  • 80 years ago this year the Allies landed the largest modern assault force on to Nazi-occupied Europe, this story is only a tiny slice of the bigger picture, but it follows Major (later Major General) Allan ‘Tony’ Younger DSO, OBE, as he goes from training to assaulting the beaches at Normandy. Terrific video - great to see our history laid out so well.
I've served in 2 AES at Iserlohn plus 26 CAES (later reverting to 26 AES), 31 AES and 77 AES at Munsterlager - I also have the rather rare distinction of being one of the very few people lucky enough to have been a crew member and/or commanded EVERY type of Armoured Engineer vehicle in service between 1971 and 1993 - including the Centurion AVRE (165mm AND 105mm) + ARK + CAMP (Centurion Ark Mobile Pier) + Bridgelayer Plus Chieftain AVLB + CHAVRE (Chieftain AVRE) + Ardvark Flail vehicle. I've ommitted the CET as these weren't specific to Armoured Engineer units.
My one gripe is to do with one of the graphics where the American 1st and 4th divisions are placed incorrectly. Also, Omaha beach was assaulted by two divisions simultaneously - 1st and 29th.

When did the Royal Engineers take the Cavalry titles?
From companies and platoons to Squadrons and Troops.
Or rather when did they completely drop the infantry terms.
You use both in this video.
