Britain's Secret Defences - an author talk at the Royal Engineers Museum RE-Read event 2024

Andrew Chatterton talking about his gripping book “Britain’s Secret Defences: Civilian saboteurs, spies and assassins during the Second World War”. The narrative surrounding Britain’s anti-invasion forces has often centred on ‘Dad’s Army’-like characters running around with pitchforks, on unpreparedness and sense of inevitability of invasion and defeat. The truth, however, is very different. Fu...

Sean Scullion giving a presentation of his exciting new book, “Churchill’s Spaniards”. Serving as a Lt.Col in the Royal Engineers in addition to being raised in Fraco’s Spain, Sean is uniquely placed to examine the role of Spanish Republican volunteers during the Second World War. Churchill's Spaniards is not the story of the Spanish Civil War, nor the equally well-known one of the Internationa...

Operation Freshman was the codename given to a British airborne operation conducted in November 1942 during World War II. It was the first British airborne operation conducted using Airspeed Horsa gliders, and its target was the Vemork Norsk Hydro hydrogen electrolysis plant in Telemark, Norway which produced heavy water as a byproduct. One of the key aims of Dr Tocher's book project has been t...

Phenomenal insights.
When did the Royal Engineers take the Cavalry titles? From companies and platoons to Squadrons and Troops. Or rather when did they completely drop the infantry terms. You use both in this video.
Thanks for this interesting video.
Thanks so much.
Terrific video - great to see our history laid out so well. I've served in 2 AES at Iserlohn plus 26 CAES (later reverting to 26 AES), 31 AES and 77 AES at Munsterlager - I also have the rather rare distinction of being one of the very few people lucky enough to have been a crew member and/or commanded EVERY type of Armoured Engineer vehicle in service between 1971 and 1993 - including the Centurion AVRE (165mm AND 105mm) + ARK + CAMP (Centurion Ark Mobile Pier) + Bridgelayer Plus Chieftain AVLB + CHAVRE (Chieftain AVRE) + Ardvark Flail vehicle. I've ommitted the CET as these weren't specific to Armoured Engineer units. My one gripe is to do with one of the graphics where the American 1st and 4th divisions are placed incorrectly. Also, Omaha beach was assaulted by two divisions simultaneously - 1st and 29th.
Dieppe sources are out of date .. tanks did get off the beach
He does say a few got off the beaches.
Thank you. Good story. I was TF RNZE for 12 years.

Gentlemen, soldier
Most interesting, thank you to all💜
Loved this demo and I'd love to join a Lindy Hop class and . . . . I live in Maidstone! How do I get in touch?
Thank you so much for this informative video. Now I have a more clear idea of how my German relatives corresponded to each other during World War 2.
A wonderful historical collection, a revisit is long overdue
Thanks Jim!
Sehr schön! Grüße aus Deutschland! ;)
0.5 or 0.7 inch wire! That can't be right surely. That's half an inch or seven tenths of an inch. Do they mean millimetres? That would make more sense.
It was actually .05”, later .07”wire.
That makes sense.@@AlecBeanse
Wow guncotton blew up 75 meters high, Amazing considering the small size of the war head
well done steve and vic great vid
Love the fox and Bird toy
really interesting, thankyou
Wonderful, even I can learn how to do that. And I've got three left feet, none of which belongs too me.
Great to hear you've enjoyed it. They're good teachers!
Thankyou - watched this at an event in Gravesend, but was too quick to see what was happening - this is slow enough for me to keep up with.
You're welcome! We're glad it has been useful.
Fascinating stuff! I always thought guided torpedoes only came about in the 1940s.
