I can confirm that copper does help with algae! I used it in two fountains last summer and not a bit of algae in the one....didn't use enough copper in the larger fountain.

Copper pipe comes with a coating on it, so you'll have to take a torch to it to burn it off. Most big box stores sell them as culinary butane torches, or maybe in the camping aisle.
