  • This week we have a very special guest for you, it has been my honour to be able to interview Dr. Peter Breggin.
Dr. Breggin is a Harvard-trained psychiatrist and former Consultant at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH). He has been called “The Conscience of Psychiatry” for his many decades of successful efforts to reform the mental health field.
His work provides the foundation for modern criticism of psychiatric diagnoses and drugs, and leads the way in promoting more caring and effective therapies. His research and educational projects have brought about major changes in the FDA-approved Full Prescribing Information or labels for dozens of antipsychotic and antidepressant drugs. He continues to educate the public and professions about the tragic psychiatric drugging of America’s children.
He has authored dozens of scientific articles and more than twenty books, including medical books and the bestsellers Toxic Psychiatry and Talking Back to Prozac. His most recent three books are Guilt, Shame and Anxiety: Understanding and Overcoming Negative Emotions; Medication Madness: the Role of Psychiatric Drugs in Cases of Violence, Suicide and Murder; and Psychiatric Drug Withdrawal: A Guide for Prescribers, Therapists, Patients and their Families.
As a medical-legal expert, Dr. Breggin has unprecedented and unique knowledge about how the pharmaceutical industry too often commits fraud in researching and marketing psychiatric drugs. He has testified many times in malpractice, product liability and criminal cases, often in relation to adverse drug effects and more occasionally electroshock and psychosurgery. A list of his trial testimony since 1985 is contained in the last section of his Resume on Dr. Breggin's website.
Dr. Breggin has taught at many universities and has a private practice of psychiatry in Ithaca, New York.
For a career as long and distinguished as Dr. Breggin’s we have decided to devote two episodes to hearing him speak. This first part covers Dr. Breggin's career, his views on psychiatry and psychiatric drugs and also recent developments with the trial involving Michelle Carter.
Part 2 of the interview will focus more on the trial and Dr. Breggin’s involvement.

After half my life, sixteen years of asking psychs to withdraw my meds then eventually denied I've decided I'm tapering off them myself. Thanks Dr. Breggin for your book psychiatric drug withdrawal.

It seems like once someone you know starts on these doctor prescribed mind altering drugs, I have difficulty reasoning with them. This is very distressing when it's someone you love. Both my sister and mother have been taking them, and now my wife. I start thinking maybe it's me... but I didn't have much interaction with my mother and sister before they started taking them they live in a different town. They make them slow to think, any conflicts or situations that require advanced conflict resolution are simply avoided by them. The problems remain, but they simply are not addressed.

I was on them for nearly 30 years, and found out the hard way, when thinking when I stopped, it wasn't a big deal. Now about 7 years off, and my social IQ is rising. When I went to a clinical psychologist, I couldn't remember more than 3 numbers, now I recall more than 7 (off the neurotoxins), but I couldn't sleep for at least 4 years after withdrawing for more than 1-2 hours a night... nothing can compare to the agony they've put me through, in my later years however, I'm so much happier now, though I lost my career, my relationships, any kind of life I should have had. "The Myth of Mental Illness," by Thomas Szasz who was a colleague of my grandfather is right after all. I still feel the effects (tinnitus) of those neurotoxins, but I'm able to enjoy life now, and can read books and concentrate more than I ever could. I wouldn't want my worst enemy to go through what I have, well maybe (sorry) those who are so cavalier with how they make their living @@williamvaughan1218

Subscribed! I LOVE Peter Breggin, he is one of my heroes. He is such a beautiful soul. You can tell how much he cares, that is so very rare in psychiatry. My psychiatrist referred me to a nutritionist today after I told her I would NEVER go to the treatment resistant depression clinic because the only thing my insurance covers is ECT/brain trauma. Fuck that! I listened to his video on it and immediately called the clinic and told them I was cancelling my appointment. It’s barbaric! My psychiatrist actually agrees with me and is helping me get off of gabapentin and eventually suboxone. I have been on antidepressants for years and had a seizure due to them about six months ago. I nearly died. There is nothing safe about them. He is an angel for telling the world the truth about these awful drugs. I want to follow in his footsteps.

Allyson Anderson You ought to have seen all the prescriptions that were “accidentally” mailed to me, one after another, after another ad nauseous. I even had a Dr. tell me, “ you can take all that you want and it won’t hurt you. “

This man is the Angel of Psychiatry. It’s a horrific SHAME that all shrinks aren’t like this man. I’ve been privileged to know an Angel of a physician, he’s very much like Dr Breggin (sadly he has retired, taking away from the sick a VERY AMAZING CARING Doctor. Miss you very much Doc J!)!!! I wish Dr Breggin was the Doctor in charge of my older brother’s psychological issues. Maybe then my brother wouldn’t be the paranoid, violent, mentally devestated shell of who he used to be.

I had 12 ECT Treatments at University Hospital in Salt Lake City. They didn’t give me the info I should’ve been given about the terrible long term effects. I had never had suicidal thought before the ECT treatments, but constantly battle the thoughts now. I have very little memory of what happened, but my friend told me I was flatlined. I only remember being told immediately before the treatments “Don’t worry. We will breathe for you.” I had no idea what they were doing to me. Some of my friends thought I was doing better because I had anxiety before the treatments, buy was very quiet and submissive after the treatments, even though, I filled out a form before each treatment, saying I felt no improvement in my mood. My short term memory is terrible and I forget the answers to questions I ask several times, even though I had the ECT treatments 2 years ago. I can’t express my feelings the way I once could. I feel like my brain is mush. What can I do? I could literally feel evil in the hospital.

Peter Breggin is actually moral, since he believes in the potential of everyone. He does not follow the Standard of Care ethics of vetted Psychiatrists. Moral - not lockstep rule ethics: with its pessimistic disease-like labeling, neurotoxic drugs and securing people as cash cows!

Psychiatry is similar to pharmacology and virology. They are all based on the error of the specific aetiology of human pathology. These disciplines in their machinations violate the rules and protocols of the scientific method. That is not to say that no good has come from practitioners but that it has is a product of good luck more than anything else.
