@@nyxthedragon7534 he called the formic acid the ants produce “pop rocks”. only queen ants produce eggs, so there wouldn’t be eggs in the ants he ate. also they’re so small anyway i don’t think you’d notice eggs inside them anyway
In Brazil we do have some insects in our culinary, mainly the queen ant "tanajura" abdomen fried in a farofa. Actually, I tried crickets once on a research, where they were repeating the testings (us trying crickets) on different places around the world to see the acceptance of people around consuming insects. The crickets would be better with seasoning, cause without them they taste like dog food.
Crickets are actually quite good imo, in Southern and (some parts of) Central Mexico you can sometimes even find street vendors selling ready-to-eat crickets 😵💫
You say that, but I promise you've eaten something with a similar flavor profile and weren't bothered, so if you got over the mental block, you'd be fine. I felt the same way, but at this point, I've eaten snails and crickets myself. Crickets, when fried and flavored with things like 'salt and vinegar' or 'cheese powder' honestly just taste like tiny potato chips. Same crunch, no lie. As for snails, I swear to you, they taste SO MUCH like clams. If you like clam chowder at all, and if someone made it with snails without telling you, you wouldn't think anything of it.
For everybody commenting about how they don’t dislike the idea, and the benefits make eating insects worth it, but being scared of bugs, it is worth noting that what he did with crickets already has another use. Grinding crickets up into a powder allows them to be used as flour, and then baked into a protein-rich bread. It’s a great way to consume insects without knowing it’s insects!
Just one note: when Chef Yoon says that scorpions are not insects, but arthropods, like shrimps, I would like to say that both insects and crustaceans are arthropods, and scorpions are, in fact, arachnids, and belong to the phylum arthropods as well.
3:20 fun fact Insects, scorpions, spiders, crabs are all arthropods but belong to different classes. Insects - insecta Spiders and scorpions - arachnida Crabs and shrimps - crustacea.
@@anthraxmacabre5200 eh, not really. simple way to tell is that spiders and scorpions have 4 pair of legs, where adult insects only have 3 pairs, hence the group name "Hexapods" Arthropods have mainly 4 groups Insects (Hexapods); Myriapods (including centipedes and millipedes); Arachnids (including spiders, mites and scorpions); Crustaceans (including slaters, prawn and crabs). Spiders are not related to crabs nor other insects, if it relates to anything it relates to scorpions.
You should do a method mastery named 'How to grind every herb and spice'. It would showcase the way to grind, grate or powder the spice or herb. The tools used could include a grater, grinder, microplane and others. Then what you would use that spice for.
This would also include what does most of the good for and how to use them. I want to add more spices and more variety in my cooking but I literally have no idea where to start and what to do with them. And I don’t wanna start throwing in random spaces and ruining food. But I also can’t seem to find any like, usable pieces of information that help me understand what kind of spices go and what kind of foods or flavors
Usually when someone says bugs are the protein of the future they say it in a very cynical and unhanded way. You're the first person I've seen who has actually made bugs look appetizing
There use to be a street food stand in London (candem town) that sell all sort of food with insects ... dude the roasted insects themselves had such a nice yummy smell, like you'd never expected it. Hope they are still there.
I think hes just doing that because its a "food/cooking" channel. I think when we do get to the point where we have to be eating bugs it probably wont be for taste it will be for necessity. However crickets with flavor powder on them arent the worst thing once you get over the legs in your teeth.
@@ngonzales3781 I actually got to try some of the treats he made. The one I tried was an ant chocolate and it was very good but the texture of the ant inside was bit weird. I wish I could try some of the savory stuff by him

I love his passion in all of this, I especially loved how he took the only two bugs I’ve eaten (crickets and black ants) and elevated them because that seems wayyyy more appealing than those novelty dried ones with chip seasonings that just taste like dirt. Would be very willing to try some of these dishes if offered because he elevates all the surrounding components and incorporated so many of them into so many of my favorite foods!
I mean, I'd be willing to try if it wasn't in a bug-like form. The macaroni staff he had for the crickets looked alright (before he added the whole crickets). Baby steps, I suppose. It would take a while to get anyone to eat a whole tarantula
The phrase "his truth" and/or "my truth" clearly tell me that it's not actually true So people talk about how bugs have an amazing amount of protein compared to meat or other foods, the way we ESTIMATE protein in food is by nitrogen content. Bugs, by mass, contain a huge amount of chitin, the exoskeletons of crickets and the skin of worms and stuff, and chitin is a polysaccharide with amine groups attached, so it's got a pile of nitrogen in it. It is completely indigestible and it's NOT protein. Some may say the people measuring protein content wouldn't make that mistake, but obviously we can't trust them to accurately represent their findings, they're the people telling you to eat boogs after all. Incidentally, chitin is an antigen in humans, it causes an immune reaction because the body uses its presence to infer a parasite or a yeast infection, so whilst it won't inherently "give you" cancer or any other disease, eating lots of chitin would very likely reduce your immune response to other illnesses.
Birds also will hold live ants in their beak and let the ants spray formic acid on different parts of their body. I think its either to deal with parasites or to soothe the skin during molting.
@Sonia Escalada debatable, alot of people wouldn't have any issue with it minus the stigma of gross bugs, it doesn't need to replace other meat completely either. Also invertebrates that are hairy can easily be de-hairyfied.
@Sonia Escalada people don’t really seem to have a problem consuming shrimp, oyster, clam, or other small seafood crap though. The only people that *do* complain about the poop are the people who refuse to eat it and use the poop as an excuse
Haha, I know it's strange...we do that with a lot of languages when we translate them, but this is the common way to say it in the US. I also call them chiniquiles or maguey worms depending on who I am speaking with.
I wonder if any of the people who are so vehemently against bugs eat shrimp, lobster, clams, and various other arthropods the only difference being they're aquatic.
I’ve had this guy’s cooking when he did a presentation at my school. It’s absolutely just another type of protein once you get past the whole “ew bugs” thing.
@@Reeseybooq it's not as awful as one might think. Silkworms for example taste bland when simply fried. Most bugs don't taste like anything actually, they are just salty and a lot of umami.

I haven't tried everything on the list, but I have had some dishes with crickets and cicadas. I was actually blown away how good they were. A lot of food depends on how you prepare it, I guess. you can try worms and crickets, especially the silk worm - they are the least intimidated to eat and super tasty that you can try as snacks first - fried or stir-fry are also the best way to cook at at the beginning ^^ the spidey and scorpion are still scare me too much to eat tho

As someone who is just finding your channel for the first time, seeing this opened my eyes to new food items. Despite the "shock factor" that eating bugs gives, you're correct in that "If we enjoy sea bugs, why not enjoy land bugs as well?" I have reason to believe that some of these dishes would open my mind further to more ecologically mindful food (that is, food that takes up less land, O2, etc in the rearing and slaughtering process). I thought I'd never appreciate bugs as a food item, but my mind has been changed today, so thank you! I love to learn and reevaluate my opinions and ideals, and this challenged everything I thought I knew about ingesting bugs of all kinds, although the tarantula will take some warming up to, haha! Thanks for the knowledge! I'll be subbing!
Insects do tend to have a somewhat nutty flavor profile though. They're not all the same. Like, you wouldn't confuse an almond for a walnut. But there is that kind of earthy-woody quality that gives nuts their flavor, which insects share. Its legit food, if you can shake off your cultural biases.
I find that there is such a stigma against bugs that even though I want to eat them, I am compulsively disgusted by them. With that being said, I find the spread of knowledge on how to eat these bugs is unbelievably important for sustainability.
This is what I've been thinking too. It may be how the idea of being disgusted by insects are normalized, and now its hard to want to eat them even though that tarantula tempura looks amazing
Honestly, I genuinely wanna try all kinds of food at least once, including bugs, but coming from a poor and abusive home, bugs being in food normally means that food is bad, and when you've been forced to eat weevils or you've seen maggots all over your kitchen as a child then it gets hard to get over the idea of eating bugs and it is something that grosses me out a lot, I hope it's something I can get over in the future cuz I find this genuinely interesting
To be honest to see someone actually cook with insects instead of eating them raw makes them look way more tasty. And to be honest I am a really picky eater. But like in a sauce, Tortellini or wrap basically when I don't see them as the only ingredient this sounds like I should give it a try. Very cool video, and a host with great personality.
I am a bit sceptical about whole insect diet - but - your comment gave me an idea. Those would be realy great at a halloween family gathering - suprise your guests with some fried tarantua!
As a mexican I can confirm that insects have some original flavours. It's not in our main diet but you can find them easily looking for bolder culinary options.
I feel like it's just weird to us because most of us didn't grow up eating them. I eat all kinds of sea critters (prawns, crabs, isopods and I've even had snails) because I was raised eating them. I tried to get friends to try them and they were absolutely disgusted. I'd have no issue eating an insect just because crustaceans look a lot like insects lmao. Worms would probably be my limit just because I hate buttery, creamy textures.
That is literally the whole idea of how we can best incorporate edible insects into our diets--as a protein supplement in foods that we already know and love! Thanks for watching!
Colombian here, I can confirm that we have bugs in our diet in the form of ants (very widespread snack) and sometimes crickets. Never tried the ants myself but they say that tastes like peanuts. Edit: I tried them, the texture is gross, very salty and taste...odd, like a mixture of nut and chicharrón (similar to fried bacon).
I'm Brazilian and I was a bit confused when he said "South America". I don't think that any Brazilian would eat a bug, probably not even at the verge of starvation... It is interesting knowing that not just in some Asian countries they eat bugs but also here in America.
Brazilian myself. It is common to eat ants here too! When they are in mating season in some regions of the country we catch then, take the abdomen off and cook it with beans or rice Some people also enjoy mixing scorpions on beer to make the drink more zappy
I think eating it whole is scary for me for a person who is scared of insects, but grinding it into powder makes it less scary for me to eat. I will definitely add this to my diet
Yeah, well the only problem I could see with that is the fact that insects are probably quite expensive, maybe not to prduce, but for the customers buying the at the store.
I bought cricket powder out of curiosity and it tastes surprisingly good! I mixed it with dates, cocoa and some other ingredients to make a sort of power bar as it has good nutritional properties. Worked great!

I don’t get why people say “your truth” there’s just the Truth no?
The phrase "his truth" and/or "my truth" clearly tell me that it's not actually true
So people talk about how bugs have an amazing amount of protein compared to meat or other foods, the way we ESTIMATE protein in food is by nitrogen content.
