Should replace the first barrel connector with a T in case all the barrels fill up it can spill out of the top +. You would lose some water from that end but it might save your roof in the long run lol also might want to run a pipe to the ground off it to avoid splash back on the wall. Going to build something like this in the spring as well.
Plumb small fittings at the top barrel and the very bottom barrel and run a clear see thru hose so you can tell where your water level is at all times.. Kinda like a gas gauge if you will... I like the stacking idea. I may do this and gravity feed from an old well we have here on the property that way there is a constant supply of water to my barrels.. Thanks for uploading the video.. It's very interesting, very well designed, future problem is, that the weight of water on drums, supported itself on tanks' extremes, will cause break of its. To solve it, you must put a wooden bed along each tanks ( just on the side to hold the water 's weight.
Love the idea, been wanting to set up something similar, just havent had time. Others have pointed out what i know i would do differently but wanted to put in 2 cents. I will be putting in a first flush system for sure. And i would notch/dado 2x4s between the posts so as not to rely on screws to hold all that weight. Though since its already built, i would definately put on some simpson strong ties.
Thanks for the video. My thoughts the same on the top half not being glued, only areas after the first flush. I added a first flush to mine to catch the fist load. I saw them on sale for 70-80 bucks. I simply grabbed a 4in plastic tube (about 18-20 in depending on how much trash you get in the collection area). I used a plastic 4 to 2 reducer with a screw cap on the bottom for debris removal. For the stopper I used a racket ball (2.25 in, so it works great on the 2 in.). Sorry I don’t have a pic. Basically, T pipe atop, the reducer below, the 4in storage below that and the cap at the bottom. The first flush fills up the containment area, water rises to close the opening with the racket balls and clean water continue to storage supply. Not in use yet. I expect to place this early in the collection stage and probably just after my overflow value. I’m not sure I saw one in yours. I placed an overflow value so my gutters don’t fill up and weigh down. BTW - a panty hose would work well in some cases.
1. Drill an overflow hole just above the top barrel, 2. Cover the frame to protect it from weather/UV or paint frame otherwise it will fail over time, 3. Install some kind of filter system no matter what it is used, 4. Install splitter(s) at facet for different uses like hose, dripline, etc. Fix those and I'll give you more. ha.

you should connect another pvc connected to the drain pipe with a ball at the bottom that will go up and lock at the top and redirect water to the tanks. this is so that the dirty water from rainful is directed first to this pipe before it sends water to the water tanks.
You may want to put 4 pads under 4x4 posts or maybe even half of the plywood so it does not sink into the soil . Question So far I saw barrels with 2 caps , one fine thread the other course thread , HD or Lowe’s has fine threat 2”’adapters what about the course thread or your barrels have fine thread on both sides ? Also you could save a little and use 90 instead of “T” .
What connections did you use to attach your piping directly to the barrels? Is it threaded connectors? The barrels I have have different threads on the two different holes in the barrels.
Cool project. Note, water is ~8lbs/gallon, so when full each barrel is ~400+lbs of weight. That's a pretty big load for the horizontal 4x4 boards. Did you toe-screw each horizontal 4x4 with 2 screws on the top, 2 on the bottom? Might want to consider more bracing? Eg, screw a scrap 2x4 underneath each of the 4x4's where they meet the vertical post?
Thanks for the considered feedback Nathan. It certainly wouldn't hurt to add extra bracing. It held up well so far 😀I used 3" screws, three for each joint.
I agree. Perhaps putting some 2x4 against the 4x4 to support the horizontal member. Screws shear whereas a 16 penny nail will just bend. Hopefully it holds, but it's worth looking into. Look at aquarium stands construction to get an idea.
Great system!! I like that you were able to get it off the ground to get better pressure!! That's my only limitation with the rain bench. You almost have to get a pump. Anyways great setup!!

Great work, but some major design flaws with the horizontal barrel placement. Doing research online many people do not recommend this unless you have horizontal support for the full barrel length. People have said the barrels will deform from the weight because they were designed for vertical orientation. And when they do this they will crack and break your connector pct pipes. As well we didn’t see any leaf or debris screens, overflow diverting or air vents at the top of the barrels

What about an air vent system and an overflow system? I have also been seeing systems with a first flush pipe system on it to catch the first rain that falls and cleans the debris off and then when that fills up, then you get the cleaner water in your barrels. I like the stacking method. I wish I could find a way to do this stacking build but with a first flush pipe, an air vent, and an overflow system.
This is a nice setup! I think I will be doing something similar. The only thing I can think that I might tweak on it is to be an inlet on the upper barrel on those occassion you might want to flush out all the barrels... just a thought.

Did the screws alone hold the weight of the water barrels when they are full? I'm going to build this, but I may leave the 2x4 spacers in there to help support the weight of the barrels when they are full (I have a 50'x60' roof that water is running off of, which is about 1800 gallons of water per inch of rain, so my barrels will be completely full really fast).

Without a first flush though do you get contaminants in the system? And with the full system glued up are you able to clean it? one is 2" NPT thread, the other is 2" buttress course thread. That is the two standard bung hole thread types(bung hole is the proper term for those two holes). Most all commercial drums in the 15 gal up to 55 gal use the same thread types on those two holes, as long as they are the 2" holes. Some others use a smaller hole and I'm not sure the size and thread types on those
Maybe wrong, but using T fitting and connecting them was unnecessary. If you just had 90 degree fittings the water would flow in the top hole and out the bottom hole in the barrel below and so on. Coulda saved several steps by cutting that.

As a plumber, it would be easier to put in the male adapters in first, stack your barrels then pipe the rest, pre fab the t’s and glue it all to the adapters at once… oh and use clear primer unless you have no other option
Where did you find the coarse thread adapters for the bung holes? My barrels have a coarse thread and fine thread. HD and Lowes do not have coarse thread.

This can be made with a water hose connected at the topvertical pvc tube and also has a second fuction as a over flow where most needed also a screen connected at the end this is a friendly advise like I said in the beginning there magnitud = Power
Thanks for the feedback! I’m glad you are interested. The top of the pipe is open so air comes in giving airflow. If it overflows it just runs out over the gutter. No harm done it’s on my barn 👍🏻 the rest of the barn doesn’t even have gutters at all.

I have a question about the barrels laying on there sides. I think the barrels will hold 55 gallons fine stand up. There shouldn't be an issue. Direct sunlight can degrade the lifetime of plastics. As far as lifetime, I've had two in this configuration with half day sun and have no worries after five years.
Here in my home, Baja California. We have water problems and the city is implementing a contingency plan that will make us have water supply from the state only 4 days out of the week. ...could this water storage system be applied to potable water and be able to use it on the house trough an electric water pump? (To avoid having to instal ti avobe the roof)
We used to own a passive solar home with a 10,000 gal concrete cistern in it, the original owner left documentation on a struggle they had at the time with the state of Wisconsin that prevented rainwater from being used to flush toilets etc. because it wasn’t deemed “potable”. Their workaround was to put 4 barrels up in the clerestory/attic space and he’d pump cistern (rain) water up once a week or so, and use a 5gallon bucket with a little dosing hose to draw in a chlorine/water solution that would purify the rainwater deeming it potable. We lived there 5 years and pitched the water up there once, the rest of the time we used straight rainwater to shower, laundry, do dishes, etc. without any ill effects, we did have a pre-rinse system that diverted the first 50 gallons or so to help rinse off the roof, etc. prior to it beginning to add to the cistern, which helped keep the debris in the main vessel low/non-existent. There were studies done in Jamaica and Australia that show rainwater harvesting if treated carefully as a usable source for 99% of your household needs.
One of the holes of the plastic barrels have a pipe thread and the other a course thread. How do you screw the male PVC adapter into the course thread, will it not leak. ???
I notice you didn’t add any vent hole line near the top of each barrel. I also did this dual barrel. But notice it only fill up about 75-80%. It couldn’t fully fill the bottom barrels
No, because it is gravity fed and the air flows back up through the pipes while the stream of water flows down. The rain will not flow and fill the 2" pipes completely.
So, I am looking to buy barrels, I am not sure. I see plastic ones which had held carwash detergent in it. I am not sure I could use those. If someone knows about that please give me some light.

this is what I did with mine, 2x4 bracing underneath each 4x4, and I've started using lag screws to attach them together.

Think I would have used a semi circle for support instead of or on top of the horizontal 2x4s. That much weight over time may cause a problem.

Yes this is tricky the right size thread adapters are to much money so I just shoved the same thread adapter in and epoxied it into place 👍🏼

YOu did not mention what you are using the water for. No filter or first flush system or a pump if required. Just curious.

Where the over flow did i miss that
Here in my home, Baja California. We have water problems and the city is implementing a contingency plan that will make us have water supply from the state only 4 days out of the week.
...could this water storage system be applied to potable water and be able to use it on the house trough an electric water pump? (To avoid having to instal ti avobe the roof)
We used to own a passive solar home with a 10,000 gal concrete cistern in it, the original owner left documentation on a struggle they had at the time with the state of Wisconsin that prevented rainwater from being used to flush toilets etc. because it wasn’t deemed “potable”. Their workaround was to put 4 barrels up in the clerestory/attic space and he’d pump cistern (rain) water up once a week or so, and use a 5gallon bucket with a little dosing hose to draw in a chlorine/water solution that would purify the rainwater deeming it potable. We lived there 5 years and pitched the water up there once, the rest of the time we used straight rainwater to shower, laundry, do dishes, etc. without any ill effects, we did have a pre-rinse system that diverted the first 50 gallons or so to help rinse off the roof, etc. prior to it beginning to add to the cistern, which helped keep the debris in the main vessel low/non-existent. There were studies done in Jamaica and Australia that show rainwater harvesting if treated carefully as a usable source for 99% of your household needs.
One of the holes of the plastic barrels have a pipe thread and the other a course thread. How do you screw the male PVC adapter into the course thread, will it not leak. ???
I notice you didn’t add any vent hole line near the top of each barrel. I also did this dual barrel. But notice it only fill up about 75-80%. It couldn’t fully fill the bottom barrels

noob here. did the 2" male adapters fit ok on both sides of the barrel? i heard that one side has coarse threads and the other side has fine threads.
Don't we need an air release somewhere?
No, because it is gravity fed and the air flows back up through the pipes while the stream of water flows down. The rain will not flow and fill the 2" pipes completely.

That looks like a simple, yet effective system. Do the barrels fill up from the bottom barrel to the top barrel?

So, I am looking to buy barrels, I am not sure. I see plastic ones which had held carwash detergent in it. I am not sure I could use those. If someone knows about that please give me some light.
