What a song , what a voice..pure gold
Perhaps this is the most beautiful love song of all time, beautifully, tenderly and emotionally sung. It touches my heart. Bravo, Roberta!❤🌹🌹👋👋❣
It is! No doubt in my mind.
Amen
Just learned something new and profound about this song today, after decades of repeatedly drowning in the song. Roberta mentioned that the song is about how mother embraces her newborn child... Now the lyrics makes perfect sense. And yes, that is how I felt when my children were born. I can always tell my sons to listen to this song if they want to know how I felt as a father watching them being born.
That's not true. Roberta didn't mention anything, she was just singing her cover. Ewan McColl wrote the song and his girlfriend Peggy Seeger did the original; this was in 1957. It is about Ewan and Peggy's love for each other and there is no connection at all with motherhood.
@@Marco-ns7ih Flack mentions in the beginning of this video just before starting to sing the song, (paraphrasing) "...of many images rendered listening to the song, her favorite image is the one where a mother sings to her newborn..."
@@sang-jinri7491 Yes, I know what she tells the audience before starting to sing. She tells some story that she made up to make people believe that she wrote the song and that her version is the original. Her cover was released for the first time in 1969, this was the album version. The same cover was released again in 1972, this was the single version. Later she did live performances. At that time the song that was definitely not written by her and that was definitely not about motherhood was already 15-18 years old because the original is a 1957 song about love between a man and a woman.
For some reason people like to believe this fairy tale.
Many people believe also the fairy tale that she wrote and originally performed Killing Me Softly With His Song. That is a cover too. She has always refused to say the name of Lori Lieberman who is the artist who wrote the lyrics and originally performed Killing Me Softly.
@@Marco-ns7ih I see your point, but I don't ever recall her telling / alluding anyone (inclusive of the audience in this particular performance) to that she wrote the song. The first time I heard this song on the radio was in the early 90's, and from the start I was aware that she did the cover, not as the original performer or as the writer of the song. (the same goes with KMSWHS) Perhaps I was studious enough to research on the song writers? But I know many are aware of the songwriters since the dawn of the internet age. And I don't ever get the sense that she is even slightly portraying to be the writer. But then, maybe I am just focusing on the song, and I don't spend much time reading her interview transcripts. BTW her cover version is the one I enjoy the most, and doing the cover version is an art form of its own.
@@sang-jinri7491 She doesn't litterally say: "It's my song" or something like that. You're right about that. But she suggests. First the story about motherhood and her newborn baby, then "very appropriate for my situation (....) the first time etc". I think that this was the start of the urban legend.
If she would have said "this is my original version of the song that I wrote", she would have been caught lying which would harm her career. She is much too intelligent to do so.
I don't say it's a bad cover. It's a good cover, in fact I like it more than Peggy Seeger's original. My favourite version though is Peter, Paul & Mary's cover.
Maybe you have seen a video of a live performance of The Fugees doing their cover (yuk) of Killing Me Softly. After a few minutes Roberta Flack enters the stage and the excited audience loves it. They love to see cover artist Lauryn Hill and "original" artist Roberta Flack singing together. But it is not Roberta's song, Lauryn Hill and Roberta Flack are just two cover artists singing together but (almost) everyone thinks that it is Roberta's song.
Her version of Jesse is a cover too, the original was done by Janis Ian.
OMG !!! The Most Beautiful Song Ever !!! God Bless this Beautiful Woman 🙏🙏🙏🏿🙏🙏🏿
This song moves me to tears...It's so beautiful.
I agree
I like the way she refers to the song meaning as a mother Aardvark seeing her baby for the first time in the 1975 version, it's sweet .
Just amazing it's all you can say
Performances like this were the gift she gave. Flawless and peerless every time.
One of the most beautiful songs ever written! One of the greatest singers of all time!
She out sings any singer out today by a landslide!
Ladies and gentlemen,
This is what you call talent.!!
Pure brilliance.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Such an incredible, pitch-perfect voice, singing such a beautiful song. I doesn't get any better than this.
I've been around a while, and I think this is probably the most beautiful voice I've ever heard.
It IS the most beautiful voice you (and I) have ever heard!
I remember exactly where I was when I first heard this song. I was driving home from work after finishing the swing shift at General Telephone in So Cal. I had to pull over to the side of the road because I couldn't see the road through the tears in my eyes
Lost for words but I understand ya.
Me too.
The studio version is way more hypnotic and captivating. The slower pace is perfect for this song.
Oh my dear Lord
Precious in the 70s as is to this day
This woman is mesmerizing.
This has to be the most beautiful love song ever written and performed like no other, the lyrics melt my heart.
I would play this song for my son Eddie ❤RIP my love 💕
Aardvarks can't sing but this lady blows me away with this rendition, my favourite song ever
This song is for everyone who holds their child for that first tim3
A rather beautiful way of thinking about it.
I’m going to have my family play this at my going home to heaven celebration dedicated to my boys from their mother the way I felt when I first saw their face when they were born and ever since
Just stunning. Her rendition and her powerful voice are made for this song.
1973....standing outside home room in highschool, waiting for the bell to start the day....what else can i say......i guess i can say its been 50 years....this is why they call it soul music. i remember someone that used to also stand outside her homeroom every day. her face, her hair, her smile, her dark eyes.... she never gets old. its just striking the memories this song evokes.... besides standing there... there was the sound of this song. i'm thinking a teacher had the radio on, before classes....and it was perfect. oh, and yes, i remember the triplets....the nerdy triplets on the other side of the hallway. always early too. ha.
My God... what a gift she is to all of us.
This Lady's singing touches my soul.
She is so talented and intoxicating.
❤❤❤ How i felt ( and still) about each of my 3 Sons. Has always been my song for them. Only Roberta sings it best ❤️
Sang from her soul, simply beautiful !
I never knew until today, after all this time, that this song was about a mother holding her newborn child for the very first time. It is beautiful. I thought it was a love song to Roberta's husband. It's beautiful, no matter who it is to.
the voice of an angel!!!!!
My absolute favorite song ever! My soul loves this soooo much!
loving this. brings back beautiful memories of my childhood with my folks. oh how i miss them…
I SAW HER IN 1975 AT THE SAN JOSE CENTER OF PERFORMING ARTS AND SHE SANG THIS SONG AS WELL AS MANY OTHERS !!! I LIKE ARETHA , GLADYS , DIANA ETC BUT ROBERTA IS HEAD AND SHOULDER ABOVE ALL OF THEM !!! I TOOK MY DATE AND MY SISTER AND HER DATE AND IT WAS A MAGICAL NIGHT I WILL NEVER FORGET !!! "YOU ARE EVERY SING AND EVERY SING IS YOU " !!!
Truly awsome

I’m going to have my family play this dedicated to my boys from me their mother the way I felt the first time I saw their face when they were born and ever since
That's when I was born Roberta.... Thank you ❤️
WOW ! That was incredible to say the least , her voice is enough to put you in a state of euphoria . So beautiful there's no other vocalist anything like her !!!
I agree!
Gode gave her a gift of genuine beautiful ,soulful voice. Straight from the heart and soul of her very being.god was showing out when he created this one, letting his glory shine.

Absolutely beautiful....I felt that each time my babies were placed in my arms for the first time, 🤗🤗

Yes mother & child😊
What a voice!!!!!!
This song makes me think of all the people I loved or liked who have passed over just like Fleetwood Macs - Albatross
Beautiful, hermoso
So beautiful. Gives me goose bumps.
Voz extraordinaria, belleza hecha música, poesía emotiva. Gracias.
every time i play this song it kills me every time. love it!
Clint Eastwood used this song with her permission in the early 70s movie Play Misty for me. The song gained traction from the exposure. It climbed the charts and made her a star.
Há muitos prazeres na vida. Um deles é ouvir e ver Roberta Flack cantar. Ela é linda demais !!!!!!!!!!!!!
I dedicate this song to my pet ardvark.
thought I was the only one who heard that for a minute
Amazing...what a Beautfiul voice....
Beautifully sang no lie❤
I've always loved this song
What a voice!!
ein lied das sehr tief geht
Did I understand correctly: Aardvark ?
'The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" has a sort of theatrical understatement - like a stage whisper allowing for solemn words.
The song is presented by Roberta Flack like pure poetry, which cannot fail to move you somewhere, somehow.
Yes, yes, yes.
Angels walk among us
all my pain just left! Beautiful
Only love is Real. thanks Roberta
Moving to tears indeed. But not about seeing your child for the first time. Personally, I never kiss my childs on their mouths, let alone that I would “lay down” with them. Clearly, this song refers to a deep and strong love between adults!
Indeed. For some reason people like to believe the fairy tale that seeing her newborn child for the first time inspired her to write this song. The song was in fact written and originally performed in 1957, years before Roberta's cover.
Awww, She's Great!!!
She is pure Godly, beauty with God's gift
Amazing no covers beat the original
This is not the original . Folk singer, Ewan McColl ( father of Kirsty McColl ) wrote this love song, dedicated to Peggy Seeger. He actually hated Roberta Flack's version.
@@ThefightingCelt both mccoll and Seeger weren't fans of this version and mccoll hated all the covers but loved the royalties. How strange.
Can't wait to see your face Grace🌷
The Englsh composer sat on this for 10 years!
She was beautifull!!!!!
Wow!
❤😂😢
Shalom Shalom from US Navy Base Sasebo Nagasaki Japan 🇯🇵
So beautiful 😍❤
Singing for the old rich white man will always taint this amazing talent.
💖💫❤️
Why do people think Aretha is the best? Roberta, Gladys, Barbra, Whitney, Celine and Mariah, anyone? WTF?
Many great singers! Each with one or more songs that are best only when they do it!
How is it that so few of these comments are about the mother aardvark? That’s the weirdest song introduction I’ve ever heard.
Ditto sweetie! 😘 💋 ❤
So beautiful. Onlyone that could beat her or even compare is Gladys Knight
💕
🐔? ✊ 🤔
❤❤❤❤
❤️
Could be sung to (or about) the birth of your child…
Absolutely the best eye dripping music…I made love to an awesome woman when this hit hit the streets
Member I sent you a shock wave with my twin flame

What is so impressive about a mother aardvark? Honest question
Who wrote this song?
Ewan McColl wrote this song for his girlfriend (who became his wife later) Peggy Seeger who also sang the original version in 1957.
did she say .. a mother aardvark?
Did you know this was the official song of of an Air Force squadron of Thud pilots in Nam they would play it on a loop for hours and hours. That says something.
My favorite Roberta song and favorite voice of all time!
The beauty of this song ! Roberta, the lyrics, the instrumentation (especially in the studio version !)
You can listen to this with your headphones on laying in bed with your eyes closed or with your beloved husband or wife. It’s a precious moment not to be passed up or taken for granted! Don’t miss it ! Peace !!!!!!
The emotional expression in her voice has no peer.
