@@GangsterFrankensteinComputer either the pointer or an axis/key you set in settings. The best way to start is to use an xbox controller or mouse and keyboard if you don't have one, and eventually to get a cheap throttle and stick.
It's kind of crazy how much easier it gets with a throttle and stick. I used mouse and keyboard for two years until I saved up for a warthog hotas, and it felt like everything as actually there to help you use the plane and not fight you.
If you're super into it but cant get a hotas(throttle and stick), try with mouse and keyboard and just take breaks when you get frustrated. If you don't care that much it might not be worth your time until you get a joystick at least

It doesn't even matter how hard you try

Congrats Habie!!! You deserve it. You are the only content creator I know so far that consistently wishes his viewers a good day and that "something good happens" to them. I started watching your channel in the middle of the pandemic (during some of the worst months as far as illness). I'm an ER doc in FL who also had to deal with some developmental difficulties with my son (he's gotten over most of them, thank G), and my wife coming down with a rare neurologic disorder. So, yeah, it has been a rough 2-3 yrs.
I've looked forward to your vids weekly and have found them all super entertaining. Heck, it's because of you that I started playing Onward and Saints & Sinners (like everyday for 1 yr). Now I still play Onward, not casually anymore, but on a League Team. It is my way of dealing with a lot of stress/PTSD/anxiety and insomnia. Your videos are more therapeutic than you think. Thanks for everything you do (for fun, I know) and connecting with so many strangers. You deserver all the credit your are receiving.
If ever you are on an Onward pub lobby and you see me (KidKneePNCH), holler back. Don't be surprised if I get star struck and geek out a bit.

Habie, get yourself a HOTAS and a throttle. Doesn't have to be the most expensive of either, but you need it. 100% need it. You can also use head tracking instead of VR, which many people prefer, and will help performance a ton, otherwise I'd say its time to upgrade, because you do get performance issues in other games too ya know O:)
But seriously, get a hotas and a throttle. Especially hotas. you have to. No option there, you can't really get the experience otherwise.
Also, get someone to train you, there's a ton of creators nowadays who tend to do this for other creators, it WILL be worth it, you'll come out of it thanking yourself tenfold for the experience

To be fair, old aircraft like the P-51 are a bit iffy to start up and especially to take off.
You need a lot of rudder input and feel for the aircraft to successfully take off. A jet tainer like the LZ-39, MB-339 or C-101 is a lot easier to start up and fly around in
Add to that, DCS is nearly unplayable without at least a flight stick. So props to you for giving it a go!

Great video yet again. DCS is a game I have a love hate relationship with, but trying to fly a DCS plane in VR using motion controls is cursed.
Please, try this again one day with a joystick and throttle (Hotas) borrow one or buy one. Then take the time to set the controls properly.
Also, you CAN fly the F14 Tomcat as you can trial any of the modules for 2 weeks.
If I were to recommended you a follow up video to this one, it would involve the following.
    * Use A joystick or Hotas
    * Get a trial for the F14 and the supercarrier.
(Or alternatively get the proper Mustang with guns, + the Normandy Map)
    * Team up with a DCS pro to show you the ropes.
    * Optimise your graphics settings using OpenXR. (There are people who can help you with this myself included)
    * Profit

The startup procedure is relatively simple, though not the simplest out there even for warbirds, the take off is one of the easier ones for the warbirds and the landings - while more difficult than the jets, of course, aren't bad at all. Still easier for me than Bf-109. ;)
The challenging part is the engine management if you really want to push it without blowing it. Other than that it's a real joy to just fly around.
The thing is... I think he has no rudder pedals? You are going to have a VERY hard time with warbirds without the rudder pedals.

You can grab the throttle in VR like you do with the joystick and I'd recommend binding the x-axis of the "stick" control (the hand that is holding the stick) for the Mustang, the engine makes the plane roll and yaw a little bit (mostly on takeoff).

One does not simply just play DCS. It is a past time that requires patience, enthusiasm and dedication purely devoted to learning a single plane firstly. The flying comes after. Do not fret, as there are many friendly pilots in the "flying/piloting" community, both DCS and otherwise, that are always eager to help guide a new gamer at trying to find its feathers and become airborne to experience the freedom and joy that is flying, and ultimately in the end, the flight combat that DCS has to offer. Much love for trying it though, would love to see you get proficient at it.

Keep doin you and you'll shoot past a million next year no problem! Also if you do want to at least fly in DCS for more than a few seconds shoot me a message and I can give you a crash course if you want the help of some random internet stranger. Even if its just to be able to take off and land alive and nothing else, I gotchu. I've taught quite a few people in pretty much all of the DCS aircraft from the F16 to A10, its just something that I enjoy so much and probably wont get close to in real life. Just getting your license is like $10k-$15k normally. These sims allow me to escape a bit as you say, and forget the soul sucking that can be life. End rant, my bad I just thought it might give me an extra percent chance of you taking me on my offer if I show how much of a nut for this stuff I am. Kinda counterinuitive now that I really think about that.

I know imma seem like a nerd but I wanted to explain what was happening on take off.
As you could probably tell when you started to take off you began rolling to the left, this is the consequence of torque. Torque is created because your propeller is moving in a given direction (in this case left) this happens because the power of the engine is so strong is literally moves your plane, this is also because you have little lift and are mainly flying on your engine, as you could probably notice it was not happening in flight due to your high lift. To counter this you need to add a little bit a right aileron (right roll) and some right rudder (right yaw) to keep on the runway, then just add as much as needed while you ascend. Also don't be so hard on the elevator upon take off, it is a tail dragger so push the nose forward a little bit till it is level wit the horizon, and then add some up elevator (up pitch) to slowly and gracefully rise into the air.
    Hope this helps!!!

real smoothbrain moment - every engine needs fuel, ignition, and rotation. First, turn on the battery/power, cause you'll need that. Turn on all the switches and knobs and levers that relate to fuel, mixture to rich, push the primer a few times, etc. That's step 1. Step 2 is to find the ignition key/switch and turn that one. It's usually called "magneto" in piston aircraft; if it gives you a choice between 1 and 2 pick 2. Step 3 is to find the button/key/switch that spins the engine up. If the engine is spinning, it's receiving fuel, and that fuel is being lit, the engine should light.
That procedure is about 80-100% of every engine start procedure you'll find on a fully modelled aircraft. A lot of startup procedures have a bunch of other steps but they mostly approximate to "Turn all the systems on" which is much less difficult for most aircraft.

If you wanted to get back into DCS... something that would help hugely is using a controller and keyboard (or a hotas if you are interested in spending a bunch of money). Trying to operate the throttle/flaps/landing gear with the motion controller is just going to be overload since you can't do it by feel and you really need to be able to devote much of your attention to what's outside the plane or to watch your gauges as you change throttle to see what it's doing to your manifold pressure.
While it is nice that they have workable buttons, dials, and switchea in the cockpits, setting up keyboard controls for all the things you'll only use sparingly is well worth the loss in immersion you get from operating the controls "manually" with the VR pointer. And having a button on a controller (or a throttle hotas) controlling throttle means you can keep your eyes on the runway, or on your gauges where you need them as you are landing (as well as controlling your flaps). What VR can't do that is kind of necessary for the most frequently used of the in-cockpit controls in this game (and in real life) is let you adjust controls by feel rather than having to look down at them.
