- Michel Nesmith of the 1960s pop group ‘The Monkees’ has passed away aged 78. The songwriter and guitarist also had a phenomenal solo career that saw him touring up until last month.

i actually formed my first "group" as a 10 year old kid after the Monkees came on the scene. i had a toy drum set, a plastic guitar and a very old microphone and tube powered PA head with speaker. can't say we made real music, but we had real fun! 4 years later I formed a proper band with proper instruments. we played the 9th grade talent show around 1969 I think. here i am in my 60s still doing it mostly because the Monkees got me started.

R.I.P. Michael Nesmith. I really enjoyed the show and the band "The Monkees" as I grew up in the 1960's.
And that iconic winter hat when it wasn't cold. He started a trend. Lots do it now.
These guys had such a huge impact on my young life...I can't even begin to tell you.

Keep working till you can’t or life takes you suddenly. Work or in your case performing, is vital to your survival. And now you are the last vital member of a dear and important part of so many of our lives.

I used to race home from school so I could watch The Monkeys.. it was the highlight of my day and Mike Nesmith was the guy I had a crush on..11 years old. Then when he released his album with RIO I raced out and got it, and listened to that track over and over. Then we He toured here, I raced out and got my ticket! I was front row and so happy to see Him, what a buzz. So sad to hear he's gone, but never ever forgotten ❤🙏
Oh wow haha I used to rush home too so I could see the Monkees, and I too had a crush on Mike Nesmith (even though he was old enough to be my father haha)
@Julie Anne, I'm jealous girl! You had front row? That's amazing!! The Monkees have been one of my favorites my whole life. I was lucky enough to see them for their first reunion tour back in 1986 I think. I danced and sang to every song. RIP Nez.
@Julie Anne, The reason why Micheal Nesmith, Peter Tork, Davy Jones and Mickey Dolenz still, even got up to do what they do is because girls like you used to go and scream and cheer them on. You gave them the joy back that they gave to you.

I first heard them December 1966 when I was home on a 30 day leave from Vietnam....I was riding around in my Ford Mustang with my girlfriend and we were hooked on the Monkees'.That was some great cruising music...Was a fan for life....

Disagree. They of course had to bring up liquid paper, the most repeated fact having nothing to do with the man itself - but ignored his First National Band and all of the amazing songs he wrote before, during and after the Monkees - including Different Drum.
My first 45 record was I'm a believer played it over and over. Been a fan of their music my whole life the music will live on.
His song Joanne is one of the nicest songs you’ll hear. Great range in his voice. RIP Mike.
Me and my dad saw him and Mickey on their Farewell Tour in San Jose. I’m glad I saw them one last time. Rest In Peace, Mike. Thanks for the memories

My dad and I saw Mickey and him on their farewell tour in Charlotte. A few songs are saved to my Amazon favorites. The Monkees were just fun music.

Mike wrote and/or sang many of my favourite Monkees songs...Papa Gene's Blues, You Just May Be the One, What am I Doing Hanging 'round, The Girl I knew Somewhere.....the list goes on and on. RIP Mike and thank you for the music. Wow, only Micky left now. I am so sad.

I’m about to cry. I found the monkees in 9th grade. That was almost 5 years ago.
I never missed the show every week Mike was my favourite
So many I grew up with are now gone...sometimes you just wanna go where they all are at and remember how it was.
Every time I watch that interview clip where Mike gets emotional talking about Pete's passing, I get choked up. I was lucky enough to catch the Mike and Micky show live a couple of years back. So much fun. He was so talented.

Michael Nesmith along side the other members of that TV band were an inspiration to thousands and thousands of young people back in the day. For those of us who were young kids back then they gave us all HOPE, The Monkeys were much bigger than simply a TV show, Together the four of them provided that touch of hope that was so needed back then for many reasons. Mike you did a great job. RIP

I really liked his song “Magic.” My sister was mesmerized by his “El Dorado to the Moon.” My late father liked the corny side of his song “Chow Mein and Bowling.” Very sad to hear Michael Nesmith is gone. He was a big part of all of our lives, both before and after The Monkees. Thank you for the music and the memories.

As a fan of The Monkees since 1986, to say that my heart is broken is an understatement. For 35 years I've listened to their music, watched their show and their movie Head multiple times, read all i could read on them, and have seen them live many times. I just saw The Micky and Mike show last month. And now Mike's gone. First Davy ( R.I.P.), then Peter( R.I.P.), and now Mike. It's with a heavy heart that i say: Rest in peace, Papa Nez. The wool hat has permanently been retired💔😞😢😭

Same here. Found them in 1986. I was giving private lessons back then and every time I was payed I rushed and bought another record. I’m so sad … but happy about the memories.

Can't believe it I was thinking about Mike Nesmith all day yesterday my favourite Monkee now he's gone its like some kind of omen. Monkees were very popular here in the UK great memories as a child RIP

Before The Monkees , Michael was a traveling Folk Singer in Texas, and came to our Elementary School in Odessa, Texas. He sang solo with an acoustic guitar. I still remember him singing Michael Row Your Boat Ashore, and I thought it was about him. He was very friendly and engaging to a bunch of school children. Within a year he was on television with The Monkees.

My brother just passed away two days before Thanksgiving this year and he was 78 almost 79. We lost another musical legend. RIP Mike Nesmith.

One of my favorite bands, Budgie, is from that area, I think.

Such sad news. RIP Mike. Always my favourite Monkee. He wrote Different Drum for Linda Ronstadt. My favourite song of his was Tapioca Tundra - especially sung in more recent years with his story about Mark Twain and Rudyard Kipling. Well worth a listen.
RIP Davy, Peter and Mike, your music helped me through many tough times and I still listen today. You will always be in my heart!

Mike wanted to do Different Drum on the Monkees TV show, but the producers said it was too country so he gave the song that he wrote to Linda Ronstadt who of course made a huge hit with it. Rip Sir, very talented man, huge career after the tv show

Rest In Peace Michael from a fan in Australia. I was, and still am, an ardent fan of the Monkees when they were first on television and watched every show. Was also a member of the Monkees Club and have most of their records. A sad day.
I'm so heartbroken! I didn't really know who the Monkee's were growing up, back then. I just knew their music. However, it wasn't until 1987, I believe. When they made a come back with their tv show. And I loved them since.
Hearing the news of each of their passing, just broke my heart. And now there's only one!!

this news makes me so sad. Mike was a boyhood hero of mine along with the other Monkees. Being from Texas I felt connected to the guy with the slight drawl and a wool hat. Later in life as I began to write songs myself I found a new appreciation for Mike Nesmith's work as a poet and composer/musician. I do feel like something has been taken from me with Mike's passing. I wish you well on your journey home Mike Nesmith.

Nesmith was so much more than a Monkee. His music abilities were simply beyond compare. His post Monkee days were his best. He wrote so many great songs but was never really given the credit he should have had. I nearly wore out my Michael Nesmith 8 track tapes as a young teen. Still love the music!!! Her name was Joanne…. RIP Michael
