OH FUCK. This suddenly reminded me of a point I forgot! Mages are said to be able to change eye colors, and it's apparently one of the earliest signs of magic! It wouldn't be a stretch to imagine this applies to hair as well. :D
I might be in the minority here, but I really loved the look of the elves in DA2. They look so distinctly non-human and it was a breath of fresh air to see.
Fun fact the glowing eye thing means the Elves have something called "tapetum lucidum" which is a reflective layer which bounces back light through the retina a second time so they can see better.
this is pretty interesting, but just a note on the different skin colours, arent most of the people we've seen from tevinter a bit darker skinned? like not all of them, but a decent number use the darker skin tones
Yeah, a friend of mine ran into a similar situation when he made the human noble look as close to him as possible. It did make for an amusing commentary on the prologue, though!
DarkKing009 I’d like to think Elenor gave the how I met your mother explanation. “So when I pregnant with you I drank white milk, and when I was pregnant with you I drank chocolate milk!”
This is helpful! Turns out, I did better with my first Origins character (a Human Mage) than I thought. First off, while I gave Amell a slightly Antivan-looking skin tone, it was ambiguous enough to go either way. Also, he had deep auburn hair (a shade darker than Leliana's) and a nice goatee. But otherwise, his facial features were strong and prominent...just like Hawke's default form. He actually looked like he could be related to the vanilla Hawke, completely accidentally. Secondly, his name was Kieran. Just because I always liked that name. When Morrigan named her son in Inquisition, you can imagine my fannish "NO one's gonna believe this!" glee.
How old the Warden is I've always thought differed depending on which of the possible Wardens s/he is: Human Noble - Early-mid 20s (maybe 22 or 23). Fergus seemed about 28 or 29 to me. Human & Elf Mages - Late teens (maybe 19) City Elf - Late teens-early 20s (maybe 19 or 20) Dalish Elf - Early 20s (maybe 21) Dwarf Commoner - Late teens-early 20s (maybe 19 or 20). Rica seemed in her mid 20's to me. Dwarf Noble - Mid 20s My canon Warden is an Aeducan and I've had it in my head for a while that he starts DA:O at 26. It's may entirely be me, but Trian seemed to be closing on 30 by the start of the Origin and Bhelen was about 22-24. PS - great video as usual.
On skintones, I vaguely recall reading somewhere that really dark skin (black people) originate from the Donarks, but have substantial population in Rivain, and from there migrating to other regions. Fenris's eyebrows seem to indicate he may not have had naturally white hair. His sister didn't.
The gam devs/ Fenris creator stated he had natural white hair witch dark eyebrows. Dark eyebrows/light hair is natural and common in places like Norway
Typically I'm all for "playing by the rules" but I'm also a WOC, so I tend to make my DA characters darker in general. Not to say I haven't made lighter characters, but at the very least my initial playthrough is always my "me if I was in DA."
In DA2 you save a half elf who is a young boy dreamer and struggles with his magic. He doesn't look human because he has thinner features like the elves and pointed ears though smaller. his mom was elven and father a human from antiva. unlike Alistair in DAO who is half elf and looks completely human. I believe Bioware made this clarification when DAI was comming out.
She is related! I did say that none of the relatives are seen 'in the flesh' ;D But really, I thought it wasn't worth bringing up here, as A.) Wanted it to be No Spoilers, and Shale's identity is sort of a spoiler and B.) We don't actually see what her Dwarf form looks like, so it doesn't really effect how you would build a character. Also, fun facts: You can talk to Valta about why house Cadash got booted to the surface, and she replies that they broke some rule and tried to find a Golem...
Yes. The more different they look the better. I say make them short like origins and even more alien looking than da2. They're a whole different race, they should look like it.
I have just discovered your channel and am binge watching several of your, very good, videos. Thank you very much for putting all these together for a game series that I very much enjoy.
I love the lore in these games and I have tried to read all the codex entries between each game but haven't gotten to it yet. Now I manage to find new stuff thanks to you and god am I entertained by every single video you do, be it codex, discussion, podcast or anything. Great work =]
While playing Dragon Age 2 again I found it interesting how Fenris has more human eyes yet still hold true to the large elven eyes. And Merrill having more cat like eyes. I find that a nice detail.
Having to use mods to give my DA:I Dwarves some good orange/red hair tho. Or, you know, give anyone actual black hair. Seriously who decided "hey lets have an RGB slider for eye color but NOT hair color!"????
There is a half elf in Dragon Age 2, mother was Dalish and father was Antivan merchant. He was a mage as he is known as a dreamer. I didn't see any comments about that and I know I'm two years late.
I'm another two years late but if you're still curious: feynriel, the half elf dreamer, was stated to be a bit of a mistake and it shouldn't affect canon I guess
great video! i absolutely love making my characters' appearances fit with canon context so this was really fun and informative for me. one thing i did think of when you mentioned the potential relatives of your warden/hawke/quizzy was kieran, just because my canon warden was a darker-skinned elf and seeing his child as a pale and seemingly human boy was always kind of funny to me. just like with hawke's cousin. (and with the human noble origin -- having a darker skinned warden was REALLY weird with all the family member npcs lmao)
One thing I dislike about Elves in DA:I is that they are so skinny. A bit more slender then humans is fine but it just looks almost retarded and out of proportion with the head size. Also, I hope that they add more hair styles and the ability to change up how muscular and fit you are along with body tattoos. Some things I kinda miss
great video but uhh... you are incorrect about everywhere in thedas being "pasty white" except rivain, antiva and south ferelden. mike laidlaw said (in the dawn of the seeker commentary) that people from nevarra and other countries that direction closer to the equator have darker skin too.
lor Perhaps he said that- but we haven't really seen that? A large majority of the people we have seen from the Anderfels, Tevinter, and Nevarra have been white. Rivain and Antiva have been the only constant non-white characters. Also, do we know where the equator is in Thedas? It wouldn't be in the middle of the map, as that would make Par Vollen cold, and it's not.
Considering that just north of Anderfels, and on Seheron, there starts jungle, I'd expect the Equator to be only a little bit north of the northern end of the map, personally. Anyway, we know Anders' father came from Anderfels - hence the name, which is really just a nickname (we don't know his actual birth name). And Anders looks rather pale. Granted, his mother was probably Fereldan, but he doesn't even have a *hint* of dark skin tone. As for Nevarra, we have Cassandra as the only (I think) example, who also looks rather 'standard white'.
@@NovaHessia I was super disappointed by Cassandra (also she looked a bit browner, compareable to a southern Italian in Dragon Age 2 - Inquisition really fucked up her appearance - facial structure and beyond) for this reason. I always imagined Nevarrans as ordinarily brownish, like slightly darker than the Rivani. Idk why Inquisition made her so pale.
I favour the dalish (cause I used TT a an elf ranger), but I love the backgrounds in Origins and just finished a play through with an elven mage (who loathed the circle)
My Mahariel is literally a drow ranger with mods. He had blue hair, night blue skin, bright purple eyes and white vallaslin and he looked weird like yeah he's handsome but he looks like an alien 25/8 so when Fenris said "my tattoos might look weird to you" I was like wait until Anders calls his good old warden commander to Kirkwall lol
I kinda liked the Qunari designs in both Dragon Age 2 and Inquisition because they look unique from the other races with their grey/brown/yellow metallic skin, their giant stature and horns. I never really brought how the Qunari looked in Origins since they’re just giant humans without the horns. It’s described in the lore that a Qunari born without horns is signified to have a great destiny which is rare in Qunari society. Sometimes it’s best for a non human race to look completely weird or alien looking to make them stand out. As for the Elves, I liked how they looked in both Origins and Inquisition. Dragon Age 2 made them look like the Na’vi from Avatar.
I like to imagine Surana as the mage elf from the concept art, except I make her hair black implying it becomes gray later on in life. Tabris imo has a hair color between red and brown and literally any skintone you like And Aeducans just look really cool blonde Cousland is just funny if you play with darker skintone Also I can't imagine a Brosca without red hair Any other Wardens I just do whatevz
Loved the vid. I can spend hours in character creation rooms for various games. City of heroes still ranks as my favorite one, even though the game is defunct now. I have seen some absolutely gorgeous mods for da orgins were you can look like a fasion model. Im jealous. :p
Very much liked this video. I had always taken Iron Bull as a sign that oversized horns showed strength but now I'll see it differently. Also I think I've followed the rule on Dwarven tattoos completely on accident, nice to know my instinct on that was right!
Half-elves not having any elven features has GOT to be because of Alistair's story in Origins. Can't think of any other reason to deny us pointy-eared dwarves!
Soooo I made a qunari without horns bc the hair with horns glitches buuuut the one without does a little as well at least when moving in game. In Cutscenes it’s normal so now I’m looking at her like Ariana Grande does photos lol She is really pretty there’s a video that helps you make a pretty qunari. I gave her light blonde, hair freckles, and aquaish blue eyes with tints of green in the center. I tried a color similar to Sten but it wasn’t right
I had fun with my character that they’re kids connected physically. My Cousland looks like a regular human brown eyes brown hair round eyes. Hawk has brown hair blue eyes slightly slanted. Inquisitor is an elf with slanted eyes, brown around the pupil blue on the outside and blonde hair. Guess what’ll happen next? If there theee more games. Blond hair green eyes, blond hair grey eyes, then red hair mix- if I can.
Yeah...that was one reason I never really liked playing the Human Noble in DA:O. The fact that NONE of my family looked anything like me took me right out of the game, right at the start
I was hoping you'd talk about the cannon classes for the characters in lore like Hawke being a mage or the Hero of Fereldan being a female elf warrior. I wanna know what the cannon class for the Inquisitor is in a default timeline.
I generally have an idea on my head that I want as a design..... then I make a way for that character to exist in that world. Like.... X migrated to Y about Z years ago.... or Person A is adopted or Person B sired a child with another person but raised them because execution//death in childbirth.....OR may be mixed with ?.
Ooooooh I like lore stuff, I think most of what you said is cannon but I like to think based on codex, story, context etc that for example hawke is actually 29 in the beginning of the game since in legacy it said that Malcolm went to help the warden with corypheus 30 years ago and he said the baby when referring to leandra so I guess hawke was still in the womb, like you said the warden was probably 20 years old in the beginning of origins but like most people know, timelines don’t add up between awakening (or witch hunt In my case) and 2 bc of anders and actually never mind that, I know that it’s not canon but I like to think dao actually happened in 9.18 of the dragon instead of 9.30 bc it had to be at least 2y to do everything including the dlc in dao no way it happened in a year and finally the inquisitor i like to think is 25 in the beginning of inquisition just because
I have exactly 2 elves with white hair. One I was trying to get a more albino look who would probably have brown hair otherwise so I'm not sure she counts.
At least from what we have seen, geographical locations for elven skin colors match that of humans (Does that make sense? Haha- I mean that both Humans and elves from Rivain would have dark skin). As for a dark olive skin color- I would guess Antiva, similar to Zevran. Ferelden (Vaea) and Tevinter (Fenris) also have produced elves with darker skin tones. Hope that helps!
Ghil Dirthalen If you think about it that does make sense! Because since the clan your elf is from is in the Free Marches, and the Free Marches is kinda sandwiched by all continents you mentioned,so it would be reasonable if there was some mixed skin tones and dark skin tones within the elven clan that your inquisator is from! Thanks for the help!
Regarding skin colours: I think the northern counteies in general tend to be darker. Tevinter seem to have more dark skinned people on average. Also then prince of DLC I mean the prince of Starkhaven has dark skin. If Fenris is from Seheron the people there might have similar skintones to south asians. Ftr, I don't see Varania's appearance as canon because they basically took a generic elf model likely because of time constraints. I also think Fenris in game has lighter skin because he is a cave dweller who doesn't touch grass while in Kirkwall and only goes out when Hawke calls for an adventure (he is in hiding for the majority of the game after all - prove me wrong).
So you're saying me wanting to add a little spunk to my female lavelanna by giving her Violet eyes is natural? I just had head canon that my lavelanna was messing with a experimental spell an escaped apostate told her about and a side affect was a change in eye color. Doesn't make much sense, but at least I tried.
What happens in the vallaslin scene in DAI if you romance Solas but don't have vallaslin on your character design...? I can't remember if it's even possible to have an elf without vallaslin though. Like, what happens????
It is still not lore breaking. (Especially since the free marches are ... free. Do what you want.) We just don't know the meaning of human tattoos while elven and dwarven tattoos are completely covered by lore.
Someone please correct me but isn't it a bit weird that Hawke is 25 at the start of the game and still not married, only after 7 years or so if he/she romances someone? The setting of Dragon Age is quite Medieval, meaning people are at least married when they come to an age, like 16-18 or even younger. You might say that it's just a different culture but cultures are based on the surroundings. Death, illness, poor hygiene and diet, thugs, murderers, beasts, Blight... All this lead to a high probability to die young, which is why it would be important to have your child get married soon so that the family name won't die.
Meh. Me and my brother are light skinned, we’re basically white, with my sister being darker than us. Than one of my cousins family it’s the opposite. First born, he’s dark and very Native American looking. His two younger brothers are basically white like me and my Bro. So I don’t see how it’s weird.
lmaooo i have a human mage with white hair and bright purple eyes guess i'll just say she's half elf
OH FUCK. This suddenly reminded me of a point I forgot! Mages are said to be able to change eye colors, and it's apparently one of the earliest signs of magic! It wouldn't be a stretch to imagine this applies to hair as well. :D
sweet carrot bruh I think we created the same character lol
I think you made a character that resembles a book description of Targaryens with those purple eyes and white hair

This is very late but tevinter seems to be based on Rome so it makes sense they’d be more olive skinned
my black human noble in origin it was awkward
Eleanor had some explaining to do.
Yeah, a friend of mine ran into a similar situation when he made the human noble look as close to him as possible. It did make for an amusing commentary on the prologue, though!
WHAT ! ?
I just make up a crazy back story in my head and ran with it in the games.
DarkKing009 I’d like to think Elenor gave the how I met your mother explanation. “So when I pregnant with you I drank white milk, and when I was pregnant with you I drank chocolate milk!”
Elves have bigger eyes? Tell that to Solas lol
Solas is not your typical elf...
Solas just has a huge, egg shaped head
It's just a phase

I agree with you. I've always thought that my Cousland was at least eighteen (my canon is that he was nineteen at the start Origins, but whatever.)
The way I do it is:
Human Noble - 24

City Elf - 21
Dalish Elf - 19
Dwarf Commoner - 21
Dwarf Noble - 32
Officially Trian is 25 and Bhelen is 21 so Lord/Lady Aeducan is like 23 or 24

Dark eyebrows/light hair is natural and common in places like Norway
But the Dragon Age Comics actually revealed that Fenris is blonde, and looking a lot like Link from Breath of the Wild.
Once i accidentally made an elf mage on origins that looks exactly like Solas, but he has a tatoo over his eye.
Solas saw you when he woke from his slumber and used his power to borrow your appearance so he could fit in.

So what would be a good head cannon/ explanation if your elven inquisator has a somewhat dark warm olive skin color?
At least from what we have seen, geographical locations for elven skin colors match that of humans (Does that make sense? Haha- I mean that both Humans and elves from Rivain would have dark skin). As for a dark olive skin color- I would guess Antiva, similar to Zevran. Ferelden (Vaea) and Tevinter (Fenris) also have produced elves with darker skin tones. Hope that helps!

If you think about it that does make sense! Because since the clan your elf is from is in the Free Marches, and the Free Marches is kinda sandwiched by all continents you mentioned,so it would be reasonable if there was some mixed skin tones and dark skin tones within the elven clan that your inquisator is from! Thanks for the help!
This is actually interesting
Regarding skin colours:
I think the northern counteies in general tend to be darker.
Everytime I’m in character creator I come to this and make my character based on this video lmao
im currently playing a human with dark skin and silver hair. i actually found human inquisition npcs at the keep who have dark skin and white hair.
I need to do them canon correct too 😱 if I realise its not right I'll start again xS
7:13 maybe shes half dwarf and her dwarven parent was castless
I know this is very late, just wanted to say that a half dwarf would always be a dwarf (half elves always take after their non elven parent)
I think the meta answer is that DA2 was rushed, so they werent really focusing on a guy you kill as soon as you meet him.
Any idea why spirits of wisdom keeps looking strait up with their head?
I forgot to mention how much I love your mod selection choices for the hair! Could you share the name of the mod for it?
I made a Quinari Templar. Long story short, Cass was my love and Cullen was my bestie. I created a storyline from there as to why.
Wait, I had the opportunity to be an asshole!?! Meh, missed opportunity. 😂🤣🤘🏼
Consideing what Qun has to say about magic I'd say very proper.
Am I the only one that had no idea female dwarves can have beards?
What happens in the vallaslin scene in DAI if you romance Solas but don't have vallaslin on your character design...? I can't remember if it's even possible to have an elf without vallaslin though. Like, what happens????
Holy shit, that serana!
I gave my qunari red hair, even though Bull says that Qunari doesn't have red hair.
My human in Dragon Age Inquisition has a tattoo, thought it would look good on her... now idk if it's lore friendly or not ??
It is still not lore breaking. (Especially since the free marches are ... free. Do what you want.) We just don't know the meaning of human tattoos while elven and dwarven tattoos are completely covered by lore.
Rylen is a human Marcher with a face tatt. And a Templar! So, why not XD
Always though tevinters were like tanner
Don't be an asshole with this? I think I WILL be! It is an RPG after all ;)
The rules only matter in MMO RPs IMO.
David Gaider sad that the eastern part of Tevinter is populated by Middle Eastern people. E.G. Dorian
... I believe we should have braided ponytails for mages...
Am I the only one who thought that DA2 male elves looked potbellied? Except beautiful Fenris.
8:52 WTF is thaaaat, your hawke's face is being attacked... do something!
Quanari in the comics look way better than the too human shite in Inquisition. The trespasser did better for some male quanari
I made my Qunari a sheep version
Wait.. How does Hawke relate to an elf warden?
Ninat human mage, not elven
👍👍.
I'm like six six six 😂
Hair choices suck. That’s all I have to say.
