Wow, your droid looks amazing! Love the colour scheme and design! Thank you for such a helpful and interesting video 🙌. I’m feeling very inspired and excited to make plans for my R2 droid! 😊
EXCELLENT JOB! Looks so well balanced, love your color pattern design! Perfection on the weathering, I love a dirty droid. I also love that you identify this droid as programed female.
SO GOOD! I love my little C1 unit, but he definitely looks too new. Can't wait to give him a custom paint job and some weathering! Thanks for the video!
This is an amazing job. The wash instantly changes the look of the droid and the chips add such a nice detail. I’ve seen videos on layering metallic paint first, masking some areas using toothpaste or even mustard, and then spraying the final color coat on top wiping away the toothpaste after it dries. You might be interested in that technique, however, I think your method of just using some metallic paint was just as good, and probably a whole lot easier. Anyway, amazing job and keep up the good work!
Awesome tutorial! Something I've found when dealing with gloss paint; if you find a color you like, but it's only in gloss, just go over the paint job lightly with a scouring pad and it will knock the gloss down to a more matte/satin finish.
Thank you so much for doing this video. I’m going to be getting an R series droid from WDW Galaxy’s Edge in September and I hope to add some paint and weathering to give my droid more of a story
Just a toy? Man its a Masterpiece something that turns us "nerds" and fans on its the best thing we could imagine oh and there are secret plans on it so its not just a toy like you said
This is amazing ! I'm heading there in 3 weeks to buy my own and because of YOUR video, I am definitely going to repaint. I have some basic skills, but yours is really awesome mate !
im gonna head there in like 4 years cos i aint payin 1200€ since i need 600€ to fly there from europe, much fir the hotels, the entrance ticket and more merchandise im gonna wait till 2025 for paris one
It looks like a movie prop. Well done! You gave me a lot of new thoughts for the one I’m going to custom. I think I’m going to try dry brushing for the weathering though. Right now I’m purposely scratching it up before I paint because I think it gives more character. I got the backpack so can’t wait to go back and have people be like Whoah! When I finish the painting
Did I see your at Galaxy's Edge yesterday? I had an R4 I tried to make as mismatched as possible. I was bummed I had to get matching legs. Instead of using the box I was carrying it like a baby. You had an amazingly painted Droid in a transparent backpack. This is a great video, that aging process is exactly what I wanted to do with mine.
haha! it was not me lol thats rad though. cant wait to see what ya come up with. my AP expired in august, I'm taking a Disney break, I'mm be back in jan when resistance open!
There should be a dealer outside in an alleyway who gives you broken/ damaged looking parts you can use in the depot in trade for random trinkets, the rings from cupcakes, buttons, etc.
very good job! I'm going to galaxy's edge and making an r5 unit but i don't know if I want to do something custom or a r5-d4 or the blue r5 unit they have there but overall, very nice job!
Great job, thanks so much for posting. Really great design. Psuedo Satellite mentioned the toothpaste/mustard technique to get a paint chipping effect. I know you didn't do that, but on your final details on the face, the masked edges contain some of that worn look (13:08 in the vid). When you pulled the tape off the edges were all straight and perfect. How did you accomplish your worn effect on those masked parts?
not weird, totally legit question. I haven't tried but this is why I think it's not going to achieve the worn effect: The acrylic is thicker and even with a bit of water its still thick enough to get pushed in the crevasses and corners of the droids detail. It also sticks better than watercolor, allowing you to either rub off the paint (for a cool effect) or let it dry a bit, THEN rub it off (which is a really cool effect). Thats ultimately what you want, you're basically simulating dirt and aging with paint. However i'd give it a shot, I think you wont ruin anything trying!
Thanks for the reply, one more thing, what is like the metallic paint thing and how would I go about finding it, I’m new to this painting thing I usually draw digitally. Is their any substitute to the metallic paint if I can’t find it due to the situation
Did you have to use any sort of primer first? I never did this yet, but plan to paint some red r2 parts with gold. (Sorta like what you did here with the legs). Would you recommend using primer for that and if so, what kind works best on plastics?
umm i've been trying to figure that out myself, Ive been fiddling with my R4 for months now. it seems that just inverting the concept works, so white instead of darks in the crevasses, but still not %100. although the enamel silver chips (used very sparingly) super helps a bit.
Realistically paint chipping on droids would have white under and if it chipped even more then it would be metal, do what you want with that information
good question, silver model paint, like used for this guy but even MORE sparingly. and if it has some color, very faint washes will go far. However if you truly wanna add something to a black droid, which is usually empire or first order...gloss that baby!!! Imperials keep their droids super clean!
try painters tape? or just regular masking tape, I wouldn't use duct tape, it leaves behind the adhesive. That painters should work, really press it down. I just spray kinda far away from the spots i'm painting, it gives an even coat, and avoids the paint to clump or drip. good luck! Hope this helped.
Great job! Looks amazing. Which Testors metallic paint did you use? I caught that you said not to use silver, but it looks like the Testors paint is silver. Is it steel, or gunmetal, or something else? I know they have lots of metallic options and it can really make or break the paint job.
What type of spray paint are you using and do you have to prime at all? If not what if you were going to change a major color. Like Chopper's orange dome to a white, silver or gunmetal gray?
oh i'm not sure! thats a bit past what my capabilities are. I would actually love to be able to make my own droid sounds, but again thats epically past my knowledge
love the video, a bit of constructive criticism if youll take it. Was hard to watch the parts where you were holding the camera and weathering, got me a little motion sick
A good finished piece but your skipping of the initial weathering and slow pacing made this almost tedious to watch. I ramped it up to over twice speed.
This is definitely the best weathering job I’ve seen so far. Great painting tips and fantastic job on this R5. Looking forward to your next project.
hey thanks! going this weekend so we shall see!

fantastic job, this video may have convinced me to build a droid the next time I'm in Galaxy's Edge
totally! it's so fun!
doo it!
Outstanding paint job. You took a toy and turned it into a believable movie prop.
Hay! thanks a lot!
I’m using this for inspiration. I just got my droid and I’m ready to make it weathered.

Thanks a heap man!
thnx!!!!!
Well done! My daughter and I got our first Droid yesterday. When j get home, I intend to do the same (Custom Paint Job) Thanks for sharing!
I honestly love this. I think u did an amazing job of making this go from looking like a toy to an actual r2 unit

You just earned yourself a subscriber. I’ve been wondering how to make the chipped “metal” effect.
Looks awesome, working on some weathering on mine!
excellent! I'd love to see it when it's finished!
Brilliant, can't wait to get my own droid and do something similar.
Edit: Please make another one when you can.
Great desighn almost reminds me of u9-c4 from the clone wars animated series
Huge fan of your art! I’m going to build a droid one day, hopefully. I love the idea of blocking out the design in Photoshop first.
This is so cool. Thanks 👍
This was so helpful! Thanks!
It looks incredible!! Could use some tips on paints and what not that will allow me to do a BB-8 unit.
I'm not super into BB's however I know there are a few great weathering/paint process vids on BB units.
Amazing
I'm gonna go nuts once I get mine
Woah! Made this a long time ago! Now I have my droid weathered and painted!
Kickass!
freakin sweet......I got an R6 myself
Thank you fellow Mubo Droid Builder! Working on my first droid going to have her ready for the March meetup. Will you be there?
I believe I will be! great cant wait to see it!
I hope to get one soon

Weird question, could watercolor work for grunging because it’s very thin and spreads easilly

Its kinda lame that they give the R5 the same noises as the R2, even though the R5 units in the movies make different noises..

they had personality chips you could buy separately that gave different droid voices.
