Why do you want to be a part of the Sephora Squad if you are against product overconsumption. If you were selected for Sephora squad you’d be responsible for influencing your subscribers with Sephora products and some may be self care/hygiene products. If you have a minimalist lifestyle then you probably wouldn’t be a good candidate for Sephora squad. I’m sure Sephora reviews video content and would say you aren’t aligned with their goal ambassador.
Anyone with sensitive skin, eczema, psoriasis, etc knows that overwashing and over-exfoliating is a nightmare for the quality of your skin. I shower once or twice a day, and the only fragranced products i use are maybe my bath soap and my perfume. The idea of mixing multiple scented things on my skin sounds like a great way to get a breakout.
Yes!! I have sensitive skin and eczema, so all my life I have used dove unscented soap and natural sensitive skin deodorant. Anything with scent will break me out. I sometimes use perfume and have no issue with that.
This! I have had bad eczema my whole life, I literally can’t take crazy long hot showers with millions of scented products. I would walk around prickly and itchy all day! These crazy routines at one point made me feel inferior and like I was never going to smell good again!
I'm a black woman with a cleaning business and even I can see how performative a lot of bw are when they get online about their hygiene or routine. Nobody is normal anymore. I'm not doing a 38 step routine to wash my face and I'm not about to put 18 perfumes and lotions on either. It's okay to be minimalistic and keep it simple. As long as you can keep a clean home and properly wash your behind and brush your teeth everyday, all of those extra daily routines are just unnecessary and comes off as obsessive compulsive or vain.
I don’t see how someone going overboard with cleaning is really an issue if that’s how they feel they should clean themselves then let them be, in my opinion
I hate when people feel free to smugly hygiene-shame people for not obsessing over sterilizing themselves. Especially if they don’t even take care of the *inside* of their body (clean eating, exercise, not drinking etc etc).
They're the worst and always sick!! I eat clean and haven't been sick in 10 years. My aunt who is always sick is constantly telling me I am not clean enough. Like humans were not made to be sterile!!
@@CyberMachine right? It’s so hypocritical. Oh I’ll make fun of you for not scrubbing the skin off your knees with three types of soap twice a day, but I’ll return home drunk off my ass, in a sweaty old wig, binge on fast food and go to sleep with a full face of makeup. The definition of performative, but when no one is watching they’re actually worse
It also screws boys & men's realistic expectations and knowledge of the female body which causes ALL KINDS of trouble. I had to educate my husband on so much about the natural operation of the female body and I had to trickle inform him so he wouldn't get overwhelmed 😂😂😂
@@honks9484not anatomy but things like hormone balancing, birth control effects, libido changes through the month, sleep needs, etc 😄 More the internal workings bc media only gives them random bits and pieces
Im so glad that I’ve reached the age of 35 where I’m confident with my vagina being a vagina. I also must say since I date out of my race I have never felt insecure anymore about smells. I don’t feel bad anymore if I shower ones a day or even not showering 1 full day. My diet is super clean and that also benefits my outward appearances and smells
YES! Good!! My last roommate was black and that man would shower twice a day, almost everyday, and I felt so sorry for him to have to shower so much just to feel "normal" because of all the pressure to feel perfectly clean all the time. Like, damn bro, chill! 😂 You're good! You don't gotta do all that.
It is in to response to all the comments saying bw “smell” bad just because they’re black. Bw always have to go the extra mile to prove a point to others that it isn’t true. Even when it comes to our hair , many risk heat damage to prove they have length. There is always a root to all of this
I was saying that in the car. BW go through a lot, it is sooo much mental conditioning to always feel the need to prove ourselves to people, even inside the community. I really want BW to break free, a lack of care and peace is awesome.
When did this start happening? Im a black woman, and Ive always heard we smell good as a race because of certain lotions/creams, and perfumes. Wow, that is sad. Im really curious about when this narrative switched
@@khfgt616 BM red pill content has done a lot to set us back to make it entertaining to dehumanise BW, saying BW smell, have poor hygiene etc. along with castigating all BW to one stereotype of being 'unpleasant' and 'unmarriageable'.
Another important thing that’s often left out of these conversations are how HARMFUL heavily scented products are. Fragrance is a KNOWN endocrine disrupter that can affect our hormones and lead to issues such as cancer and infertility.
I cringe every time I see people throwing multiple bath bombs in a bathtub, I feel so sorry for their lady bits because you're going to steep it in all that chemical in the name of self care
Dial bar soap or Irish spring bar, African wash sponge, out in 5 minutes. Suave deo, Lotion up or shea butter, perfume oil. Done lol. Nothing fancy, affordable & effective.
I just don’t feel like anybody has a RIGHT to tell another woman what to do with her body. I love hygiene products but it’s MY preference. Self care just keeps me relaxed. But who am I to tell a woman that prefers a minimalistic lifestyle to up her game on her hygiene?! Out of order! YOUR BODY, YOUR BUSINESS! Period!
Another issue with the performance olympics is how so few people seem aware of what they’re saying about disabled people. Literally some people don’t shower while they’re depressed. Or need assistance. Or it takes so much effort they don’t do it everyday. Some people do the minimum and that’s all they can do and that doesn’t automatically mean they’re nasty
I went through a period where I would only get out of bed to use the restroom, and I barely even ate. That went on for months. Then, I had extremely bad OCD to where I'd take showers for so long that sometimes I'd get sick and pass out. Now, I have found a healthy balance, but that took YEARS. Thank you for making this comment.
thank you for mentioning this. i’m autistic and chronically ill, and i really struggle with hygiene for a variety of reasons. i do my best, but i hate feeling so much shame because i can’t always maintain showering and taking care of my skin/hair everyday. even washing my body is overwhelming for me, let alone maintaining my greasy curly hair and skincare routine
@@morethanyourbasics thanks for mentioning this. I just had to tell someone in another thread that I shower daily just to get back into my bed, so why would I get out to shower again before I go to sleep? It’s hard enough to get that one shower. And honestly, sometimes I skip that because I’m in so much pain I can’t move. Like I literally can’t even change the channel on my tv because I can’t move my hand. So how am I supposed to shower if I can’t lift myself out of the bed? Disability comes with many nuances. And even then, I have never been told that I stink! I have times where it takes 2 people to help me get to my bathroom and it’s less than 10 feet from my bed. I have had 5 failed back surgeries which I couldn’t avoid because of infections in the discs and vertebra. I have constant pain that never less than a 5. Nerve damage and DDD, as well as scoliosis which is severe and sciatic pain in both legs. My back and legs are on fire 99% of the time. So getting up, getting in the walk in tub my mom had added to my bathroom, which she added as an en suite just to make our lives more convenient and comfortable, is STILL a huge chore! And I will NOT be seen as dirty when I barely leave my room, which is cleaned from top to bottom daily. It’s cleaner than hospital rooms. My sheets are changed daily. And if I don’t shower I still get a bed bath by my home health aide. It’s not as thorough but it’s enough. I hate that every Black woman is seen as a monolith when we’re so diverse in every aspect imaginable.
THANK YOU! It's beyond upsetting. I'll never forget the first time I had a doctor tell me to stop showering daily after being bullied by my mom for not doing it. My pediatrician explained to her that over showering was causing exfoliative dermatitis in my preteens. Fast forward 20yrs, it turns out I have aquagenic urticaria. Already have exercise intolerance so needing Benadryl to shower is exhausting.
I'm an Indian girl living in Europe and I'll have to say, I've gone from the basics to slightly performative in terms of self care. My hygiene needs have always been met but since coming to Europe, I've felt this sort of inferiority and the need to step things up, which I know is stupid but really, I think it's ingrained. I'd call it the colonial mindset of having to overperform to feel on the same level as them like some form of overcompensation but it's kind of a stretch at the same time. It's also hard to know if you're either doing too much or too little because social media shoves those 100 step self care vids down our throats lol
I just unsubscribed from a creator who put perfume on her infant right before she put her to bed. Babies don’t need perfume, it’s getting out of control. Fragrance is so bad.
I mean, if someone smells bad it’s because 1. They haven’t showered. 2. They didn’t put on deodorant/ antiperspirant. 3. They didn’t wipe well enough after #2. 4. They are indeed clean, but their perfume smells awful against the natural PH of their skin. Switch perfumes. Just avoid all these and you’ll be fine.
I'm not from the US, but Brazil has a huge hygiene shame problem too. When I say huge, I mean 2 showers a say is considered BARE minimum. People think that 4 showers a day is what should be the rule. Anything under that and people start to say you're smelly. It affects both men and women, it's very ingrained in society here. Full shower, body lotion, perfume, beard perfume for men, etc, etc. Going out without taking a shower? Disgusting. Washing your hair every other say? Absolutely disgusting. It's very uncomfortable tbh. I remember being very deep in depression and I couldn't get myself out of bed every day, let alone shower, and I felt terrible. I felt I was failing because I didn't shower that day. I know my friends who have coily hair, if they say they don't wash their hair every day because of porosity and type, people will say to their face that they're pigs. Here it's kinda hardcore about hygiene. I have to control myself to not think bad of others because of their hygiene because it's so ingrained in my mind. And it's not only about body, it goes about house too. People here deep clean their house pretty much every other day. And when I say deep clean, I mean washing the floors with water and soap, cleaning all the furniture with products, etc
That is insane. I am happy I am from Russia, it is cold for 7 months, everyone covered in layers of clothes which prevents from being obsessed with what people do with their skin
YES! I've been to Brazil several times. When I told my friends I only shower once a day in the evening they looked at me like I was covered in 💩. I'm clean 🫧🫧 I just can't handle two showers a day regularly my skin would fall off
I try to keep it simple. Body wash, body oil, and deodorant daily and exfoliating once a week. Brushing and flossing twice a day. Extras are waxing, nails, and hair. Also the less I used for skincare the better my skin got
@@KateeAngelJust because body hair is “natural” doesn’t mean you have to keep it: It’s a preference. If some women want to keep their body hair, I surely don’t think they’re “dirty” due to that. But for myself - and most women in my family and friend groups - we shave legs, underarms, and bikini area regularly (since Middle School!).
THIS! I was one of those kids that struggled with hygiene because my mom didn’t really teach me. (She was a single full time working mother. So I had to teach myself a lot of things). It’s only when I was able to buy my own things that I started to do better with it. I’m also a thiccc girly so I have to do the extras in order to not be smelly and sweaty. I understand people do the most but it’s not always performative.
I’m on my mid 40s and a ton of products I used to use are horrible for my skin now. Everything now has to be scent free/fragrance free or hypoallergenic scented. I actually found that cutting down on steps and products has been freeing.
I wasn’t taught how to properly take care of my hygiene as a child leading me to get bullied for smelling bad, now I wash up with 3 soaps do every single hack to smell good,I feel confident now but I also feel kinda weird
Also you don't need a full body deodorant/antiperspirant. Sweat has a function! If you sweat A LOT, that might actually be a medical condition that freakin' goddamned Lume cannot cure. Kay? Sorry I'm just so mad about Lume and their ads telling us we're all nasty smelly animals. And that semen ad from her was sooooo fucked up. *Edit* Excessive body odor can ALSO be a medical condition so if that is something you struggle with and have the ability, contact your doctor.
i don't like their advertisements but full body deo is mostly for people who want to use it on their feet/boobs/buttcrack/between rolls in addition to their armpits. the original formula doesn't have an antiperspirant.
@@NarkAttack I still don't like it because the introduction of chemicals/fragrances to those areas can cause skin irritations/infections. Or coverup serious fungal infections in those areas.
dude i literally only use dove body soap, Nair to shave, Vaseline, and a nice perfume and I got tons of people telling me I smell nice….i don’t know why this is such a big deal with buying an obnoxious amount of products to prove to strangers online that you’re clean. maybe this is why I don’t have TikTok idk
I love the body care, skin care, nails, perfume and fashion. I enjoy taking time to meticulously care for my body. It’s exciting and fun to me. I feel like it’s part of the joy of being a woman. Is it necessary? No, but will I keep doing it? Absolutely! I don’t use scented products in or around my vagina. Just white unscented soap on the outside and water on the inside.
I do think it’s important to shower everyday, just not more than once , showering too frequently is in fact not good for your skin , shower everyday , do deep exfoliation once a week , that’s enough ….
It is fine to not shower every day, if it is cold and you almost don't sweat, or if you stay home all day etc. In the winter I shower once in 2-4 days and feel cleaner than in the summer when I shower every day, because in the summer if it is hot I sweat all the time.
The last part of the video reminds me a lot of the shaving your legs or not discussion, where women are supposedly unhygienic when they don't shave (even though it causes micro tears and ingrown hair, which raise the chances of infections), just because it's vaguely associated with hygiene (but obviously men don't have to because [insert totally valid reason]).
Well I am an old head who stumbled upon your channel. I have been floored at these hygiene girlies and the lengths they go through to be "clean". My skin would be screaming from all the soaps and scrubs and what not. I appreciated that one TikTok where the young lady delved into the black history roots of how these cleanliness standards were pushed on black people. Thanks for the info, great job. ❤
I got into perfume this year and I’m careful to not go down the rabbit hole because it’s like a gateway into the hygiene Olympics. You need this lotion, for this fragrance, but only if you use this body wash before this oil. Don’t forget to layer I try to have fun and the most important part is what you said at the end. One issue or body part less clean doesn’t make a whole statement about you or black people. You have to get off the stage at some point - performative hygiene is a never ending downward spiral left unchecked
I fell down that rabbit whole of mixing and matching cream, shower gels, perfumes and I became way too obsessed and eventually annoyed with myself. I’m sticking to varied perfume oil and perfumes and sticking to one shower gel and lotion.
@@nataliesasha8216 I think that’s what’s important. It’s human to get sucked in but you stopped yourself. I’m in the dabbling. So not to the 9s but not basic either. I’m not on twitter so I’m not team underconsumption core. I’m team do you! I’m glad you have a routine that works for you 🙏🏾
Same !!! . I use to have a huge Victoria secret / bath and body works collection years ago , now I’m over it . I just use dial soap Nivea lotion any perfume I have it still works fine

I don't understand what is wrong with wanting you skin to glow from Body butters? They are moisturising for most an help with eczema and psoriasis. I agree with the excessive hygine part but I feel like people dont want black women to have a little bit of pride in their hygiene.
Pride in hygiene does not have to include 10+ products in a shower routine. Pride in hygiene is simply being clean and not offending people with your smell. This is consumerism.
I have personal experience of being expected to prove how clean you are because you're a dark skinned girl, because believe it or not, although it's the 21st century, a lot of black communities still consider dark skin as dirty. I am so happy and feel blessed that I never bought into that lie, and also that I don't see myself spending all that money to buy all those products just so I can be considered "clean". My personal routine is 2 showers a day and an exfoliation day on Sunday, I can't stand too much fragrance so I only have 1 perfume at a time, and guess what, that's completely FINE!
I am a minimalist, so I use the most basic products lol …..but i just don’t want the girls to go broke, trying to buy some many products….if you can afford to have this many products, go for it ….dont break the bank trying to keep up with all of these products and routines…..if you can afford to use numerous products and it makes you happy, do you babe!
I do a regular ole dove soap, Venus razor, eos shaving cream, jergens lotion and a body oil (sometimes) (I rarely use my treehut scrub). My skin routine is cerave face wash, witch hazel and cerave moisturizing cream (panoxyl if I need to exfoliate) I’ve been fine with this
@@HerbeyStudies exactly and tbh it’s actually not good to use sooo many different products at once and especially with skincare, some things cant be used together. I learned the hard way.
If you need 5 different products just to keep your funk away, you need to see a doctor. Tea tree oil diluted in water is all I use on my private areas. And, for the rest of my body I use a simple natural cocoa butter soap bar.
Same! I can’t leave my house without being clean for the day. I don’t do anything physical and barely sweat, so it’s not like I’m extremely dirty. I’m disabled so I’m not really doing much anyway so it’s cool to shower in the morning, WHEN I HAVE THE ENERGY, and be done with it!
Honestly same. I prefer to shower in the morning, but with commuting to work in a major city it makes sense to get into the bed clean than leaving the house clean. It sucks because we are still showering daily
6:01 that might be the case but language has meaning and a purpose. We literally study this in high school. How to analyze text. And this goes with spoken language as well. And a lot of these hygiene channels word their content in a judgemental way and as if, if you're not doing the most, you're gross. And a lot of those content creators truly believe that. Hence why they choose that language.
@@keepingitkianatural Omg, I absolutely hate that phrase 😂😂. Guaranteed swipe for me. It just lets me know that whatever follows is likely intolerant, narrow minded and probably badly researched.
Those of us with teenage girls are STRUGGLING to keep them from participating in the hygiene Olympics! My 14 year old swears she needs 7 products in the shower and another 5 products for her face routine, and I know for a fact this is coming from TikTok. It’s a constant conversation with her to make sure she’s not thinking she smells if she doesn’t shower 3 times a day.

My stylist opens her skull to tell people not to wash their braids because then, their real hair will beco.e frizzy through the braids. So people are supposed to just walk around with dirty scalps and braids? What is a protective style protecting you from if you're not maintaining a clean head? Whenever I get braids, it's still once a week washing with me just as when my hair is loose and free. I exercise, have a physical job, and life be lifing in general for me to not spend a little extra time to wash and dry my braids.
@@Spokentruths725 wigs & braids are 2 different things. You can take off your wig nightly. Unless you sweat profusely you can go 2 weeks without washing your hear.
@@TheLoveweaver i know but that wasnt the point i was making. Some women go even longer or wash their hair with the wig on top thinking its still properly cleaning their hair. Im not talking about those who take it off and wash properly. They do the same with box braids.
Yes thank you! BW shaming ppl doing the thing where we don't soap & scrub arms and legs more than 2x/week is really mean & unfortunate. I am pasty with thin, sensitive skin. When I got allergy skin prick tests, I reacted to the ones that were just salt water. If I scrubbed like these women want me to, I would be one giant raw eczema patch year round. I soap, as George Carlin said, "hands feet face pits & bits" daily, but suffering to scrub to every-inch-every-day standards is not going to happen.
It is bad and other groups of women are listening and still misinformed. I was speaking with a coworker and she shared how no one uses toilet seat covers or washes their hands. I shared with her how disappointed I was when I caught the C years after the pandemic and she confessed she had it multiple times. It didn’t sound right to me because she also shared how she didn’t have kids. So I looked at her nails; dirty, her teeth; unbrushed but her hair looked clean. The focus isn’t where it should be especially if germs and disease are still being spread.
@@KateeAngelExactly! Something so simple to prevent diseases and few people care about washing, cleaning, or sanitizing their hands. Some people think it's being OCD or unnecessary to do those things and it isn't.
This is my opinion about “health” nuts as well. If they really cared about being healthy then they would be advocating for public health, clean air etc etc. People only care about the performance of it all

People will sweat and the scent will fade and that's fine, you're not gross for not spelling like a Bath and Body works 24/7.
A lot of the routines I see are realistic and match my routine personally. It’s like therapy for me and I love doing my routine to wind down after a long day... but of course there are a few ridiculous ones.

How do people who didn’t wash their body correct wash their dishes, do they just use water on their pots, pans, glasses or dishes? Do they use dishwashing liquid or dishwasher liquid, do they use detergent to wash their clothes? How do they wash the outside of their cars, just water or do they apply car washing liquid? How do they clean their tub, shower, toilet and sink?I have so many questions. We don’t even have time for washing their food at this point.
Omg someone finally made a video about this! Thank youuu I noticed most if not all the YT videos related to personal hygiene were made by black girls and I felt like it stemmed from this perception that black people are dirty and this is a joke/insult that has lasted for years. A way to make black people feel less than others and it's not just in America! It's worldwide. So by making these videos, I think that's like a way of debunking this stereotype and proving that we are indeed clean people. Also, specifically for black women, I know for years they would make jokes about our private parts smelling, and this would even come from black men. So a lot of the videos titled "How to stay fresh down there all day" or "Make your 😺 taste good" would be made by black women. This is a result of years and years and years of people denigrating black people, particularly black women. (P.S. I'm writing this comment before watching the video, so she probably touched all the points I just mentioned 😅)
From what I understand, there is nothing inherently wrong with Summer's Eve, other than their use of fragrance. Summer's Eve is just body wash. I notice some snobbery (not from this creator) around regular accessible soaps and hygiene products. Another layer to the performative consumption.
the problem is that people think it's okay to use internally and it's not. you should be putting anything but water INSIDE of your vagina. simpler the better down there, all of my obgyns have said this.
fragrance free dove bar soap is best for feminine hygiene. it won’t disrupt your pH or cause issues, plus it’s super affordable! summers eve and similar products often cause pH imbalances and infections unfortunately. however, soap should only be used on the exterior parts, never inside
This was such a great video! I love how you broke this down and appreciate you speaking on something that I think many of us Black girls have been navigating in silence.
Im obsessed with hygiene but not to prove myself to other people, but bc it makes me feel better, also for religious reasons. When I shower I use 3 rags (1 african net sponge for my body, 1 japanese exfoliating sponge for my face & 1 exfoliating glove for private parts) then I wash them in the washing machine at least once a week. Then I use natural cocoa butter to mosturize my private parts, and dove cream on my body and deadorant. I Dont use too much perfume very often bc of religious reasons. In my religion hygiene is very important. For example we wash our private parts every time after using the toilet. (When Im in public rest rooms were I dont have access to water I use wet wipes) I also wear abaya (long dresses) so during summer time I dont wear underwear outside or in my house (unless im working out then I need to wear leggings). In winter time I dont wear underwear at inside my house.
views, getting into a content niche, product promotion, affiliate marketing, trend, aesthetic..are the main motive for those videos...people are focused on the wrong things in life for the term "hygiene olympics" to even exist
I really don’t think that this is a race thing. This is more of a overconsumption ,lack of community, the need to fit in and you see it over a broad-spectrum Stanley cups ,over cleaning trends mixing chemicals that can make you pass out, perfume tok, cleaning tok. It’s who has the most ,who can start cult like trends? Etc
Ill tell you for a fact that it is a race thing. Here in Africa ,the caucasians here are generally not as clean as the black people here .And I am not talking about poor people . Caucasian people will foaunt how they dont wash their kids frequently, black kids shower often . There is a dangerous overconsumption and excessive hygiene products and steps .But most people dont do the bare minimum of showering everyday
As someone who enjoys eating cat, i actually really like the natural smell it has. And if it doesn’t smell like that I’m gonna be hella confused and lowkey disappointed cause I know the taste will be atypical as well.
I was with you up until the dirty hair part. I think we as a people need to differentiate “dirty” & “low product use”. Yes, dirty hair is not a good environment to grow hair. But low product use over a period of time can help some people grow their hair. For me, I usually have a “hair wash day” once every 2 to 3 months. And this has been going on since I was a child & my mom was doing my hair. So I was blessed in that area to grow & learn about natural hair coming up in the 80’s. And what I learned was, on the day that you wash your hair & do all the things to it, always use a good hair grease or product you love (like now I make & use my own hair butter) & do not apply anything to it as the days go by. This heavily avoids product buildup. I know a lot of people can’t do this, but I always look at it like this, folks with all different types of dreads are not spritzing, oiling, moisturizing or whatever to their hair every morning. Some do but most don’t. When people see me & my youngest son, they swear we are gatekeeping some hidden secret about our hair. Mines is usually in about 15-25 two-strand twists that are now right at the bum-crack lol & his is mid back length free form dreads. And to tie into the main convo, we both have been told by “Others” that we smell good because our hair gave them the perception of something else…basically the same perception others had when Zendeyah, wore her hair in either twists/locks on the red carpet years ago…
Washing your hair only every 2-3 months is gross even if you’re not constantly reapplying product in between. Your scalp produces oil, your hair picks up environmental debris, it’s extremely unhygienic to go that long without washing your hair. Stop kidding yourself that you’re not dirty with your routine.
I've always wondered why 1 person needs 2-3 body washes in ONE SHOWER. like I get double cleansing, especially if you've been sweating all day and need to bust a funk, but 3 body washes?...in ONE shower?..idk bout yall, but our apartment don't have that much hot water and frankly, I have a toddler. I don't have the time to have 2,000 steps to my routine. I also simply can't afford to keep up with this trend; I gotta child to feed
It’s not just about taking care of the outside of your body. People should be focused on the inside as well. I eat mainly plant based but don’t eat meat at all (I’m not saying people have to stop eating meat, it was my choice) and I don’t deal with body odor. I use fragrance free soap and shower once a day
I don’t usually participate in the hygiene convos, but they’re exhausting. I have a family to take care of and not a ton of energy (I also have a skin condition) - I’m not following any kind of hygiene routine that involves 50-11 steps lol. I do what I feel like in the moment. When I take a shower I’m more than likely just scrubbing myself down and enjoying some music. If I decide I have the energy and time, I might use a body scrub, shave, etc. My bare minimum in the morning is brushing my teeth and washing my face…I have several products, but I just can’t get myself into a regular multi-step skincare routine either. Thankfully two of my kids are older so I don’t have to bathe them anymore, but I have two you her ones that still need me. The bigger one needs to bathe mostly everyday because she plays outside in the dirt, running around, sweating and will come back inside smelling like shes been rolling in the ground lol. I like to get the toddler in the tub at least every other day, but more if necessary. It’s tiring having to wrestle him every time. There have been times I’ve showered multiple times a day depending on weather or what’s going on, but there are also times I feel so tired that I’ll just end up passing out before I even get a chance to shower. I hate how in some circles that would get me a ton of judgement, but unless someone is going to come take some of this work off my plate, they can keep it. And I just remembered how one time I saw a Black woman (of Caribbean descent) basically implying she was cleaner than other women because she wouldn’t dare throw her panties in the washing machine - she hand washes every single one when she takes them off. Good for you ma’am, but I don’t have the time or desire lmao.
I remember a girl posted on twitter about how she hates when thr shower liner touches her. Then everyone jumped in to say that it it was dirty. Like how did you make that jump??
26:27 I use a new wash washcloth everyday, yes. I do that because I use it to wash my face first, then the rest of my body. It doesn’t make sense to me to use the same washcloth again on my face. I have a stack of them, but it’s more about logic to me though.
They would have hated me when I lost my mom, I didnt wash my hair for almost 6 months 😵💫 and felt like that part of my sadness needed to stay hidden purely based on how I would be judged (My own aunt called the city on me because i hadn't cut the grass rather than help me, no way I could tell them about anything else actually going on with me) I also feel like this is why so many black women have endocrine issues all those scents and additives...
Anyone mad at you for that is soulless and lacks empathy .These conversations, Olympics, overconsumption exclude people who are grieving or going through mental health,d issuesand disabled people for the right reasons
Ppl have a problem whenever you do extra 😂 ppl just enjoy complaining and hating. Im extra, love cleaning myself and freshening myself up. I’ve never had a man complain about doing anything sexual, dating back to my 20s. That’s a good idea to order yoni baths and sprays. I going to check Queen Afua products 💫
Regardless of race I think another aspect of the convo which you touched on a little bit is keeping up with celebs/very wealthy people. I say this bc it almost seems like you do need a bunch of products to keep up with those standards bc the products are 1) cheaper and 2) often those individuals are getting more elaborate services, surgery, or procedures to have longer lasting “more flawless” results. I.e. smooth hairless areas if you do not have money for laser hair removal and/or hair that would even be able to be removed with that process then it almost is necessary to constantly replace razors, exfoliate to keep away razor bumps aka exfoliate products/clothes, lotion to maintain moisturized skin, etc. Another example of skin care someone who has money may be able to get facials or more effective skin care items from a dermatologist compared to someone who may not be able to that has to use drugstore products which can be effective maybe not as great or may take longer to see effects bc they aren’t the most amazing quality. I think another aspect of the convo is affordable food and health care bc i guarantee that everyone would have to use less products if products like our food items were as processed or tampered with. A lot of the self care that people do for not just physical health but also mental health is to combat what we are lacking and/or overly consuming in nutrients from our food. Even when it comes to “smelling good” ppl can use a ton of products but if they aren’t drinking water or depending on what they eat their scent can change. Like personally Ik I can use all the acne products in the world but if I continue drinking pop my face will break out. It’s all about knowing one’s self, figuring out what’s good for your body/lifestyle, and weeding out products that might just be part of an over consumption plan.
I think lately people conflate whit your body smelling like anything to your body smelling "bad". Forever masking your own body scent in artificial flavored perfumes and body washes does not cue you in on how a healthy body should smell. I have a neighbor who every time they walk in the hall, their "perfume" of some overly offensive floral body spray/wash/etch takes over the hall for a good five minutes. Its gross. I also don't understand heavily scented body washes. If it's washing your skin, you want it off your skin. To then layer it with powders, lotions, hair products (which STINK now a days, IMO) and then perfume, not to mention the scents from washing your clothes. It's all tooooo much. My routine is simple. I shower every other day IF Im staying in the house (I work from home). I bathe if I go out, and after I work out. That equals out to 5-6 showers a week. That's enough. I can only imagine these women's water bills.
Falling victim to over consumption of products is ridiculous and I almost got caught up. Even with the facial cleaning warriors on social media, they put 100 different face products on their face and some point I feel like something is canceling out each other. I have one face wash and one moisturizer as I have sensitive skin. I don't believe our bodies were meant to consume all of these products and even chemicals. I'm slowly transitioning into being minimalistic with a lot of things, especially beauty products. To each their own though, I just found over buying a lot of the products are a waste of money and a ploy to make us feel like we have to over consume and spend money on unnecessary things
THIS! so true…Loll I like hygiene products…. They are fun. The best thing I ever stared taking is chlorophyll. I have so much less anxiety about smelling bad. Loll I use perfumes/scents to relax ME. I roll my eyes everytime someone is like...Compliments, My man is going to (insert vulgerarity), and chasing me down…. 😤
I didnt know any of this is going on however I know why. It's all of the people on the internet claiming black women stink and have bad hygiene. I keep seeing people make this claim and I'm confused. Hygiene is beat into black women because of how much people already look at us crazy so I was confused about all of these claims.
2:19 Does she realize that Dr. Bronner's comes in other scents besides peppermint? It also comes unscented. I know it's trivial but it bothered me for some reason. Maybe because she's coming off condescending but doesn't even know something that basic...
Dr Bronner’s is also potent enough to be used as a household cleaner, which means you definitely shouldn’t use it on your most sensitive parts. I don’t think the scent undermines her point.
I was with her until she started talking crazy about dr.bronners all natural soap. Now, i know she is dirty. If you feel like your butt just chewed gum after using it you are not clean especially since there are different kinds. Idk about the hygiene olympics but I tend to ignore people trying to tell me what soap i need to use. Im grown. I don't need assistance. This is actually the first video I am seeing about this.
If you ask me, we aren't doing enough hygiene practices. This world is EXTREMELY nasty which is why Covid-19 appeared. I look up to the hygiene fanatics and I aspire to be like them or better in that area. This is just my personal opinion, though💜
Covid and most illnesses have to do with a lot of people not caring about washing/cleaning/sanitizing their hands, not cleaning or sanitizing things, and people coughing, blowing their nose, or sneezing on things and then a bunch of other people touching the contaminated item(s). And yes, i am a frequent hand washer/sanitizer, i shower 1-2 times a day, wipe down things frequently, and use Lysol or other disenfectants on a regular basis.
Everyone's different. For some people hair gets dirty faster than skin, for some it is the opposite. I can say for me my hair also accumulates dirt much faster than my skin, I spend 10 minutes in shower cleaning my body and 20 minutes on my hair

The way these people posture for the interwebs is outright crazy!
I've dry sensitive acne prone skin. Goodness I'm so picky with what I use with hygiene .
This! I have had bad eczema my whole life, I literally can’t take crazy long hot showers with millions of scented products. I would walk around prickly and itchy all day! These crazy routines at one point made me feel inferior and like I was never going to smell good again!
‼️‼️‼️‼️
I'm a black woman with a cleaning business and even I can see how performative a lot of bw are when they get online about their hygiene or routine. Nobody is normal anymore. I'm not doing a 38 step routine to wash my face and I'm not about to put 18 perfumes and lotions on either. It's okay to be minimalistic and keep it simple. As long as you can keep a clean home and properly wash your behind and brush your teeth everyday, all of those extra daily routines are just unnecessary and comes off as obsessive compulsive or vain.
That part! ❤🙌🏾
👏👏👏
Love this comment. Yes, I don’t have nor don’t need all that to be clean. No shade to those that do and are actually living that but not me.
Thank you. No one is talking about the vanity of it all and the pride and elitism that ensues.
You're right. Some women have a body odor due to what's going on INSIDE their bodies! Such as uncontrolled diabetes, STI, etc.

It also screws boys & men's realistic expectations and knowledge of the female body which causes ALL KINDS of trouble. I had to educate my husband on so much about the natural operation of the female body and I had to trickle inform him so he wouldn't get overwhelmed 😂😂😂
Not trickle the information 🤭. Because we know their heads would explode 🤯

@sparkymularkey6970 its preference for some, but in college the performative cleanliness is real. Especially in dorms.
@@sparkymularkey6970I shower twice a day , in morning and night , didn’t know that was too much . I can see three or four times a day but

@sparkymularkey6970 are u based in Texas or Florida? If so, a daily shower might be necessary. Humidity is real down here 💀
It is in to response to all the comments saying bw “smell” bad just because they’re black.
I was thinking this as well
When did this start happening? Im a black woman, and Ive always heard we smell good as a race because of certain lotions/creams, and perfumes. Wow, that is sad. Im really curious about when this narrative switched
Huh? I’ve never heard this. If anything it’s white people that are accused of smelling.
I love Dial bar soap especially the gold one and I used Irish Spring for 10 years.
One thing though is Europeans need to start using deodorant.
Europe stinks
@@PrincessYonna1 I was about to say the rest of the continent needs to step it up 😂

I just unsubscribed from a creator who put perfume on her infant right before she put her to bed. Babies don’t need perfume, it’s getting out of control. Fragrance is so bad.
who puts all them chemicals on they baby girl? lord have mercy
That’s insane (and irresponsible).
I’m sorry but you have to expose them that’s ridiculous who does that? What’s a Weirdo.
There are several companies that sell perfume specifically for babies, including Bulgari.
I mean, if someone smells bad it’s because
Or they have pcos where they will stink because of there condition I ah w taht so I understand
I'm clean 🫧🫧 I just can't handle two showers a day regularly my skin would fall off
omg brazilians would hate me 😭
what i love about BR, so clean
perfectionism comes from anxiety and feelings of inadequacy
I try to keep it simple. Body wash, body oil, and deodorant daily and exfoliating once a week. Brushing and flossing twice a day. Extras are waxing, nails, and hair. Also the less I used for skincare the better my skin got
Waxing? Removing hair? Female body hair is natural
@@KateeAngelJust because body hair is “natural” doesn’t mean you have to keep it: It’s a preference. If some women want to keep their body hair, I surely don’t think they’re “dirty” due to that. Some parents don't teach their daughters and sons to take care of their hygiene properly.
Same. Fragrance free, aloe, or oatmeal and honey are the only things i use.
I wasn’t taught how to properly take care of my hygiene as a child leading me to get bullied for smelling bad, now I wash up with 3 soaps do every single hack to smell good,I feel confident now but I also feel kinda weird
I'm concerned to see girls and women using a ton of sented products because at this point is known that fragrance is messing with hormones
I absolutely hate that everything has to have a scent or fragrance. What are they trying to mask with the obnoxious smells.
*Edit*
Excessive body odor can ALSO be a medical condition so if that is something you struggle with and have the ability, contact your doctor.

I do think it’s important to shower everyday, just not more than once , showering too frequently is in fact not good for your skin , shower everyday , do deep exfoliation once a week , that’s enough ….
YES PEOPLE SHOULD SHOWER EVERY SINGLE DAY
For some people, showering every single day is terrible for their skin and hair.
It is fine to not shower every day, if it is cold and you almost don't sweat, or if you stay home all day etc. In the winter I shower once in 2-4 days and feel cleaner than in the summer when I shower every day, because in the summer if it is hot I sweat all the time.
@@MsAngelique yeah I know , specially those with eczema
@@KateeAngel yes I agree , it really depends on the season and the person themselves.
I got into perfume this year and I’m careful to not go down the rabbit hole because it’s like a gateway into the hygiene Olympics.
You need this lotion, for this fragrance, but only if you use this body wash before this oil. Don’t forget to layer
I try to have fun and the most important part is what you said at the end. One issue or body part less clean doesn’t make a whole statement about you or black people. You have to get off the stage at some point - performative hygiene is a never ending downward spiral left unchecked

Honestly same. I prefer to shower in the morning, but with commuting to work in a major city it makes sense to get into the bed clean than leaving the house clean. It sucks because we are still showering daily
These hygiene officers need to give it a rest! Honestly. Apparently if you dont shower 2x everyday you’re also dirty 😅 ridiculous
Same! “Uuuhhh you go to bed dirtyyy!” * every black person I’ve ever mentioned that in front of *🙄
@@Veryvery987 and I always reply, “So you’re leaving the house dirty every time you walk out?”
I'm honored to hear my music in your video!

This sounds exhausting. I’ve never heard such a thing.
I thought it was me lol but I feel the same way. I don't understand. Actually my head hurts after this video. JUST BATHE GEEZ . It's not that serious.
Oof I remember when I was starting puberty the most they taught you needed was a deodorant a clean soap and washing properly and changing adequately
2:30 😂 I agree with her though. For someone who doesn't have bad body odor, and their PH balance isn't off, they definitely don't need all that.
I’m guilty of buying every scent of Dove. I just hate when they discontinue my fav scent
Did that woman say anti- bacterial soap!!?!?! Don’t do that. Anti-bacterial soap is for the hands only.
There actually is anti-bacterial soap designed for human bodies, in case you didn't know :)
@@nagisa9147They are not good to use. They are too harsh on the skin, strip the first layer of moisture & take away your normal flora making place for nastier bacteria & fungi! Normal soap is fine.

@@HerbeyStudies I know that. It takes me a while to fully dry mine, but I don't mind at all. Just a part of my self care routine
They do the same in wigs and no your hair cannot be properly washed through a wig smh
Washing hands is 100 times more important than anything else, because that is what we prepare and eat our food with.
@@KateeAngelExactly! Something so simple to prevent diseases and few people care about washing, cleaning, or sanitizing their hands. Some people think it's being OCD or unnecessary to do those things and it isn't.

A lot of the routines I see are realistic and match my routine personally. It’s like therapy for me and I love doing my routine to wind down after a long day... but of course there are a few ridiculous ones.
I was talking to my friend about how I have to clean my house everyday because my family always leaves a mess and this grown grown lady comes up to us, being nosy, saying something like, "I don’t even have to clean my house because I don’t make a mess 😏". When I tell you, my intrusive thoughts told me to rip this woman in half by the ears. Close your ears honey, leave this conversation
Im someone who recently got back her childhood love of taking a baths and just relaxing I like the bath tub relaxing routine and everything shower routine but im not gonna do a 40 step backflip routine to get clean
This was a great video! There's so much hygiene shaming on tiktok lately it's nuts and tbh it's just dividing women more and we need to cut it out.
Why does it matter? Dirty folks are gonna be dirty. Why worry about it?
Omg someone finally made a video about this! Thank youuu
I noticed most if not all the YT videos related to personal hygiene were made by black girls and I felt like it stemmed from this perception that black people are dirty and this is a joke/insult that has lasted for years.
Serious question, why are you commenting before watching the video? Like how does this make sense?
The rubbish we black women have been fed is absolutely ASTOUNDING
Please don’t use dove on your puss , honeypot works wonders
Tell as old as time. Make you feel unclean and bad about a thing so they can sell you something.
This was such a great video! I love how you broke this down and appreciate you speaking on something that I think many of us Black girls have been navigating in silence.
I thought everyone bathe every day but social media creeps me out on this. Just feels good to do these routines.
(When Im in public rest rooms were I dont have access to water I use wet wipes)
I also wear abaya (long dresses) so during summer time I dont wear underwear outside or in my house (unless im working out then I need to wear leggings). In winter time I dont wear underwear at inside my house.
I used to do all that extra stuff and I was still musty. 😅 I started using only Castile soap and I smell amazing.
I totally missed this movement! Wow just wow!
views, getting into a content niche, product promotion, affiliate marketing, trend, aesthetic..are the main motive for those videos...people are focused on the wrong things in life for the term "hygiene olympics" to even exist
Dirty Hair 🚫 Growth. Low Manipulation 🟰 Growth! Correlation does Not equal Causation my beautiful ladies ❤
I need a lot of products throughout the day to stay fresh
Caucasian people can be dirty at times .Its true . Especially those who dont bathe their kids often .
Two things can be true at the same time
Well .......😂
I worked in Healthcare and I assure you all races of people can be dirty
I use fragrance free soap and shower once a day
20:54 is a WHOLE conversation that people are not ready to have
I don’t usually participate in the hygiene convos, but they’re exhausting.
Same. I Buy White Only To Use For My Face & Colored Clothes For My Entire Body…They Hold To Much Bacteria Not To Change Everyday.
25:43 Yes. I just do laundry multiple times a week. 🤷♀️
When i saw my girl cam on my youtube home screen you know I had to watch ittt!!! But I loved this videoooo!!!
I was done when they started saying that Dove isn’t soap and shouldn’t be used by itself.
I didnt know any of this is going on however I know why. It's all of the people on the internet claiming black women stink and have bad hygiene. I keep seeing people make this claim and I'm confused. Hygiene is beat into black women because of how much people already look at us crazy so I was confused about all of these claims.
A fantastic breakdown of this topic 👏🏽
2:19 Does she realize that Dr. Bronner's comes in other scents besides peppermint? It also comes unscented. I know it's trivial but it bothered me for some reason. Maybe because she's coming off condescending but doesn't even know something that basic...
Dr Bronner’s is also potent enough to be used as a household cleaner, which means you definitely shouldn’t use it on your most sensitive parts. I don’t think the scent undermines her point.

But then they wear hairstyles for months on end and you can see the dandruff from miles away
You can't reuse your wash rag but you can reuse your dish sponge. Does that mean your dishes aren't clean?? See how stupid this shit sounds? 😂😂😂
