CRITICAL FAILURE - The Hitachi C10RJ Jobsite Table Saw is Broken

  • UPDATE: The second one failed in a similar way within the 90-day return window. I now have a Ridgid that has held up to job site use for a couple of years.
My one-month-old Hitachi C10RJ Jobsite Table Saw failed today. The lever that locks the fence into place broke rendering the saw unusable on the jobsite. Thankfully I was able to exchange the saw at Lowes with no issues. I did get the same saw and in about 3 hours from the time the saw broke I was back up and running. I'm very disappointed in the poor quality control that led to the Hitachi C10RJ failure. I hope this was a fluke but I will keep UA-cam update as to how my second C10RJ Table Saw Performs

I just bought the Metabo C10RJSM.. What Ridgid did you buy? I wanted the R3514, but, after seeing the reviews on their own web page, it kind of scared me.. Lots of people complaining about their Customer Service and the Warranty, well, if you can do without the saw for 6 to 8 to 10 weeks at a time and several had returns of still broken saws,, then, the warranty was Ok.. I am only saying what I saw on their website, not first hand knowledge of anything actual... but, I did send an email to their Support and didn't get a reply, although, didn't get one from Metabo either..
I can't say about the C10RJSM, other than, out of the box, everything was pretty well calibrated and it looks pretty good, but, it looks very substantial and I didn't see anything "Cheap"..
I have not made my first cut yet. Still have to get back to the final tweeks/checks and then a few initial jigs for it for some first projects. Lots of Guys that I see do contract work have the R3513 and are happy with it, so, that is good for something..

This video saved my Hitachi table saw. I bought one a few years ago then watched your video about the handle breaking. Thank you for posting it! Because of your video, I have been careful to open and close the handle lock very gently. After three years it's still in one piece. If I hadn't seen this video I'm sure my saw would have broken long before now. Thanks again!

It sucks but, I would've grabbed a quick clamp and used that as a lock in order to finish up for the day. Then, go exchange my saw or order parts. There's other ways to lock it down if necessary.
I've been considering this saw because of the features and reported accuracy. I think if I do buy it I'll simply order the replacement handle to begin with and find a way to reinforce it before its even needed. Thank you for the report on the inferior part. I won't be surprised now if this does occur and be ready.

That sucks! i've been looking into (researching) this saw for quite some time and am pretty set to buy it. For the price and how it performs and its features, I think it best fits my needs. I usually buy used tools or new Ryobi stuff from HD for the past 15-20 years, but the latest benchtop/jobsite table saws ryobi offers just seem very cheap. I'm sure for my needs they could work, and my other Ryobi products (including a miter and circular saw) have lasted a very long time, but I want something a little more solid. For that part to break on the C10RJ would drive me nuts! I especially want a solid, accurate and smooth-moving fence. I recently saw that Grizzly has a benchtop/jobsite saw, but there isn't very much information on it yet, I guess it's very recent and is a bit less thatn the C10RJ, which I haven't seen go down in price, not even around the holidays. Hopefully I'll start seeing some reviews on YT pretty soon onthe Grizzly. It's been a while since that last video. Any updates on the C10RJ? ✌

It could be a one off situation, sometimes moulded plastics are not cured properly. Unless it’s THAT much cheaper, I would say stick with DeWalt or Bosch for contractor styles. I suspect the Hitachi is made by the same people based on some similar parts and use of patents, but it’s hard to imagine DeWalt would let a customer competitor dethrone them. Down time is far worse than a few dollars saved on a machine.

Damn. I hate seeing this. I just replaced my Rigid jobsite saw with this one...Well, same model # but branded under Metabo. The Rigid was great, lasted me 10 years. I did have to replace the switch two times in it and its not even a soft start. While researching portable table saws I did see that the switches in these are an issue...but I found them on Amazon for $10, so that helped put me at ease. What made me pull the trigger on this one is that my local Lowes only had one left in stock..new in the box..and they marked it down to $300. I figured for $300 its not too much of a gamble. So far I love it, but I can't rest easy!

I know what you are talking about. It is the soft start module. It can go bad. The fence has a screw just inside that needs tightening to fix your fence issue. It is too sensitive. The Hitachi's that came out just before the name change to Metabo fixed these issues. and the Metabo version has the Dewalt fence now.

  • @pam0077

I went to my local Lowes to look at the floor sample of this C10RJ saw. The fence locking mechanism was broken on it too. 🤣
It's on sale for $400 with a free mitre saw, but after watching this and reading all the reviews saying the starter switch on their C10RJ burned out within 2 or 3 uses, I think I'll go with the Dewalt 7491RS for $500 instead.

I have taken it in to be fixed hopefully it will be under warranty. We used a clap when this originally broke which worked but as everyone knows is kind of a modification and just one extra thing to keep an eye on while a high speed sharp blade is spinning. Not ideal . Obviously a design flaw . Metabo (Hitachi) fix your tool

Of course it wasn't in stock at the same Lowes so I had to drive to a farther location where they had three (3) Dewalts but it was worth it. I just bought this saw at Lowe's for ~$260 (with sale and coupon) a few weeks ago as my first table saw. Haven't used it yet, but got it assembled. Now I'm getting worried. Lots of recent bad reviews popping up based on bad QC and durability. Visually, my stand seemed to have decent welds so I dodged that bullet. Checking how level the surface was I noticed about 1/16" dip in the back left corner, hopefully not a major issue. The insert plate also sticks up a bit in the back, hopefully it can be adjusted or bent down since it seems kind of flimsy. Haven't tried squaring up the fence/blade yet. At the price I paid I expected some issues, but as a beginner it might be a bit more fiddling than I bargained for. I'm also unable to find the dado insert plates for sale anywhere. Was hoping to use this for the WWMM course Steve Ramsey offers.

    • @82camino96
      @82camino96 6 років тому

David Thomas did you buy one yet? I bought the r4513 and while the fence is really nice, I feel that the saw is garbage. The blade chatters, lots of deflection and the bevel lock does NOT hold tight. Every rip I make moves the bevel out of square sometimes even 2 or 3 degrees and even 4 if I forget to check for a few cuts. It leaves noticeable saw marks because of the chatter and most notably it sounds VERY rough upon start up. Kinda startling in fact... just wanted to give some input on the saw... I also bought the Dewalt jobsight saw and the table was warped like a record that was left in a hot car. Put a straight edge on it and got out the feeler gage and 36 thou slipped under it without hesitation. Went right back in the box and back to the store. Said to myself “nope” not if their QC is going to allow something that defective to get to a consumer. I think I am going to try this Hitachi for portability and jobs and just put a real stationary saw in my shop to stay. Pull out all the stops. Although I’m becoming afraid to buy any more of these consumer grade mobile saws. Fail after fail for me. Good luck 👍🏽

I think I'll go yellow this thanksgiving sale of 2018. Thanks for sharing your experience. I'm a newbie and can't afford to replace tools to soon .

Check this out on youtube. Best Portable Job Site Table Saw - Head-2-Head. I've had mine for a year and I love it. Yes it has little quirks and needs adjustments but for the price you can't beat it. I wish you luck in the search for your saw.

My Hitachi table saw developed a crack and eventually made th unit unsafe and unusable. Shame. Only had mine for 6 months. +$300 dollars down the drain. Never will I buy a Hitachi again.

I'm sorry to hear that. I really wanted to like this saw. The design is great, but my experience with the quality and comments like yours left me not wanting to risk investing in hitachi tools.
I went with the Ridgid for a replacement and like it. What did you do?

James Brown my motor burned out on mine. I only paid 299 for mine new at Lowe’s and I was glad it broke. The fence was Mickey Mouse and it tended to move out of square and plumb and it held dust If you liked the hitachi you’ll love the ridgid. My broke hitachi looks brand new. My beat up ridgid out performed it. Also it isn’t fit with a dado insert which should tell you something and it doesn’t have an electric reset and he fence moves out of plumb. It might be a beast on 1 by but it was a wuss on everything else. Now I’m dragging up my jet cabinet saw to the garage and it will be my dado saw and the ridgid will be my rollout and rip it saw.

Hitachi is junk, had a tv that they wouldnt warranty so im done with them. Threw the tools in the the garbage that i had of theirs and bought new stuff. Sent the video to the customer service stiff, took a sledge to the tools beforehand.

Well the second one had a fence that would not lock tight and no way to adjust the tension. I wish! I really liked the saw and enjoyed using it, but the quality is just not there. I don’t have enough UA-cam clout for them to care. Running the RIDGID r4513 now and it is a really good saw. That’s my recommendation.

They will send you parts free of charge if you are kind to the rep. My fence lock was slipping and kept unlocking I called and they sent me a replacement. Since then i took a 1/2 box wrench and turned the screw not he fence lock and it works fine and I still have not change the part out.

Yeah the second one I got after this broke as well. I went with a Ridgid after that. Much more accurate and the fence is probably the best you'll find on a Jobsite saw. Most importantly there's not much on it to break.
