Is THIS how you play 8-ball??..... APA 8-Ball League Match SL-7 vs SL-6

  • Guys, I'm very excited about the camera upgrade..... but this match here was just part of the learning curve! The white balance and color are all off, but I've already corrected it for ones going forward! Didn't want to not share a match anyway, so here you go. Focus on this one is essentially decision making, tell me what you think!

I really appreciate the lines and the explaining of the shots. I know that takes time and you are killing it. Any chance you might talk more about the English you use on some of the shots? Keep up the the great work.

🙏🏼 thank you for the kind comments, Chris!
I think it was you who asked this before in another video, and I gotta say, I think about it every time I’m spending time drawing the lines.
It may seem like I’m not bringing up the english (sidespin) very often, which is mainly because 1. I don’t use a Ton of it, and 2. It’s not super important for the shot.
When it IS important, I do make sure to draw a small arrow off of the rail where the spin takes effect (see 24:15 of this video), showing if I was using inside/outside spin.
I am going to make a video on when you should START considering using English soon! Thank you for the kind words! Next video quality is the Next Chapter for the channel 👊🏼👊🏼👊🏼

Your new camera setup is looking good, the angle is also great! I've been watching your channel since the beginning and like what I see here. Your very informative and very articulate as well. I wish I could comentate on my APA videos but I have a congestion problem that would make it very hard for me to speak without having to clear my voice every few minutes or so lol. Either way, I'll keep watching and learning from you. I am a much lower end player, only an SL4 but getting better with time. Keep up the great work my friend!

Honestly, I was just starting on the next video, where I actually figured out how to setup the brightness and color, etc… and it looks AMAZING compared to this! I can’t believe I thought this looked really good at first 😂😂 I hope you like the next one 👊🏼
I am very glad that my videos are hitting well for you!! Honestly, I know I am not a Fargo 700, and I personally don’t think I’m qualified to give much advice for SL-7’s… but my target really for the pointers I give, are SL-4ish.
As you progress in the game, the SL-4 is such a fun part of the journey. There are so many things that can *click* and completely change your game… which only adds to the enjoyment of your competition. I’m just trying to add my 2 cents into those *clicks* while we try and learn from other amateurs mistakes!
Please, if there is anything I could add/change, let me know! But keep at the game! The path from SL-4 to SL-6 is right in front of you 🫡

@@drewvonporte That is very good advice Drew! I definately look forward to your future advice and expertise.
As far as the camera, I use a slightly older flagship Android phone with the Open Camera app and it has been working for me. I have a much more versatile Canon T7i digital SLR camera but I find it is not a practical solution for me since It's clunky and much harder to get in a good position as the tripod only extends about 6 feet high (which is not ideal if you want to avoid people walking in front of the shot).
I like having to option to put my smartphone on another high object such as an existing shelf, table or coin machine, etc. Then extend the height further by placing it on my lightweight, smaller selfie travel tripod. It's very convienent to bring to the matches since it is so small and light that fits perfectly in an extension slot in my pool bag. It is shaped the size of an extension when collapsed so it's a perfect fit. Got to love Amazon :)
I am fairly new to filming my APA matches and related procedures and was hoping to get some input on how you set up your equipment and maybe some pointers on your editing process. I realize this is not the forum for longer conversations so if you have a short answer, that would be fine otherwise we could correspond via email if you like.

Is accidentally touching a ball legal in your league (just putting it back)? I've seen it the second time in your videos and for us (Europe) that would be a foul with ball in hand for the opponent. For low levels you could let it go, but at 7 vs 6 it skills it would be no question.

    • @drewvonporte
      @drewvonporte  3 місяці тому +1

Yeah it’s what we call “cue ball fouls only”. Our league (APA) rules state that an attempt MUST be made to return the object ball back to it’s original position, determined by the opponent (the one who didn’t touch the ball).
APA is the amateur of amateur leagues. Very easygoing and accommodating to newer players and those still learning.

I played a tournament in Lansing Mi, Four days and around 2500 players. It was a VNEA. I ended up in 8'th. The thing about that tournament though is that every single one of those 2500 players were all crazy good. I didn't see a single person who wouldn't be a 7 in APA. There were 100 tables going from 7 AM to about 1 AM for 4 days and I would bet than less than 20 games of the Thousands that were played got to the 2nd shot for any given player in any given game. Every game was either a break and run or the Second player ran out. It was a don't miss situation because every single kick-at-the-can was the only one you were getting. What a tournament!

the 1st rack @8:14 - i might have taken the 8 to the side pocket instead of the corner. smaller window to make it, but closer shot. the table is probably perfectly level and the cloth looks in great shape, so a soft shot in the side pocket should roll true.

It's definitely nice to get in a shut out right after a bad week 😎 Great match!
You mentioned something about your break. Something I can see from yours that will give you both better control of the stroke and the cue ball would be to move your grip hand forward. We usually can determine (at least I do) preferable grip position by getting our forearm and upper arm to be at a 90 degree angle to each other at the point of contact with the cue ball, something we can use practice strokes to judge. This is because that position is at the peak of our acceleration during our forward swing, when our hand is right in line with our hip, and it gives us optimal contact with the cue ball.
You appear to break in a manner similar to myself, by dropping the elbow on the forward stroke. This changes things up, because dropping the elbow causes contact with the cue ball to happen sooner than it normally would in a pendulum stroke. When your hand is towards the back of the cue, you haven't yet reached your peak forward acceleration point when you strike the cue ball. Moving it a bit forward to the point where your hand is right by your hip at cue ball contact will give you a better break shot, along with the stroke being easier to control because of your hand being in a more forward position.
