- Micky Dolenz sings lead on The Monkees D.W. Washburn, followed by Michael Nesmith's very last solo appearance as a one of The Monkees with Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork. After his ending speech about The Monkees history, Nesmith on solo guitar performs his version of Tapioca Tundra originally recorded on The Monkees 1968 album The Birds, The Bees And The Monkees. The three surviving Monkees Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith are in concert together for the very last time at Hollywood Pantages Theater, Los Angeles, CA on September 16, 2016. Davy Jones died in 2012.
I was there that night....and I'm gonna tell you something...the minute Mike finished that song, there wasn't a dry eye anywhere in that room. It was very emotional, of course, no one knew that later on down the road that Mike would tour with Micky again...but this in the moment it felt like the end of an era and in a profound setting... this concert was a few blocks west of Sunset/Gower Studios where The Monkees filmed the tv series and several scenes from "Head". It was a celebration, but people felt sad. We all knew how important these guys were to us growing up and they will always be.

...well, the creators of the first manufactured band did, anyways........the Monkees themselves were just 4 kids answering an audition for a TV show, rather than 4 kids getting together to start a band. But, they had some good songwriters and some good toe tapping records.

Best interview ever was when a Sirius announcer was speaking with Tom Petty and Tom mentioned how much he loved Herman’s Hermits and The Monkees. The poor announcer did not know what to say and blurted out “It’s true when they say you should never meet your heroes”. Say what you want, both bands had great songs and a solid production team behind them. They created several songs amongst them that have stood the test of time. If their music was good enough for Tom Petty, it is surely good enough for me.
After being a fan for over 50 years, I just heard this song for the first time. Thanks for sharing.

Many people love the Monkees. I saw them twice in concert in 1967 in Detroit.
The girls in the audience were screaming the same as if they were at a Beatles concert. They are hugely popular.

I was a Monkees fan from day one. As an adult, I worked in the music biz with A-listers. Nesmith was not a jerk - he was protective of his family, his private life, and his creativity. He knew he was an expendable commodity. He tried to save his soul and earn a living. Add groupies, death threats, and loss of creative control over his songs - he got cranky. Because Nesmith could think outside the box, we have music videos and a whole new genre of comedy that is duplicated, even today. Maturity mellows us. Mike Nesmith is outrageously creative and an awesome nice guy. Good enough for Zappa - good enough for me!

I was lucky enough to be born in 1958 and everyday after school enjoyed 4 very talented, down to earth young men that brought me many many wonderful moments in my life...thank you boys you were far more loved than you know, and your contributions will eventually be recognized.
I have not watched the Monkees in decades and at first I didn't see Michael in that older gentleman on stage, but then he started talking. It's not just the voice, but the cadence that is pure Michael Nesmith.

I was born at 1956 , so I'd seen Monkees TV Show,and got All Albums and Singles. They are my Most Memorial Group. They get Old and me too. I Like Mike's Songs ,so This Movie make me Happy!

It's Tali I have some LP 's and CD of the Monkees I loved there humor they made people laugh through there fun and zany show that will all ways be remembered for years to come. They were so talented & Funny. I feel for Mickey that he lost his band friends he will all ways remember them and miss them. 💞
Rest in peace. Davy Jones, Peter Tork and Mike Nesmith. I still have the ticket on my phone from when I saw Mike Nesmith and Micky Dolenz at the Majestic Theater in Dallas Texas on Thursday April 16, 2020 at 8 pm. After this show, I emailed Mike and Micky and let them know that I really enjoyed getting to see them. Also, I emailed Micky Dolenz in December and told him that I really enjoyed getting to see him and Mike Nesmith at the Texas Trust CU theater in October. Also, a few Sundays ago, Me TV 55.1 showed episodes of the Monkees tv show all day long. I really enjoyed getting to watch those!!!

I like in Grand Prairie and I’m 69 so you know the monkees were my favorite back in the day. Wish I could have seen them when you did. I used to wear a wool cap just like Michael and had my belt buckle on the side like Peter. Thanks for the memories 🤗

I can't believe this song was written by Mike Nesmith. I totally love it , so many great memories from songs just like this one. This song shows the diversity of the sixties era, so many writers and performers were old enough to experience so many changes of great music in our past. This song calls out the roaring 20's and also brings us up to times at that period to now. A Classic...!!
The birds the bees the Monkees was such a diverse album. I loved it so much as it came out. To hear this cut sung live by Michael was truly a delicious treat. I'm 62 now vibrantly alive enjoying the hell out of the memories of the Monkees... ;)

Man it's hard to believe that was Mike Nesmith. I grew up in the 60s and of course loved the Monkees and everything that they produced: the great music, the cutting edge pop TV show, and the Monkees fashions - including Mikes toque that set him apart as kind of a rebel in my mind. (hey! I was a 10 year old boy! he looked cool to me!) Seeing these guys now is really bitter sweet and a reminder of how quickly our lives can go by and how, like Thomas Wolfe wrote, "you can't go home again." Still I wouldn't have missed it for the world.

wow. takes this 60 old back a few years. thank you all for the music, the tv show, it actually kept me alive there for a minute. real life back then was a real bitch, and the few minutes of fantasy was heaven for me personally. I met Davy and Micky down in Florida once. many years after the show, but I was thrilled beyond belief. Monkee's forever!

That was a good song back in the day. It was rocked up. The Monkees were amongst the greatest music groups of all time. So many great songs. Writers, producers,. but they sang and brought soul to them. Mike wrote great ones too.
If some of you among us are blessed to some day become one of us, there will be things such as this from your life that will make your heart smile and will give you a warm feeling throughout. Sadly, when that time comes, many of us will no longer be around for you to share it with us. Thank you Micheal and Mickey for sharing this moment with us. Davy and Peter, you are truly missed.
Mike Nesmith and Peter Tork are awesome muscians. Mickey Dolenz were accomplished actors who learned to be muscians. Headquarters is an AWESOME album.

Always loved the Monkees. Had dropped out of school and was working full time 6 days a week at 14 and took off on Mondays so I could watch the Monkees. In fact the 1st song I ever learned to play the chords all the way through the song was Door Into Summer.
The Monkees introduced me to music, a debt I'll never be able to repay you guys are awesome!

@@trumpetperson11 well the Monkees were created as a TV SHOW about a make believe rock band to actually compare to the Beatles. No mistake, the BEATLES were a legend. They had their inner squabbles and fights etc, but they managed to created GREAT MUSIC, GREAT songs. They were the tops during that era. but something funny happened with the Monkees.. even though they did not all play their own instruments at first.. 3 of them had a GREAT singing voice.. all but Peter. sort of like Ringo of the beatles.. talented but not great singers. but they started making these songs.. the songs were written I believe by Boyce and Hart and others. But they sang them very well.. eg The last train to clarksville and I'm a believer, Paupa Jeans blue with Mike Nesmith and many others.... people started seeing them as a REAL band and in many people's eyes, they became just that.
I absolutely agree. I'm an 80's kids (82). The Monkees were my dads generation. My dad had their records playing often and I remember watching the TV show, I believe on MTV, 20 years after it originally aired. The Monkee's have been a part of my life since the beginning.

I saw them in concert as a very young boy. I think I was 9 year old or so. I have always loved their music. The Monkey's were much better than they got credit for being. I love the music from that era.

I remember in '68 hurrying home (hitch-hiking) from St. John's HS/Toledo, got a hair cut enroute, did my academic homework, and then watched the Monkees TV debut with family. Dang good stuff, boys! Stupid as can be, but very entertaining!
Yes they originally called Mike Wool Hat instead of his name. It was his trademark for him.

I something like 10 to 12 years old when they came on the scene. They were fun to watch, the songs were catchy and will remain part of the soundtrack of my life. They were called THE PRE-FAB FOUR by critics. But does it really matter how they got together? If something is good it's good. That should be enough. There will always be a soft spot in my heart for these very good men.

Mickey Dolenz is Rock and Roll royalty. I got to meet him at a star studded screening of "Detroit Rock City" a few years back. I had come up to the film's writer, who I had worked with, and was telling him how great, funny and enjoyable the film came out. He was chatting up some cool looking dude in the lobby after the show. This cat was tall, had a long pony tail, was dressed head to toe in all black, and was as relaxed an' cool as a jungle cat. I was half-way congratulating my friend when my eyes strayed to this dude in black, and I realized ...it was Mickey Dolenz!
I'd worked in Hollywood for years by then, met all kinds of great folks, but suddenly... I started sweating, and tripping over my words, I was getting star struck! I'd worked with David Fincher, Rob Zombie, Ozzy, and many others...yet this was Mickey Dolenz: an idol from my childhood! Plus, Micky looked so awesomely cool, and he was politely letting me get my congratulations out, knowing this was a very big night for my friend (as it was one of his first big writing gigs that went all the way to release) and didn't need to hog any spot light. Real Class, this guy. I shook hands and left, an' Micky was so cool he did nothing to make me feel awkward, and smiled and nodded to me ( a stranger) though I could tell he knew I was starting to completely geek out over his presence. I'm sure he's had it happen so many times, he's an expert at making folks feel relaxed. Class-Act that Mickey Dolenz!
A love song to the fans....Their talent, genius and gratitude is what has made them so extraordinary to the once "kids like me"....It doesn't get any better than this, does it?
So sad to see 3 of 4 gone now. Davy was local to me, and the entire local community took it hard when he passed away. RIP Davy, Peter, and Mike. Hang in there, Mickey.

I'll tell you , I saw the Monkees a total of 4 times, The first time, my Aunt took me and my sister to go see them. Those years, I couldn't ell you one song they did. All we heard was girls screaming constantly. Many many years later, they came to Pind Knob in Michigan. I went to see that. The next year, they came back. I saw them one final time at the Fox theater thinking it's not going to be the same without Davy. I thought they can't do :cuddly toy" because that is sung by him. I thought of a few more too. But they did do cuddly toy and it sounded good. And Mike was back so they did you just might be the one and a revamped version of sweet young thing. That concert turned out to be the best of the 4.
Yeah, sadly in this day and age a song like "Sweet Young Thing" sung by an older guy would raise some eyebrows, to say the least. I wonder if Ringo still sings "You're Sixteen" in concert these days.
I saw Peter Tork play in a small local rock club back in the early 80's. He had a backup band and it was billed as "Peter Tork and the Monkees". (No other Monkees though) I remember him playing Bach's Invention in F on the keyboard. He was a pretty good musician.
The fact that they can all still sing makes me so happy and proud of them for all they have done!

I know that Mike mother, Bette Nesmith, invented Liquid Paper. I remember when the Monkees were promoting the 20th Anniversary reunion in 1986, this comedian--for the life of me, I can't remember his name--remarked, "Wish my mom invented White Out!" among mimicking the Monkees doing their famous walk with walkers; I guess that during the 1980s, men in their 40s were considered "old." I can only say that because I wasn't born yet when the Monkees were in their prime during the late 1960s, thanks to the 20th Anniversary Reunion, they captured both my ears and my hearts. Between 1986 and 2015, I would see nine Monkees concerts--with Davy, Micky and Peter who performed with more energy than men HALF THEIR AGE--and two concerts where the late Davy Jones performed solo, someone who I had the pleasure of meeting personally...Davy presented himself as a warm, genuine person who loved and appreciated his fans. His passing in 2012 was a shock and I'd felt that, because Davy was an integral part of the Monkees and someone who proved that dreams could come true--especially having grown from poverty in his native England to find success in America--his death from a heart attack(apparently, this was due to hereditary factors yet this was the first and last time that he experienced symptoms)was heartbreaking. Shortly after when the three surviving Monkees were planning their tribute tour for him, when Micky had said, "I was looking around for Davy...then I realized he wasn't there" was saddening to read; additionally, he'd said that he felt like he'd lost his brother. Though both Micky and Peter provide "video tributes" to Davy when they toured after Davy's death, I'd heard people tell me that, not taking anything away from the surviving Monkees nor their talents...when Davy died, it was like something really integral about the Monkees died as well.
Davy was a good guy, he also performed with David Cassidy in later years. Someone uploaded it to youtube.
Let me tell you, Im 60 years old and I well remember how The Monkees were a bright spot in my young life, the show came on in the afternoons, as my brother and I sat and waited for mom to pick us up from a babysitter, dreading going home to an abusive stepfather and hell on earth. Yes, I remember it well.
I REALLY Dug these guys when I was drafted 10/17/66....Sad
for those of us growing up in those glory days they were the real thing and then they spent the rest of their lives living up to the hype and I respect them for that because that time did belong to and was part of us. It's part of me still at 63.

When The Monkees' got back together in the 80's Michael Nesmith did not rejoin the group. His mother was the inventor of ""White Out" and when she passed away she left him a $25 million estate. Not many 60's bands who come back together 50 or so years later still have the same sound that they had when they were young. Like them or not in the year 2016, without a doubt they were a worldwide sensation at their peak. They're still a band that the "baby boomers" will go to see,for nostalgia reasons if nothing else.
Talentless? I think not. Lets see how well others are doing at 70ish years old. Give them the honor they deserve, and they do deserve some.

@@jamesk1027 well..the Stones weren't fabricated..tho their image was, james. I'm not sure it's fair to compare the two..the Monkees were a fake band on a TV show. The Stones were an organic band that logged many hours on stage.

All of us who grew up with the Monkees are going to soon be gone, but as long as we're alive we'll always remember the joy and positive energy they brought to us and the great expectations of our adolescence.
