I feel like most cashiers wouldn't mind some small talk and might even enjoy it. At the very least, there's nothing wrong with trying it out, and if they seem annoyed, you stop. And if you can't tell, then it's kind of on them for not giving any indication. Nobody is forcing them to be that friendly.
The world would truly be better if it would be quiet. I by preference since I was born liked to shut up. I reserve my words until they are needed and i try to communicate most efficiently, ive been told i sound like a robot, emotionless, cold, monotone whatever… everything else is extra to me. It freaks people out, they always ask me if im fine, why i don’t make conversation, laugh at their jokes, to the point that if I accidentally crack a smile or giggle at a random thought and someone that knows me walks by they will not ask, they will request to know what is the thing that made me break this silence of sound or expression. They will persist, even if you look at them confused and shrug it off. It’s actually bizarre. This one girl kept begging me to tell her why I giggled and I gave her disturbing reason so she could stop bothering me and it didn’t work. I think silence holds a lot of power, people automatically assume you are humble (not me) or intelligent. Silence is leverage. But honestly I think simple unique one liners are best for interacting with people, out of all the yappers, greeters and people holding me hostage to their words, the only one I think fondly of is a lady who told me “have a beautiful day”, because it broke away from the default meaningless garbage “nice/good/great day”. When she said it, it felt sincere and powerful, like she meant it, also who else uses beautiful day? Because everyone else is following a default structure for the mask of kindness, truly insincere. Say something special or nothing at all. I don’t want to get asked how my day was, you don’t care.
