open to the left. That might be good to mention to others:)

Adding some tips from my experience.
    1. Care to be taken when removing the glass cover. The spring loaded clips in the lower area could trap your hand when released. Wear a thick glove when releasing the clips.
    2. Misty layer on the inside of the glass would need a blade and also a rubbing using a piece of damp tamarind or tamarind paste, and finally glass cleaner to fully clear.

I just wanted to thank you for posting this. Our fireplace glass was horrible. Our fireplace is a Lennox instead of a majestic, but the basic method of disassembling it was the same, I just followed your directions. I used glass stove top cleaner instead of a razor blade to get off the milky color, and then windex, and then distilled water, with great results. I think next time I will look for the appropriate cleaner from home depot, thanks to Mack Grants suggestion.

So incredibly easy! My clamps were on the right side, but as I knew what to look for it wasn’t an issue. I also cleaned the glass with lemon oil, as it’s much quicker than a razor blade with build-up ( make certain it’s fully dry before use).

What is not mentioned here is the glass is a ceramic glass and CANNOT be cleaned with products containing ammonia. If the white haze is left for long times it becomes extremely had to remove and you will not get it all off. Never tried a razor blade before but I have tried every cleaner for fireplaces known to man and NONE will make it 100%

Just did this today. Cleaned the glass with soapy water, then baking soda and vinegar.
Replacing the glass was tricky, After putting the glass back on the top hinge, had to press pretty firmly to get the bottom over the lip so the clips would go back on. Just something to mention. It`ll be easier next time now that we know it has to be pressed firm.

It could be as simple as an air shudder adjustment, but some of the older DSI (Direct Spark Ignition) fireplaces had recalls where the box itself wasn't totally sealed. Additionally, there could be a disconnect in the co-axial flue (a pipe within a pipe, in this case 5" inner and 8" outer flue) that direct vent fireplaces use. If there is a any gap through the flue between inner and outer pipes exhaust (5" inner pipe) can syphon into the intake (between the 5" inner and 8" outer pipe) causing a low blue flame.
Is it ghosting. Like is the flame pulling off the burner?

Cleaning the glass with a razor blade can etch the glass, potentially voiding any warranty on the glass if it were to break. I understand it works, but make sure you spray glass cleaner on it thoroughly to lubricate, hold at a shallow angle, use a clean blade, make sure it is cooled completely and know what type of glass you are cleaning. The older direct vent fireplace in this video uses Tempered glass, while most newer direct vent fireplaces utilize ceramic glass. Take care to read your owners manual carefully when it comes to what you should use. to clean it The safest thing if you are a homeowner is to just use is an ammonia free glass cleaner (I like Sprayway) and clean paper towels.
Regardless, you should always have your fireplace inspected and maintained annually (as with any gas appliance) by an NFI Certified Technician. Always keep in mind that these most fixed glass panel fireplaces are direct vent heater rated gas appliances, much like a boiler. Would you service your boiler yourself? How about one in your living room with your family around it every night. Everyone makes choices...
Do yourself a favor and call your local NFI Certified Gas Fireplace Service company. If they are a reputable company they will know what to come clean and inspect.
    Most importantly, be safe.

I have this exact same Majestic fireplace. Unfortunately we cannot use the fireplace for more than 30 minutes at a time as it gives off a strange smell. We had the gas company check it out and no issues with gas, so it is safe. I've cleaned it several times, taking out the stones to see if that was it. Cleaning glass, getting dust out. No luck. Same odd smell. It's not gas but a bit nauseating. Any ideas what it could be? Thank you.

    • @TomahawkDIY
      @TomahawkDIY  8 років тому +1

+George Johns I'd probably try calling the manufacturer to see if they have a help line. One thought - is it a newer fireplace that has not run much? If so, maybe check the installation manual to see if there are instructions for starting initially. Perhaps it's supposed to "burn" for a few hours to start and clean of any residuals from the manufacturer process.

I cleaned my for the first time after watching this after 15 years. I'm not sure if it's normal but I noticed there is a switch to adjust it from high to low but the flame never really changes when you turn this. The log is lit but it won't make a big flame like a wood fireplace. Is this normal for these fireplaces. It's on. Do these type of fireplaces need annual cleaning. I'm selling my home I had a inspector mention to me he wanted me to get the chimney cleaned. People that did this told me mines isn't connected to a chimney

You do not know what you are doing!! If you are going to scrape glass with a razor blade, the blade better be new, and the glass WET; ideally with something like a drop or two of dish soap in a cup of water is all that is needed. Professional window cleaners use a wide flexible blade designed specifically for the purpose. With the glass reasonably clean, use 4 ought (0000) steel wool dry to polish the surface to the extent that it can be. Windex and other glass cleaners use to have phosphates in them. Great for REMOVING dirt, and leaving a dirt-attracting residue. This will often get concentrated in the pores of the glass, and heat from a FIRE or sunlight acts as a catalyst literally etching the glass surface. Clean, undamaged glass will allow a soft, clean cloth to glide right over it.

This should be titled "How to take the glass off of your majestic fireplace". This tells me. Othing about how to actually clean the white film on my gas wood stove. Please retitle.

We must have an OLDER Majestic than you. No clips at the bottom after other pieces are removed. Frustrating. Looks like like nuts on a screw and I have to find a small wrench to unbolt the glass door. Why would anyone design a door this cumbersome? Back to the fix. Later.

What a joke! Spend 3 minutes taking the glass off and 30 seconds showing it cleaned already. Change the title of the video.
