LYRICS
Jesse, come home there's a hole
In the bed where we slept
Now it's growing cold
Hey Jesse, your face in the place
Where we lay by the hearth
All apart it hangs on my heart
And I'm keeping the light on the stairs
No I'm not scared
I wait for you
Hey Jesse, it's lonely
Come home
Jesse, the floors and the boards
Recalling your steps
And I remember too
All the pictures are fading
They're shaded in gray
But I still set a place on the table at noon
And I'm leaving the light on the stairs
And I'm not scared
I wait for you
Hey Jesse, I'm lonely
Come home
Jesse the spread on the bed
It's like when you left
I kept it for you
All the blues and the greens
Have been recently cleaned
And I seemingly knew
Hey Jess, me and you
Will swallow the light on the stair
I'll fix up my hair
We'll sleep unaware
Hey Jesse, it's lonely
Come home

This song must mean something to everyone. Everyone has a Jesse to long for.
I have a Jessica if that counts
Perfect. Hope she comes home.
i have a jesse and i don't know how he feels about me anymore
and some of us live with them
That’s deep...
My “Jesse” is my late sister.
Roberta Flack. All I can say is that She belongs in the Hall of Fame.
Exactly what Hall of Fame. Making stuff up much ?
Hi Steve.
Maybe the baseball hall of fame.
@@steve19149 Are you slow or something? MUSIC Hall of Fame, obviously. When people and/or play musical instruments, it's called music.
@@lelehart3 MUSIC Hall of Fame didn't come to mind? Really?
Of course it did. I was being sassy. She is an incredible singer and I cherish her gift to everyone.
Very few songs can move me to tears. Jesse sung by Roberta Flack is one of them!
My so go to now... A lot...
Makes me cry every time.
Same here.
Janis Ian's version does it for me...absolutely heartbreaking...
@@birdsfan57 I like Shirley Bassey's version also--she sang it on her show before she had Janis Ian perform At Seventeen, and recorded it on one of her albums I believe.
This is the most beautiful haunting song and voice I have ever heard. Dedicated to anyone missing someone.
My favorite Roberta song. Few artists can make a song there own, with an indelible mark that lasts forever. Thanks Ms. Flack.
This is about Janis Ian as much as it's about Roberta Flack. I love Roberta's version, but hey! Credit where credit's due.
The best version ever. Thank you Roberta x
It made me cry!
Always..😢
The Incomparable Roberta Flack. ...
...beyond words...
Much love and Respect....

My favorite soothing song when the heart is longing for lost loved ones.
Definitely!!
It's a pretty special song
#RobertaFlack didn’t get the recognition she deserved . Roberta is timeless , effortless, soultry. This is what it means to be a DIVA
That’s so true of both Roberta Flack and the composer Janis Ian. Her version is just as beautifully sung and arranged as this one.

This is her concert appearance with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra in Edmonton, 1975. Beautiful performance by Roberta, moving and expressive. I prefer this live version. What a gorgeous song. Been a fan of her all my life. My respects and esteem added to the rest. What a treasure of a singer.
This song always haunts me. I love it. It is so soothing. I love Roberta Flack.
she is a true legend Roberta flack what a voice what a beautiful sad song jesse come home takes me back to when I was kid in the late seventies and early eighties . and hearing that classic song on radio 2 .for kids back then music had a meaning and feeling and understanding . nowadays kids have to listening to singers with noise sound effects and no meaning within their songs. I am glad I am not a kid anymore .
I agree. Most of of what is called music today can't hold a candle to the pre 90's!
I loved it too growing up...
What a voice. It touches my soul.
The lyrics are so beautiful, they flow flawlessly from one thought, one word, one picture to the next. Ms Flacks voice; her passion, soul and command are magnetic. This is a masterpiece.
Remember: Janis Ian wrote it.
@@nancynancyr258 ...and she owns it!
you'd be hardpressed to find someone write something so poetic, and yet vulnerable in today's music industry.
Janis Ian wrote and sang this song quite brilliantly .Roberta Flack performs it to perfection here aswell. Two amazingly talented Ladies for sure ✨🎙️🎹💃🏻💃🏽🌟☺️👌✨
I've been a big fan for years, Jesse is my favorite song. Her voice is so beautiful.
This was my favorite song until I lost my 19 year old niece, Jesse, in a car crash.. I still love the song, but it is hard to listen to.
This has always been one of my favorite Janis Ian songs. This cover by Roberta Flack is beautiful, and it's Ms. Flack's version that made the song a hit, but you might be surprised at how much you like the song done by the songwriter herself -- it's stunning, too.
the purest voice ever. amazing woman.
Truly!!!
Just Great. I heard it first in 1977. It still is as powerful as it has ever been.
Respects to the max......the lady with the golden voice. Thank you Mr Rhein for sharing the great Roberta Flak.....timeless classic
Good old days, with good old singers....
Cant beat this...

TOUCHES THE HEART SO SO SO DEEP...
Saddened by the news of her recent health diagnosis. Roberta Flack is truly a force to be reckoned with. Her voice is so fluid and effortless. This is one of my many favorite songs of hers. She is an inspiration ✨️ ❤️
translator ang-pol: """Zasmucony wiadomością o jej niedawnej diagnozie stanu zdrowia. Roberta Flack to naprawdę siła, z którą trzeba się liczyć. Jej głos jest taki płynny i bez wysiłku. To jedna z wielu moich ulubionych jej piosenek. Ona jest inspiracją"""
Oby żyła 100 lat. Kochamy ją przecież.
I'm 23, and I'm obsessed with her music... She is truly amazing there will never be another artist like her.
Mathis can sing the telephone book - this man is a fantastic singer; perhaps one of the best, if not the best, singers of all time. Listening from the beautiful, tranquil Islands of The Bahamas 🏝️🌅🏖️🇧🇸
On this day in 1973 {September 22nd} Roberta Flack's "Jesse" entered Billboard's Hot Top 100 chart; eventually it peaked at #30 and spent 9 weeks on the Top 100...
It was surrounded by #1 records; Ms. Flack's two previous charted records both reached #1, "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" {#1 for 6 weeks} and "Killing Me Softly With His Words" {#1 for 5 weeks}...
And then her next release after "Jesse" was "Feel Like Makin' Love", which was #1 for one week...
What a voice
this song became even more special for me when Ms Flack sang the song after i screamed "Jesse!!" in a quiet auditorium after she finished singing. She responded with a gentle, "I beg your pardon", and i screamed even louder "Jesse", next thing, she started playing the piano and started singing Jesse. Needless to say my concert attendance was complete and my heart was whole because its my ultimate favourite song of hers.
The best!!I was 13 when this song played on the radio back then and still is great and with great style!!!
WOW WOW WOW !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
From a mad keen 75yo Aussie fan.
Timeless and eternally beautiful
My mum, rest in peace, sang this to me when I was a kid at bedtime and whenIwas sick as a kid,now when I hear I cry, love this song❤❤❤
How moving! She is still singing that lovesong into your heart ♥️
i just really love her voice and the way she flows with the lyrics. I can't help feeling emotional and teary eyed when I listen to this especially after my husband passed away many years ago. Roberta Flack is a legend!
A singer of songs..outstanding

So lovely, her voice and the lyrics are so beautiful. Thanks, Roberta
Roberta Flack has a way of weaving emotion into every note of 'Jesse.' Her voice and the heartfelt lyrics make it a truly beautiful experience. Thanks indeed, Roberta, for sharing your talent with the world

Roberta was one the seventies most memorable soul voices, this classic just puts her into the top ten.
This god gifted woman got even one more ace up her sleeve...DONNY HATHAWAY! She and DONNY were the duo MARVIN and TAMMI never really reached!
RIP Donny, Marvin and Tammi.
Mats Nilsson,
I got to see Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway perform together at an outdoor concert in DC in 1972. She had just finished a big tour and talked about how happy she was, getting time to rest and be with her family, and it showed. (It turned out that she had grown up in Green Valley, about a mile or two from where I was living at the time, and I drove past her house there on my way to work every morning.) That is one of the most memorable live performances I can remember attending. They were great together. It was so sad that he died so young.
(Judy E, if you even remember me, I'm sorry I was such a clueless jerk who did not know any better, but I remember you, too.)
And written by the brilliant Janis Ian.
ianman15,
Thank you for giving the songwriter credit. Without songwriters, whatever would singers do?
Janis Ian's version is absolute poignant perfection...
I love Janis Ian but Roberta did a good job.
iannman15Perota mighty white of ya!
@@ArcoZakus why in the world would they say that? So IGNORANT.
This song never fails to bring me to tears!
Very pretty song; I can't remember the last time I heard any radio station play it.
As a shattered young lad, this song helped me grieve for a beloved friend and sister. I imagined her husband feeling these words. Deeply moving, however you hear it. Bless Roberta and that magical music she makes.
So beautiful.
Have always loved this song
Ms Roberta Flack - the real Queen of Soul

Janis Ian´s Jesse. Such a beautiful song and a wonderful voice of Roberta. Perfect.
So moving!!
So beautiful. .
After all these years, this song still tug at my heart - to express the love for someone thru word and music. The incomparable Roberta Flack. Saw her in Honolulu in 1973. Love you girl.
Please, don't forget the author of this beautiful song: JANIS IAN. Words and music. And her version is the best, in my opinion. Roberta Flack sings like angels in heaven. Thanks to Janis and Roberta for this gift.
Effortless and just Beautiful ❤
You've captured it perfectly! Roberta Flack's performance in "Jesse" is indeed effortless and exquisitely beautiful. Her talent shines brightly in every note. 🎶❤️
@@CugateMedia Grand Morning😊she is a true original. I'm so glad I had the chance to see her live. I wish this Queen well as she is having some health issues.
The Fabulous Janis Ian wrotr and recorded this song. Many versions by many people have been recorded. But none like the Beautiful Roberta Flack

This is awesome
Indeed, it is! Roberta Flack's rendition of "Jesse" is absolutely awesome, and her voice is pure magic. 🎶✨
Stunningly beautiful.
Stunningly beautiful indeed! Roberta Flack's music has a way of touching our souls.
Gorgeous!
Absolutely stunning! Roberta Flack's voice is pure magic. ✨
After this I can't believe Jesse can ignore... not possible!
It would be heartless. 😥
It's true, Roberta Flack's rendition of "Jesse" is incredibly powerful. The song's emotional depth makes it difficult to ignore or forget.
Nigdy dosyć tej piosenki, tego wykonania.Wciąż uwielbiam i tęsknię za głosem Roberty Flack.
i don't know why, but i'm crying every time I hear this song - so beautiful and soultouching.
Music has that magical ability to touch our souls and bring tears of emotion. Roberta Flack's voice in "Jesse" is truly heart-stirring. 💕🎵
I grew up in the 60s and 70s, but my exposure to all the wonderful music was from the radio. I saw few performances. I never knew Roberta Flack played the piano.
Me neither!
Take me to the river
This is just beautiful. She’s always been one of my favorite female vocalists
Roberta Flack's music is timeless, and she's rightfully earned her place as a favorite female vocalist for many. 'Jesse' is a prime example of her stunning talent.
Do you notice the immensely difficult alternating measure and her offbeat singing especially in the beginning of the song? I wonder how you can play this with ease and flawlressly in a live setting?! I am a full-blown full-time pianist & singer myself. I couldn't do it. She is so far out and oustanding and her musicians too!
+PianoGesang Did you happen to see the documentary on Roberta? It's really god. It explains her musical background. She was a music major and graduated from Howard U. She was classically trained and was a school teacher. It does explain her voice..in a way...
I had no idea, thanks!

With feeling n emotion, one that expresses true sentiment.
Yes.hmmm
@@copperbluej1997 I just saw it. Amazing. Inspiring. It explains a lot where her music is concerned. When you watch her in action on stage, what you learn in the documentary explains a lot.
I love this voice sooo much! 🥰
Makes me cry.
I cry 🥲 every time I hear it!!! Incredibly BEAUTIFUL ❤️
Music has this incredible ability to stir our emotions, doesn't it? Roberta Flack's "Jesse" is a masterpiece, and the fact that it brings tears speaks volumes about its beauty and emotional impact. Such a touching and incredibly beautiful song. ❤️🌹🎵
The exact length of the notes, by Roberta Flack and the echo that they leave when they end at the precise moment, make this singer unique in her style, no one has achieved this perfection with the voice in popular music, that I only remember power in the singer Maria Callas..
I love this song so much. I sang it in 1974 at the Miss South Dakota pageant.
This is Carla Meiers making the comment!!
A special Thank You to you H. Memo Rhein...Hey Jesse, I'm lonely come home.
This beautiful song was written by the great Janis Ian and I know many versions of it but this one is my favorite. Roberta Flack is special, she makes me melt inside...
The documentary on Roberta is very interesting and explains a lot about her voice. It's on Showtime, on demand.
Just Perfect.xx❤️❤️❤️
A magical tune, so beautiful and says it all
"Jesse" by Roberta Flack is indeed a magical tune that touches the soul with its beauty and heartfelt lyrics. 🌟🎶
Just a beautiful , talented, devoted lady, and a heart piercing song, and we are reduced to looking inside and wiping the tears of, what, love, tragedy, regret, hopes, alive or dashed, just life...so wonderful.
so fitting for my dear little buddy, jesse , 5 years old, who was tragically killed in a car accident. one moment there, the next moment gone. been a lifetime of missing him.
+laptopsaysno so sorry for your loss..
So sad. A special angel.
So sorry, no parent should ever bury a child. Even if your "Jesse" isn't your child it is still so sad. My heart is with you! Love and Peace, Skip
i am so blessed to have all your kind words. we also lost a 5 year old girl to cancer in our family. being the older one meant these two followed me like shadows and repeated everything I said. those were some of the happiest times in my life and that love has never been replaced. bless you all. you made me smile knowing people understand.
i meant to say "as well lost" we lost two little angels at 5 years each.
This song makes me want to know someone named Jesse. Beautiful song and a more beautiful voice.
This song is so haunting.
There's a haunting elegance to 'Jesse' by Roberta Flack that makes it unforgettable. It's a song that lingers in the mind long after it ends.
Very favorite song !
Just heard that Roberta Flack was recently diagnosed with ALS…
devastating news !!!! Prayers, please!
Listened to Janis Ian, the composer and lyricist of "Jesse", last night. Both ladies put passion and pathos into their rendition. Roberta had a more melodic voice, but Janis evoked the pain and longing more eloquently, at least in my opinion. I think each person hears and feels song renditions in different ways, depending on life experiences. No matter who sings this song, it is beautiful, haunting and full of longing for a lost, long gone lover.
You've made a great observation. Both Roberta Flack and Janis Ian infused 'Jesse' with their individual passion and pathos, creating two remarkable renditions. The beauty of music is that it can evoke different emotions for each listener
@@CugateMedia -considering the fact that Janis Ian composed both lyrics and melody for "Jesse", gives her a one up over other artists who cover her song. I totally agree with your last sentence.
oooooh. that got me good.🥲
As a Jesse, I prefer this song over Jessie’s Girl. One of the rare songs that move me every time I hear it.
Such a great sentimental song...like a 19th Century ballad...
Several people commented on the lyrics. Let's not forget that singer-songwriter Janis Ian wrote the song.
Only the best!!!
Bravo!
I'm leavin' the light on the stairs...I'm lonely...come home....
Every time I listen to this song, it NEVER fail to give me goosebumps.
Roberta Flack's 'Jesse' has that incredible power to send shivers down the spine every time. It's a testament to her remarkable talent.
JMC you're always in my thoughts.

My brother in law drowned in 1985 and my wife in her grief would wander the house looking for him, this song reminds me of that.
My new favorite Roberta Flack song.
Roberta Flack's 'Jesse' is truly something special. It's amazing how a song can become an instant favorite. This one's on repeat for me!
