  • If your glass on your gas fireplace needs cleaning this video will show you how to remove and clean the glass on your fireplace. A viewer gave me some additional awesome tips.
1.) You have to turn off the gas pilot light, and the gas VALVE. The valve is red. You may also have a 2nd gas valve, outside of the fireplace, on a nearby wall.
2.) Use ammonia or Windex to clean the glass. UPDATE that I learned: Avoid using newspaper, because many publications use leaking ink, that can lead to glass smear. Newspaper tech, and materials have changed in the decades since Grandma gave the newspaper advice, and pros don’t use newspaper.
3.) Clean the glass with diluted Dawn dish soap, because it has wetting agents that allow cleaning agents to stay on the glass long enough to “work”.
4.) If there is grease or other fatty substances on the glass, use ammonia, and water. The ratio is 1 part ammonia to 16 parts water, or 1 cup ammonia to 1 gallon water. Let sit for 2 minutes, then rinse well, because ammonia, and gas do not mix.
5.) If there is limescale, or other mineral build up, use Dergol Build Up remover, made in Switzerland, available in the US. Rinse well.
6.) Consider using the final rinse with distilled water, to avoid mineral streaks, especially if you do not have a water softening system in your home.
7.) A soft microfiber cloth should be used (90% polyester, 10% polyamide), or cotton terry towel, which is more abrasive than microfiber.
8.) At all costs, avoid “Magic Erasers”, and scrub sponges, as they cause micro abrasions in the glass, which can lead to permanent etching, and damage.
9.) Dry well, and once completely dry, dust the glass. Why? Because even small particles can be flammable, or cause micro lint to be on the glass, after it is dried.
10.) You may wish to use a squeegee on the glass, but don’t forget to line your finger in a cloth, and “edge” the glass, at it’s perimeter, and other inconspicuous areas, and edges.
11.) Inspect for damage, before and after cleaning, because small cracks can lead to carbon monoxide leakage, and be dangerous to your personal health.
12.) Allow the glass to dry further, while you vacuum the underside of the fireplace. It collects dust, spiderwebs, and the wayward Lego.
13.) Reinstall the glass. You are a superhero, saved money doing this yourself, and can happily and safely enjoy your beautiful fireplace.

Do you not have to clean the burner or any of that? I have low flame and a couple of weeks ago it was very good flame.

When you turn the pilot back switch back on, do you turn it to pilot, or on? I just bought a home with a gas fireplace, so I have no experience. My old home had a wood burning fireplace.

I recently removed my glass, cleaned and reinstalled. I will say, I didn’t turn the gas’s off. Unfortunately I can light the Pilot but the unit will not come on when I turn it on. Previously to cleaning everything worked fine. Any tips?

Thank you sir. If spark igniter is busted, it cost too much to replace. It is used only once per season to ignite the pilot. If one uses a long match stick to ignite the pilot its the cheapest and fastest solution. Try at own risk.

@@FROSTYLIFE Mr. Frosty Life: Thank you, you are amazing! Thank you for taking these tips with good intensions. Here's another tip when the weather warms up, that I learned from a power washing company: In the final rinse, use Jet Dry or Finish, especially for windows that aren't hand washed / squeegeed. It helps reduce water streaks. Water softening systems are installed inside the home, and bypasses outside hoses, typically. Much love, and blessings from NY.
