True intellect is being able to have such a high level, nuanced conversation in your second, or possibly third language. Ralph Fiennes is clearly a highly intelligent man too, but Waltz is something else.
He was nominated; Tommy Lee Jones won, for The Fugitive. It was one of those years where any of at least four of the nominees could have won and it would have made sense. I would have probably have voted for Fiennes if I were an Academy member, but I can understand voting for Jones. His performance elevated that movie to another level, although the same is true of John Malkovich in In the Line of Fire.
@@susieusmaximus5330 yeah fine, but come on... Tommy Lee Jones performance was NOTHING spectacular. Compared to Ralph Fiennes it is not even a competition. His performance in Schindlers List is one if not the best performance ever done
These are two terrific actors. Great to see them sitting here talking shop. Mr Waltz's depiction of Colonel Hans Landa is one of the most amazing performances I've ever seen. Simply brilliant.
Waltz has such a good grasp of the english language. The only small tell that he is not a native english speaker is a mild generic accent that is almost nondiscernable. Because you can't place it, it gives him away. Christoph is one of his country's national treasures. Highly intelligent, selfeffacing, serious and funny at the drop of a hat.
I've been a huge fan of Fiennes since I was a teenage girl when The English Patient came out and I thought he was so so sooooo handsome. I quickly realized in addition to that he is an extremely talented actor who almost always picks interesting, dynamic roles(Maid In Manhattan being a rare exception). It's always a treat seeing him interviewed. Waltz is an awesome actor too. I just don't have the same lifelong connection to him like I do Fiennes.
These two men are very similar in how they can act that fine line between immensely evil and monstrous, and charming and sweet. That seems such a fine balance I believe only the most talented can pull it off.
Haha, well said. "Pouring lukewarm coffee on each other - that's what we're doing here, now!" Neither of them wants to do the obvious ass-kissing that happens at award shows. But they obviously admire and respect each other's work, and want to genuinely compliment without sounding vapid/cliched. It's cool to see.
