One of the reasons that Home Free fans suggest this song (after a reactor is familiar with the group) is the shock of hearing their "super bass" Tim Foust start this out in a tenor range. (displaying the high end of his 5+octave range) And the fact that Chance then takes the bass part and drops it right in the basement.

Definitely all a capella. The percussion that Adam Rupp is capable of is absolutely amazing. He keeps it going for almost 8 minutes on their recent cover of American Pie (released for the 50th anniversary of the song and featuring the original singer/songwriter Don McLean) - well worth listening to. They also recently released a Sea Chantey medley where Adam actually manages to "play" castanets at one point.

I think it was suggested because their bass Tim started out in his high octave. And Adam the beat boxer always kills it. And everyone is singing in their high ranges. And Chance had the surprise bass solo.
I kind of like that he didn't pick up on that. We Homefries sometimes get so caught up in the "surprise" that we overlook the fact that this is an amazing cover, better than the original IMO.

You should check out their arrangement of Do You Hear What I Hear, which was arranged by Adam Rupp, their beatboxer. It is even more complex than even this arrangement, and also their complex harmonies and arrangement in How Great Thou Art, which is the finest version I have ever heard of that great classic hymnal.

I love Home FRee!!!! They have a huge following. Thank you for your reaction. Adam Rupp is known as the man who swallowed a drum set...he is the best as percussive sounds.
I watch a lot of voice teachers reactions to songs, and you are the first one to clearly explain the "ending a sentence with a comma or period" pieces, and point out the diverging vocals, with Austin going up the scale while the rest go down the scale. Perfect! Thank you for a great break-down and reaction!
DJ, another amazing reaction with education. Aside from the many fantastic points you made, what I love about Mayday is that Tim moves to the high register while Chance moves down from baritone into the bass part. I believe for the song to work as it did, they needed three in the high register and Tim was better suited to do so. For me, it showed Home Free's versatility. Of course, Adam the beatboxer is solid. Between Pentatonix, Home Free, and Voiceplay, these groups prove you can have a very full sound without instruments. As an accapela fan, for these three groups to do it with only five members each when many groups twice their size cannot is simply incredible. Always appreciate the valuable insights of your reactions man, don't stop doing them ever. Be well my friend.
Janelle did a great job with the color as usual!!! Love you Janelle!! Like everyone said Adam Rupp is incredible!! He has won several competitions!! Austin’s voice is that of an Angel 👼 Rob’s is beautiful also! The whole group is wonderful! Of course your reaction is on point!
I've seen Home Free in concert 4 times and Adam Rupp (beat boxer) is seriously a total freak of nature! I've met Adam and he is such a nice, humble man. In my music teacher for 30 years opinion...he is the best anywhere! How drum solos are famous world wide.
Us 'Home Fries' love our guys. They really are amazing aren't they! Not one instrument, minus using a loop for concerts. This is a great song as it features all of their ranges. Their melody is so rich and beautiful. Check out their video: 'Man of Constant Sorrow' Adam Chance does an amazing Jews harp, Tim Foust's bass is sooo looowww, Adam Rupp's harmonica is incredible, Rob Lundquist does a cute sound before he says: "Here we go!" and Austin Brown round it off with their unique sounds. They are polished and professional. Home Free has been at it for many, many years and it shows. I disliked country music before I heard them, turns out it isn't the music, but the arrangement and final sound. The group competed in and won the fourth season of The Sing-Off on NBC in 2013.
Hiya - liked this even before I watched you react. Love your reactions and analysis - it's great to see music teachers' take on acapella groups (and to see your 'blown away face) :)
I love Home Free. Have been listening to them for song long. But just now, having you break down the different ways the changed but still came across as a perfect acapella group was awesome. Like when a couple of them were going up with their sound at the same time a couple were going down. I actually caught that, where I've never paid attention to it before. It's awesome. I really believe Home Free is phenomenal as a cappella group... Thank you for judging this I am so glad I caught you tonight.
Thanks for the great reaction! I like the way you break down the song and appreciate all the little extras that Home Free uses in their music. I would like to hear your analysis of their cover of When a Man Loves a Woman. The harmonies are wonderful but Adam’s beatboxing and Austin’s lead is unbelievably amazing.
You viewed this song a little early in your Home Free journey. The shock factor is there because Tim ( their super bass) is using the top of his his 5 octave range and singing along with Austin and Rob. Love Home Free and please react to more.
This is one of my favorite songs Home Free does. It is gorgeous. I listen several times each time I do listen to it. Rob used to study opera. (The one who looks like your barber.)
Tim Foust (the bass) is also a songwriter. To hear his range, watch the Home Free video "Snow Globe". Austin Brown (high tenor) is also a songwriter and there is a video of one of his original songs "Love Me Like That". Rob Lundquist has such a sweet, soulful tenor and it's best displayed in a collaboration between Home Free & Texas Hill "Dreamer". Fall down the Home Free rabbit hole - it's a fun fall!
Home Free is one of my favorite bands ever. I fell in love with their music when I saw them on the Sing Off. Since then I have bought every album and have seen them in concert a few times. Their vocal percussionist is perhaps the best there ever was. In concert he does “drum” solos. One that is traditional drums and one that is electronic drums. They are all so immensely talented! If you like what you hear here then I definitely suggest checking out their other music.
Easily one of my favorites from Home Free ... Trust me, it's only ONE of my favorites. If you've never listened to any of their other videos, this is not the best one to start with, simply because of the jaw dropping surprise of Adam Chance (Chance) and Tim Foust switching places. Chance can get really low in his bass, but Foust can (and has) blow sub-woofers in concert. He's tall, and I swear he pulls the depth from the ends of his toes at times .... Adam Rupp (who started the group with his brother years ago, and is the only remaining person left from the starting group) does drum solos during the middle of the concerts -- while everyone else is resting their vocal chords -- that last from 8 - 10 minutes .... and then he goes right back in to finish the concert. Without taking a meaningful break. Awesome doesn't BEGIN to describe what that man can do!! If you haven't yet, check out their 'Man of Constant Sorrows'. Would LOVE to see your reaction to it!!
Love the color of your new digs. I hope you weren't so overwhelmed with the rest of the piece that you failed to notice Tim Foust, basso profundo extraordinaire, sang a nicely smooth tenor here. Of course he doesn't have the punch that Austin has at that level, but for someone who regularly blows out speakers with the bass It was very nice. I really like your reviews because you point out a lot of little things that my untrained ear just doesn't catch. There's more in this bowl of soup than I knew.
What are those echo like "ohs" called? That was neat...I can listen to their version over and over again. Tim Foust, their bass has phenomenal range. I'm a sucker for the low voices but man! His voice, along with Avi Kaplan and Geoff Castellucci, their ranges just are jaw dropping! Need more stuff in your background....Love the reaction as always Sue
Ah...more Home Free. Thank you! I love these guys and Chance doing the base here is just beautiful. This is one of my top favorites of theirs. Is there an echo with the new set up? My audio is picking up static and a sort of echo...not something that happens when I listen to Tim, Geoff, or Avi so maybe in the recording? It only happens when you are speaking, not on the music. I also prefer the opposite screen within a screen. Watching your reactions is more fun than the video. You are too tiny to see! We definitely need to see you better! I like the new look though. Super cool and sleek. Keep up the awesome reactions!
These guys are hilarious in concert & call their concerts "parties". 🤗 Check out their Little Red Riding Hood (Sam the Sham & the Pharoahs). Also, Austin with the lead in Bring Him Home (Les Mes). He was in musical theater before joining HF and does a Majestic job with this very difficult to perform song. 💞
Great reaction! This one is one of the favorites of many of us. They really killed it! Have you done End of the Road? Wow! One of the things that makes Home Free so great is their incredible arrangements. Darren Rust leads in that, their extraordinaire producer/arranger. He still sings himself with the Blenders. He knows how to blend harmonies, top-notch! Tim and Austin have arranged some, and they all put in their input to make the songs wonderful. The leads are always great, but what they do in the background really pulls it altogether and makes them how good they are. Enjoyed your reaction!! Thanks. Take care.
Thanks for your reaction! I enjoyed your commentary. I do wish you hadn't been advised to react to this one QUITE so soon in your Home Free reaction journey. I see that most of the other comments have mentioned the same, and that you have acknowledged. ;-) Still...I found your comments knowledgeable and true to what I like about their work, as well. I'm 71, and have been singing since I was tiny, except for a space of about 20 years, where I couldn't, due to rheumatoid arthritis bending me over forward to the point that singing anything except as a deep bass was impossible (I used to have a 5-octave range, myself, and though typically singing 1st Soprano, I'd often fill in for either the Baritone or Bass parts if we had choir members missing). I had both hips replaced in 2017, and have slowly been retraining my voice. Listening to Home Free since I discovered them in 2015 has been one of the best things that ever happened in my life. They also got me through both of those hip surgeries, therapy sessions, and recovery time, bringing great joy to me as I listened to the harmonies you have touted so well. :-D - - - - - - - - - - If you're interested in learning about how the group began, and the men who have participated since then, I (Linda Wingfield all over the rest of the internet, by the way...this is just my gaming channel) did a bunch of research back in 2019, that I wrote into an article filled with internet links and examples of the work of Home Free as a group, as well as some of their individual input. You can find it on my website, at: lindawing.net/arts/music/home-free-a-brief-history/ After I finished that, in 2019, I also put together a range comparison for the guys, which includes Chris Rupp (the originator of the group in the first place, whom you'll read about in that brief history), but also includes Adam Chance (who took over as the baritone you heard get down into Tim's usual range in this song). You can find that chart at: lindawing.net/arts/music/home-free-vocal-ranges-chart/
Loved the reaction! Now you truly need to see and hear Home Free's cover of Dire Straits "Brothers in Arms". Home Free takes A Capella to a whole other realm! Be prepared!. Thank you for the wonderful reaction.
They have an absolutely amazing producer, Darren Rust, who also arranges a lot of their music. Darren is the 6th Home Free member as we Fries call him. Tim Foust arranges some, too.
As ChechKris wrote, the main reason this song is so super is that the bass profundo Tim Foust sings tenor, and the baritone Adam Chance goes deep bass. And the vocal percussion is subtle and yet so immensely important to this song. Personally, I also love the end with dual vocal lyric lines simultaneously (Rob & Austin).
You can see Home Free in youtube videos from when they competed on the Sing Off a couple of years back. And Chance, (the Baritone) who took over the bass this time for Tim (so Tim could sing at a higher register), was originally with Street Corner Symphony as their bass in the season before Home Free competed. Awesome reaction! Keep them coming. :O)
The guy that looks like your barber is Rob Lundquist the lead tenor. Tim Foust started the song is the bass of the group. The long curly hair is Austin Brown is the sky high tenor. Back left Adam Rupp Rupp beatboxer. And the final one is Adam Chance (Chance) is a bass but he sings baritone for the group. Enjoyed your reaction to this awesome group.
Rob Lindquist is a tenor, but I believe Austin Brown who is a classically trained tenor with a background in musical theater is the LEAD Tenor, the whole group is just mind blowingly awesome ❣️
THANK YOU! I've probably watched 50 reactions to this song and nobody...and I mean NOBODY catches the ascending and descending harmonies at 5:30. Well done sir. You have just earned a sub.
I paused the video to post my last comment so here's my final thoughts. You get it. You hear the intricacies and vocal dynamics going on and can speak on them. That, I can get down with. You didn't comment on the fact that the bassist opened the song singing tenor but I'm gathering you're not super familiar with them maybe? Idk...but I loved your reaction and look forward to more.
Love your reactions as always. Your new setup is dope. Just one wish, I would love to see you in the big picture and the music video in small. Most of us are big fans of the creators you react to, so we know their songs and videos by heart anyway. We are here for your reaction, so it would be nice to see your facial expressions throughout the whole video. Thanks :)
Well Home Free is astounding in their harmonies no doubt but what most Home Free fans love about this song is that the man starting the song, Tim Foust, is the bass! We try not to ask new reviewers to listen to Mayday until they know Tim’s register better. He was just showing off his 5 octave range here. Chance is the newest member (2016) and is a bass/baritone and he can do the bass when Tim goes high. Pretty remarkable. Austin (reddish hair) is the high tenor. Rob (with glasses) is the tenor and Adam is the beatboxer. I think he’s the best beatboxer on the planet. There is a video on youtube called Adam Rupp drum solo live. He’s amazing to watch. What I can’t understand is how he breathes. To hear more harmonies try Helplessly Hoping, Seven Bridges Road, How Great Thou Art. To hear Tim go really low look up Misty Mountains from the movie the Hobbit he sings with another “a cappella” singer Peter Hollens. Peter is a master of layering and it’s only their 2 voices. You might enjoy that one. Great review!
The trick with beatboxing is some of the sounds can be made on an in-breath, so Adam has to arrange the beatboxing in such a way that he can do that now and then. Even then he has his limits. I understand on American Pie when he recorded it in the studio he nearly passed out three times. So, yeah, that one may not feature in many live shows.
First time seeing a reaction to this Home Free cover of Mayday without a single mention of one of the world's best bass singers, singing tenor, wow just wow. Tim Foust has blown speakers with his bass voice.
I really enjoyed your analysis and reaction to this! It's one of my favorite videos by Home Free. I would love to see you react and analyze VoicePlay's newest video, My Mother Told Me featuring Jose Rosario Jr.

Thanks for your wonderful and kind comments ! You’ve made my day and welcome to our family 😊
The sick part is the first singer, is actually the bass of the group!!
Ah, Mayday! By far their best, IMO! The role changes, harmonies, setting, video. Just so amazing.
I've seen Home Free in concert 4 times and Adam Rupp (beat boxer) is seriously a total freak of nature! I've met Adam and he is such a nice, humble man. In my music teacher for 30 years opinion...he is the best anywhere! How drum solos are famous world wide.
Great Reaction as Usual!!!! I Love Home Free just as much as I Love Pentatonix!!!! I like the new look!!!!
Thanks, Christie! Welcome to the comment thread haha. Hope you're as awesome as you just made me feel :)
@@TempleMusicAcademy Your Welcome!! Keep up the Great Reactions, I Love the Way You Breakdown the Songs and Voices!!!!
@@TempleMusicAcademy Also you should check out "Acapop! Kids" since you Also Love Pentatonix!!!! They were Co-Founded by Scott Hoying from PTX!!!!
Juice not jews
Rob, the chubby guy with the beard has a beautiful voice. In fact they all have amazing voices. They'd all be the lead singer in a normal band.
Adam is an entire percussion section all by himself. Love your reactions!!!
I love how they blend so well yet when one solos it is well defined.
I love Home Free and look forward to you doing more of their work, I would love to see you react to some of their solo work.
Bass Tim singing up there. Showing off his incredible 5 octave range. 🥰😘😍 (the guy with long hair who started it.... he hit a G1 in Ring of Fire 😳)
I think it was actually an f sharp 1 but close enough
I’m not sure what the actual notes are, but the live version they did on The Sing Off was a half-step lower than the one with Avi Kaplan!
@@Creyes1995 F#1 was the Sing Off one, G1 was the studio recording one, so both of you are correct ;)
Then there was that time he blew a speaker during a live performance. That dude is unbelievable.
@@natashah3687 I hear it happens a lot actually, Chance has even done it a few time.
Homefree there voices are amazing and beautiful they know how to harmonize wowwwwwww I love to hear them sing
They take my breath away.
Adam Rupp is a 2x world champion beatboxer, watch their sea shanty medley they just did and you'll see why he's a 2x champion
If you want to watch beautiful harmonies and arrangement, you might check out their Helplessly Hoping and/ How Great Thou Art
Love Home Free it really does not matter which ones you pick to do
Love the color of your new digs.
Their beatbox is second to none!!
Home Free is the best!❤️🔥❤️
One of my favorite groups!
Thanks, for doing the reaction DJ. Cool new studio.
Great video, so happy you reacted to it!!
Also love the new set up 🤗
Thanks, Franzi! Loving the way it turned out as well :)
Omg I love love love HomeFree they deserve more recognition they're amazing 👏 💖 💗 💕 💓 ❤

If you're interested in learning about how the group began, and the men who have participated since then, I (Linda Wingfield all over the rest of the internet, by the way...this is just my gaming channel) did a bunch of research back in 2019, that I wrote into an article filled with internet links and examples of the work of Home Free as a group, as well as some of their individual input. You can find it on my website, at: lindawing.net/arts/music/home-free-a-brief-history/
After I finished that, in 2019, I also put together a range comparison for the guys, which includes Chris Rupp (the originator of the group in the first place, whom you'll read about in that brief history), but also includes Adam Chance (who took over as the baritone you heard get down into Tim's usual range in this song). You can find that chart at: lindawing.net/arts/music/home-free-vocal-ranges-chart/
My favorite cover by Home Free is what I call Austin Brown's Holy Grail, " When a Man Loves a Woman" outstanding! A must see!
Adam Rupp - Beatbox......he is the best. Love Home Free...
Tim Foust has blown sub woofers during performances. His range is incredible!
Yup... I was there! A lady went into labor during the concert. There is a fan video of the concert in Illinois..
This is one of my FAVORITES of theirs!! SO MANY FAVES though! Woman/Female... When a man loves a woman, End of the road... so many
Would love to see a reaction to When a Man loves a Woman,…
Ohh I love this group!!! They are sooiii good!!
This is awesome. The more you listen, the more you will be hooked
Divine, Sublime. yes. Adam Rupp is the unassuming and very powerful factor.
I love Home Free and this one is in my top 3!!
So good!!
💙💙💙💙💙
I loved your coments and wholeheartedly agree. this group is awesome ! June 2021, from Brazil.
That percussion is none other than the amazing and beloved freak of nature otherwise known as Adam Rupp.
Love Love Home Free..
Keep them together take there music last for ever
HOOOOLD UP! Tim doing highs😱
haha, right!?
In this one, I think he even does the high harmony at the ending bits.
And no, I will never be sick of that phrase.
Good 😌
Thank you so much for your comments and welcome to the channel/family!
Thanks :)
Yeeeeeees... they are doing the percussion sounds. They are sooooo 👏 awesome
I love this group ❤️❤️🤩
The is a great song sung by amazing singers.
They are the best!!!!! ❤️
They stayed true to Cam’s original recording arrangement including the same key!
Old set was good, new set is good. Just keep the reactions coming. Love them.

Thank you, I am happy I found your page. I will be watching more. Love your comments and information!
Happy to have you! Welcome to our family
First time seeing a reaction to this Home Free cover of Mayday without a single mention of one of the world's best bass singers, singing tenor, wow just wow. Tim Foust has blown speakers with his bass voice.
To really experience the range that Tim Foust has you need to watch their performance of "Ring of Fire" on the Sing Off.
I’ve always loved them because they’re the kind of group that probably get together on the weekends to barbecue.
A gift from above.
I really enjoyed your analysis and reaction to this! It's one of my favorite videos by Home Free. I would love to see you react and analyze VoicePlay's newest video, My Mother Told Me featuring Jose Rosario Jr.
I really love listening to you.
