John 17:3: "This is eternal life, that they may know you the only true God and Jesus Christ whom you have sent". Absolutely right that you must know who God is to worship properly. Additionally the Regulative Principle of Worship is very important.
Jer 23:27 Which think to cause my people to forget my name by their dreams which they tell every man to his neighbour, as their fathers have forgotten my name for Baal. BDB Definition: Baal = “lord” 1) supreme male divinity of the Phoenicians or Canaanites (noun proper masculine)
Most churches don't sing Psalms. If they do, they are generally man modified. God gave us a Hymnbook in the center of the Bible. The Scottish Metrical version is a great way to learn and sing the Psalms.
Where in the world did this emphasis on songs-as-worship come from? Try as I might, I find no such emphasis on it in the New Testament. If it was that important, wouldn’t Jesus have demonstrated it more? In fact, it is only recorded ONCE that He even sand a hymn and that was AFTER the end of the Last Supper?
probably BECAUSE worship from the Psalms and the songs & hymns sung in the NT Church ( at that time) was not distorted & man centered...like it is in this day and age...it has to be addressed to bring Glory ONLY to God and not man...
No, please try to keep in mind that my criticism isn’t about SINGING. It’s clear from Scripture that we will SING to the Lord. My criticism is with the EMPHASIS on singing AS WORSHIP. If you read Isaiah 1 and Amos 5, for example , you will see that God is angry with them BECAUSE they are emphasizing “worship” to the exclusion of what He really wanted them to do. It is my observation that churches that emphasize singing as worship do absolutely NO evangelism or discipling nor any disciplining. It’s a cover up for a failure to actually “fall into the earth and die”. Most of the believers in these types of churches will eventually fall away
@@CSUnger I believe it came out of the Jesus culture of the 60’s . That was the heyday for what we now know as praise band “worship” Calvary Chapels and The Vineyard movement . The common saying in CC is worship and the Word . Meaning the singing is the worship and the preaching is merely instructional on a horizontal plain . There’s no sense of liturgy as scene in scripture
@Jamie Gallagher, that’s interesting. I have been mentioning CC to some as an example of a church with an acceptable theology but it always stuck in my throat because subliminally I recognized that they were simply just another, perhaps lighter, version of this move towards emotionalism masquerading as faith and calling it “worship” just gives it the veneer of authenticity when there’s really nothing authentic about it. It’s merely a smoke screen to conceal lukewarm ness and a shallow Theology.
This is a treasure of good teaching on family worship.
Amen ~ Glory be to God.
Where can I find the article that Dr. Joel Beeke mentioned at around 41:00 about all the things women can do in the church?
Very helpful discussion.
