SCP-2967 - Sapient Cephalopods : Object Class - Euclid : Sentient SCP
Item #: SCP-2967
Object Class: Euclid
Special Containment Procedures: SCP-2967 and SCP-2967-1 are to be contained in a 5.5 meter cubical reinforced glass tank, with water containing 3.5% salinity (seawater), kept at roughly 8 °C at all times. This tank is to be cleaned at least twice per week, at which point SCP-2967 and SCP-2967-1 will be relocated briefly to an observation tank. The top of SCP-2967's containment tank is to remain closed at all times, with the exception of cleaning and feeding. SCP-2967 and the six SCP-2967-1 are to be each fed two live clams, whelks, or small fish daily. When interacting with SCP-2967, prawns or small crabs are acceptable for use as incentive for a response. SCP-2967 and SCP-2967-1 are allowed a number of 'toys' to keep occupied in primary containment, such as building blocks, plastic fish (though too large to be edible), and a small magnetic slate with a stylus attached. For testing and routine intelligence checks, SCP-2967 is to be relocated to the observation tank in the room adjacent to its containment chamber. Unsupervised communication with SCP-2967 is currently prohibited.

yeagh dude they live forever
Unholy screeching

Nice.
Until about a month ago I had no idea what you were talking about. But I am glad to say I do now.
There are a lot of SCP’s that are essentially “animals what think like hooman,” but this feels like the most realistic portrayal of that cliche.
1. This shows that an animal with anomalously high intelligence would attempt to spread said intellect to the rest of their species, to the point of almost “rubbing off” their ability to think to their students.
2. The fact that highly intelligent anomalies would most likely be aware of each other’s existence due to their similar natures putting pressure on each other for which one would become dominant. In other words, a form of “if I exist, then there must be others, and if others exist, they threaten my kind becoming dominant.”
3. The portrayal of the animals being smart, but still not fully able to communicate with humans as quickly as we can. Most other animal SCP’s are being shown to have a full grasp on human language, to the point of some of them being able to speak human language despite not having the right vocal chords to do so.
4. Octopi and crows are considered some of the most intelligent creatures known to man aside from man itself. Octopi are one of the few things that can learn via observation, and crows have been known to not only remember which humans give them food, but _communicate_ which humans give them food to other crows.
Top notch deconstruction of the “talking animal SCP,” very nice.
Seriously though, octopi and crows are scarily smart. I once read a 4chan post where a guy straight up started a war between a group of blackbirds by feeding one set and harassing the other. They literally fought their own kind to the death based on loyalty or hatred of one guy. There’s also that story of the octopus who actually figured out how to short circuit his aquarium by climbing up the side of the tank and spraying water ate the light fixture and nobody could figure out why there were all these short circuits because they never thought it would be the freaking invertebrate in the tank who was nowhere near anything electrical.
I thought SCP supposed to be unrealistic. It suppose to be anomalous/impossible/weird/creepy, not realistic.
But to each their own, I guess.
Well, yes, but this one seems to reflect actually reality the most. Sure, it’s impossible, but it’s less impossible than, say, a coyote that can speak clear English. There is very little anomalous about this SCP, other than the abnormally high intellect of the octopus.
Some seem less or more realistic to you personally :]. Other people consider different SCPs realistic :].
Having just discovered this discussion, I am replying to this trend because I am working on my own SCP which is anomalous by essentially being a species of 'intelligent animals' (with the exception of genetic and physiological differences). If these SCPs interest you, then I would be very interested to share it in a brief discussion and learn from your perspectives. There are several aspects about the "intelligent animal" concept that I have problems with conveying correctly. Although the draft needs to be revised (in both structure and content), I can link anyone to it on the Sandbox Wiki if they would like to dive deeper into the concept. Any form of critique and feedback is greatly appreciated!

Hentai ?
De Moe chan holy shit I literally did not even think of that. I’ve heard that exact phrase but didn’t apply it to the comment, I thought they were talking about the overabundance of sapient animal SCP’s
Ok ok ok, I get shit man calm down
Causing a blockage in the filtration system of another tank, then preceding to escape the tank and eat the relocated crabs is not really that strange. My grandfather worked at an aquarium and there was a time when the crabs they fed the octopus started to disappear. The staff couldn’t figure out why, but one night my grandfather was walking by the tank where they kept the crabs when he heard something. After turning on the light he saw the octopus in the crab tank eating the crabs. When the octopus saw him, it put the crabs down, got out of the crab tank, went down the hall, and got back to its own tank. I swear, this is a true story, so it’s not to strange that this SCP got out of its tank to eat the crabs
What if SCP-2967 was mistaken for an anomalous creature because of that crab incident and then turned out to be an anomalous entity?
@@elgitarr_
Octopus is more intelligence than a Penquin.
I’ve caught octopi with a net and can confirm they have some limited locomotion on land.
There is a story of someone feeding an octopus shrimp and one of them was sorta spoiled so the octopus grabbed it and climbed out of its tank and went to the office of the person that fed it and threw it on his desk and then returned to its tank.
Alex Boehm I’ve heard of octopus doing that before

i'm proud of you Dr. Miller

I don't understand. It's said "Miller PHD" in the background on the chalk board for ages. Why is he only just now referring to himself as Doctor?
PK Cheap proubably a spoken rule. Like how people don’t call someone “Captain” despite them owning a boat. He has probably been able to lead research instead of being led.

This SCP is pretty great. I like that it didn't arrive sentient, and got smarter in captivity. Most SCP just show up weird and maybe get weirder. This one showed up kinda normal and got weird. Plus, the crow is a great addition. It's cool that they are competing with each other to replace us.
Human will last for long time.
sentience and sapiantce are 2 completely and utterly unrelated things
@@thejurassicwarewolf3300 I would argue that sapience is a more advanced or evolved kind of sentience.
also, it has an IQ of 117, which is a lot for an octopus, but nice at best for a human, further adding to your point
@@marcopohl4875 Average human IQ is 90
So basically, the Octopus and the Crow are the Progenitors of the Heirs of Humanity. I stand with the Octopus, they will be cool once we're gone.
Crows and thus birds are the relatives of the dinosaurs. Octopi have been on the scene since before the dinosaurs. Idk it'd be a hard choice for me. I'd try to broker peace, honestly.
Now this just gives me ideas. What if the octopuses win in that evolutionary battle, take the mantle of Humanity, then form religion and boom, you've got Deep Lovecraftian horrors.
Alternatively, you have the crows win and they just end up selling you weapons.
Manti Core my money's on them too. Their arms are better for tools
I don't know if i'm the only one but I imagine if the crows take the mantle of humanity I imagine them becoming those crow demons from dark souls
Splatoon. That is all I have to say.
Just tell the poor guy that he's not in trouble for saying what he said.
no, it acted that way because it's LITERALLY FUCKING SCARED OF THE CROWS BECAUSE IT KNOWS THEY'RE COMING FOR HIM. Right after he freaks out they all start hanging out right near the area of the building he lives at and the big one drops A DEAD FUCKING OCTOPUS OFF OUTSIDE

We must prepare for the great crow-octopus war...
#TeamCrow

*grabs popcorn*
But what about the preparation for the *S K E L E T O N W A R*
chances are that in that universe, a bunch of species becoming sapient all the sudden is probably a sign for a future extinction event. So preparing for the event prior to the great crow-octupus war might be a priority.
I thought it said sentient clipboards
pffhahahaha
Yes thats a scp it just doesnt exist yet
Honestly, there’s been more ridiculous ones. A sentient calculator, a sentient drawing, a sentient cow heart, a sentient set of office supplies, sentient rocks, sentient garbage, sentient frogs, practically everything’s sentient by now.
Cheese Wizard nice
@Cheese Wizard, Your name gave me the idea of a reality bending cheese scp.
I have no idea how one would go about writing that but I'm sure it can be done.
Sooooo crows and octopuses are fighting each other to become the next dominant species?
Makes sense.
good luck for them, im pretty sure that, they wont have that chance to find out, if the devil's child dont destroy everything, im pretty sure the alien robots in jupiter will.
or titania's prison finally dies and all the most horrid creatures contained by the children of the night gets released, or with humans gone 682 gets free and kills everything, or the scarlett king happens, pretty much everything that the foundation has worked to keep from happening will happen like basically if the wind blows a bit too hard the rest of life on earth will end
It’s pretty interesting when you think about it though, because humanity has a nearly perfect defense against being destroyed by an intelligent SCP: their imprisonment of all the other SCPs. If humanity is destroyed, the facilities will stop functioning and whatever took us out will have to contend with all the most likely far worse creatures that we found unique ways to keep under control. It’s sure as hell not guaranteed protection in the crazy world of SCPs, but it’s way more effective than you’d expect considering the whole point of this kind of horror is to show just how small and insignificant we are as a species.
"Why you hate crows man?"
"Oh, because they're next after we get rid of you."
"Oh, ok...what?"
"What?"
But can he predict football matches?
😂
Yes, but he's got a 50/50 shot of being wrong.
Can he?
So it's a smart octopus who has an army of children and a god complex
An army of six
And apparently is at war with intelligent crows!
WeariestLion81 but 8 arms each, that’s like, 48 arms
yeah but except the god complex and its army consist of just 6 regular-sized octopusses so far.
@@flipflierefluiter5665 'so far'...
For those of you wondering:
Sentient means self-aware. Animals are sentient, plants are not.
Sapient means as intelligent as humans. Neither plants nor animals (excluding humans) are sapient.
Just going of the Latin roots, sentient means feeling and sapient means thinking (real thinking/intelligence, not cleverbot). Which works better for me to remember (a little French also helps).

Thank you

2967's really don't seem super bad, no reason we couldn't live together, be brothers in arms and all that.
I sea what you did there
The octopedes shall conquer the sea.
The humans have conquered the land.
The crows will conquer the skies.
Together, we're gonna conquer the stars.
Until the crow nation attacks
@@brandonvelde5774 Is it coincidence that is you put all three of us together you get something Akin to Cthulu? I think not.
@@zacharyroach2067 The plot thickens.
I for one welcome a world of sentient crows and octopi that would share equal standing with humans, even going so far as splitting the world into species specific territory. That'd be interesting
knowing human history we'd put them in "reserves" that keep on getting smaller and smaller untill we just make them go extinct.
Sound familliar?
I'd be cool with a society of intelligent octopi, as I don't see too much conflict coming from that outside of a bad oil spill or something. So it'd be another reason to work on weaning away from fossil fuels. Otherwise octopi seem like they'd be pretty cool, and making an ally of a species that lives in the ocean would be INCREDIBLY helpful for a huge amount of reasons.
Crows I'd be more worried about. Birds occupy similar geographic regions as humans, and are generally pretty jerky. I'd see a lot more conflict coming from a society of intelligent birds.
Eventually with more than one sapient race the resources needed for buildings, etc. are gonna be depleted so that's when the war starts
ocean - octopi
air - crows
land - humans
Undoubtedly overpopulation would be such a problem we'd wipe each other out.
This is actually really interesting! Crows and Octopuses are known to be some of the most intelligent animals on earth. When SCP-2967 says 'fight to be next you, when you are gone' I believe it's referring to who will inherit the earth as the most intelligent/dominant species when humans are eliminated. Honestly, I wouldn't be surprised if crows or octopuses inherited the human role in our absence. I love this file so much omg
I'm rooting for the ants or bees. Get some hivemind up in this planet.
Why fight over whose next when they can't inhabit the same parts of the earth anyway? Surely they are intellectual enough to allow the crows to take over land, and octopus the sea without interfering in each other's agenda.
Think about how all of us intellectual beings actually act. Do you really think things would go that way?
Tell that to the humans
I thought the same thing. Maybe they're too nervous of eventual competition and want to take the other out before they have to worry about it.
Would we allow a sentient race in the ocean to dominate the seas?
10 million year long cold war until one evolved thumbs.
Oh hey it’s Gilbert and his family (Containment “it’s only us” special episode)
Crows and Octopi. Two of the most intelligent animals (aside from man) having a war between who will rule the world once the humans die.
*_I like it. I'm voting for the Octopi. Since crows can't go underwater_*
the octopi already control countless amounts of submerged natural resources - they're gonna exhaust the crows economically
No Idea fukin yeah yeah
But octopi cant fly so yea, let's go octopi

SCP-2967 would not like SCP-049
I'm confused, why?
Tate Amstutz CROW!
But hes not a crow? Hes just some monster man who likes cleansing the world.
Tate Amstutz his look, the plague doctor has a crow-like appearance.
Also his cure is keeping the humans from extinction blocking the era of the octopus from beginning.
So hyper intelligent octopus, who are safe to be around. Right?
More like hyper intelligent crows and octopuses who are fighting to be the next dominant species.
Sounds about right. Personally, if I had a say in it, I'd like to help the octopi become the dominant ones.
Birds are assholes in the wild.
From the ocean back to it.
Idk it'd be a toss up for me as to who to uplift. I'd want both.
I couldn't agree more. Birds have shit on my car once too often!!!!!!!
And Gilbert was right, the ocean is beautiful... even with the dead giant octopus in the middle...
Oh that’s just Octavio. Don’t worry about him, just don’t let him learn about dubstep.
Actually, with the speed that cephalapods can evolve this might not be fiction for long. Look it up
I'm pretty sure, the "Origin" Story of the SCP did actually happen somewhere and the SCP is the Octopus from that one Incident.
Nah mate if they end up threatening us they would be quickly wiped out.
Short lifespans just mean they evolve even faster.
Long lifespans are required to adquiere knowledge though.
Some species living in colder waters can live for 50+ years I think I read somewhere. Thats pretty long in the animal kingdom.
Crows are meh, Lord Bung convinced me that the coolest bird is an ostrich
Class A Amnesics ie: Vodka.
I really enjoy these longer readings. I know its probably tedious and annoying to do, just know its all appreciated. Hopefully there will be more like the red sea artifact in the future.

So crows and octopi want to be the dominant species after us
Extinct but not forgotten Eeyup.
im pretty impressed with your presentation methods. they really make listening to scp's alot more interesting and authentic.
Dr. Eh? Finally got your doctorate, or just a job position?
The crazy thing is that there’s a lot of true stories about octopuses escaping their tank, going into another tank and killing and eating everything and then going back to their tank.
This is the backstory to Splatoon!
Think as long as they don’t start saying “Hail Hydra!” we should be okay.

SCP-2967: So long, and thanks for all the fish.
recently realized that I (and it seems everyone else) have been spelling researcher/Dr. Millar's name wrong. I greatly apologize to the Volgun and Millar. i have to wonder why Dr. Millar has not had a rant about this, like the one for "Keter". another thing i wonder about is everyone congratulating Millar on using his doctorate title. Millar has indicated he has had a phd (on the chalkboard) since I have been watching the Volgun, for a few months now. when i started watching, he introduced himself as Researcher Millar. the chalkboard had Researcher Millar, p.h.d. not long after that, the switch to introducing himself as Dr. started. didn't think much about it until i started noticing changes in Millar. i will end with a question that came to me as i wrote this, what is Millar's first name? Could it be ... Researcher?

14:13 Good to know the foundation has an entire task force centered around dispatching birds.
Octopi can't fly and crows can't breathe underwater so how would they fight? Go to the shore and scratch insults at each other in the mud?
That's our new tale series right there. "The Birds 2: War for the Planet of the Cephalopods"
I'm pretty sure Connor's octopus friend in confinement is SCP-2967.
I hope Gilbert is still out there, getting mad octopussy
Doctor Miller....has a nice ring to it =)
This is a prime example of why object classes are for how easy it is to contain an SCP and NOT how dangerous they are.
You could say the octopus was feeling *CROW*ded
'puts on sunglasses' YYEEEAAAAHHHHH!
I really like this SCP. It's unsettling because I could definitely see either of them becoming the next dominant species, and even more unsettling because we all know that we won't be around forever, and if two species rise to fill the same niche without learning of our mistakes, they will be doomed to repeat them.
I'd like to see Levi make the acquaintance of SCP-2662.
This is one scp i would love to be assigned to.
Bucket list: play tic-tac-toe with an octopus
So... a war between sapient Octopi and sapient Crows, how the hell would that turn out and why?
Well crows can't swim and water takes up 2/3 of the earth, I'd say the octopi win this one.
In the long run the birds would win if they could evolve to the point of either having dexterity like fingers and create technology with which to poison or otherwise destroy the octopi. The octopi on the other hand wouldn't be able to go above stone age tech while submerged.
Neither can engage the other, no winner, no loser

Goddamn, I really love this scp. It’s not an op reality warping, earth destroying entity with an overly complex containment protocol, which makes it feel believable. It’s smart, but not infinity iq level psychic god that speaks every language perfectly, it still just an animal that has room to learn and will continue to do so. The addition of the crows gives it some good complexity. The Opctopi are in containment and unable to grow in numbers and are limited in how they advance while the crows are free to grow in numbers and intelligence, which creates some nice tension.
