CEO: "It had to be done. I need money for my 3rd yacht."
Nah. It's a mega yacht.
And it's not even a real yacht lol it's the one from gta online
5th* yacht
Third more like fifteenth yacht
What self respecting CEO would want a yacht without gold toilets & two helipads?
I did the math. You could’ve paid 960 employees 75k for a year for the bonus he just gave himself 72m/75k = 960
It’s truly disgusting 🤢
That's not how it works. There are tons of other things the company pays for. Social security, Medicare, medical plans, etc. It's still horse shit but the number is definitely way less. I wouldn't be surprised if it's in line with how many were laid off though lol
Keep in mind there are payroll taxes, 401k matching, medical insurance, travel perks, etc that factor into the individual 'price' of an employee, so your estimate is materially wrong. That said, your point that these layoffs could have been mitigated in lieu of paying the CEO a $72 m is spot on.
but but but what about the yatcht the hookers, and the Cocaina dude!!?? 😂😂
@@luism8130 bait used to be believable
Triple A gaming industry acts like it's financially hurting when majority of the time it's just greed not them being in any real danger.
Greed is like the #1 reason why most things succ. Someone wants more than they need and it causes an imbalance all for the pursuit of profits.
The industry just follows the demand. If mouth breathers are spending thousands on a shitty game through microtransactions, why would the companies care at all? The way you people talk about AAA gaming, it's like you genuinely think they are just bullies. They are a business like anyone else, consumerism is driven by the consumer, not the producer. Stop buying every little nerd toy and dipshit video game when it comes out. And maybe the industry will realize they can't sustain their business at that rate. Or you can just keep buying games for $70 that aren't even complete, and then spend another $10000 on in game bullshit no one cares about. And then cry about the state of the industry...

the downfall of mankind ---> corporate greed
Always has been. The destiny of our destruction have been the greedy and overly ambitious since the beginning of time. They own everything and we work for them in their world just to buy the things they force us to make for ourselves. Congratulations you're a slave
Well, it has been said that the love of money is the root of all evil.
There is a solution. Refuse to purchase the game in the first 6 months. But that would almost be like a hardship and you're willing to complain but you're not actually willing to do anything about it are you?
not corporate greed, just greed.
Shouldn't the phrases be reversed with corporate greed leading tot he downfall of mankind?
People like this are the real criminals in my eyes. Leaving hundreds jobless so that you can make more money is insane especially when you’re about to make billions….nasty work

In fact, studies show that people in CEO positions tend to have higher than average psychopathy, because it's precisely a lack of empathy that is required to be able to treat people like disposable resources without any moral conscience.
Remember what Nintendo did during Wii u era? The late CEO, Iwata decided to cut his own salary to avoid layoffs. More time goes more I respect him more.
Unfortunately, there's no honor among corpos these days.
Iwata was a shining example of a CEO that truely cared about his workforce. He accepted the wii u did not perform like they expected and cut his own salary so his staff could still have a job.
These days these companies just couldn't care less about their staff and this crap needs to change
Think I saw another comment here stating that that was more of a policy or law in Japan which prevented mass layoffs. In other words, he had to do it whether he wanted to or not.
And then he died! We yet live to feast upon the flesh of the living!

In the 1960’s, CEO’s used to make 20 times what average employees made. Now, they make well over 300 times more for most publicly traded corporations.

Ridiculous.
It's insane. The CEO will take 99% of the money a game makes. Not to mention the ridiculous amount they spend on graphics, and hiring consultants like SBI. No wonder it's so expensive, they're wasting so much money!

Pretty much any time in America you ask "Why doesn't this work?" "Why is this so fucked up?" or "Why did this happen?" the answer is pure and absolute unchecked greed. Usually of the corporate variety.
The sad part is that it’s not even just a video game industry problem. Much of our current financial systems are built on the promise of growth. You always have to be growing as much or more than you were before. Otherwise investors jump ship and you’re fucked. It’s such a toxic system and incentivizes “restructuring” of the company to meet profit goals. And then the people at the top get rewarded with bonuses while the people towards the bottom rarely see much of anything at all
It's wild.
People categorically don't need that much money.

And then these clown fucks who by and large do no work, share no passions and have no good intentions just *give themselves* tens of millions in BONUSES. That is ON TOP of badly inflated pay.
Gross. Discarding the hard working people who need the income, who want to have a nice CV full of their hard work. This should be illegal. That is the only way I can see of stopping this, is "You do this shit, you get ten years in prison. Per affected employee".

@@scarletcroc3821 Don't worry, the system will be forced to change in coming decades because it won't be sustainable in most places across the globe, especially as populations die out in most lucrative markets. Corporations will simply be unable to grow there as there will be less people around to buy stuff, and corporations jumping onto the "AI" money train will be the first to be hit at some point. You can't sell you stuff and/or services if the customers can't afford to buy. And the US of A is a bright example, where the society get drained more and more with every year, people becoming objectively poorer than they were the year before and being forced to work multiple jobs to stay afloat. It simply can't go on forever, either the economy will crash or people will tear the system down. Probably a mix of both.
Problem is the judicial system decided in 1919 that a public company is legally obligated to be greedy "Ford Motor Co. Dodge v. Ford Motor Co., 204 Mich 459; 170 NW 668 (1919), is a case in which the Michigan Supreme Court held that Henry Ford had to operate the Ford Motor Company in the interests of its shareholders, rather than in a manner for the benefit of his employees or customers."
But this is completely not the case here where layoffs are needed. Companies are usually losing money in this case they are not. This has nothing to do with actual layoffs
This is like when companies complain that they can't find any people to work for them while refusing to actually interview and hire said people.
Not to mention all the ghost jobs as well man.
I see Amazon consistently with hiring ads I tried working for them they rejected my application… I have an outstanding resume. They never do. Endless raises. When they do something unforgivable, they "leave to pursue other interests/time with family" with overly generous packages and a nice invite to another "job" shortly after.

So the bonus given to the CEO, was basically equivelant to the combined yearly salary of 600 employees...nuts!
The biggest problem with the corporate capitalist model is that companies want constant growth month after month year after year but the problem eventually is that you hit a plateau and instead of being content with making the same money they will fire people and cancel programs/ projects and make who’s left work harder to increase the stock value.
Also remember a CEOs job is to make money for the shareholders of that company not to care for the workers even though it’s been proven that if you take care of your employees that company will make more money…
But the American corporate model comes from ford vs dodge. To make it simple and quick Ford wanted to lower the price of his cars some and increase the pay of his workers hoping they and others would buy more of his cars but the Dodge brothers who had worked for him and were then shareholders sued and ford lost the ruling was that a company should only make money for the shareholders and basically forget the employee

I just don't understand why shareholders and investors let CEOs take home so much money. What the hell are they doing that's so instrumental to making games that warrants millions of dollars? Telling devs to work harder? Marketing? Setting deadlines? Adding a few more micro transactions? I would love to see the daily schedule of some of these guys.
Its business making money was the point. Do you honestly think they care about making games? No they dont.
Becuase the ceo is doing his job? That's why he's there. To make the shareholders happy
Modern stockmarkets work on the principle of quarterly profits, not long term profits. Shareholders buy and sell shares at the drop of a hat. As such, it doesn't matter to them if a company tanks the next day since they've already moved on to another.
If there were two separate stockmarkets, one for short term profits and another for long term profits, and a company could only list to one of them, we'd see very different results.
Because shareholders want profit and if you don't pay the CEO big bucks for that profit someone else will.

Before 2007 and iphone(candy crush) : games were made by a bunch of talented, skilled, passionate devs, who were also gamers, and wanted to make all the games they wanted, without any restrictions. A time when games were made around fun, joy, standard couch co-op, tons of free stuff.
After 2007 : the venture/ capital/hedge guys approached studios, with their suitcases filled with trillions, followed by hoards of shareholders.
Suddenly, those shareholders, who hate video games, don't play video games, don't understand videogames, were attending those important meetings, and were saying 'the game must be smaller..'.. "let's make 3 main characters instead of 7"..."let's make 15 dungeons instead of 70"... etc etc etc.

My experience is the CEO is the hardest working person in a company. Phone always on. No time is not a good time to call. It's not like TV and movies where they just say stupid things at a big table where idiots nod. Most people couldn't do the job. Not saying Take two is this case but you painted everyone with the same brush.
Arrowhead CEO is pretty cool, he even plays his own games!
Said this multiple times in other videos and creators. The gaming industry is in the worst shape it’s ever been. I’m 38 and started on the NES. Gaming was a hobby most didn’t understand and games were pumped out for enjoyment and to explore fantasy, storytelling or just to escape the day to day stresses of life. Games have turned into a casino where it’s max profits over everything else. Game isn’t done? Start a fundraiser. Game needs more development time? Release it and call it early access. Extend profits after the game is finished? Throw microtransactions and a battle pass. It’s pathetic
And yet people will still buy their games like hot cakes and basically supporting this behavior.
Yep, gamers don't have standards and don't know how to not buy a hyped game wthout being impulsed to do so
Thank you for saying it. That's why I am not angry at all. People will still buy GTA6 and their microtransaction BS when it comes out. I'm just waiting for monster hunter wilds and nothing else
I am so, sooooo grateful, i never pursued a career in game development.
What a despicable industry.
Any companies/CEOs that fire or close locations en masse then immediately turn around to a massive bonus or salary increase should be illegal. Like actual laws need to be in place to protect against that.
Probably some bullshit rule out there created by conservatives that make that impossible. Like its infringing on their rights to make as much money as possible no mater the detriment it has on others. I guess that's a right to someone.
Or let's take it further and say that no mass lay-offs are allowed for cost-cutting reasons if the company is well profitable.
This is quite a volatile and unstable industry.
You have out of touch executives, senseless and talentless upper management, deceptive marketing and public relations, and developers who remain are not competent because many useful developers are forced out of the industry.
What remains are horrid games, annoyed consumers and an industry running into the arms of greed.
Well said! Where is the speculate to accumulate? I hate these so-called investors! We have everyone from Mr. We Believe in Third-Party Partners stating he was having to make tough decisions that he has essentially been making since 2012. It is shocking quite how many billionaires are getting richer and less people are getting employed! If their CEO was all about the games he would take a 72nd of his bonus from a single year, then none of these development teams at Take Two would have to be sacked at all! SHOCKING!
CEO: I’m already caked up Don’t give a FUCK !!!!
The problem is the corporate structure itself. The CEO ultimately controls how much people are paid, so any self-serving individual would obviously increase their pay regardless of other considerations.
The problem is the concept of public shareholders, these don't care about good products or the people creating the products, they only care to have their shares price increased so they can get some profit, next one buying the shares the same, more growth to get some profit.
Do you think they care how the profit is made when they sell? Cut the costs with firing people so it looks good in the quarterly reports to have an extra plus at shares price, ok for them.
No. The board of directors decides how much the CEO is worth.
Ever since that guy started the movement to stop companies from killing games, people have been sharing it across the world and I helped. I’m glad big UA-camrs are talking about it after a few weeks
New Laws, if you lays off more than 2% of your work force, CEOs cant get bonuses
Yeah, but that's GOVERNMENT interfering with obscene Corporate Profits. Can't have that! 🤑
Nah go further.
All top management positions must reduce their pay by up to 90% before layoffs occur, no bonuses may be given to them, no stock options given.

I and a bunch of others made the investment to create and fund the company. We hired ourselves and worked our asses off to create something valuable.
We are all engineers and artists though, so when we started to get our shit together, we (as stockholders) took the decision to hire a proper CEO to run the company.
Many years later, the company has grown a lot under the leadership of the CEO that we hired. Sure, he has had to fire people when the market cooled down for a while, but overall he has done a great job.
The company belongs to us stockholders, not the regular employees.

This industry is so short sighted and creatively bankrupt in the AAA space. What kid in school is looking at this industry and thinking ‘Damn, I want to be a part of that!’. Ehh, working on GTA looks hella good on a resume. It always sucks to lose a job. Just saying you don't hear many stories of these guys being stuck in entry level positions for years on end because they were fired out of their big break in game development.
This is why Larian is a Unicorn amongst video game developers
They done fucked it up!!!

How can u lay people off because ur company isnt doing aswell as u predicted. Yet still give the CEO a bonus....a bonus for what?? Failing at there job?? What a joke capitalism has become. Resist! Anyway you can! Well done for shining a light on this joe 👍

Failing upward. It's what makes it easier to get richer when you are already rich.
@@kylebatteson9572 Because T2 are poised to make all the money when the next GTA comes out but investors want ALL THE MONEY RIGHT NOW!
It seems to me there are at least 2 things going on here. 1 the AAA industry is super bloated. 2 the video game execs are ridiculously over paid. this firing actually helps with the first problem. However the second problem is a result of you people buying AAA games.
Capitalism's goals have always been the same.
Fiduciary responsibilities are so terrible. They’re literally running companies into the ground since they prioritize money over quality products.
And yet no one will do anything about it. People will still apply for jobs there, people will still buy their products (as you pointed out in the beginning), etc.
It’s sad and frustrating but until people vote with their money, these companies will continue to do what they want at the dev’s and consumer’s expense.
ACTUALLY JUST WOW. You know what kills me is that soooo many damn ppl out there will continue to buy products from companies that do this shit which says it’s ok. SOME OF THEM will also go online and be like “😱 omg I can’t believe they’d do this!” Gtfoh. This is so gross
Virtue signaling much? You going to boycott the game or make a GoFundMe for the poor devs? Ya I didn't think so.
@@sentaiz1329 Yes, I am actually going to boycott Take2 and their shitty games. Not that it will make a difference with all of the trained rats whipping out their credit cards the moment GTA6 drops, but so be it.
Take2 and Herr Strauss Zelnick are dead to me.
GTA is literally too big for any boycott. Most people will never know about the game dev layoffs or anything the company does. A boycott is pointless when you're the only one participating, and even if more people join you, the amount of money they save by firing people is still more than what they lose from the unsold games.
I honestly don't know if there is any kind of solution to this. If you don't buy the games more people will be fired, if you buy the games the same people might still get fired.
@@KiraNightV You're not wrong. The reason I won't touch another TT game while it's run by current management isn't that I in any way expect it to have an effect, I'm not that naive, it's more a matter of principle, much like I refuse to buy products from companies running sweat shops in the third world. I won't stop them, but at least I won't be rewarding them either. And, seriously, it's not like it's a huge sacrifice for me to NOT, say, play Shark Card Salesman VI.
To each their own.
The use of AI is what everyone thought about self checkout. Jobs being eliminated.
You know something is REALLY wrong when Angry Joe gets news out before guys like YongYea or Upper Echelon Gamers.
What's messed up about these greedy CEO types is that they don't even need all that money. Even if they're living rich.
Even after the mansion landscaping and the yacht maintenance and the designer drugs and the fancy cars and gambling on crypto, they will never spend all this money, it just makes them feel good that the number goes up on their bank account.
just like GTA
There's a great quote from Margin Call: "you learn to spend what's in your pocket." The amount of wealth they have is unfathomable to us, but to them, they look at the next tier of wealth and see even more things they can't comfortably afford. That's the thing about greed and vanity, they're insatiable.
I've talked about this before. But Game Dev positions are temporary. The game development cycle is reminiscent of movies, yet they don't use outside companies to provide what they need when they need it. So where as they only bring in lightning teams, or sound teams, or CGI teams, or costume designers, or armorers when you need them and then they'd be done... you keep every dev from start to finish on a game. Which always results in bloat. It's a bad look to pay the CEO more, but genuinely this is just a common occurance in all game dev companies.
To paraphrase Fallout: Greed...greed never changes...

I hope all those dev can find work or come together to make their own studios.
Sounds like the solution to this type of stuff is to just stop buying games published by them at this point. Let the company fall.
No, no it's not. The company is literally making billions without releasing a game for 10 years. Most people will never know about the layoffs. If everyone in the world was magically aware of what's happening, they still wouldn't boycott. Because why would they? People get fired whether or not the game they're making sells well. The ones who have been fired won't be helped by the boycott either.
Nothing will change until there's a governmental intervention against companies.
But the government is busy protecting game journalists from "extremist" gamers who don't want to play the shitty games that they're pandering.
How....how are people still surprised by this kind of corporate behaviour? This is the corporate standard now. Want to get rid off it? Make sure those companies go away....stop buying their products. Want to save the gaming industry? Replace "triple A" with Indië.
The increase they received is $42 million. That is 580 people multiplied by $72,000 per year average. It sounds like their increase in pay literally came from the people fired.
So sad. But also, why would anybody believe a word out of these corporate mouths?
I don't understand how anyone could defend this. I fully understand that some of these developers or all of the developers that got fired probably didn't pull their weight as devs and that is understandable. But increasing this CEO's pay to 72 MILLION?! Holy fuck!
"Ah yes, we are doing bad in profits. Let's reward the person who is steering the ship for our bad performance!" I have zero clue on how the board that is above the CEO is allowing this. I would pay him less because he is losing the company profits.
HAaa but thats the fun part, who you think gets paid the most? The board!!!
They didn't increase his pay. A CEO would likely be salary incentived. (No matter how many hrs worked=same pay)
After he padded the numbers, they reward his hard work from home/remote for checking spreadsheets.
This is literally happening EVERYWHERE. This is NOT UNIQUE to gaming industry. The company I work at, USAA, started as a coop (a dream company type for an employee) has laid off thousands of employees while the CEO has doubled his salary for the past 4 years in a row since he became CEO
but joe , the ceo needs to buy another superyacht!
