I'm a single mom with zero men in my life and your videos make providing for my family so clear and simple! I wish you had a handy man house maintenance channel as well! ❤️
My son and I made ours today and it was crazy easy! And inexpensive, as you mentioned. The only thing we did differently was hook it up to our downspout. I got that converter on Amazon as well as the kit and garbage pail. The whole thing cost about 50$ (the kit came with 2 sets) and maybe all of 45 minutes, mostly because of the downspout attachment. If we hadn't done that, 30 mins with me learning how to do it all! Thanks
great DIY project, i have a few older garbage bins that i use for harvesting rain water, but haven't added the spigots. This motivated me to do so! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks a ton. I just picked up two spigot adapters from Home Hardware for around 18.99 CAD each. Teflon tape was $0.99c and the bit was $6. Nice to save buying 2 new barrels for $250+, and spend less than $50 to convert two old unused bins.
I live in a Caravan which has a 2nd paradise roof on it, which is angled slightly, I am thinking about doing something like this, this way I have fresh rainwater, to collect for drinking purposes, this has motivated me in doing something like this, I was thinking along these lines, but wasn't sure how to set it up, but I will be putting a little gutter system on the paradise roof, and putting a little down pipe on it to collect the rain water, Also too I would be using the same principle for my trailer, which sits besides the van, and so items don't get wet, I would be doing the same thing there as well, so I would have 2 container's collecting the rainwater for drinking...and washing dishes. Thank-you for you video in showing an idea which I was playing with a BIG THANK-YOU !!!!
Very well-made video. Gonna do this for sure! Before I saw this I was thinking of buying a rain barrel but they can be pricey. I thought - why not a garbage can? I make homemade wine in 5 gallon buckets and the spigots are used there, too and they are sooo easy to install! One word of caution about drilling holes into plastic - go slow and let the drill/bit do the work. Excess pressure can easily crack the plastic and ruin an entire bucket or garbage can!
Thank you for the video. I have a valley roof on one side of the house and with all the rain and snow in California I got out a large trash can but it filled up. I was able to siphon it out, thanks to videos on the rules of siphoning. The spigot came in today but can't find my 1 3/8" hole saw so out to the hardware store.
I've been considering a water catchment system, NOW that you provided such a great video and simplification!!, I know I will be checking out your compost tea maker idea as well. Thanks this will be of such help!
Thinking* of using your idea but attaching a drip hose in order to water plants in a 20 ft. strip. I think I can get enough gravity push to do the job. I could even plug up some of the holes to keep the water flowing. In fact if I put the hole high enough I can aid the gravity. In addition, my downspout is presently directing water to the side of my house and is making a muddy mess. So if this works, two problems will be solved! Thanks for getting my thinking going.
Thanks very helpful. I planning setting up couple but like to use my gutter down spout collect in spring summer and fall. Then close up winter Thanks really appreciate
Hi thanks for the video! Do you remember what kind of rubbermaid trash can you used? Is this a brute or a roughneck? Just wondering about the durability you've experienced with this.
Drill a hole into the lid and fit it with a metal mesh drain cover, then flip the lid upside down to sit on top of the barrel. This will help keep debris out of your collected rain water. Place the barrel under your downspout for faster water collection.
How many gallons is the barrel? Is 32 gallons big enough? How big is the hole you drilled in the barrel? What size hole bit did you use? Can I use just a drill bit then make it bigger with a knife?
In a survival situation yes, but in general the plastics in garbage cans isn't food grade so it can leach chemicals into the water. The same idea could be applied to a food grade container for drinking water though!
The video is great except - how does the rainwater get in? If you have the lid on it? In my area mosquitos are an issue so I'd want a lid but then I'm back to how to get the rainwater inside?
@@debrawilliams-buss4694 seems odd that he did not show how to connect to a downspout. Last nite I got 2 measly inches of rain in a wheelbarrow out in the back yard, but filled three 32 gal trash cans from the roof gutter-downspout; that is where to collect rainwater from.
I have a garbage can with wheels (the kind that trash companies rent out) and I hit it and the rubber tire came off the rim - how do I get it back on? Its very heavy and tight? Thanks. Half is on one side of the rim and half on the other.
This might be a dumb question: The kit is 3/4 inches, but your materials list has a 1 3/8" hole saw. I already have a 1 1/4" hole saw. Will that fit the kit you linked to?
Do you know where one can buy this heavy duty Rubbermaid trash can? I have searched the internet extensively and cannot find another "Rubbermaid Bruiser" model trash can (with wheels and lid that clamps shut) - which is what the trash can in this video looks to be. I have found a few places that appear to list this model trash can but in reality it is not in stock. I would love to find a couple more Rubbermaid Bruiser cans. I think rubbermaid may have discontinued the model and now they have something similar, without wheels, called a Rubbermaid Animal Stopper but that is hard to find also.

I love how thorough you are when you lay out what is needed, and then the steps to complete the project. 👍👍
I appreciate the feedback. Cheers!
Me too !!
@@plantabundancei want that Steel trash can lid😊😊.
This is a project I will get started right away. Thank you for making it so easy!
You are so welcome!

thats easy enough thanx,,,every1 should be growing their own foods & medicinal plants and collecting water :)
Yes, you are right

Thank you! I appreciate the feedback. All the best!
Was looking into rain barrels for the first time a few weeks ago. This is a great idea to keep in mind. Cool!

Thank you so much I’ve been watering my plants by bucket you helped me out a lot

How about a follow up video where the barrel not only catches rain, but has built-in filtration. That'd be cool.

Hi Dan, very clever idea, question, where did you buy the rain barrel adapter for connecting the water hose, it’s cheap $12.00 bucks? Thanks 🙏👏

Great video! I just subscribed to your channel. I’m looking forward to learning more. I can tell you have a lot of knowledge to share! 🎉
This is fantastic!! Subscribed, and thank you so much!
Thank you for sharing this it showed me how easy it is to do. ❤

did this work? I'm thinking about trying the same thing
thanks for making this video. it looks easy to follow so ordered kit to convert trash can. thanks!!
Great video. Miss your presence. Praying for you.

Man u just saved me some money. I subscribed also. Thanks my guy
gracias por sus consejos
De nada
Where did you gegt your rain barrel spigot kit?
Love it I will try this out
Cheers!
Great video!
Thanks for the visit
Wow!
Love this video!!
I’ve also used a can to make a composter. Also placed a garbage can under the downspout
Just be aware of all the chemicals that the rain rinses off of your roof if it's asphalt.
Great idea and video going to do this!

Excellent video!!! Would this method work for drinking water?

A video about. Chocolate Berry's plant's thank you I like your video's your video's are very good.
The video is great except - how does the rainwater get in? If you have the lid on it? In my area mosquitos are an issue so I'd want a lid but then I'm back to how to get the rainwater inside?
Maybe cut a hole in lid attach a screen? Or maybe connected to a downspout thru the lid?

Will this also work for ponds and attach PVC to it? either way you just got a new sub
Would I be able to hook up my sprayer? Will it mist my plants is what I’m asking.
Another great video. What size/brand of garbage can do you recommend?
How are you managing overflow?
He’s not.
Nice
Wow that trash can looks SO PRETTY next to that water feature!

What tool do you attach to drill to make a hole in the garbage can?
Is there a reason you wouldn't drill the hole all the way at the bottom?
How has the trash can held up over time?
So just leave the top off and collect water? So simple. How do you prevent other things from getting in?
I saw on another video,a sheet or screen
How do you collect the rainwater, leave the lid off? I guess you would have to put a screen on top, maybe I am missing something??
No, you will need to build a collection system. Most houses have one set up already (your roof). Just needs to be diverted into the barrel

A video about water berry vr java plam- your video are Very informative. Sory my English is verry poor.
How do you keep misquo out?

It’s called “Brute”
Cool! What power drill did you use?
It's a Ryobi 18v for sure. P215BN would be my guess, but the plastic of a garbage bin is thin enough most any drill should work!
👍
Is it safe to use trash can to store the water ? I am reading that storing water in none-food grade plastic can cause the water to be toxic.
Is this safe, I’ve read where some chemicals can leach out, maybe not safe for vegetables?
Did i miss the collection part?!
How do you get water in the garbage can?
When it rains!
Water hose.
To bad you cant use these in south Florida
My arms can't reach to screw in the inside
You left out the input and overflow.
This is literally illegal to do where I’m from. Isn’t that crazy!?!?
So is jaywalking...
Every state has different laws regarding water harvesting.
I am pretty sure no one could give me a reason that I cant collect the water that God sends down from the sky.
