I just love these roundtables. It makes me feel like a voyeur at a dinner party...just quietly soaking in all these cool stories and just happy to be there.
Yeah, it's too bad they don't have them for different occupations like a doctors roundtable, or roofers or sea captains or whatever. It would be a nice way to mentor and help future generations like sharing the trade secrets.
This made me respect producers a whole lot more. I don't think people realize how important they really are for delivering an enjoyable end product. Just look at all the goodness these guys kind of are/were responsible for. The little background stories are gold for film geeks.
Darren Aronofsky is awesome guy, he is a great director but is also a really good person offscreen. I remember when Cyclone Sandy hit the long island , he was there directing his film Noah and his set was completely destroyed. Anyone else would be worrying about his film and his problems but instead, this guy fills his car with pizzas and drives around to feed people who lost their homes and were in a complete shock. Little things like that says a lot about a person.
I dont think it's correct to say most people would be more worried about their film than all the human suffering in the area they were filming it that suddenly came about from a disaster like Sandy. Its essentially praising someone for being normal and human. This is the problem I have with the way we talk about these things in the 21st century. We have made normal human actions like helping someone and turned them into a heroic thing when they should just be the norm and in fact usually are (despite what the media portrays)
Caroline Cox nah I think you could delve into how much control they have on the story. Times they added something wouldn't have been there without them. Every director will have a different way of working with their editor, so yer a little bit of name dropping. Get one of Finchers editors on there and they will talk about a buzzard method only he and Allan Bell use. I honestly think it would be fascinating.
@Caroline Cox - speaking as an editor, this is wrong + doesn't help perception of editors in film. They have the power to alter an entire story, emotion or feeling with one simple cut. I can assure you that your favourite film - whatever it is - was all pulled together perfectly thanks to the editing.
What a fantastically great answer from the La La Land producer about, "What Makes a Great Producer" how his answer related to what being a producer entailed with La La Land.
I had tears in my eyes when they started talking about how the filmmakers could not put their cameras down after the film shoots should have been over.
I'm currently working as an assistant editor for a filmmaker and we've been working on a few videos for the past couple days. Today we finished them and he was really pleased with the final edit and he was very grateful. That feeling that Hughes Winborne said he felt after showing Denzel the edited version of Fences and Denzel got emotional-- that's a great feeling knowing you helped bring the Director's vision to life.
11:07 Now HE is a dream producer. For any director. He really gets it. Wow I want him. Answer to "What makes a great producer" Damien was damn lucky to have him.
One of the most interesting round tables i have seen. Great mix of talent. Especially with matt and darren having directed movies also. Also just to hear them tell stories, they are so great at it. I never thought of them in that way.
black swan was a very tough role, i respect darren as a visionary director but he does push his talent (actors/actresses) and sometimes actors or actresses get big. when they do, it can be hard for them to go back to a passion project where the director can be more ruthless in their approach to their vision when theyve been accustomed to another environment.....i cant say i relate directly, but indirectly through my work on film crews.
As a filmmaker you have many hats, but one dream. You are a lone wolf, a person that does something out of the norm. A person that looks at the world differently. His action speaks louder than words and people are magnetize by his actions. It causes curiosity as well as resentment for breaking the norm but at the end that is what filmmaking is all about.
1:38 I should go watch Godfather II again. I never loved that picture the way I loved the first one. Maybe it's because there's just so many more iconic scenes in 1: - The elder Vito Corleone performance by Brando. - The opening scene with that angle from behind Brando to the phrase, "I'm gonna make him an offer." - The Dead Horse - The assassination attempt on Vito. - The killing of the cop - The Mafia Summit. - The Death of Vito - The Killing of the heads of the Five Families - The closing of the door on Kay.

I hope THR reads the comments, many people, unlike most UA-cam comments, have some great input. One thing that stands out to me is the interviewers taking on what Isabelle Huppert and Amy Adams had brought up that they should ask the more powerful players about the issues of colourist, racism, sexism, ageism, ableism, gender and wage issues to these tables. Often asking the person who is subject to being cast makes no sense. There is an audient for everything and it's the producers, executives that make that change. I know I'll be labelled a SJW, don't care, I know the messed up views behind that, I just appreciate the comments this time around and thought others may be interested.
bluebeanbaby the thing we don't know is which table was shot first. This may have been done first but uploaded after since actors are usually put up first. But doesn't mean they'd ever ask
my one movie is the departed as well, and let me tell ya'll why, jack Nicholson is my favorite actor plus the rest of the cast is iconic, i know most of the lines, i have it on dvd and my love started when there was no internet for days in my house and i would watch it not out boredom but because it made me forget what was wrong, made me engage with it every time, yes! every time literally, i will always have that movie with me.
Good job on asking them about diversity. Please tell me there'll be a studio executives table where you do ask them about it. Confront them in the face. Maybe even show the clip from the actress roundtable.
What happened to the audio at 46 minutes 49 seconds? That's an error within this release. It was excellent also. Very fun to watch concepts and challenging questions spoken about freely. Good job. Chicken soup for the soul.
Will there be a writers' roundtable? Chazelle, Jenkins and Lonergan wrote their own movies but they already appeared at the directors' table and they're kind of the stars of the season.
Surprised no-one went for Tom Hanks' Cast Away as a desert island choice. Could come in quite handy, especially if you have a surplus of Fed Ex goods at hand.
Carl Creighton He was explaining how the best people should be hired for the job, no matter what what their skin colour is. And as a POC I agree with Damon's statement.
If I have to watch something a thousand times over and over again the answer is Star Wars, Wizard of Oz, Princess Bride, Raiders of the Lost Ark, etc. Noone is watching One flew over the cuckoo's nest over and over again as great as that movie is.
Doug Liman takes credit for Bourne all the time yet we know Frank Marshall got that first movie on the finish line, then Paul Greengrass took it to another level. What we know of Bourne now wasnt really polished until Supremacy(hand held kinetic/quick cuts/kinetic action
Richard Westerlind exactly what I was thinking. They always rip off foreign films and hardly give them the recognition they deserve. I love the departed but should've given credit where it due.
Q Q4k lmao the funny thing is Tom Cruise has been nominated for 3 Oscars (Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire and Magnolia) and Will Smith has been nominated twice (Ali and Pursuit of Happyness) and Will Smith has actually been apart of the round table in 2016
I just love these roundtables.
It makes me feel like a voyeur at a dinner party...just quietly soaking in all these cool stories and just happy to be there.
Aaaaaasaaaassssâ

I love these discussions with the Cinematographers, Directors and Producers. Fascinating.

Last Mile thanks for sharing this dude
I never got a Pizza.... Needs more diversity.

Thanks for not interrupting the producers.
Do an editors roundtable PLEASE :D
Ben Allan yes please! have they ever done one?
This needs to happen. Editors should have their spotlight.

I'd love to see a round table of actors, producers and directors from different projects together. I think that would be fascinating!
These people really make the movie amazing. The points they made in this roundtable are beautiful and inspiring
Where is the screenwriters one?!!!
Search! I’ve watched at least two of them.
Something about the moderator's voice is so compelling...I'd listen to an audiobook or podcast by him any day
I love stuff like this, just a group of people who are generally articulate, who sit down and talk with no added fluff.

Is it me or does Darren Aronofsky look like a leaner version of Christian Bale in 'American Hustle' ?
He's fucking jennifer lawrence so theres a similarity
purplenurps 😂😂
I see Steve Jobs
I immediately saw bradley cooper
Omg...you're so right.
It's really nice hearing from producers. They don't often get much limelight. Nice one.

I know her feeling about the Departed movie cause I get sucked into watching it every time and I know I'll never get sick of it
Matt Damon chose the best film to take, hands down.
schlöer grape Manchester by the Sea is still amazing

man i love watching these round tables
Thanks to The Hollywood Reporter. I always wondered what 'a producer' does. Great questions.
More screenwriters Roundtable please? 😃 gotta love Matt
Where is the screenwriters one?!!!
Seb Francis Shanda yaaaaasssss!
These roundtables approach Hollywood to the people. Kudos

I love the Departed too. I'm gonna make a great movie like that soon!!!
why did u delete the other one? anyway, bummed that they did not ask the question that Amy Adams suggested in the Actress roundtable. :(
I think it's because they shot this one before the actress roundtable :(
I was hoping for this question too!
:( shame
They didn't delete it, it's just unlisted. I can still see it in my watch history
ok
Oscar best Actor: Casey Affleck, "Manchester by the Sea."
Would love to see you guys get the Documentary filmmakers together and do one of these!
Havey they did!!!
if nothing else, Darren Aronofsky proves that Christian Bale would have made a great Steve Jobs.
Ethan Megenis-Clarke what was wrong with Fassbender? He rocked it
Bill Yobfas Literally nothing, Steve Jobs was my favourite movie of 2015 but Christian Bale was up for the role for the longest time.
I think maybe Darren himself could have been a pretty great Steve Jobs...?
If a biopic of Darren Aronofsky were made, Christian Bale would be a shoe-in.

Matt Damon is my favourite actor simply because he chose GODFATHER PART II.
That's fuckin' mandatory.
Terrible actor and bad head.
likable human.,
Victor K. lol even Affleck said he's carried him throughout Matt's career.....lol Fuuuuuck
TrashWang Shabbaz huh? When did carry him? Before Gigli?
Matt Damon is so smart despite being younger than most in the group with no experience in directing.
I think I would like to have lunch and get life advice from Marc Platt
Producers have as much love for the arts as the people who create the films.
Thanks God we are seeing less mr bean pics and talking
Aronofsky lookin' like Steve Jobs
The moderators weren't as bad this time around.....
Good job on asking them about diversity. Please tell me there'll be a studio executives table where you do ask them about it. Confront them in the face. Maybe even show the clip from the actress roundtable.
Ooh your such a hero
Fuck off. Please.
Why do you want to annoy the studio executives with a clip from perhaps the most vapid people on Earth? The actresses roundtable were a shame.
Darren did it off our fellow actors.
Darren Aronofsky sounds like Edward Snowden
Watched. Listened. Learned(hopefully). Thanks:)
you didnt learn shit.
i learnt a lot! Oh so much!
Victor K. You're on to me Vic!

do a cinematographers round table please!!! that would be amazing!!!

"And when we’re talking about diversity, you do it in the casting of the film" - Matt Damon
Why do people still bring this up? That quote was completely taken out of context.

Am I the only one who noticed that they uploaded it and deleted it like 2 days ago?
Also- First!!
Jackson Gondo No, i already watched this episode too.
I wonder if they edited something out hmm..
Jackson Gondo Yeah wtf I had top comment on the previous one.
The other video had a video editing, that had to be changed. The sign at 0.01 said "Actors" before it is corrected now to "Producers".
Thank you! I thought I was going crazy haha

46:50 > 46:53, a shot is out of audio sync.
Listen to Amy Adams!!

the best one, what a great table
i want to see Tom Cruise - Leonardo Dicaprio - Brad Pitt - Will Smith - Johnny Depp in a Roundtable NOW !
u silly girl, tom cruise and will smith will never get nods for a oscar, meaning they wont ever see this table, find more actors to like
Will Smith is in a round table this year actually... so there's that.
i want to see them together is what i mean
Q Q4k lmao the funny thing is Tom Cruise has been nominated for 3 Oscars (Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire and Magnolia) and Will Smith has been nominated twice (Ali and Pursuit of Happyness) and Will Smith has actually been apart of the round table in 2016

The diversity in this round table is astounding...
Max Bahneman yet the directors, actors and actresses round tables all had POC
Antonio Brooks true but I'm looking forward to seeing producers who are POC, trans, differently abled, think that'd be dope.
Wow
What would a producer being disabled add to anything? Why is that even something to draw attention to, let alone look forward to?
It wouldn't that is most likely impossible since producing is incredibly difficult work.
Time Bandits! Great choice!
Galloway is so inorganic! Around 21:30.
Jackie is such an underrated movie
I feel like I watched this about 6 months ago. Is that possible?
