I only realized about a week ago how much Madonna did to ruin pop music - I had forgotten about her - she's pretty much the blueprint for everything wrong with it. What's funny is that her obsolescence was actually built into her career by her stupid strategy based on exploiting current trends and running them into the ground, basically a slash and burn technique, so she wound up making herself irrelevant in the end.
What else is funny is that girl pop stars who imitate her strategy can't even have careers anymore. Billie Eilish already seems passe yet she's barely 20 - I actually thought she was older. Lorde's been done for a while now and she's barely 25 lol, Royals has 896M views while her newest single Solar Power has 26M, the other singles have even less . The reinvention trick doesn't work any more they just change girls. Feminism lol.
The sexual provocation bs doesn't work anymore since they have to compete with actual porn, and people don't watch porn for the music. The political controversy crap doesn't work anymore for a similar reason .

Reinvention is great but not if you continue to discredit everyone and step on their toes, and plus if you're truly a private person like a Lorde or a Billie. Madonna was determined to air out all her most unpleasant qualities and only the unpleasant parts. Also, it's pretty pointless to rank a person's humility or ego, but I'd rather share dinner with Gaga and Rihanna before even stepping 200 yards near their biggest influence.

My take on Madonna is that she released a couple fantastic early pop albums and her sheer volume of sales and pop culture influence created a situation where she would be taken seriously by the public and herself. As a result, it's been another 30+ years of her trying way too hard to be a socially meaningful artist.

I used to be a huge blind fab but now I just like her and I do respect her very much as an artist and pop icon but I understand the hate. She has become really pretentious and a real cartoon of her young self. I can totally see now why people see her as uncool.

Obviously Madonna's biggest problem is that her singles are "classic" - ie: already known by all but her actual albums (the things they supposedly represented) are oddly bland, co-written, mechanical, underwhelming. It's partly the 80s studio technology, but it's also most certainly her and her team of co-writers and producers whoever/wherever/whatever they are.
Secondly, she sorta heralded in (well, MTV I guess), but she heralded in an era of producer/studio oriented video pop where the album felt like some suburban piece of plastic somewhere you just wouldn't want to listen to - or be coldly unimpressed by if you did. It was an era when there were two major streams of audio exhibition; singles on radio and music television and full album statements. Madonna hasn't and never would release a record like Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd, because outside of the dance-pop or radio ballad market, the album is (almost) a secondary piece of marketing to her real presence.
