The soft point ammo has a shorter overall length and the bullets move forward in the magazine. The modification to the BAR magazines that make it hold open on the last round, is by a lever protruding through a hole in the back of the mag. This usually happens when the follower passes by, and the lever is held back by the heads of the rounds in the mag. Soft point ammo moves forward just enough to allow the bar to protrude enough to actuate the bolt hold open.

I heard a great story of a retired police armorer living in rural Tennessee. His police department gifted him a real BAR. Apparently. He had a real use for it on his retirement acerage. His sons & daughters & grandchildren, were extremely relieved and impressed. Post full auto discharge, several magazines into the nearby woods at a real threat. Just once. Peace was restored forthwith.

That's a very nice semi-automatic rifle! Plenty of range and stopping power, with a free-floated 20" barrel for better precision, and chambered for relatively inexpensive ammo. Better yet, it didn't jam even once - until you switched to hunting ammo.
From an 82 year old retired navy and CPB retired. I think you should take this show on the road. Extremely entertaining and lots fun crazy stuff. Well done.
Truly impressive rifle. That is pretty much what I thought I wanted when I was a teenager. Grandpas brother was a WWII vet. He said 30-06 was too heavy to carry all day, day after day so I ended up with a 7.62x39 rifle. But that is everything I expected it to be. Granted, m1Garande and BAR were the only options back then. What an absolute Beast. There's a lot to be said about an '06 even on the shooting range people shooting 308 to 5.56 9 mm and then someone breaks out the 06. It startles most people. You can see the grass in front of the concussion wave that it produces. Unfortunately ammo is insanely expensive.

The 30-06 is a really common hunting round here in Sweden. It's what I've been using during the moose and deer season since I was a kid. It's a pleasure to shoot, even in the bolt actions we tend to use here in the north.
@@kountrygunz2032 Yup. I love my 742 Woodsmaster carbine. It kicks like a mule though, and I've got the bruises to prove it. The .308 and 7.62 NATO were designed to replace the "long action" Garand and 30-06 BAR with the "short action" M-14. The shorter cartridge and short action M-14 enabled squad riflemen to carry slightly more ammo and the action cycled slightly faster than the BAR. The M-14 was also several pounds lighter than the BAR behemoth. But there is a slight ballistic coefficient advantage of the 30-06 slug over the .308, depending on bullet weight. Also, the 30-06 can be loaded to higher pressures than the .308, resulting in faster terminal velocities, longer flatter trajectories, and several hundred foot/pounds of energy advantages over the 308. I own a Springfield M1A SOCOM but am also interested in the HCAR because for all practical purposes it is a replacement for the legendary BAR which is the beast that started all this. Also, sometimes when you can't find .308/7.62 NATO ammo, you'll always be able to find 30-06 ammo, because its been manufactured since 1905, albeit now with modern primers and powder. Finally, reloading equipment and materials for 30-06 exist almost everywhere in the US and this caliber is mostly associated (in the minds of ATF and gun-grabbers) as a hunting cartridge, and not as an "assault rifle" cartridge. So I think the 30-06 flies under the radar better than 5.56 NATO or .223 and .308/7.62 NATO. Thank you for this entertaining and eye opening video! Really enjoyed it. Awesome!
@ Cannonballer - Re: "The M-14 was also several pounds lighter than the BAR behemoth. But there is a slight ballistic coefficient advantage of the 30-06 slug over the .308, depending on bullet weight. Also, the 30-06 can be loaded to higher pressures than the .308, resulting in faster terminal velocities, longer flatter trajectories, and several hundred foot/pounds of energy advantages over the 308" Everything you stated is right on the money. The 30-06 is, at least for most military and firearms historians, the most-significant center-fire rifle cartridge of the 20th century. There are other contenders, of course, for all of those fans of the 7.92x57/8mm Mauser and .303 British cartridges.... but the '06 makes a great case for itself. The BAR - which saw service at the end of WWI (John Browning's son, Val, entered the Army and taught men how to use his dad's invention properly), was relatively anachronistic by the time of WWII and Korea. No quick-change barrel, no ability to feed from belted or linked ammo, etc. - but that thing hit harder than a freight train. Which is one reason the GIs & Marines loved 'em. The military never did utilize the extra case volume of the 30-06 - which is a long-action cartridge case - to its fullest extent, which is why the 7.62x51 NATO (.308 Winchester in civilian form) was shortened 12mm. Dues to advances in propellants after the war, the new M80 Ball/FMJ round matched the ballistic performance of M2 Ball/FMJ 30-06, both of which utilized 147-grain to 150-grain full-metal jacket projectiles at around 2,800 fps. Modern reloaders and ammo makers, however, can do great things with the 30-06, if they select the proper propellants and bullet designs. Either for hunting or tactical use. Of course, tactical use is a non-starter since the Army has gone to 300 Win-Mag next up in power above the .308. But you can get near-Magnum performance out of the -06 if you do your homework. There's really not a lot the old girl can't do.....
@@GeorgiaBoy1961 With a much deeper throat and larger case capacity the 30-06 is much more versatile than the .308 if you are hand loading or buying premium ammo.
Fantastic video thank you. I remember my Dad teaching me how to shoot (he was in the Army in the early 1950's and I believe they were still using the M1 Garand) and when I complained about the recoil using a lesser round than the 30-06 he just laughed and said something like..."Son soldiers in WW2 were shooting the M1 Grand 30-06 with a Wooden Stock and the average infantry man weighed 140 lbs and shot it in combat for months at a time. (I was 180 lbs at the time and we were just at the range), so stop your complaining." Might have to buy this rifle!

I literally just noticed this rifle two days ago. And you’re already making videos on it!? Sweet!!! The BAR is so awesome, 30.06 Springfield is my favorite caliber hands down. I’m also a millennial, not even a dad yet. Noreen Firearms also makes a badass rifle chambered in 30.06 Springfield. That PT Cruiser is epic.
I'm curious why you said you're a millennial, and not a dad yet? I'm 36 and a millennial and I got a kid, since we are sharing. I also like a cold glass of sweet tea.
Considering the amount of rounds that are based on the 30-06 cartridge it's safe to say that that is the granddaddy cartridge of American wildcaters. That cartridge is a great all-round hunting round that's a great all around distant shooting ground especially with some custom fast twist barrels and there's a reason why so many some automatic guns or chambered in 30 ought 6 for civilian consumption.
The 30-06 deer gun isn't an all-around hunting cartridge, it is a short-range deer gun. If the 30-06 was so great, then hunters wouldn't have made the 300 win mag a top choice for hunting in the 30 cal rifles. As an Alaska pro hunting guide for 26 years someone would be a idiot to use a 30-06 for brown bears or Grizzlies and Yukon moose, doing so puts you and the people with you at risk of getting killed !.

@@hansgruber9685 Yes that is true. It was a rethorical question but I guess the large calibre = powerful really comes from the world war time, when increasing (penetrative) power meant ever growing projectile diameters (Tanks from 20 to 120 mm over 20 years). Until they figured out that sub-caliber projectiles have vast advantages in aerodynamics and penetration power. However there are german anti tank rifles in hunting rifle calibre, which sounds unbelievable but utilizes exactly these principles. Of course these have ridiculously large shell casings and powder amounts, but fit a 7,62 bullet. Looks bizarre but the smaller the penetrator, the less armor has to be cut through.

I do not remember how long, but I do remember seeing an article on this awesome rifle a few years ago. So long ago, I actually had forgotten all about it. It was a great write up with a positive review. It is great to see this rifle has not fallen to negative reviews and is still going strong. When the BAR was deployed, 3 men were generally committed to it within a squad. One to field it, and 2 to help support it's ammunition needs. In a load out, the ammo gathers weight quickly. For this reason I feel the 06 is better suited for defensive positions or close to supply lines. The 7.62 x 51, is better suited for mobility and this is why it was adopted. Both were originally designed for hunting. That said, I love 30-06 and this rifle. I am not knocking on this cartridge or rifle. My grandfather sat behind twin 30s, in the tail of a dive bomber. Which gives me pride of the 30-06, along with my M1 Garand. Now to actually watch this video .....

If you want to run hunting ammo with no troubles grab a surplus BAR magazine. The old bar mags don't have the cutout for last round bolt hold open and are 20 rounders so those are the drawbacks.

Everything you stated is right on the money.
(I was 180 lbs at the time and we were just at the range), so stop your complaining."

@@hansgruber9685
Yes that is true.

That feeling when this gun fully loaded and kitted is just as light as the new gun the US army approved.
How can I buy one?
Im absolutely jealous! i have a 24 inch 556, 30 rounds, bipod and scope and i'm sitting at 16.5lbs. Which is kinda insane for a 5.56 rifle. My rifle pulls odd looks because its so large for its caliber
How much did u pay..??
@@ashtonbull5758 their package with case etc was like $4500 in 2016.
Very nice gun, but I'm most impressed by how he can still hear anything.
Missing my grandpa every day, since i was a child (he died when i was 5) but i have little memories with him; also we keep his double barrel shotgun, quite old (with the external hammers and double triggers), and keep it with the same care as mine for trapshooting.
The intro made me smiling a lot, also thinking about my grandpa teaching me hunting or just going to do some trapshooting...that hits really in the feelings🖤
I thought I had all the rifles I'd ever need, now I think I got to get one of these!
that how it goes
The 30-06 is a great round! Everything from 110gr HP to 220gr PEP!
You never can have enough guns that's what I say
Just looked them up and they run almost as much as a M82. Just spring for the .50.
@@Jes9119 where are you getting an m82 for less than 10k? They usually run about 12k.
Channel never disappoints. I've actually been waiting for a good shoot vid with the HCAR.
Am I wrong, or is Scott a verified badass sharphooter? He hardly misses regardless of the gun and sights he is using on the fly. Epic.
Love the H.C.A.R. Happy New Year Scott! Can’t wait to see more videos in 2022.
That rifle has been making shooters happy for a lot of years. Nice to see they still do.
That "you just got jammed" clip never gets old. Absolutely hilarious
What movie is that clip from?
@@Endor2001 pretty sure its from a TV show, i think maybe Parks & Recreation? I could be wrong though
@@easbreid9879 thanks

Chuckles* "sort of".
Thank you, Scott, for the amazing content AND for removing those terrible PT Cruisers from the road. You're doing God's work, my friend.
OMG! you are not kidding.... please come to Washington State and put the PT Cruisers into extinction, there are too many still roaming the streets.
I always thought that the PT cruiser looked like something Mr Dillinger would drive to the bank.
Super stoked to see more 30-06! I'd love to see you take her out a little further and see how the rifle performs!
Thousand would be nice.
Yes
For $5500 it should be able to reach out. How about a real review instead of Demo Ranch gayness?
Trigger pull? Travel,break?
C'mon ,throw me a T Rex!
You are the .500 S&W Bossman!
That thing is a beast! The BAR has always been one of my favourite rifles so it's cool to see a modern variant.
I also learned a new word today. "Hominy". Who says guns aren't educational?

"FREAKIN' G*DDAMMIT AWESOME"!!! 🤣🤣🤣
I have been wanting an HCAR since I learned about it several years ago.... This video only made that desire greater...
I don’t think it‘s an accurate assessment to say that this rifle is "going strong". I doubt it’s a good seller.
@@borkwoof696 Agreed. Ohio Ordinance put this out 6-7yrs ago. It may be a good seller for them over their semi BAR, but it is not popular in the firearms community.
I've shot a couple of these now and one thing I took away from both times is to have that lite of recoil with a 30-06 is impressive to say the least... Definitely a really cool gun and great video as always keepem coming brother!!!
If you want to run hunting ammo with no troubles grab a surplus BAR magazine.
The old bar mags don't have the cutout for last round bolt hold open and are 20 rounders so those are the drawbacks.
Worked for us with all the ammo types we were able to try, even the ones that had given us trouble with bolt hold open.
I know this video is from a couple years ago, I just wanted to let everyone know in case it could help.
The firearm is amazing, but can we just take a minute of respect for this guys accuracy!?
I thought the same thing! When he shot like ten 2 liters in a row, in like 5 seconds 😅
We all cant get we gets or afford the guns he gets. his videos get stupid.

the guy isnt more than 15 paces away
@@remydaitch9815 the steel he was probably 50 - 70yards
Stretch was a good man . He fought valiantly for his country , and those around him . He will be missed 😢
It's really interesting to see the soundwave/shockwave? when each projectile hits the steel targets. Awesome stuff!
Ok that intro was hilarious. I've been subbed awhile but that makes it even better. Humor is sadly missing in our world.
jeez, the impact on those steel targets is insane
I was thinking the same thing. Look at the energy transfer into the soft targets. Makes the 223/556 look like somebody threw a rock. I can see why Patton said the M1 was the best battle rifle ever for fighting.
Nothing clever or silly to say this week. I'm just glad you're still with us Scott. Keep on keeping on
My Grandad bestowed to me his pump action 30.06, with 2 four round magazines. So fun to shoot, but now I want one of those!
I love these overpowered videos!
"Why can't we all live in peas and hominy?" Wise words
Visualize whirled peas!
I wish I had that rifle I think it would be great for hunting. And also by the looks of it it doesn't have a large recoil. Also to add, my heart goes out to the people of Kentucky who were effected by the tornado. Thanks for the video Scott keep it up buddy 👍
I loved this video! But I will say seeing how many 30-06 rounds you shot in this video makes me understand why I couldn’t find any for deer season this year…you have all of them😂
Love that gun! Awesome but in wrong hands is scary. Nice video! Lol. Also veteran/LEO 20 years but now disabled because of job. No regrets! Yeah I almost lost my head with that round! Its a killer alright. Good video bro.
