      Indeed - great looking little car, but hardly fast. Should've dropped a N/A screaming 1.8-2.0 petrol or the later 1.5T in it. Barely troubled the sales market in the UK. Shame. The current Civic Type R is fast, but bonkers and too big for most people. If the CR-Z came with a removeable top and had a better engine.handling, it could've stolen sales from the Mazda MX-5/Miata.

Lo and behold, 14 years later and 110,000 miles, I've got gunked up coolant in my oil. Go figure. If they had just manufactured the engine with quality cylinder heads, it likely would have gone for another 100k miles, at least. Friend of mine has an 04 Tahoe, 320k miles. Same truck. Only difference is; when his went down the assembly line all those years ago, they gave him GM cylinder heads.

      @MisterLifter My point was that I myself have always been an avid Chevy fan, and even I can admit that they're by no means perfect. The early 2000 Chevy trucks, along with the 90's models, are among some of the most reliable trucks ever made, but even that generation didn't come without its faults. If you want to get into the problems infesting the newer generation, post-bailout trucks, that's another discussion entirely.

    Love your show Scotty and I never thought this day would come but I have a clarification. The original hybrid Honda you mention that you said looked ugly was the Honda Insight. The Honda Insights were extremely reliable and got simply incredible gar mileage (over 50 mpg). They were unpopular because they were 2 seat cars which is a huge limitation but for those few people who are OK with a 2 seat car, they were great vehicles. I don't think they look ugly but I also don't know many people who are interested in a car with just 2 seats.

Dump $2-$3k in intake, exhaust, flywheel, clutch, tuning, and you've got some of the most fun per dollar out there. My headliner was good and no trans problems with 295k on clock. Transmission was buttery (with the old dash shifter, which I miss) and motor rock solid when I sold it. awesome car.

The Ep3 is a phenomenal car especially in the twist and turns or the back roads. One thing I can say is that the engine bay could be bigger and more easy to work on the motor. But overall the best and last Si hatchback in my opinion.

Car still runs wonderfully and gas mileage is still the same. Burns a little oil, but not enough to worry about. I use Mobil 1 extended life synthetic oil with the same filters. I'm shocked to hear the 02 Honda Civic Si is on the list. I currently own and have driven an '03 Civic Si (same car) for 15 years now and I'm close to having 160K trouble free miles on it. Not a single thing claimed in this video happened to me. Plus the car rides and handles great. It's a little stiff, but it's a sports(like) car and inherently has somewhat stiff suspension for sharp handling. Also, this car runs on regualr 87 octane gas, has 160hp (way more power than the standard Civic) and still gets 33 mpg highway alll day long. Plus it's an oldschool hatchback and can haul an amazing volume in its rear with the seats down. I have to call Scotty out for this one. He obviously read this somewhere and decided to regurgiate it without any real firsthand knowledge or experience with this model.

      Agreed. I have an 05 EP3 I’ve had 10 years. I just posted a comment to Scotty. Broke my heart. I mean this car is sort of rare. I’m not sure if he remembers working on them. Mine has 112k on it. Running strong. Just did it’s first trans fluid change with Honda MTF. The only sort of major issue I had was about 10 years ago when I first got the car. One of the bearings on a pulley froze. I still managed to drive it to a wedding and back home before there was a burning rubber smell. I know it was stupid. I was still young. But after that was fixed. Nothing else has major gone wrong. Just an O2 sensor that needed to be changed but that’s about it. I plan on keeping him forever :)

      '04 EP3 with 223k kilometres, bought it just over ten years ago at 90k km. So far I've HAD to replace the driver's window run channel and regulator/motor and battery. All else was maintenance. I swapped engines (original 2.0 was running excellently, just wanted mo' powah) at 150k, using OEM exhaust components until two years ago and no problems. I've never heard of blocks or manifolds cracking. Never heard of headliner issues. The tie rod/strut issue only sucks if you're doing an alignment or if you lower the car too much. It works fine otherwise. I should also mention that I've worked for Honda for eleven years now and I'd be surprised if any of my fellow technicians had ever heard of any of these issues with these cars.
      Scotty, ya fucked up, but don't take my word for it. I still like you but you're out to lunch on this car.

    • @copperlocks1
      @copperlocks1 5 років тому +5

      I have a 02 myself; the biggest fault was the stupid inner tie rods mounted too high;caused the car to bump steer when the suspension had to deal with bad roads
      ;this is corrected by using inverted tie rods. and using coilovers with 8K springs at the front and 10K springs at the back
      the second issue was the car had weak brakes for the power it had; use a JDM S2000 brake master cylinder {not USDM) to increase clamping power;or upgrade to a DC5 brembo system..more work and parts involved though
      ;change the serpentine tensioner at 110K on all K series engines;
      transmission syncro's were problematic use Redline MTL fluid;and replace shifter bushings at the transmission if worn.

    Oh well. All companies have bad models from time to time. Had an 83 Honda Accord, bad camshaft, simple fix and ran for years. 85 Honda Accord hatchback. Still got it and still running. 88 Honda Civic DX 5 speed. Great car. Traded for 89 Civic SI. Hell of a fun car. Run circles around the v6 z24 Cavalier back then, and gave many a v8 a run for their money light to light. 95 Civic EX coupe. 5 speed manual. Another great Honda. 2000 Nissan Sentra SE, 5 speed. 300,000k and still going until my son decided to fall asleep, hit a culvert and flip it end over end at 50 mph last year. Only thing ever done was change oil, shocks and struts, brake pads front and rear twice, coolant flush, brake fluid flush, and replace trans fluid regularly. 2004 Honda Civic VP coupe, 5 speed manual. Never an issue, got over 40 mpg on trips at 70 MPH plus. 3 kids and had to trade it on a 2007 Honda Odyssey. Almost 200,000 on it now. Nothing but oil changes, filter changes, Timing belt and water pump ( wish Honda would have done a chain ), brake fluid flush, trans fluid every 30,000. Finally changed over to Castrol trans fluid the past 2 changes. Best it's shifted since new. And last but not least, 2014 Honda Accord LX 6 speed manual. 95,000 so far. Yes, I have a long commute. Average around 37 mpg. I believe most issues arise from lack of maintenance and abuse. The older Odyssey trans also had a serviceable filter that no one ever touched. Honda said it was not serviceable. They also say so on the 2005-2012 or so Accords. However, there is a filter that is replaceable. I highly recommend doing so. Negatives on all the above, Brake Rotors warp. Just a Honda thing. Always has been, and from the looks of it, always will be.

      @jeremyf9124 5 років тому

      Chains stretch, which causes an efficiency loss over time. Timing belts are quieter. The disadvantage of timing belts is the cost/effort to replace them. Interference engines (piston and valves in same space at different times) are more efficient. An interference engine with a timing belt is the best setup for efficiency, but they don't last in the real world, because most people don't replace the timing belt on time, and the engine gets ruined. That's one of the reasons why you don't see many old Mitsubishis.

      The new Corolla looks to be a decent improvement over the previous version (especially in terms of styling, both inside and out), especially the higher powered version. The saloon version might even make its way to the UK for once, which is handy for me as I've currently got a gen-1 Mazda3 saloon and would like some competition for the gen-4 car (a real looker) when the time comes to look to buy a replacement. The Civic is too big and too ugly, though the engine specs are fine.

I'm not dinging Toyotas designs but the quality of their interior technology, leathers (which aren't even real leather anymore), plastics, knobs, etc, are all lacking. I have to strongly disagree with you about part of your statement regarding the Odysseys. The 95-98 Odysseys were very reliable. The engine/transmission were straight from the 4 cyl. Accord of the same time. It was mostly an Accord with a quasi-minivan body on it. The unreliable Odysseys were from 1999 and up with the V6 engines.

    • @patrickrivard4030

      You are absolutely correct on this, The 95-98 were made in Japan and were very good vans/cars. We owned a 97 and it's still on the road today with 350K, it's a little rusty, but hey, the power train is still strong. The unreliable ones were the 1999-2004. They fixed the transmission issues in the 2005 models.

Got well worth over 30k over travel costs and potential Uber costs. And it still has only 88k miles. For 17k buckaroos. 100 dollars 170 times. 170x hundred bills. WELL WORTH IT. I can still drive it until 350k+ and I am mechanically inclined. It will be my daily that I can easily maintain and replace parts, even engine with my mechanically inclined skills and friend circle.

      Yes the first gen was Accord based. The EX was also sold as the Isuzu Oasis starting in 96. Isuzu continued to sell it through 99, I had one of the very last ones. Good 2.3 VTec and solid trans but had issues with heater core(nightmare job), brakes and water leaks.

  • @NGMonocrom
    @NGMonocrom 5 років тому +3

    Thanks Scotty! Fun fact: When the SUV craze first hit America, ISUZU was lucky! Just happened to be in the right place at the right time with their line-up of SUVs. Honda had zero at the time, and was late to the party. So while they began development of what later became their first Honda Pilot, they wanted to sell an SUV *NOW!*
    So they made a deal with ISUZU. Honda got ISUZU's Rodeo renamed the "PassPort." In exchange for the Honda Odyssey. But with 4 conventional doors and renamed the "Oasis." I think Honda got the better end of that deal as who in their right mind wants a minivan with conventional doors that make going in and out more restricting.

    • @jeremyf9124
      @jeremyf9124 5 років тому

      Honda had the CR-V since 1997. They were looking for mid-size SUVs. Isuzu wanted a minivan. The Honda Passport is an Isuzu Rodeo, and the Acura (Honda's prestige brand) SLX is an Isuzu Trooper. The Isuzu Oasis is a re-badged 1st generation Honda Odyssey. The 1st gen (1995-1998) Odyssey/96-99 Oasis had conventional doors. The 2nd generation Odyssey had sliding doors.

    One car that I will stack up against ANYTHING Scotty has in his Toyota
    lot is the Civic 2dr hatch from the late 90's to around 2000. I had a
    2000 and that Civic was the best laid out small car I had ever seen.
    With the rear seats folded down, it could haul as much as most
    much larger SUV's and the things were super reliable. I still see some
    driving around with over 300K on the clock and still running well.
    This was THE best hatchback ever made. Yes, there are 4dr hatchbacks that
    are longer and larger. But none have the combination of the old Civic's
    width and cargo bay area relative to it's overall
    short length. I would love to find another of these (My son got into
    a wreck with ours when it had 250K on it's odometer). Of all the cars
    I have ever owned, the 2000 Civic Hatchback is the one I miss the most.
