you should definitely spend some time optimising your settings for VR bro, once you get that sweetspot between performance and looks you ain't never going back
The profound impact of virtual reality in flight simulation has turned my dreams into reality. Sitting alone in the cockpit feels like an immense privilege. The ability to engage in dogfights, bombing missions, air-to-air refueling, and more is a privilege I deeply appreciate. We are truly experiencing a golden age of flight simulation.
I know it is really weird. I bought a Quest 3, and I was dogfight in IL-2 every day after work Pretty soon i started to have dreams about flying a plane in WW2 and it was horrifying. It is like those dreams when you are falling and wake up just before you hit the ground except in a plane
Dream setup 😂😂 when I get a place of my own I’m gonna build a crazy flight sim setup and do all the cool shit the military said I’ll never be able to do lmaoo
VTOL VR is a great example too, I probably enjoy it more than dcs because instead of using keybinds and hotas switches, you're actually reaching out in front of you and flipping switches.
@@ascenxt did you know you can use rudder pedals in VTOL VR? I find that using my pedals makes it a much better experience because the twist rudder was always an issue for me, twisting without intending to inducing rudder movement that is unwanted. The common control schemes make it easy to change to the different airframes easily.
Flying with VR is just unreal. If you like planes and your PC can run it, go get it ASAP. My first time in a Xwing cockpit and later that night a F14 made my childhood dream come true.

Now imagine 7 to 9 g turns, grey outs, and difficulty breathing while twisting your head to follow and maneuver in relation to the enemy... VR gives you a whole new perspective while also giving you a sense of astonishment for what real fighter pilots go through. My dad flies fighters and trains the Air Force in air combat, and flew f18s in the Marines. When I was younger, I remember he would fly for only a few hours, land, drive home, and then crash on the couch all sweaty and without even taking his flight suit off. Now I can understand why XD. It wasn't until recently that I truly came to understand how much physical stress fighter pilots are put under
It makes a huge difference in flying helos. Being able to sense the smallest movements in your peripheral vision makes hovering much easier. Great video.

I´ve been using VR for two years now, and I am not going back to head tracking.

My first time in a rolling scissors fight while in VR was exhilarating. Blew my mind it's so real. The sense of size and depth cannot be explained, only experienced.
VR takes some tweaking for every system configuration to get optimal performance. Running defaults is like dipping your toes in the water to test the temperature. As a real pilot, I started DCS and said "Oh, this is cool". The experience was totally different in VR. When I started DCS for the first time in VR and it dropped me in the cockpit of the MiG-21 BIS, I said "Whoa! Holy Frack!" I spent 15 minutes just looking around. Looking at the controls, studying the instruments and switches. Then when I started to taxi out for take off, I blurted out "Whoa!" again. While I knew I was sitting in my simpit and NOT moving. My eyes were feeding my brain very different information that I was moving and I could actually feel it. It was the strangest sensation I have ever experienced. It took about 30 minutes of flying (with NO aggressive control inputs) before I got over the vertigo inducing inputs to my brain. Now after hundreds of hours flying in VR, everything is instinct. VR technology is getting better and better. At some point, we won't be able to tell the difference between reality and VR. Next level is full motion simpit with VR....
@@SA80TAGE Important to note to get acclimated, it's important to remove the HMD AS SOON as you feel any discomfort. Then come back asap, once it has resided.
I will never, ever go back to 2D in DCS. I'd rather quit DCS altogether if for some reason VR won't be possible anymore in the future. That's how much VR has been a gamechanger IMO.
I went from vr back to display. My reverb g2 died, so i tried a LG C3 oled tv after flying in vr since 2018 nearly daily. It's 48" tv just in front of me with vrr and 120hz. Finally i was able to run dcs at max with 120fps. A couple days or weeks later i was got used to the head tracker and now at this point i'm not able to go back to vr tbh. I tried a couple weeks ago with a pico headset, but yeah not so nice and crispy. I run a 4090 btw. Sure the vr experience, the immersion is great. But once you get used to, it's not everything. i'll give a try in the future with pimax crystal or something..and a rtx 5090 😂
IL2 Flying Circus is a blast in VR. Just because the planes are slower. So if your budget and playing with a Quest 2 it is still great! Spotting enemies at distance is harder in VR.
Maybe it's because I'm using an OG vive but I feel spotting planes is easy because they take up a whole pixel at distance. Now IDing an aircraft is another thing entirely in VR.
@@SimpleBanana OG vive has the worst clarity of any HMD there is. You really should retire that thing and get a Quest 2, it's going to be mindblowing for you.
VR is getting so good these days. I'm just running a Quest 3 and it still looks fantastic. You do need some solid horsepower to run it, but the experience is so much better than monitors, IMO. I haven't used a monitor for sim racing or flight sims in over 6 years.

Give XR necksaver (or safer) a try it helps out massively as it provides a “snap” view to the sides so you won’t have to crank your neck as much or at all depending on how far you set the rotation
Oouhh a whole video to answer the question I asked under the last one! Awesome, thank you! Love the F-4 contetn, as from all "gotta go fast"-planes it's my favourite, looking forward to seeing more on it in the close future!
Man,I've been using VR for flight and racing sims for a fair few years now. Everyone I have let try it in either racing or flying settings is blown away by how it feels and even now I still sometimes find myself reaching out to flick a switch I can see, then having to remind myself that I am in my lounge in a seat haha.
@SA80TAGE last time i played it was only controllers. The controllers are your hands so it would be kinda difficult to drop the controllers to grab your HOTAS. The ingame hotas doesn't have that many buttons IIRC
While VR in DCS is demanding. There are ways to make the experience better. If you want to just try it out go grab a reverb G2 or quest2. With the implementation of dlss and FSR, while it does have its cons in VR, it definitely helps with experience if your PC isn’t top end. Also you can turn on motion reprojecetion or ASW in oculus. This helps lower the demand but not without its issues such as warping on rotors in rotary aircraft. But provides a smooth experience. If you are on the fence pick up a quest 2 they just dropped to 199? I think. If you don’t like it return it.
To help with tracking bandits in VR I found that I could fly with my chair upright but then I would lean back to track the bandit, then rock back up when looking forward. Allows a nice rolling motion of the neck while keeping the head supported.
I am on the fence to set up but the 3d virtual reality is really convincing . I ve watched most of your videos , retired now , love flying and ac, so this is something I m seriously looking into set up !! Thanks again for all your videos . I hope To be joint you in this space .WL
you won't regret it trust me, the vid footage doesn't quite convey it but you genuinely feel like you're in the cockpit..... the fov in recordings like this is also not representative of what you'll see yourself, on flat screens the view looks way more zoomed in than it actually is.
You won't regret it. The difference is night and day, and like GS said, you really can't capture it in a UA-cam video. You need to experience it. You'll be sold forever in the first 30 seconds.
Great video. Reminded me of my first VR flights. It truly is the way to fly DCS. I recently added a motion rig for further immersion. The fear is real! 😆
My fav way to introduce people to VR, is get them to do a cat shot off the carrier pull straight up, but look at the stick and get them to level out before stall, now look how high you are, gets them every time.
The refresh rate is definitely worse on our side, but I have played with VR before and it's amazing. I know what you mean about the rate drop and how it's not as bad when you are in it. Great idea and I could imagine myself getting it when I get set up just for fun. Sick video man, and it was hilarious when you thought you were going to hit the ground. You could here it in your voice. That was cool man.
I don't think I can ever go back from VR. The biggest drawback is the cost, but if you can afford the setup, it's well worth it. The depth perception it gives you is so good. Well worth it. Thanks for another great video. Cheers
I personally feel like dogfighting in vr is a lot easier. You can look around to search for the enemy in a was more intuitive way than with track ir. I always loose sight in normal 2D but in vr I can look at my speed in a split second and look back to the bandit very intuitively
Watching all of you DCS players playing the F-4 really make me hype for it, since F-4 will be the reason I get into DCS. I just hope I stick around to learn it fully lol *Nervous*
Finally a new vr video! Would love to see you eventually revisit VTOL VR, BD has put a bunch of work into the radar systems and EW stuff since the last time you played.
I moved to VR a couple of years ago and would never go back to a flat panel for flying. I started with a G2 and have been lucky enough to have upgraded to a Pimax this year. As you mentioned, once you are immersed, you can’t really tell the difference in visual quality, but there is a massive difference with immersive quality and feeling that you are really there!
I used my VR to practice my landings on msfs2020 when getting my PPL, my approaches when getting my instrument, and also flying the F-4 (mod) in DCS in VR was unreal. Special experience
I use VR for my GA flying (working on my instrument) and I also use a VR Hang Gliding simulator for students. It's hard to remember that you're sitting at your desk at home sometimes.
Very true what you say about your mind being fooled into thinking it is real. I remember one of the first times I flew a WW2 fighter in VR. Had a bandit on my 6 plinking at me and found myself trying to sink myself down into my seat to take advantage of my (non-existent) back seat armor.
Hey GS! I had the opportunity to sit in a f4e cockpit and can say with certainty, it is much more smaller and cramped then it looks, and I’m 5ft10in, I have huge respect to those pilots, compared to the f111 and f16 cockpits I’ve also sat it, the f4e felt small, but calming in a way. That’s why it’s my favorite plane by far! (And why I’m building a replica cockpit of it with real f4 cockpit panels lol)
I love the immersion that you get with VR. Have a Quest2 device and it works very well, even though it does not offer the best resolution. What I find difficult in DCS VR is that it is hard to spot your targets before they spot you and that there is no gradual zoom like you have in 2D mode. So you can only have a toggle to zoom all the way in while holding a button of back to normal view. This makes interacting with the cockpit controls harder as they get a bit fiddly. Flying around and lining up with the runway feels much more intuitive than with track-ir. Also approaching on the carrier gives that sudden rush of a very small deck coming at you very fast. Overall I don't want to go back to 2D, but there is still room for improvement/growth to make it more immersive. Have decided to not go for the F4 yet as I first want to understand the A-10 a lot better which gives you a bit more time to spot your targets and go at it tactically. Thanks for all your video's, I love the variety!
VR + Flight sim is the best feeling experience in gaming if one set aside the technical challenges. Precise flying is so much easier when you are in the cockpit in 3D. The only drawback in my opinion is reading small texts and that you need to map all commands to HOTAS as using the keyboard even for the least used commands is a mess.
My experience with VR was mixed, the heat and uncomfortable feeling of having something strapped to your face for an hour is noticeable, the thing that killed it for me is the ugly low textures of the trees and buildings, the trees are 2D models and move around depending on your view angle, its also difficult to spot other planes... In IL2 though it felt a bit better, but i still went back to headtracking eventually
I have my track IR in its box for months now. DCS is meant to be in VR, I just wish there was a better integration for VR controllers and hand tracking.
Flying with a screen, you have a flat projection of what you see on a screen in front of you. It occupies part of yor vision. With VR the aircraft is around you. Your whole vision is filled with the cockpit. If you can afford it, give it a try. I only fly in VR now.
Although I hope to upgrade in the relatively near future, I'm currently running an RTX 2060 Super and I still VASTLY prefer to fly in VR at stupidly reduced settings simply because of that feeling of actually being in the aircraft that you just can't get in 2D.
@@GrowlingSidewinder No doubt about it! Pardon my enthusiasm; VR was a must for me, and an intrinsic aspect of the experience when I started DCS. Take care! So excited for tomorrow!
Interesting to hear you say you find it harder to maintain visual - I found it the complete opposite moving to VR. Yes you have to move your head more but I can easily recall the position my head was in to look back and forth to relocate a target whereas I struggled with TrackIr as it would dart all over the place and was way more sensitive to slightest of movements (and external light!). Maybe I didn’t have trackir set up well but I also found with the slightly lower visual quality, targets were slightly bigger pixels in vr so again a little easier to spot (although I’m a Q3 user not Pimax Crystal). Just my take but interesting to hear you had the opposite.
It’s the only way to play a sim. DCS is incredible in VR & I’ll be surprised if you can go back to a flat screen after this. Though apparently it isn’t the best for contact creators.
While the pimax really is a fantastic headset, a lot of your viewers may find good luck with the HP Reverb g2. It's still a higher resoultion than what Valve offers (though not nearly as high as the pimax) but the pricepoint on it is fantastic. $600US new w/ controllers, but is sometimes on sale for half that. Works with everything steam related in my experience. Can even be upgraded to the vive grippy controllers and lighthouse tracking thingies.
The eye only sees high resolution in a small area. VR only needs to have high resolution where you are looking. I would like to see you dogfight with the MIG 17. The MIG 21 is a interceptor but not much of a dog fighter. The best it can do sneak up, shoot a missal, and run.
If you prefer 2D, don’t use TrackIR, but Tobii. I used first a long time, but it much less precise and versatile especially the lack of eye tracking. You can easily improve the crispness of your experience by choosing other settings especially the mirror sights. What about hand tracking to improve immersion? With Quest 3 out of the box or with the new Leap Motion Hyperion? Could be interesting. Thanx for your cool videos! I do watch a lot of them.
the first time i every flew vr was i think in il2 box, and that was easily one of the most transformative experiences of my life. DCS is a little too much for my laptop as is, and especially in VR. i hope i come into a comfy set and rig that can run it, maybe the quest 3 or something.
Dogfighting in VR is exhausting. I’m an army vet, always dreamed of being a fighter pilot but my eyes probably wouldn’t let me. Anyways it made me appreciate how much of a work out dogfighting is for a true fighter pilot.
I was talking to a guy who actually flew the F-4 the other day and he got me interested in trying it in DCS and then you came out with this video. Talk about timing! 😊 So my question is, can you outfit this model with modern ordinance and fly it in a current time scenario? The radar will be a very limiting factor, but at least you would have modern missile technology.

I just hope I stick around to learn it fully lol
*Nervous*
Finally a new vr video! Would love to see you eventually revisit VTOL VR, BD has put a bunch of work into the radar systems and EW stuff since the last time you played.
I moved to VR a couple of years ago and would never go back to a flat panel for flying. I started with a G2 and have been lucky enough to have upgraded to a Pimax this year. As you mentioned, once you are immersed, you can’t really tell the difference in visual quality, but there is a massive difference with immersive quality and feeling that you are really there!
I had the G2 for a while. Is the Pimax a significant upgrade?
😎👍VR! I will never be able to play DCS on a Monitor again.
At 6:36 "i havent noticed a performance issue with the f4" -really good dcs player that has an op pc.
I used my VR to practice my landings on msfs2020 when getting my PPL, my approaches when getting my instrument, and also flying the F-4 (mod) in DCS in VR was unreal. Special experience
I also play DCS in VR. It really is something else that I never would get with Track IR
I use VR for my GA flying (working on my instrument) and I also use a VR Hang Gliding simulator for students. It's hard to remember that you're sitting at your desk at home sometimes.
It's awesome how you demonstrated how challenging it is to dog fight in VR. That's me playing dcs without vr. I struggle to dog fight without it 😂
Very true what you say about your mind being fooled into thinking it is real.
Well. VR certainly added to your workload. I don't think I could stand to wear VR gear for long, so good on ya for an honest test.
Waiting for that elusive gun kill and a napalm strike, GS.
Sad that my dad isn't around anymore to see this. He'd have loved to watch it.
F4 Phantom vs F5 tiger would be a good fight to see.
Would be cool flying an F-111 in TFR mode on a bombing run in VR
Just saw UA-cam unsubscribed me from your channel, I’ve resubscribed
I appreciate you
Sexy aircraft. On Forrestal I loved the extend on the cat, bridle launched aircraft. Go VMF 115!
It's been mind-bggling to me for years now that GS doesn't commonly play in VR. The immersion (especially with his playstyle) is unparalleled.
Worse video quality for youtube videos.
Ive learned that without the right HOTAS the 2 seater planes are not the way to go.
Cant wait to see more content creators use the F4.
a lot of content creators already have, just look up the videos
❤❤❤nice job you are are flying ✈ the heck out of that F-4 the fly by kick but ❤❤❤ great video ❤
Sounds like you just need a better PC and a modern HMD. No HMD made after the first gen will get hot on your face.
Speed and Angels there between you and that friendly F-4
Didn't realise f4 is a jolly happy airplane? Its back end is laughing at everything and everyone! 😀
I have my track IR in its box for months now. DCS is meant to be in VR, I just wish there was a better integration for VR controllers and hand tracking.
Can you imagine cranking your neck like that while actually pulling the Gs? The guys who fly fighter aircraft are amazing!
Dogfighting may be harder in VR, but it's WAY more fun if you ask me, and your spatial awareness will be so much better.
I'm waiting to see a gun kill with the F4.
If you are of an advanced age like myself. I highly recommend a standing desk. Really helps with the neck movement.
Makes it tough to use rudder pedals, though.
@RJ-kr4bs I use twist stick. But yes you are correct.
Flying with a screen, you have a flat projection of what you see on a screen in front of you. It occupies part of yor vision. With VR the aircraft is around you. Your whole vision is filled with the cockpit. If you can afford it, give it a try. I only fly in VR now.
Dat plane in dat camo, is wonderful
It's about time you got back in VR
VR being harder and more immersive really makes the wins more satisfying.
To fix VR resolution I just turned the res. of cockpit displays in settings up.
Fantastic video! Could you please review some other DCS modules in VR like the F18 or F16 or maybe try out some mods in dcs like the F22 or the Su-30?
Although I hope to upgrade in the relatively near future, I'm currently running an RTX 2060 Super and I still VASTLY prefer to fly in VR at stupidly reduced settings simply because of that feeling of actually being in the aircraft that you just can't get in 2D.
I got into VR specifically for DCS helicopters.
Took me _way_ to long to figure out what "h_ee_plur" was. Anyway here for the F4 fights; Let's go!!
It seems that GS had a bit of a taste on what a real pilot feel under that type of situations.
Late to this party but always love the VR videos. It’s really awesome to hear you fighting hard to win. Personally, the res drop doesn’t bother me.
Genuinely can't imagine just sitting on a free Pimax Crystal, man. Crazy! I guess you picked a great time to showcase it lol.
Ya I mean just been super busy haven’t had time to set it up, until now. Glad I did, it’s super cool.
I fly the Cessna 172 in VR all the time. Once, I set my coffee cup on the airplane's dash.
DCS in VR if real fun. I haven't used had tracking, but I assume VR is way better.
@10:00, I mentally pulled up 3 seconds before you did. I was sure you were packing it in.
Now all you need is a 6DOF motion simulator.
Amazing demo. I would live to see you to your PvP with VR. Classic F-16 vs. Mirage.
Pimax Crystal is $1700, what a deal to get that sent over. Time for your PC sponsor to step up and send a rig to max it out!
might should get back into sim flying. this VR stuff looks fun :)
Once you go VR, you won't go back.
the first time i every flew vr was i think in il2 box, and that was easily one of the most transformative experiences of my life. DCS is a little too much for my laptop as is, and especially in VR. i hope i come into a comfy set and rig that can run it, maybe the quest 3 or something.
You should try IL2 Surmovik in VR. Absolutely stunning!
Dogfighting in VR is exhausting. I’m an army vet, always dreamed of being a fighter pilot but my eyes probably wouldn’t let me. Anyways it made me appreciate how much of a work out dogfighting is for a true fighter pilot.
These could use an overhaul of the sound I reckon. The J-79 engines have distinctive sounds to them that are all missing in this simulation.
You do so good in the Vertical fight with the F-4
I was talking to a guy who actually flew the F-4 the other day and he got me interested in trying it in DCS and then you came out with this video. Talk about timing! 😊
So my question is, can you outfit this model with modern ordinance and fly it in a current time scenario? The radar will be a very limiting factor, but at least you would have modern missile technology.
Loving the content mate, keep it up. Would love to see you jump into some VR WW2 missions? Been too long, your WW1 one were awesome.
LOL ya a little scary!!! Pulling up! Good mission run, considering it's a F-4!
